In Minecraft 1.20, find the Silence Armor Trim Smithing Template in a chest in an Ancient City. The template is consumed when you use it, so duplicate it first if you want to trim more than one armor piece.
Where to find the Silence Armor Trim
Search chests in an Ancient City for the Silence Armor Trim Smithing Template. Mojang lists Silence among the trims found in Ancient City loot in both the Java Edition 1.20 release notes and the Bedrock Edition 1.20 release notes.
Finding an Ancient City does not guarantee the template will be in a particular chest. The release notes do not provide a chest-by-chest guarantee or a numerical chance, so there is no supported drop rate to rely on.
Duplicate the template before using it
A smithing template is consumed when applied. If you want multiple Silence trims, duplicate the template before taking it to the smithing table. The 1.20 recipe uses one template, seven diamonds, and one block of the material the template is made from; it produces two templates.

Apply the Silence pattern at a smithing table
- Open a smithing table.
- Place the Silence Armor Trim Smithing Template in the template slot.
- Place a helmet, chestplate, leggings, or boots in the armor slot.
- Place a valid trim material in the material slot, then take the trimmed armor from the result slot.
The template sets the Silence pattern; the material you choose sets its color. Armor trims are cosmetic and do not add protection or another gameplay effect.

These location and crafting details are documented for Minecraft Java Edition 1.20 and Bedrock Edition 1.20. They do not establish whether loot rules are unchanged in later versions.
