How to Switch to Creative Mode in Minecraft

Enter /gamemode creative when commands are enabled and you have permission. Java uses Allow Commands; Bedrock singleplayer uses Allow Cheats, which permanently disables achievements in that world.

When you have command access, enter /gamemode creative in chat. The setting that grants command access depends on your edition: Java Edition uses Allow Commands in World Options, while Bedrock singleplayer uses Allow Cheats in the world’s Game settings. In multiplayer, the host or server administrator controls whether you can use commands.

Switch to Creative in Java Edition

  1. Open the world and open chat.
  2. Type /gamemode creative, including the slash, and submit it. Minecraft’s command guide explains that commands entered in chat begin with a slash.
  3. If the command is unavailable in singleplayer, open World Options and enable Allow Commands. Commands can be enabled when creating a world or later in its options. The Java Edition 26.3 release notes also list Allow Commands and Personal Game Mode in World Options.

Java Edition 26.3 release notes also identify F3 + F4 as a game-mode control equivalent to /gamemode. Shortcuts and menu labels can vary by release or control configuration, so use the command if the shortcut is unavailable. See the Java Edition 26.3 release notes.

Switch to Creative in Bedrock Edition

  1. In singleplayer, open the world’s settings and select the Game tab.
  2. Turn on Allow Cheats if it is off.
  3. Return to the world, open chat, and enter /gamemode creative. Microsoft’s Bedrock command documentation also lists /gamemode c and /gamemode 1 as aliases; the full name is easiest to recognize.

In Bedrock, enabling cheats permanently prevents achievements from being unlocked in that world, even if you turn cheats off later. Minecraft describes this consequence in its official command guide.

What to check if the command fails

  • Java singleplayer: Open World Options and check Allow Commands.
  • Bedrock singleplayer: Open the world’s settings, go to Game, and check Allow Cheats.
  • Someone else’s world or a server: Commands require a sufficiently high permission level. Ask the host or administrator to grant access. In Java LAN play, the host can configure command access in World Options.
  • Command syntax: Include the leading slash: /gamemode creative. If using Bedrock, /gamemode c and /gamemode 1 are also documented forms.

What Creative mode changes

Creative is one of Minecraft’s game modes. For an overview of how it differs from Survival, see Minecraft Help’s game-mode guide.
