Find the GTA 5 CD key in Steam
These instructions apply to the PC/Steam edition of GTA V, where Steam exposes a Rockstar activation key:
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Select Library.
- Find Grand Theft Auto V.
- Right-click the game and choose Manage.
- Select CD Keys or CD Key.
- Copy the displayed key.
The exact label can vary with Steam’s interface and the game entitlement. Rockstar’s documented path is Library → right-click the Rockstar title → Manage → CD Key.

When does the key appear?
Steam may not issue or display a third-party activation key until the game download has begun. If GTA V is not installed, start the installation first; completing the download is the safest approach. Steam notes that only some games provide additional activation keys, so this menu is not guaranteed for every edition or entitlement.
Do not confuse the Steam CD key with a Steam product key. The Steam Activate a Product on Steam screen is for a retail or digital key intended to add a game to Steam. The CD key shown inside GTA V’s Library management menu is generally intended for verification with Rockstar.
Use the key with Rockstar Games Launcher
- Launch GTA V from Steam.
- Allow Rockstar Games Launcher to install or open if prompted.
- Sign in to the Rockstar Games account you intend to keep linked to this Steam copy.
- Enter the Steam CD key when the Rockstar activation prompt requests it.
- Confirm the account and complete activation.
Check the Rockstar account carefully before confirming. Rockstar says activation codes are one-time-use and permanently applied to the account used for redemption. Do not post the complete key in a screenshot, forum, or support request.

If you are redeeming a separate code from a retailer or another legitimate source inside Rockstar Games Launcher, the launcher’s documented route is account avatar → Redeem Code → enter code → Check → Redeem. That is a different workflow from retrieving the Steam-issued key.
“CD Keys” is missing from Steam
Try these steps in order:
- Confirm that the currently signed-in Steam account purchased GTA V. A family-shared copy, non-Steam shortcut, or different platform entitlement may not provide the key.
- Start or complete the GTA V download through Steam.
- Restart the Steam client.
- In Library, right-click GTA V and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files.
- After verification finishes, restart Steam again.
- Return to Manage → CD Keys.
This can resolve an entitlement that has not refreshed or files that prevented the key from being generated. Steam offline mode, a temporary key-service problem, an edition mismatch, or an entitlement that does not expose a separate key can also explain the missing option. Rockstar’s file-verification instructions are available in its Steam activation-key guide.
On Steam Deck or in Big Picture Mode, menu placement may differ. If necessary, use Steam’s desktop mode or the Steam desktop client, while keeping the same Library management path in mind.
If Rockstar says the code is invalid
- Copy the key directly from Steam instead of typing it.
- Remove accidental leading or trailing spaces.
- Make sure you are entering it in the Rockstar activation prompt, not Steam’s product-activation screen.
- When using Rockstar’s activation webpage, preserve the dashes. In an in-game field, the dashes may be inserted automatically.
- Confirm that Steam owns the game and that the correct Rockstar account is signed in.

If the code is “already in use”
This usually means the code is already associated with a Rockstar account or that the launcher is using the wrong local account profile. It does not, by itself, prove that the key is fraudulent.
- Sign out of Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Sign back in to the Rockstar account originally linked to the Steam copy.
- Ensure Steam is running under the account that owns GTA V.
- Launch GTA V from Steam, then restart both Steam and Rockstar Games Launcher if necessary.
- If the error continues, open Rockstar Games Launcher and go to Settings → Account Information → Delete local profile.
- Sign in again and retry the launch.
Deleting the local profile removes stored profile details from that computer; Rockstar says it does not delete the Rockstar account or saved games. Rockstar also lists file verification, permissions checks, and, where appropriate, administrator-mode troubleshooting for this error. Running Steam or GTAV.exe as administrator is not a universal requirement, so use it only as a troubleshooting step. See Rockstar’s guide for the “activation code already in use” error.

Activation succeeds, but GTA V will not launch
Activation and launching are separate problems. Confirm that Rockstar Games Launcher is installed and updated, sign in with the Rockstar account linked to the Steam purchase, and launch GTA V from Steam rather than an unrelated Rockstar shortcut. Then restart both clients and verify the Steam files. If the problem appears to involve permissions or the local launcher profile, follow Rockstar’s specific troubleshooting steps before trying administrator mode.

A GTA V purchase made through Rockstar Games Launcher is not a Steam purchase and does not create a Steam entitlement or Steam CD key. Rockstar says its PC purchases are automatically applied to the Rockstar account used at checkout and should appear in Rockstar Games Launcher under Games.

A Rockstar Store or Launcher copy cannot simply be converted into a Steam copy. Rockstar does not provide key transfers or exchanges. You can add the launcher as a non-Steam game, but that does not create Steam ownership, Steam achievements, Steam playtime tracking, or a Steam-issued key.

If you bought GTA V from another retailer
Check the retailer’s order page, delivery email, or code-delivery page. If the code was never delivered, contact the retailer first; contact Rockstar support if the retailer cannot resolve it. Do not expect a Rockstar Store purchase to produce a Steam key, and do not buy a second code merely because an account-linking problem has not been resolved.
What to send support
Before opening a Steam or Rockstar support request, collect:
- Your Steam purchase receipt showing the date and amount.
- A screenshot of the full Steam window showing the relevant account and GTA V in Library.
- A screenshot of the Steam CD Key window, with the full key hidden from public view.
- The activation serial key typed into the private support ticket when requested.
- The exact error message and when it appears.
- Your Rockstar nickname and account email address.
- The purchase date, platform, edition, and retailer.
Rockstar’s activation-code support guidance lists similar evidence for Steam cases. Keep the full key private and share it only through an official support channel.
