1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a vanilla DayZ dedicated server, Bohemia Interactive publishes a baseline of 6 GB RAM, a dual-core 2.4 GHz Intel or 2.5 GHz AMD Athlon processor, and 2.5 GB of storage. Bohemia recommends an SSD for the installation and logs. In practice, a community-maintained setup guide advises planning for 8 GB RAM and a 20 GB SSD at its entry tier, or 16 GB RAM and 40 GB NVMe for a more comfortable setup. Those higher figures are planning estimates, not replacement official requirements.
The short answer: what hardware should you plan for?
The correct specification depends on whether you mean Bohemia Interactive’s published minimum or a machine intended to run a populated, modified server reliably. The official figures are a starting point. They do not promise a particular player count, tick rate, mod load, restart schedule, or operating-system configuration.

- Official memory baseline: 6 GB RAM.
- Practical memory target: 8 GB for a small or lightly modified installation; 16 GB gives substantially more room for mods, logs and other services, according to a community setup guide.
- Official processor baseline: Intel dual-core at 2.4 GHz or AMD dual-core Athlon at 2.5 GHz.
- Practical processor guidance: the same community guide lists four cores at 2.4 GHz as its minimum and six or more cores at 3.5 GHz as its recommended tier, arguing that gameplay logic is largely single-threaded and that clock speed matters more than simply adding cores.
- Official storage baseline: 2.5 GB, with an SSD recommended for installation and logs.
- Practical storage target: 20 GB on an SSD at the guide’s minimum tier, or 40 GB on NVMe for its recommended tier.
- Network planning: the guide estimates 10 Mbps upload as a minimum and 50 Mbps or more as a recommended target, with UDP ports 2302 through 2305 forwarded. These are not Bohemia’s published universal bandwidth requirements.
Use the official numbers to determine whether a machine can start the server. Use the higher planning figures when the server will be public, heavily modded, shared with other services, or expected to run continuously.
Official requirements versus planning headroom
Bohemia’s dedicated-server requirements and the community guide answer different questions. Bohemia’s page defines a compact baseline for the server software. The guide tries to describe a workable self-hosting environment with space for updates, configuration, logs and additional workload.

| Resource | Bohemia published server requirement | Community setup guide estimate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows Server 12–16 or Windows 10 or greater; Linux | Windows Server 2016 or Ubuntu 20.04 minimum; Windows Server 2022 or Ubuntu 22.04 recommended | The guide’s versions are examples, not a new official compatibility statement. Check current support before installing. |
| CPU | Intel dual-core 2.4 GHz or AMD dual-core Athlon 2.5 GHz | Four cores at 2.4 GHz minimum; six or more cores at 3.5 GHz recommended | Only the first column is Bohemia’s published baseline. The guide emphasizes per-core speed. |
| RAM | 6 GB | 8 GB minimum; 16 GB recommended | Higher values provide working headroom; actual use changes with players, mods and other processes. |
| Storage | 2.5 GB; SSD highly recommended for installation and logs | 20 GB SSD minimum; 40 GB NVMe recommended | Extra capacity accommodates working files, mods, logs, backups and updates. |
| Network | Not specified in the extracted official server requirements | 10 Mbps upload minimum; 50 Mbps or more recommended; UDP 2302–2305 forwarded | Treat these as the guide’s estimates, not a guaranteed requirement for every server. |
No verified benchmark establishes a single RAM, CPU or bandwidth figure for every DayZ population and mod combination. A server with the minimum specification may launch while still becoming unstable under a larger population or a demanding mod set.
How much RAM does a DayZ server need?
6 GB: the published baseline
Bohemia lists 6 GB of RAM for the dedicated server. This is the figure to use when checking the official minimum, not a promise that 6 GB will remain comfortable after adding mods, monitoring tools, backups or other applications.
8 GB: sensible entry-level headroom
The community setup guide places 8 GB at its minimum practical tier. That gives the operating system and the server more breathing room than the official figure, but it is still better suited to a small installation than to a busy public server with a large workshop collection.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
16 GB: a safer target for growth
The guide recommends 16 GB. More memory is useful when the server loads many mods, retains larger logs, runs scheduled backup software, or shares a machine with a web panel, database or monitoring agent. It does not by itself solve CPU contention, slow storage or an inadequate upload connection.
When sizing RAM, reserve capacity for the operating system and every service that will run beside DayZ. Do not treat all installed RAM as available to the game process. Watch actual memory use after connecting players and enabling the complete mod list; the guide’s figures are estimates, and no named benchmark was verified for a universal workload.

