Get Vengeful Spirit from the Snail Shaman in the Ancestral Mound, in the Forgotten Crossroads. Reach the Mound after defeating the False Knight or by breaking through the wall on the left side of the False Knight’s boss room. After receiving the spell, defeat the Elder Baldur inside to open the exit gate.
Reach the Ancestral Mound
From the Forgotten Crossroads, make your way to the Ancestral Mound. The cited Hollow Knight Wiki page for the Ancestral Mound describes two ways to access it:
- Defeat the False Knight and proceed from the boss-room area.
- Break through the wall on the left side of the False Knight’s boss room.
Get Vengeful Spirit from the Snail Shaman
Inside the Mound, find the Snail Shaman and accept the spell. The acquisition sequence leaves the Knight unconscious; when the Knight wakes, a gate blocks the way out. Defeat the Elder Baldur in the area to open it.
Use the spell to get past the Elder Baldur
An Elder Baldur guards the route toward Greenpath. Use Vengeful Spirit against it; the spell page describes this as the intended way to deal with the guard. Cast it with FOCUS/CAST or QUICK CAST, without holding UP or DOWN. It fires a projectile forward and consumes SOUL. Hitting enemies replenishes SOUL, while a fully protected enemy takes no damage. Vengeful Spirit is not Shade Soul
Vengeful Spirit is the initial spell you receive from the Snail Shaman in the Ancestral Mound. Shade Soul is a separate, later upgrade found in the Soul Sanctum; the Soul Sanctum page lists the Elegant Key as a requirement for reaching it. You do not need Shade Soul to obtain Vengeful Spirit.
