In the original Hades, approach a character when they are available, interact with them, and select Ambrosia from the gift menu. If Ambrosia is not offered, that character is not yet ready to receive it: keep progressing their relationship through accepted Nectar gifts and conversations, then check again.
How to give Ambrosia to a character
-
Find the character in the House of Hades or another location where they appear. Character availability can vary as you return from runs and advance the story.

Why the Ambrosia option may be missing
An unavailable Ambrosia option means the relationship has not reached the required point. The prerequisite differs by character, so there is no single number of Nectar gifts or universal trigger to follow. Continue giving Nectar when accepted, exhaust available dialogue, and progress any character-specific story events or favors. Then interact with the character again when they appear.
Community-maintained Hades Wiki information on Ambrosia and character relationship guidance describes the broad progression, but does not establish exact prerequisites for every character. Avoid treating a fixed gift count as a rule for the whole cast.
Nectar and Ambrosia do different jobs
| Item | Role in character progression |
|---|---|
| Nectar | The earlier gift. A character’s first Nectar gift generally unlocks a Keepsake. |
| Ambrosia | Used for deeper character bonds and, for certain characters, Chthonic Companion unlocks. |
For a character you are trying to befriend, start with Nectar when that is the available gift; switch to Ambrosia once the option appears. The released game has both items. Supergiant’s Welcome to Hell Update patch notes explain that a resource called Ambrosia during development was renamed Nectar, which is why older references may use the names differently.

What an Ambrosia gift can unlock—and another way to use it
Some characters grant a Chthonic Companion after an Ambrosia gift, but this is not a reward from every character or every Ambrosia gift. Ambrosia can also upgrade a Companion you already have: use the display case after boss fights to access Companion upgrades. The character gift advances that character’s relationship; the display-case use improves a Companion.

Give it to a character whose Ambrosia gift option is available and whose relationship or Companion reward you want to pursue. If the option is absent, save the item and continue that character’s progression rather than trying to spend it elsewhere. Since prerequisites and rewards vary, the game’s available gift prompt is the practical signal for when a character can accept it.
