Joystick and HOTAS support in MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is a PC feature. The game lists several devices as configurable out of the box; most other models can be enabled by adding a mapping to the HOTAS Mappings file and then binding the inputs to game actions. The official FAQ says Xbox and PlayStation do not support HOTAS.
Check your platform and device
The official MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries FAQ and Peripheral Resources list these devices as configurable out of the box for PC:
- ThrustMaster T.16000M Joystick
- ThrustMaster TWCS Throttle
- ThrustMaster T.Flight Hotas X
- ThrustMaster HOTAS Warthog
- Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick
- Saitek X52 and X52 Pro
- Saitek Pro Flight Rudder Pedals
- Saitek Pro Flight X-56 Rhino Stick and X-56 Rhino Throttle
“Configurable out of the box” means the model is listed for the PC game; it does not guarantee that every control is already assigned to your preferred action. If your device is not on the list, the FAQ says most other models can be enabled through the HOTAS Mappings file. The Thrustmaster T.16000M is one listed option, not a required purchase.
Enable an unlisted joystick or HOTAS
Piranha Games’ HOTAS Remapping Documentation explains how to identify a device and add a mapping. It describes the purpose directly: “This documentation will go over how to remap your HOTAS devices to work with Mechwarrior5.”

- Find the device identifiers. Use the manual’s instructions to find the joystick or throttle’s Product ID and Vendor ID. These identify the hardware in the mapping file.
- Add a device mapping. Follow the manual’s format to associate the physical buttons and axes with the game’s virtual joystick and throttle controls. Use its examples as a guide for the structure, adapting the identifiers and inputs to your own hardware.
- Assign controls to game actions. After completing the file setup, open the game’s Game Settings screen and map the resulting inputs to actions such as movement or weapon controls. The peripheral resource page treats this as a separate step from adding the device mapping.
- Test the controls in-game. Check each axis and button, then adjust the action bindings if an input is missing or assigned incorrectly.
Understand the two layers of mapping
Getting an unlisted device recognized and assigning its controls to gameplay actions are distinct tasks. The mapping file tells the game how to interpret hardware inputs; the Game Settings screen connects those inputs to actions. Completing only the file mapping may leave you with recognized controls that are not yet bound as you want.
A community example, MW5 VKB HOSAS Mapper, also follows this two-stage idea: map physical VKB devices to virtual Joystick and Throttle inputs with HOTASMappings.Remap, then bind those inputs in the game. Its directions are specific to that community tool and supported VKB setup, not universal instructions for every joystick or HOTAS.

If the device still does not work
- Confirm that you are using the PC version; the official FAQ says Xbox and PlayStation do not support HOTAS.
- Recheck the Product ID, Vendor ID, and mapping syntax against the official manual’s examples.
- Verify that the controls are assigned to game actions in Game Settings, rather than assuming the file mapping completes the setup.
- If the issue remains, use the technical support contact provided in the official FAQ. A community mapping utility may help with a supported configuration, but it is not a guaranteed fix for other devices.
