Reach level 10, activate Nocturnal’s Shrine north of Leyawiin, retrieve the Eye of Nocturnal from Tidewater Cave, and return it to the shrine. Nocturnal rewards you with the Skeleton Key, an unbreakable lockpick that also grants +40 Security while carried.
Start Nocturnal’s quest
- Reach character level 10. The quest is level-gated. In Oblivion Remastered, building progress with Major and Minor Skills triggers a level-up indicator; to actually gain the level, find a bed and sleep. Bethesda Support explains: “To actually increase your character’s level, you need to find a bed and sleep.” Bethesda Support’s leveling instructions cover the process.
- Travel to Nocturnal’s Shrine. It is north of Leyawiin. Activate the shrine to begin the quest, “Nocturnal.”
If the quest does not start, check your character level after sleeping. The requirement is character level 10, not simply having the level-up indicator.
Find the Eye of Nocturnal
- Go to Weebam-Na’s house in Leyawiin and ask about the Eye of Nocturnal.
- After speaking with Weebam-Na and Bejeen, move to a shadowed corner and listen to their conversation without being noticed. They reveal the Eye’s location.
- Follow the active quest marker to Tidewater Cave, south/southeast of Leyawiin. The marker is more dependable than navigating by compass direction alone.
- Proceed through the cave to a flooded passage. The Eye of Nocturnal is beside a submerged chest.
Tidewater Cave has enemies, so be prepared for a dungeon encounter. If Weebam-Na or Bejeen notice you while you are listening, stealth or invisibility can help you eavesdrop successfully. The quest sequence and location details are described in PC Gamer’s Skeleton Key guide.
Return the Eye and claim the Skeleton Key
Take the Eye back to Nocturnal’s Shrine and return it to her. Completing this step earns the Skeleton Key; there is no separate route to the artifact documented in the guides. GameSpot’s Oblivion Remastered guide also identifies the shrine quest as the acquisition path.

What the Skeleton Key does
- It does not break. You can keep using it rather than replacing ordinary lockpicks.
- It grants +40 Fortify Security while carried. GameSpot and PC Gamer report this bonus in their 2025 guides.
- It can bypass the lockpicking minigame. Repeatedly use the auto-attempt action to try to open locks without playing the minigame.
What to use before level 10
Until Nocturnal’s quest is available, use ordinary lockpicks. GameSpot lists the Thieves’ Guild and Shady Sam as sources. They are interim options; unlike the Skeleton Key, ordinary lockpicks are not unbreakable and do not provide its Security bonus.
