To give a player operator status, enter /op PlayerName in chat or in the server console, replacing PlayerName with the player’s name. You must have enough authority to run the command; if you do not, ask the server or world owner. Operator status grants significant administrative privileges, so only give it to someone you trust.

What OP means

OP means operator: an elevated permission level that lets a player use commands or access host-level abilities. It is an administrative role, not a cosmetic setting. Minecraft’s command guide says players on someone else’s server should ask its owner for help if they need assistance with commands: Minecraft: How to Use Commands in Minecraft.

Minecraft Education warns that a player granted Operator status receives the host’s privileges and abilities. Consider what access the player needs before granting it.

Give a player OP

  1. Check that you have authority. You need sufficient permissions to grant operator status. On Bedrock, Microsoft lists the required permission level for /op as Admin.
  2. Open chat or the server console. In chat, Minecraft commands begin with a slash. A server console can also accept commands, though the exact input convention may vary by host.
  3. Enter the command with the player’s name. Use /op PlayerName, replacing PlayerName with the intended player’s name. Microsoft’s Bedrock reference gives the syntax as /op <player: target>; it accepts a player name or target selector.
  4. Check the result. If the command reports that you lack permission, you cannot grant OP from that account or interface. Ask the server administrator or world owner.

Microsoft’s Bedrock reference says this command does not require cheats, but it still requires Admin permission: Bedrock /op command reference. Cheats and administrative permission are separate requirements.

How the command differs by setup

Bedrock Edition

Use /op <player: target>. The caller must have Admin permission; cheats are not required for this command, according to Microsoft’s reference.

Minecraft Education

The host starts as an Operator, while players who join later do not receive that role by default. The host can grant it with /op. Because Operator status includes host privileges, grant it cautiously. See Minecraft Education: Profile Types and Permissions.

Java, Realms, consoles, and hosting panels

The general Minecraft command guide supports /op <playername> and entering commands in a server console, but it does not provide one universal click-by-click workflow for every Realm, platform, or third-party hosting panel. Use the controls for your specific setup or ask its administrator. In a console, whether you need to omit the slash depends on the implementation.

If /op does not work

  • Permission error: The account running the command lacks the required authority. Ask the owner or administrator to grant OP.
  • Target not recognized: Check the player’s name and enter it in place of the placeholder. Bedrock also supports a target selector.
  • Command entered in the wrong place: In chat, include the leading slash. Console input conventions can differ by server or host.
  • You are unsure whether to grant it: OP provides elevated command or host privileges. Do not assign it merely to make a player a regular participant.

Remove a player’s OP status

An account with sufficient authority can revoke operator status with /deop PlayerName. Minecraft Education documents /deop (name), and Microsoft’s Bedrock command list also includes /deop for removing OP. Replace the name with the player whose permissions you want to revoke.
