To hide inappropriate content on Steam, use Store Preferences on your own account. To restrict what a child can play or which Steam features they can use, configure Steam Families parental controls. The first option reduces discovery; the second controls access. Neither is a universal filter for every search result, chat message, community post, Workshop item, or in-game scene.
Steam has two different ways to hide unwanted content
For your own Steam account, use Store Preferences to reduce mature-content categories, exclude unwanted tags, and hide individual products from normal Store discovery. For a child’s account, use Steam Families parental controls to control game access and selected Steam features.

These settings are not the same as a universal content blocker. Store Preferences mainly affect what Steam recommends or displays while browsing. A game hidden by those preferences may still appear if someone deliberately searches for it. Steam Families provides stronger account-level restrictions, but you should not assume that Steam settings alone block every mature image, community post, chat message, Workshop item, or other user-generated item.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Hide mature content from the Steam Store
- Sign in to Steam.
- Open your account menu and choose Store Preferences or Account Preferences. Steam’s wording and page layout can change between interface updates.
- At the top of the preferences page, find the mature-content settings.
- Turn off the categories you do not want Steam to display.
- Review the rest of the page for additional discovery controls, including excluded tags and ignored products.
- Save or confirm the changes if Steam presents a save button or confirmation control.
Steam’s mature-content system uses categories selected by game developers and checked by Steam’s review team. The practical benefit is that you can choose which types of mature content you are comfortable seeing instead of relying only on an age-warning screen.

Hide a particular type of game
If the concern is a theme, genre, or other content signal rather than mature content in general, look for the excluded tags section in Store Preferences. Add relevant user tags there when they are available.
Tags can reduce recommendations and other discovery exposure, but they are not perfect safety classifications. They are user-applied signals and should not be treated as a complete or authoritative description of every game’s content.
Hide one specific game
To stop a particular title from appearing during ordinary Store browsing, use the ignored products option in Store Preferences when available. This is useful for removing a game from recommendations or other discovery surfaces without changing access to every other title.
Ignoring a product is a discovery control, not an uninstall command and not a version of the game with its content removed. It does not necessarily prevent someone from finding the title through a deliberate search.

Can someone still find a filtered game by searching for it?
Yes. Steam has explained that mature-content filtering can remove a game from discovery surfaces while still allowing it to be found through direct search. If a search identifies a game hidden by the account’s mature-content settings, Steam may show a notice that the result is filtered and display an appropriate warning or interstitial.
That means Store Preferences are best suited to controlling routine browsing, recommendations, and accidental exposure. They are not an unbreakable block against a person who knows the title and intentionally looks for it.
Use Steam Families to restrict a child’s account
For a child, use Steam’s current family-control system: Steam Families. Older guides may call this feature Family View, but Valve’s current support terminology says Family View has been replaced by Steam Families parental controls.

- An adult opens Account Settings.
- Open Family Management.
- Select Manage, then expand the child’s account entry.
- Enable Parental controls.
- Choose which games the child may access.
- Choose which Steam features the account may use.
- Set playtime limits if required.
Steam Families parental controls can cover game-access permissions, restrictions on parts of the Steam Store, community and chat features, playtime limits, playtime reports, and requests for additional playtime or feature access. The exact controls shown can depend on the account and the current Steam interface.

Which Steam setting should you use?
| Goal | Best option | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Reduce mature games shown on your own Store page | Store Preferences | Controls selected mature-content categories in discovery and browsing. |
| Avoid a theme or category | Excluded tags | Reduces discovery based on selected tags; tags are not perfect classifications. |
| Remove one title from recommendations | Ignored products | Hides the selected product from ordinary Store discovery where Steam applies the setting. |
| Limit what a child can play | Steam Families parental controls | Restricts game access for the child’s Steam account. |
| Limit chat, community, Store, or playtime access | Steam Families parental controls | Provides selected feature restrictions, time limits, reports, and approval requests. |
Important limitations
- “Mature content” does not mean every game rated Mature. Do not assume that disabling one category hides every game containing violence, nudity, sexual themes, or other material you consider inappropriate.
- Store filtering is not an in-game filter. It does not remove scenes, images, dialogue, or mechanics from a game that is installed or otherwise accessible.
- Filtering is not necessarily a complete search block. A deliberately searched title may still be identified, with a warning or filtered-result notice.
- Community and user-generated material may be separate. Steam’s Store Preferences should not be treated as a guarantee that every community post, chat message, Workshop item, or user-created image is hidden.
- Tags are imperfect. Excluding a tag can help with discovery, but a missing or inconsistent tag does not prove that a game is suitable.
- Interface labels can change. If a guide says “Family View,” look for Steam Families, Family Management, or Parental controls instead.
For stronger protection on a child’s device
Start with Steam Families rather than relying only on the Store’s mature-content switches. Restrict the games and features the child can access, use playtime limits where appropriate, and review playtime reports or approval requests. Then combine those settings with device-level supervision and clear, age-appropriate household rules.
This layered approach matters because Steam’s Store filter is designed primarily for discovery preferences. It is not presented as a universal child-safety system covering every place where content can appear on Steam.
Quick troubleshooting
I cannot find “Store Preferences.”
Open the account menu while signed in and look for Store Preferences or Account Preferences. Steam changes labels and layouts, so use the page containing mature-content, tag-exclusion, and ignored-product settings rather than relying on an older screenshot.

A game I filtered still appears in search
This is expected behavior for Steam’s discovery filtering. Store Preferences can reduce recommendations and browsing exposure, but a direct search may still identify the title and show a warning.

I found instructions for Family View
Those instructions are using legacy terminology. For current accounts, open Account Settings > Family Management, select Manage for the child’s account, and enable Parental controls.
I want to block a game completely
Ignoring the product only addresses ordinary Store discovery. For a child’s account, configure Steam Families game permissions instead. Also check whether the title is already installed or accessible through another account or device; Store Preferences do not remove access by themselves.

Can Steam’s mature-content filter completely block a game?
No. Store Preferences mainly control Store discovery, recommendations, and browsing. A person may still find a filtered game through a direct search, usually with a warning or filtered-result notice.
How do I restrict inappropriate games for a child on Steam?
Use Steam Families. Open Account Settings, go to Family Management, select Manage for the child’s account, enable Parental controls, and configure permitted games, Steam features, and playtime limits.

What happened to Steam Family View?
Family View is older terminology. Steam’s current family-control system is Steam Families, with parental controls managed through Account Settings and Family Management.
Do ignored games or excluded tags block a game on Steam?
No. Excluded tags and ignored products reduce Store discovery exposure. They do not remove content from an installed game or guarantee that the title cannot be found through search.
The Bottom Line
Use Store Preferences to hide mature-content categories, excluded tags, and specific products from normal Steam discovery. For a child, use Steam Families parental controls to restrict games, Steam features, and playtime. Neither approach should be treated as a guaranteed block on every search result or every piece of user-generated content.
