Before moving an existing world or sharing its connection details, make a separate backup. The dedicated server is software, not a hosted service: you are responsible for keeping the machine awake, updating the package, protecting the world files and checking that everyone is running a compatible game version.

What you need before you begin
- A machine that can stay online. This can be a spare desktop, a home server or another computer you control. No authoritative 2026 CPU, memory, bandwidth or uptime requirement is established, so do not treat an arbitrary hardware specification as a guaranteed capacity figure.
- The dedicated-server package. The official Steam route places it in the Library’s Tools section. SteamCMD is a documented alternative.
- A world backup. Back up before migration, configuration changes or any public sharing of the Game ID.
- A connection choice. Relay mode is the normal starting point. Direct IP mode is optional and has additional networking work.
- Version awareness. The argument reference used for several settings identifies package version 1.2.1.5. Confirm the arguments in the instructions shipped with the package you actually download.
Platform and storefront support should be verified for the current release. No reliable 2026 compatibility matrix for Windows, Linux, consoles or every PC storefront is published, so avoid promising that a particular console or store can join until the current game and server documentation confirms it.
Self-hosting or renting a managed server?
Both approaches keep a world available when the original player is offline. Self-hosting gives you the files and costs no server-rental fee, while managed hosting trades some control for less maintenance. Current provider plans do not establish a definitive price, performance ranking or hardware recommendation.

Renting is sensible when nobody has a machine that can stay online or nobody wants to administer one. It is not required for a persistent world, and a rental does not remove the need for backups or version checks.
Install Core Keeper Dedicated Server from Steam
Steam Library Tools method
- Open the Steam client and select Library.
- Use the library filter or drop-down that includes tools, then locate the Core Keeper dedicated-server application. The official announcement describes it as an application available to run from the Tools menu.
- Select Install and choose a disk with enough room for the application and your growing world saves. The sources do not publish a fixed storage requirement; leave practical headroom rather than treating a guessed number as official.
- After installation, open the application once. Read the console or window output and the package’s included instructions. A first launch may create configuration and save directories.
- Stop the process cleanly, then decide whether you will use the default relay path or intentionally configure a direct port.
- Start the server again and keep the window or service running while friends connect. The Game ID shown by the server is the code they need for the relay connection.
Names of executable files and configuration files can change between releases. Use the files included with the version Steam installs instead of copying a filename from an old tutorial.
SteamCMD method
A community setup guide documents SteamCMD installation with app ID 1963720. A typical anonymous installation command is:
steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 1963720 validate +quitRun that command in the directory where you want the server package installed, then follow the package’s own launch instructions. SteamCMD syntax, depot contents and required launch steps can change; if the command fails, check the included documentation and confirm that the app ID still identifies the dedicated-server package before troubleshooting further.

Choose relay mode or direct IP mode
Relay mode: the recommended first attempt
Leave the direct port argument unset. In this mode Steam relay handles the session path, and friends join with the server’s Game ID. Pugstorm’s official Steam announcement, “Update 1 – Coming in June!” (2022), says that port forwarding required during experimental testing is “no longer necessary.” The current argument reference and a separate container project describe the same relay-versus-direct distinction.
Relay mode is usually the right choice for a small private group because it avoids asking every player to configure a router. It also keeps the setup independent of whether your internet provider gives you a readily reachable public address. The trade-off is that the relay path is controlled by the game’s networking service rather than by a direct socket you administer.
Direct mode: only when you need it
Setting -port enables direct connections. That port must be reachable from the internet, which means checking the host firewall, any router rule and the address friends use. The -ip argument is relevant only when a port is set; it selects the address to bind for that direct listener. Do not add -ip while expecting relay mode to remain unchanged.
No current official documentation establishes one universally correct port number for every installation. Follow the package’s current argument reference, select an unused port, allow the same port in the host firewall and router, and test from a network outside your home. A direct setup exposes more networking surface and gives you more things to diagnose, so use it for a specific reason rather than as a prerequisite.

