| Agreement | eula=true in eula.txt before the second start |
CurseForge reported 859,068 downloads in 2026, but popularity does not establish a guaranteed minimum specification. The pack’s world-generation load, view distance, number of players, and the particular build determine how much CPU, memory, and storage your instance actually needs.
What the current Dragonfyre release contains
Cisco’s Fantasy Medieval RPG: Dragonfyre is a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1. Its project description presents it as a lore-heavy multiplayer adventure set 1,000 years after the events of Ultimate, with custom equipment and an emphasis on cooperative play. Owner franciscogolden describes it this way: “Set 1000 years after the events of Ultimate, Dragonfyre continues the saga with the same deep lore, custom equipment and focus on multiplayer adventure.”
#1 Best Overall
The current official listing identifies the 3C Beta client and its matching server pack as the newest release at the time of writing. Download the server artifact named CARPG Dragonfyre V3C Beta Serv.zip. Do not use the similarly named CARPG_Dragonfyre_V2F_Beta_Serv.zip unless every client is intentionally running that older 2F Beta build. A server and clients on different pack revisions can fail during the handshake, omit content, or produce a world that behaves differently for different players.
Choose a hosting method
Self-host from a computer
Running the server on a desktop or home server avoids a monthly hosting bill and gives you complete control over files, Java arguments, backups, and updates. You are also responsible for port forwarding, firewall rules, uptime, public-IP changes, power failures, and diagnosing Forge or mod errors. The host computer must remain powered on whenever friends want to play.
Use managed Minecraft hosting
A managed host can provide a panel, one-click modpack installation, scheduled backups, DDoS filtering, and support. You still need to verify the exact Dragonfyre build: the provider must offer the 3C Beta server pack or permit you to upload CARPG Dragonfyre V3C Beta Serv.zip. Compare more than the advertised RAM:
- CPU generation and dedicated versus shared cores;
- the amount and frequency of RAM;
- SSD or NVMe storage and world-backup retention;
- automatic backups and how quickly they can be restored;
- DDoS protection and the data-center location relative to players;
- how modpack updates, custom server files, and configuration edits work;
- cancellation rules, renewal pricing, and data-export options.
The official CurseForge page currently points readers toward BisectHosting and displays a first-month discount code. Treat that as a commercial lead rather than proof of suitability: affiliate participation and code validity can change, so confirm the offer and the available Dragonfyre build before paying. Other providers publish Dragonfyre-specific pages as well, but their prices, RAM figures, and availability are volatile.
Run the community Docker example
The community repository wishmstr/minecraft_medieval_dragonfyre documents a Docker Compose deployment. Its instructions place CARPG_Dragonfyre_V2F_Beta_Serv.zip in a /modpacks directory and run Minecraft 1.20.1 with Dragonfyre 2F Beta. The example reserves 16 GB of RAM because the pack is heavy. It is an older, community-maintained deployment reference, not evidence that the current 3C Beta requires exactly 16 GB. If you adapt it, replace the pack only when the Compose configuration, loader, and client downloads all target the same release.
Prepare a manual server
1. Create a dedicated directory
Make a folder used only for this instance, such as DragonfyreServer. Keeping the server separate from your client installation makes backups and version changes safer. Use a local SSD with enough free space for the server files, Forge libraries, generated chunks, logs, and several compressed world backups.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

2. Download the server pack
- Open the official Dragonfyre project page and select the latest 3C Beta server download.
- Save
CARPG Dragonfyre V3C Beta Serv.zipinto a temporary download location. - Extract the archive into the dedicated server directory. Preserve its folder structure; do not merge individual mods into an unrelated Forge installation.
- Keep a copy of the original archive so you can rebuild the instance if an update or configuration experiment goes wrong.
Installing only the client package is insufficient. The server archive normally supplies the server-side mods, configuration, scripts, and loader files expected by the pack.
3. Install and verify Java 17
Install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime on the machine that will run the server. Open a terminal or Command Prompt in any directory and run:
java -version
The output should identify a 17.x runtime. If the command is not found, install Java 17 and add its bin directory to the system PATH, then open a new terminal and repeat the check. If the output shows another major version, use the full path to the Java 17 executable in your start script rather than relying on the default system Java.
4. Install Forge only when the pack needs it
Inspect the extracted files first. If the server archive already contains a Forge server installation or a supplied launch script, use those files. If it contains no installed loader, download the Forge installer for Minecraft 1.20.1, choose the server-install option, and point it at the Dragonfyre server directory. Do not mix a Forge build from another Minecraft version or an independently assembled mod list with the supplied pack.

- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.

5. Start once to generate files
Run the included launch script if one is provided. Otherwise, start the Forge server using the generated Forge launcher and the Java 17 executable. The first launch can take several minutes while Forge and the mods create libraries, configuration files, registries, and world data. Leave the process running unless it has clearly crashed; repeatedly killing it during initialization can leave incomplete files and make the next diagnosis harder.
6. Accept the EULA
The first start normally creates eula.txt and stops. Open that file, read Minecraft’s license, and change:
eula=false
to:
eula=true
Save the file and start the server again. A server that still reports an EULA error is usually being launched from a different directory than the one you edited, or the file was saved with the change reverted.
7. Set a controlled memory limit
Use the Java memory flags in the supplied launch script, or create a script that calls Java 17 with an initial and maximum heap. For example:
java -Xms4G -Xmx8G -jar forge-server-launcher.jar nogui
The exact launcher filename may differ in the pack, so use the file supplied by the server archive rather than copying this name literally. The important value is -Xmx, the maximum heap. Current hosting guidance commonly starts a small group around 8 GB, while the older Docker sample allocates 16 GB. Neither number is a universal requirement.