CPU: clock speed, cores and single-thread limits
Bohemia’s published processor baseline is an Intel dual-core at 2.4 GHz or an AMD dual-core Athlon at 2.5 GHz. The community guide recommends four cores at 2.4 GHz as a minimum and six or more cores at 3.5 GHz as its higher tier.
The guide describes gameplay logic as primarily single-threaded, so a high clock speed can matter more than a large core count. Additional cores still help the operating system, background services and tasks that can run in parallel; they simply do not guarantee that the main simulation thread will run faster.

Choosing between two candidate machines
- Prefer the newer processor with the higher sustained per-core clock when the alternatives have similar memory and storage.
- Do not buy a many-core, low-clock server solely because its core count is larger.
- Leave CPU capacity for operating-system work, backups, log processing and administration tools.
- For a public or modded server, treat the guide’s six-plus-core, 3.5 GHz tier as a planning target rather than an official DayZ rule.
Thermal throttling can undermine a nominal clock speed. A continuously running home server should have adequate cooling and a power plan that does not repeatedly drop processor frequency.
Storage: capacity is small, but an SSD still matters
The official storage requirement is 2.5 GB, and Bohemia recommends an SSD for the installation and logs. The community guide raises that to 20 GB on an SSD at its minimum tier and 40 GB on NVMe in its recommended tier.
The larger numbers are about operating room, not a hidden official game size. A practical allocation must cover the server files, downloaded workshop content, configuration, logs, temporary update files and backups. Keeping free space also prevents an update or an expanding log directory from filling the volume and stopping the service.

A 2 TB SSD is therefore convenient capacity rather than a DayZ requirement. Choose a larger drive when the same disk will hold several game instances, retained backups or other applications. For a single server, fast, reliable storage with adequate free space is more important than buying a particular capacity.
Operating-system choices
Windows
Bohemia lists Windows Server and Windows 10-or-newer environments. The community guide uses Windows Server 2016 as an example minimum and Windows Server 2022 as an example recommended version. Those labels come from the guide; verify current DayZ and operating-system support before deployment, especially when selecting a newer Windows release.
Linux
Bohemia also lists Linux, and its Linux hosting instructions demonstrate SteamCMD installation. The same instructions explicitly warn: Do not run the server as root. Create a dedicated, unprivileged account, keep server files owned by that account, and grant administrative access through the operating system rather than running the game process with unrestricted privileges.
Linux can reduce overhead and is convenient for unattended administration, but it requires comfort with users, permissions, firewall rules and service management. Windows may be easier for administrators who prefer graphical tools. Neither choice changes the RAM, CPU or storage figures above.
Network requirements and port forwarding
The community guide estimates at least 10 Mbps of upload capacity and recommends 50 Mbps or more. These figures depend on the number of connected players, server configuration, other traffic on the connection and the guide’s assumptions; they are not a universal Bohemia specification.

Forward the documented UDP ports
The guide identifies UDP ports 2302, 2303, 2304 and 2305. On a home connection, forward those ports from the router to the host’s local IP address, then permit the same traffic in the host firewall. Give the server a DHCP reservation or static local address so the forwarding rule does not point to the wrong machine after a reboot.
- Assign the host a stable private address on the local network.
- Create UDP forwarding rules for ports 2302–2305 to that address.
- Allow the selected server executable and those UDP ports through the operating-system firewall.
- Restart the server and test from a connection outside the home network; testing only from inside the LAN can hide forwarding errors.
- Check that another service is not already using the selected ports.
Carrier-grade NAT, a provider firewall or a double-router arrangement can prevent inbound connections even when local rules look correct. In that case, ask the internet provider for a public address, place the forwarding rule on the upstream router, or use a rented host with externally reachable ports.
Self-hosting versus renting a server
Self-hosting gives you control over the machine, files, firewall and update schedule. It also makes you responsible for the router, public address, backups, patching, monitoring, power and troubleshooting. Renting a game server, virtual private server or dedicated server shifts much of the hardware and network administration to the provider, but you must verify what resources are actually allocated and which controls are included.
| Decision factor | Self-hosted at home or in your own facility | Rented game server, VPS or dedicated server |
|---|---|---|
| CPU and RAM | You choose the hardware and can upgrade it, but must pay for the entire machine. | Compare guaranteed or shared CPU, RAM limits and any oversubscription policy. |
| Network | Depends on your upload service, router, public address and port-forwarding ability. | Usually includes an Internet-routable address; verify region, limits and traffic policy. |
| Mods and workshop files | Full filesystem control, subject to your own storage and maintenance. | Check whether the panel supports the required mods and manual file access. |
| Backups | You design and test the backup and restore process. | Confirm backup frequency, retention, storage location and restore charges. |
| Administration | You handle operating-system updates, security, logs and restarts. | A control panel may simplify tasks, but service scope varies. |
| Location and latency | Players connect to your home or chosen facility. | Select a region near the player group and check the actual network path. |
| Cost over time | Consider hardware, electricity, Internet service and replacement parts. | Compare the recurring renewal price, resource limits and migration terms. |
Do not select a host solely by advertised storage. Confirm allocated CPU performance, RAM, SSD or NVMe type, mod support, port and firewall controls, geographic region, backups, restore options, panel access and renewal pricing. No current provider plan or guaranteed resource allocation is established here, so those details require a separate check before purchase.