Configure the world and player limit
Starting a new world
- Launch the server with no world migration changes.
- Let it create or save a world once, then stop it normally.
- Locate the dedicated-server worlds directory using the path documented in the installed package. The setup guide notes that this folder may not appear until after the first save.
- Back up the newly created world before inviting anyone. Keep at least one copy outside the live server directory.
- Restart the server and confirm that the expected world loads before sharing the Game ID.
Migrating an existing world
- Close the original game or server so no process is writing the save.
- Copy the complete world data to a separate backup location.
- Use the dedicated package’s documented worlds path and naming rules to place a working copy there. Do not overwrite your only backup.
- Start the dedicated server and verify the world, player progress and permissions with the host account first.
- Only after that test should you distribute the new Game ID.
Save-folder names and paths are release-dependent. If the directory is missing, perform one clean save as the setup guide recommends, then inspect the package’s generated folders instead of inventing a path.
Player capacity
The Core Keeper Codex argument reference reports a default of eight players. That is a configuration default, not a laboratory performance result. Increasing the limit can require more resources or make a session unstable; no tested upper limit, CPU recommendation or memory figure is established. Raise it cautiously, add players gradually and keep a restorable backup before changing the setting.
Share access without exposing the world unnecessarily
- Start the server and wait until it reports that the world is ready.
- Copy the displayed Game ID exactly, preserving capitalization and every character.
- Send it through a private group chat or direct message to the people who should play.
- Tell players which game/server version you are running and ask them to update if the join attempt reports a version mismatch.
- Do not post the code on a public page. The setup guidance specifically recommends backing up before making connection details public, because anyone who obtains the code may attempt to join.
The Game ID is for the relay connection. A direct-IP setup instead requires the address and port you configured, plus a network path that can reach them.
Keep the server available and maintain it safely
Prevent accidental shutdowns
- Disable automatic sleep or hibernation on the host during the hours your group plays.
- Keep the server process running in a dedicated window or service account rather than inside a player’s temporary game session.
- Do not close the process by killing the window while the world is saving. Use the package’s normal shutdown behavior.
- Record where the world directory and backups live so another trusted administrator can recover the server.
Use a conservative update routine
- Tell players the server will be offline.
- Stop the dedicated server cleanly.
- Copy the entire world directory to a dated backup location.
- Update the dedicated-server package through Steam or SteamCMD.
- Read the new package instructions and compare its available arguments with your previous launch settings.
- Start the server privately, load the world and test a join before announcing that the world is open again.
The argument reference cited for this guide is based on package 1.2.1.5 and is not a promise that every later release keeps identical switches. Treat an update as a reason to re-check, not merely as a file replacement.

Troubleshoot the problems that stop most connections
The dedicated server is not listed in Steam Tools
Confirm that you are viewing the library’s tools rather than only installed games, and search for the dedicated-server application by its full name. If the client still does not show it, use SteamCMD with app ID 1963720 and then read the package documentation. Storefront availability can change, so verify the current distribution method instead of relying on a screenshot from an old guide.
SteamCMD downloads or validates incorrectly
Check the command spelling, run validation again, and ensure the installation account can write to the chosen directory. If anonymous login or the app ID is rejected, consult the package’s included instructions for the current release. Do not copy an executable from an unrelated game installation.
Friends cannot join with the Game ID
- Confirm that the server process has finished loading the world and is still running.
- Have the player re-enter the Game ID character for character and update the game client.
- Check that the host is using relay mode rather than accidentally supplying a direct-port configuration.
- Test with one player first. If one person joins and another cannot, compare their game versions and storefronts before changing network settings.
- If the current release documents a relay outage or service limitation, wait for that service to recover or use a deliberately configured direct setup.
A direct connection times out
Verify that the configured port is unused, the host firewall allows it, the router forwards it to the correct machine and the external address is the one friends are using. Confirm that -ip binds to an address present on the host. Test from outside the home network; a test from the same LAN can succeed even when an internet connection is not reachable.

The world or worlds folder is missing
Launch once, create or save a world, stop normally and inspect the directories generated by that first save. Then use the package’s documented worlds path. Never delete the original save while experimenting; copy it first and restore the backup if the migrated world does not load.

The session becomes unstable after increasing slots
Return to the documented default of eight, restart and compare behavior with fewer simultaneous players. The reference warns that larger limits may need more resources or destabilize the session, but it does not provide a tested capacity table. Treat stability, not a larger number in a configuration file, as the acceptance test.
What to verify before paying for managed hosting
If you choose a rental, ask for concrete answers rather than assuming every “Core Keeper server” plan is equivalent:
- Which game and server versions are supported, and how quickly are updates deployed?
- Can you download the complete world and restore an earlier backup yourself?
- Where is the server region, and can you move it if most players live elsewhere?
- Are player slots fixed, configurable or billed separately?
- Is the Game ID relay path supported, or does the service require a direct port?
- Who handles restarts, operating-system patches and failed hardware?
- What happens to the world when a subscription ends?
Compare the answers with the effort of leaving your own machine online. No current price, provider quality score or independent uptime figure is established here, so a specific service should not be treated as endorsed merely because it advertises managed Core Keeper hosting.

- Install the dedicated-server application from Steam Tools or SteamCMD.
- Read the instructions included with the exact package version.
- Start once to generate the save location, then make a dated backup.

For most groups, that sequence delivers a persistent Core Keeper world without router configuration. Direct networking and rented hosting remain optional choices for groups whose requirements justify their additional configuration or recurring cost.
