Use the /effect command, with different syntax for each edition. In Bedrock Edition, enter /effect @s speed 60 0. In Java Edition, enter /effect give @s minecraft:speed 60 0. Both apply Speed I to you for 60 seconds, provided you have permission to use commands.
Use the command for your edition
| Edition | Command | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Bedrock Edition | /effect @s speed 60 0 |
Speed I for 60 seconds |
| Java Edition | /effect give @s minecraft:speed 60 0 |
Speed I for 60 seconds |
The key difference is that Java uses the give subcommand; Bedrock does not. Microsoft’s Bedrock examples show the self-targeted form, while Mojang documents the Java command syntax. See Microsoft’s effect command examples and Mojang’s Java command syntax notes.

Enter the command
- Check whether your world is running Java Edition or Bedrock Edition.
- Make sure cheats or commands are enabled and that you have permission to use them.
- Open the chat or command input for your platform.
- Enter the command from the table that matches your edition, then submit it. The effect targets you because
@smeans the command’s executor.
To change the duration, replace 60 with the number of seconds you want. The final 0 sets the amplifier to 0, which produces Speed I. Higher amplifier values increase the effect level; Microsoft’s Bedrock example uses 2 for Speed II.
Enable commands if the effect command is unavailable
In a Bedrock single-player world, enable Allow Cheats. For a Java single-player world, enable Allow Commands when creating the world. On someone else’s multiplayer world or server, you may need the owner or operator to grant access. Minecraft’s guide to using commands explains these permission settings; Microsoft also notes that Bedrock’s /effect command requires cheats in its command reference.

- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs

Remove the effect or adjust its display
To clear effects, use the syntax for your edition:
- Bedrock:
/effect @s clear - Java:
/effect clear @s
Bedrock’s command also accepts an optional hideParticles Boolean after the amplifier; it defaults to false, so particles are visible unless you change it. The documented Bedrock syntax and options are in Microsoft’s effect command reference. Java supports infinite as an effect duration starting with version 1.19.4, according to the Java Edition 1.19.4 release notes; use the in-game command suggestions if your version does not accept a form you entered.

If the command fails
- Confirm you used the syntax for the edition you are playing; the Java
giveform is not the Bedrock form. - Check that commands or cheats are enabled and that you have permission in the current world.
- If the command syntax differs in your installed version, use the suggestions shown in the game’s command input.