- When you're down to one card, don't forget to yell "UNO"!
| Situation | Practical starting point | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Small private group and a fresh world | 8 GB maximum heap is a reasonable starting point | Server tick time, garbage-collection pauses, and memory use while exploring |
| Larger group, extensive exploration, or heavy simultaneous chunk generation | More than 8 GB may be needed if the machine has spare RAM | CPU saturation and storage speed; adding RAM cannot fix a CPU bottleneck |
| Older Docker 2F Beta example | 16 GB in that example | It describes an older deployment and should not be treated as a 3C specification |
Leave memory for the operating system and other services. Assigning nearly all physical RAM to Java can cause swapping, which is slower than running with a smaller, stable heap.
Make the server reachable from the internet
Allow the process through the host firewall
Create an inbound firewall rule for the server’s TCP port, normally 25565. Windows Defender Firewall, a Linux firewall such as ufw, and security software can each block the listener independently. Allow Java or the specific server process only as broadly as necessary.
Forward the port on the router
- Give the server computer a reserved local address through the router’s DHCP reservation feature, so the forwarding target does not change.
- Create a port-forward rule for external TCP 25565 to the server’s local address and the same internal port.
- Restart the server and check that it is listening before testing from outside your home network.
- Share your public address and port with friends. If the port is not 25565, include it in the form
address:port.
Some internet providers use carrier-grade NAT, which prevents inbound forwarding even when the router appears correctly configured. In that case, ask the provider for a public IPv4 address, use a hosting service, or choose a private networking solution that all players can support. Do not publish your router administration credentials or expose unrelated ports.
Match every client to the server
Each player should install the same Dragonfyre client release that supplied the server pack. Verify all three layers:
- Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1;
- the same Forge loader version used by the server;
- the same Dragonfyre release, currently 3C Beta for a new setup.
Players should not add, remove, or update individual mods unless the server administrator is deliberately maintaining a custom fork. A mismatch can appear as a missing-mod error, a rejected connection, invisible content, recipe differences, or a crash while loading the world. Have everyone close the game completely after changing profiles so the launcher does not leave an old Java process running.
Best Value
Operate the world safely
Back up before changes
Stop the server cleanly before copying the world directory. At minimum, back up the world, server configuration, and any whitelist or operator files. Keep multiple dated copies on storage that is not the same disk as the live instance. A backup made immediately before a modpack update is especially valuable because a downgrade may not repair a world after new content has been generated.
Update as a coordinated event
- Announce a maintenance window and stop player logins.
- Make a complete backup of the world and server directory.
- Record the current Dragonfyre, Forge, and Java versions.
- Install the new server pack in a separate test directory when possible.
- Update every client to the exact same release before reopening the server.
- Join with an administrator account, check the console for errors, and inspect a recently generated area.
Do not overwrite a working 3C installation with the 2F Docker artifact or mix files from both builds. If the updated server fails, restore the previous directory and its matching backup rather than deleting random mods until it starts.

Run without a graphical interface on a dedicated machine by using the supplied nogui option. Save console output and crash reports when asking for help. The first few minutes after a clean start can contain long library or data-generation messages that are normal; a repeated stack trace, a missing dependency, or an immediate process exit is more significant than a long startup pause.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| “You need to agree to the EULA” | eula.txt still says false, or the wrong directory was edited |
Stop the process, edit the EULA in the directory used by the launch script, save eula=true, and start again. |
| Java is not recognized | Java 17 is absent or not on PATH | Install 64-bit Java 17, open a new terminal, run java -version, or call the Java 17 executable by its full path. |
| Server exits during first launch | Incomplete initialization, wrong loader, insufficient memory, or a damaged extraction | Read the earliest error in the log, allow the first generation to finish, verify Forge 1.20.1 and Java 17, and re-extract the original server archive if files are missing. |
| Friends cannot connect, but the host can join locally | Firewall or router forwarding is missing, or the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT | Check the TCP rule, reserved local address, public address, and external test; contact the ISP or move to managed hosting if inbound connections are unavailable. |
| “Missing mods” or handshake failure | Client and server use different Dragonfyre, Forge, or Minecraft versions | Compare the profile and server files exactly. Reinstall the current 3C Beta client rather than copying individual mods. |
| Severe lag while exploring new terrain | Chunk generation is stressing CPU, storage, or memory | Reduce the server’s view or simulation distance cautiously, avoid several players sprinting into unexplored areas at once, and monitor CPU, heap, and disk activity before adding RAM. |
| World will not load after an update | Changed content or configuration was applied without a compatible backup | Stop the server and restore the pre-update world and matching server files. Test the new release on a copy before trying again. |
When managed hosting is the better choice
Choose self-hosting when one person is comfortable maintaining Java and Forge, the group can tolerate home-server downtime, and the network allows port forwarding. Choose managed hosting when you need a panel, scheduled backups, support, a stable data-center connection, or a server that remains online while the host computer is off.
Before ordering, ask the provider to confirm the exact server-pack filename and Dragonfyre build, whether custom ZIP uploads are allowed, how much usable RAM is available to Java, and whether backups can be downloaded independently of the subscription. A low advertised price is not useful if the provider supplies only a client profile, an older 2F package, or no restore path.
Quick Recap
Final setup checklist
- Server pack is
CARPG Dragonfyre V3C Beta Serv.zip, not an accidental 2F archive. - Minecraft and Forge are both 1.20.1.
- Java reports version 17.
- The first start completed its file generation.
eula=trueis saved in the active server directory.- Heap size is appropriate for the group and leaves RAM for the operating system.
- TCP 25565 is allowed by the host firewall and forwarded by the router.
- Every client uses the identical Dragonfyre and Forge versions.
- A clean backup exists before players begin and before every update.
