Fortnite’s See Confrontational Emotes setting lets you hide four named emotes from your view. When a covered emote is hidden, its user appears to stand still and you hear no emote sound. It does not prevent that player from performing the emote.
What the setting hides
Epic Games introduced See Confrontational Emotes with Fortnite’s v29.30 update on April 23, 2024. Its launch list covered four emotes: Laugh It Up, Take the L, Whipcrack, and Make It Plantain. Epic described them as emotes that are “sometimes used in confrontational ways”; “toxic emotes” is informal community wording, not the setting’s official name. Epic’s announcement does not identify every taunting emote as covered.
When you choose not to see a covered emote, the player using it appears to stand still and the emote sound is absent. The effect is on your view: Epic says the setting does not change another player’s ability to use the emote.
Who you can see using the covered emotes
Epic’s April 2024 launch announcement described three visibility choices:
#1 Best Overall
- Works with Nintendo Switch 2. C button not available
- Bonus Fortnite virtual item included (Googly Glider)
- Wireless controller with Bluetooth 5.0 technology
- Rechargeable lithium-ion battery: Up to 30 hours per charge*
- Two mappable Advanced Gaming Buttons
| Choice | Who can appear performing the four covered emotes |
|---|---|
| Party friends only | Friends who are in your party. This was the stated launch default; the evidence does not establish whether it remains the current default. |
| Any player | Players can appear performing the covered emotes, including players outside your party. |
| Do not show | Covered emotes are hidden from your view, regardless of who performs them. |
These choices control visibility, not availability. Choosing not to see the emotes does not remove them from Fortnite or stop other players from using them.

At launch, Epic placed See Confrontational Emotes under Social Privacy. Epic’s April 22, 2024 announcement documents that location and the choices above, but does not establish whether a later game update changed the menu path, default, or covered-emote list. Check the current Fortnite settings menu for the live location; the exact path may vary by version or platform.
