The most reliable way to get a Strange Bun in Stardew Valley is to reach 7 hearts with Shane, receive his recipe by mail, and cook it with 1 Wheat Flour, 1 Periwinkle, and 1 Void Mayonnaise. You can also find one through chance-based drops, shop stock, and other random sources.

Cook a Strange Bun with Shane’s recipe
- Reach 7 hearts with Shane. He sends the Strange Bun recipe by mail when you reach this friendship level.
- Gather the ingredients: 1 Wheat Flour, 1 Periwinkle, and 1 Void Mayonnaise.
- Cook it in an upgraded farmhouse kitchen or with a Cookout Kit.

Hunt Shadow Brutes
Shadow Brutes appear on Mines floors 81–119. Each has a 4% chance to drop a Strange Bun, so this is an opportunistic route rather than a guaranteed way to obtain one. The Shadow Brute page lists the drop chance.

- Krobus’ shop: Strange Buns may appear in his random Saturday stock. Krobus lives in the Sewers after you obtain the Rusty Key; his shop is open at all hours every day. See Krobus’ shop details.
- Stardrop Saloon: Check its rotating stock and the garbage can outside.
- Traveling Cart: Check its inventory when it is available.
- Mystery Box: A box may contain a Strange Bun.
- Krobus as a roommate: He may give you one as a morning gift.

What the Strange Bun is used for
Toggle monsters on your farm
Offer the bun to the Dark Shrine of Night Terrors in the Witch’s Hut to toggle monster spawning on or off on your farm. This is its main functional use if you want to change whether monsters appear there. The Witch’s Hut page describes the shrine.
Other uses
- Tailor it to make the dyeable Heart Shirt.
- Use it as red dye.
- Use it in the toy-chest secret in Vincent’s room to receive the Foroguemon statue.

Version and gift details
The official wiki’s version history records that the recipe-mail threshold became 7 hearts in version 1.4, and cooking with a Cookout Kit was added in version 1.5. In version 1.6, Krobus changed to liking the Strange Bun as a gift, while Shane became neutral toward it. Shane mailing the recipe does not mean he likes receiving the dish.
