Java Edition: dye wolf armor through crafting
- Get wolf armor and a dye in the color you want.
- Open a crafting interface and combine the armor with the dye, following the leather-armor dyeing method.
- Take the colored armor from the crafting result.
Mojang’s Java Edition 1.20.5 release notes confirm that wolf armor can be dyed in a similar fashion to leather armor. They do not specify a complete color-mixing chart or the exact interface clicks for every setup.
Bedrock Edition: dye it with a cauldron
- Fill a cauldron with water.
- Use a dye on the water-filled cauldron to color the water.
- Use the wolf armor on the dyed water to dye the armor to that color.
- To remove the color, use the armor on a cauldron filled with undyed water.
Minecraft’s cauldron guide describes dyed water as a way to dye wolf armor to the water’s color and undyed water as a way to wash the color out. Bedrock’s 1.20.80 release notes also confirm that wolf armor can be dyed.
Equip the dyed armor
Once dyed, the armor can be equipped on your tamed adult wolf. Java’s 1.20.5 notes state that only the wolf’s owner can equip, repair, or shear its armor. Dyeing changes the armor’s color; it is separate from crafting armor with armadillo scutes or repairing it with scutes. See Mojang’s Java 1.20.5 notes for those related mechanics.