- Install SteamCMD from the official Steam distribution for your operating system.
- Choose a data directory on the SSD or NVMe volume and ensure the dedicated server account can read and write it.
- Use SteamCMD to sign in anonymously and update application
223350. A typical invocation issteamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 223350 validate +quit; adapt the executable path and installation directory to your platform. - Apply the required configuration files and launch parameters, then start the server under the dedicated, non-root account on Linux.
- After an update, review logs and confirm that the complete mod set loads before inviting players.
Keep a backup of configuration and persistence data before updates. Validate the installation only when you understand that file verification can replace changed files; preserve custom configuration outside files that the updater may overwrite.
Important launch and configuration controls
Bohemia’s server configuration documentation lists launch parameters including -port, -profiles, -cpuCount, -limitFPS, -mod and -serverMod. Use the current official configuration documentation for syntax and semantics rather than copying an old command line or guessing which parameter controls a setting.
-portselects the server’s network port; align it with the firewall and forwarding plan.-profilesidentifies where profiles and logs are written; place them on the SSD and monitor growth.-cpuCountand-limitFPSaffect scheduling and workload; test changes instead of assuming that a larger value always improves simulation.-modloads client-facing modifications, while-serverModis for server-side content. Keep the list and order consistent with the clients’ required collection.
Public-hive rules and player-count limits
Hardware is only one part of operating a public server. Bohemia’s public-hive rules document, labeled version 12.18, states that public-hive player count may be between 30 and 60 and sets operational and monetization restrictions, including limits on restarts. Because the retrieved document is version-labeled rather than clearly dated, check the current policy before treating those rules as current.
The document also warns: Breach of any of these rules may result in a temporary or permanent removal of the server.
A server that meets the hardware baseline can still be unsuitable for the public hive if its configuration or operation violates those rules.
Common failure modes and fixes
The server starts but players cannot join
- Confirm UDP 2302–2305 are forwarded to the correct private address.
- Check the host firewall and any upstream router or provider firewall.
- Test from outside the local network and look for carrier-grade NAT or double NAT.
- Verify that the configured
-portmatches the port you opened.
Performance degrades as players or mods are added
- Monitor per-core CPU usage, total RAM, disk activity and network upload while reproducing the problem.
- Move from the official 6 GB baseline toward the guide’s 8 GB or 16 GB planning tiers when memory is exhausted.
- Prioritize a faster sustained CPU core when the simulation thread is saturated.
- Review mods one at a time and remove unused content; extra RAM cannot compensate for a script or mod that monopolizes the main thread.
Updates fail or files disappear
- Run SteamCMD with an account that owns the installation directory.
- Stop the server before updating and back up persistence and configuration data.
- Check free disk space; the 2.5 GB official figure does not include update staging files, logs or backups.
- On Linux, ensure the service runs as the dedicated non-root user and that permissions were not changed by a root-owned maintenance command.
Logs fill the disk
Place profiles and logs on the SSD, monitor their growth and define a retention policy. The official recommendation for SSD storage addresses responsiveness, while the community guide’s larger capacity gives room for retained operational data; neither replaces routine log management.
Do not confuse client and server requirements
Steam’s DayZ client listing gives 8 GB RAM as a minimum and 12 GB as recommended for the game installed on a player’s computer. Those figures describe the client, not the dedicated server. Use Bohemia’s server page for server baselines and the client listing only when checking a player’s gaming PC.
Quick Recap
A practical sizing checklist
- Decide whether the server is private, lightly modded or a public-hive installation.
- Use 6 GB RAM, the published CPU baseline and 2.5 GB storage only as a minimum compatibility check.
- For self-hosting, start planning at 8 GB RAM and 20 GB SSD; choose 16 GB RAM and 40 GB NVMe when you need room for mods, logs, backups and other services.
- Favor strong per-core CPU performance; treat four cores at 2.4 GHz and six-plus cores at 3.5 GHz as community planning tiers, not official rules.
- Reserve a stable IP address, forward UDP 2302–2305 and verify firewall and NAT behavior from an external connection.
- Install and update application
223350with SteamCMD, using a dedicated non-root Linux account where applicable. - Review the current public-hive policy before opening the server to the public, especially player-count, restart and monetization rules.
- Measure the running workload after players and mods are present, then upgrade the bottleneck rather than buying hardware based on core count or disk capacity alone.
