In WoW Classic: Season of Discovery, the fastest route is to buy the Pain and Suffering rune from a Rune Broker if one is available to your character. To earn it through the original discovery, collect two drops from Wastewander enemies in Tanaris, use the combined notes at a summoning scroll, and defeat the elite that appears.
Choose a Rune Broker or the original Tanaris route
Warcraft Tavern reports that in Phase 6, Rune Brokers in starting zones and major cities sell runes and skill books for 1 copper. Wowhead also describes buying runes from city vendors. Check a broker in your current game version for the rune and its price; the guides’ vendor details may change with patches. If you would rather complete the original discovery, or the vendor route is unavailable, use the Tanaris steps below. Warcraft Tavern’s guide and Wowhead’s guide cover both options.

How to get the rune through the original discovery
- Collect a Wastewander Cipher. In Tanaris, kill Wastewander Thieves until one drops.
- Collect Coded Warlock Notes. Kill Wastewander Shadow Mages for the second item.
- Combine the items. Use the Cipher and Coded Warlock Notes to create Deciphered Warlock Notes.
- Find the summoning scroll. Travel to the ground scroll in Tanaris, east of Gadgetzan, at approximately 58, 36. The guides differ slightly on the coordinate: Wowhead gives 58.0, 36.0, while Warcraft Tavern gives 58.7, 36.5. The scroll has a name tooltip but cannot be clicked.
- Summon the enemy. Stand on or directly over the scroll and use Deciphered Warlock Notes. This summons an Enraged Voidwalker, described by the guides as a level 43 elite.
- Defeat it and loot the rune item. The Voidwalker drops Prophecy of Verdant Winter, which teaches Pain and Suffering.
Ways to save time on the Tanaris route
Warcraft Tavern says the notes are not soulbound and can be bought from the in-game Auction House. You can look for the two component drops, or buy Deciphered Warlock Notes directly to skip farming them. Availability and prices depend on the Auction House; these are in-game alternatives to farming, not guaranteed stock.
What the rune does and who can use it
Pain and Suffering is a Priest rune engraved in the helm slot. Wowhead recommends level 40 or higher for its original discovery route. Its guide is marked with patch 1.15.8 context and was updated April 7, 2024, so treat that level recommendation as the guide’s stated requirement rather than a guarantee for every later version. See Wowhead’s Pain and Suffering guide for the rune listing.
