How to Hack Browser Games—Safely and Legally

Browser games may store state locally, on a server, or in both places. Learn what client-side changes can mean—and how to investigate games safely with permission.

“Hacking” a browser game can mean examining how it works, but changing a game you do not own or have permission to test can compromise fair play and harm other players. This guide focuses on safe, authorized investigation: browser-side changes may affect a local display or save, but they do not automatically change what an online game’s server accepts.

What “hacking a browser game” can mean

Browser-game code runs within a web application. Games may use JavaScript, HTML and CSS, graphics interfaces such as WebGL, input APIs, browser storage, and network connections. Some are mostly local; others communicate with game servers and backend services. There is no single architecture or universal method for inspecting them. MDN’s overview of web game technologies describes these common building blocks.

Here, “hacking” means learning about or assessing a game you created, a local demo, or a game whose owner has explicitly authorized your testing. It does not mean cheating in a live third-party game, bypassing anti-cheat protections, or interfering with other players. OWASP’s Game Security Framework is written for developers and security testers, not as a guide to cheating. OWASP Game Security Framework.

Why a browser-side change may not change an online game

A game’s state can live in the browser, on a server, or in both places. In an offline game, the browser may handle much of the logic and keep progress locally. A connected game can send actions to backend services and rely on the server to decide which results count. Editing something visible in your browser does not establish that a remote service accepts it as true.

OWASP’s Game Security Framework v0.5.1 calls an authoritative server the central architectural principle for securing multiplayer games. It recommends that the server validate security-critical actions and control gameplay attributes such as position, health, and inventory. The framework also advises limiting client data to what is needed to render the scene, which can reduce exposure to wallhacks and map hacks. These practices make client manipulation less likely to determine multiplayer outcomes, but they do not make cheating impossible.

There is a performance trade-off: validating every action synchronously can add latency and consume network capacity. A game may use client prediction for responsiveness while validating actions on the server, with stronger checks for security-critical events. The specific design varies by game.

Local games and connected games: what to examine

Architecture Useful questions in an authorized assessment What a local edit establishes
Primarily local or offline Which logic and progress stay in the browser? What data is saved locally? Is progress later synchronized to a service? It may show how the local game behaves or stores data. It does not establish how a separate service would treat that data.
Connected or competitive Which state is server-authoritative? Which actions receive server validation? What information does the server send to the client? It may change the local display or client behavior, but does not prove that the server accepted a changed result.

These are assessment questions, not assumptions about every game. MDN notes that games can use browser storage such as IndexedDB or cloud storage; OWASP’s framework describes client, server, backend, and third-party components as parts of a game system.

What browser storage can—and cannot—tell you

Browser storage can hold local game data, but it is not a trusted source of remote game state. JavaScript running on a page can access localStorage, and someone or some process with access to the browser profile may read or modify client-side storage. IndexedDB does not provide confidentiality from a person who can access that profile. OWASP’s HTML5 Security Cheat Sheet also advises against storing session identifiers in localStorage because JavaScript can access them.

For a game developer, the practical lesson is to treat client-submitted values and browser-stored data as untrusted. Do not use them as proof that a player earned a reward or achieved a result; validate consequential actions on the trusted server.

A safe way to investigate a browser game

  1. Choose an authorized target. Use a game you created, a local demo, or a target whose owner has explicitly permitted the assessment. Stay within the agreed scope.
  2. Describe the behavior you are studying. Determine whether it is only rendered locally, saved in browser storage, or sent to a backend. Do not alter other players’ experience or make requests you are not authorized to make.
  3. Map the trust boundary. For each important value or action, ask which component supplies it and which component verifies it. Compare the design with OWASP’s guidance on server authority and validation.
  4. Report findings responsibly. Use the owner’s authorized reporting process. Avoid publishing operational steps that would enable abuse of a live service.

OWASP identifies security testers and assessors among the intended users of its Game Security Framework, which provides security verification guidance for games.

Security checks for browser-game developers

  • Keep consequential multiplayer state and validation on the server; do not rely on a client-controlled value for critical outcomes.
  • Send clients only the information they need to render the game, where the design allows it.
  • Treat data crossing from a less-trusted component as untrusted and validate it at the more-trusted boundary.
  • When using postMessage, specify the expected target origin and check the sender’s origin when receiving a message, as described in OWASP’s HTML5 Security Cheat Sheet.
  • Render text safely and use appropriate cookie protections. OWASP ASVS 5.0 covers safe text rendering and secure cookie attributes, including HttpOnly when client-side scripts should not access a cookie value. See the OWASP Application Security Verification Standard.
