For a private PC server in 2026, install the DayZ Dedicated Server with SteamCMD, name a configuration file in the launch command, open the game and query ports on your network, then maintain mods, persistence data, updates and graceful shutdowns. Console hosting is a separate route: the official FAQ published in 2019 names Nitrado as the console partner, but it does not establish current pricing or availability.
Choose the hosting route before you install anything
DayZ hosting is not one universal setup. Your platform, willingness to administer a machine, expected player group and need for mods determine the sensible route.

Self-hosted PC server
A self-hosted PC server gives you direct access to the executable, configuration, persistence files, logs and mod folders. You are also responsible for keeping the computer online, securing the operating system, configuring the firewall and router, applying updates, checking logs and recovering from mistakes. A home computer must remain available whenever your group wants to play, and your internet connection must accept inbound traffic.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Managed PC game-server host
A managed host removes much of the operating-system and network administration. The provider supplies the machine and control panel, while you still choose server settings, passwords, missions, mods, administrators and community rules. Features, supported platforms, capacity, backup tools, prices and cancellation terms differ by provider and plan, so verify those details on the provider’s current service page rather than relying on an old guide. One option is Godlike.Host’s DayZ server hosting, which runs on a Pterodactyl-based game panel, offers up to three free backups a day with restore and has 24/7 live chat or ticket support; see the current plans.

Private console server
Console hosting follows a different purchasing path from the PC dedicated-server files described below. DayZ’s official private-console FAQ, published in 2019, says that servers are hosted by its partner Nitrado. That statement identifies the partner at the time of publication; it does not confirm today’s plans, prices, regions or feature list. Check the current official console information and provider offering before paying.
| Decision | Self-hosted PC | Managed PC host | Private console server |
|---|---|---|---|
| Installation | You install and update the dedicated server. | The provider supplies the server environment; panel procedures vary. | Use the console hosting route identified by current official information. |
| Control | Direct access to files, launch arguments, logs and operating system. | Control depends on the provider’s panel and plan. | Options depend on the current console service. |
| Maintenance | You handle operating-system security, ports, updates, mods and backups. | The provider maintains the host, but you still administer the DayZ community and settings. | Provider and console-service responsibilities apply; verify current terms. |
| Mods | Supports the PC mod workflow when each mod’s instructions and compatibility allow it. | Depends on the provider’s supported mod controls. | Do not assume PC Workshop mods are available on console. |
| Cost factors | Hardware, electricity, connectivity and your administration time. | Recurring rental charge and any plan limits or add-ons. | Current rental price and availability must be checked directly. |
Check the published PC requirements and the workload they do not promise
Bohemia Interactive’s published server-requirements page lists a baseline of a dual-core Intel processor at 2.4 GHz or an AMD Athlon at 2.5 GHz, 6 GB of RAM and 2.5 GB of storage. It recommends an SSD for the installation and logs. Those figures are a publisher baseline, not a tested capacity guarantee for a particular population, view-distance configuration, persistence size or mod collection.
| Resource | Published baseline | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Dual-core Intel 2.4 GHz or AMD Athlon 2.5 GHz | Baseline hardware listed by Bohemia; not a promise of a target player count. |
| Memory | 6 GB RAM | Minimum-style published figure; modded or busy servers may require more, but no universal capacity number is established here. |
| Storage | 2.5 GB | Published baseline for the server; logs, Workshop content, profiles, persistence and backups need additional space. |
| Drive type | SSD recommended | Useful for installation and log activity, especially when persistence and mod files grow. |
| Operating system | Windows and Linux are listed | The documented SteamCMD procedure below is Linux-specific. Use current Bohemia instructions for Windows rather than treating this command as a Windows recipe. |
Plan beyond the baseline if the machine will run other services, host a large community, retain many backups or load a substantial mod set. There is no evidence here for a single “RAM per player” formula, so size the host from your actual workload and monitor it after launch.
Install the dedicated server with SteamCMD on Linux
Bohemia’s Linux hosting instructions use SteamCMD. The stable branch uses app ID 223350; the experimental branch uses 1042420. The same update command is used later when you update the installation.
Prepare a non-root account
Create or choose a normal user for the server files and service. Bohemia explicitly warns against running the server as root: a compromise would have broader consequences. Give the account only the permissions it needs for the server directory, logs and backup destination.

Install SteamCMD and download the stable server
Install SteamCMD using the current instructions for your Linux distribution, then run the documented command with paths and account details appropriate to your machine:
~/servers/steamcmd/steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir ~/servers/dayz-server/ +login your_login +app_update 223350 +quit
This command places the stable server in ~/servers/dayz-server/. Replace the example account and paths; do not copy a path that does not exist on your host. To retrieve the experimental branch, use app ID 1042420 in the update command instead. Keep the branch choice deliberate: mixing an experimental server with production clients or mods can create compatibility problems.
Update deliberately
Run the SteamCMD update operation during a maintenance window, after recording the current server and mod state. Confirm that clients can use the new build before reopening the server to the whole group. A server update does not guarantee that every Workshop mod is compatible with the new game build.
Create a configuration file and name it at launch
The filename itself is not special. The launch parameter tells DayZ which file to read. Bohemia’s configuration documentation shows -config=serverDZ.cfg as an example and warns that omitting the config selection leaves mandatory settings unread, preventing the server from launching.
Settings worth deciding first
- Server identity: choose the visible name and description that players will recognize.
- Access control: set a password for a private group and define who receives administrative access.
- Mission: select the mission appropriate to the map and server version you intend to run.
- Persistence: understand where storage and profile data are written before inviting players.
- Query visibility: set
steamQueryPortin the configuration so the server can be discovered through the relevant browser path. - Mod and storage paths: use the syntax documented for your current server build and each mod’s instructions.
Keep the configuration under version control or make dated copies before changing it. A small syntax error can stop startup, and an undocumented change makes later troubleshooting harder.

Launch the server
Bohemia’s Linux example is:
./DayZServer -config=serverDZ.cfg -port=2301 -BEpath=battleye -profiles=profiles -dologs -adminlog -netlog -freezecheck
The example uses game port 2301. The source also demonstrates 2302 as an example game-port value in configuration discussions; neither number is a universal prescription. Use one deliberate value and make your firewall and router rules match it.
-config=serverDZ.cfgselects the file whose mandatory settings are read.-port=2301sets the game connection port in this example.-BEpath=battleyepoints to the BattlEye-related files used by the launch.-profiles=profilesselects the profile directory for logs and related runtime files.-dologs,-adminlogand-netlogenable the corresponding logging options shown in the official example.-freezecheckenables the freeze-check option shown in that example.
Command-line options and syntax can change with a server build. Compare your final command with the current Bohemia documentation before deploying it, especially when adding mission, mod, server-side-mod or storage-path arguments.
Open the right ports and verify reachability
DayZ distinguishes the game port from the Steam query port. The game port is supplied as a launch parameter such as -port=2301. steamQueryPort is set in the server configuration and relates to browser visibility. They are different settings and should not be substituted for one another.
Build the network path
- Choose the host’s local address and reserve it in your router or DHCP configuration so forwarding does not silently point to a different machine later.
- Allow the selected game port and query port through the host firewall using the protocol requirements documented for your current server build.
- Forward the same ports from the router to the server’s reserved local address if the machine is behind NAT.
- Check whether your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound traffic. If it does, ordinary port forwarding may not make the server reachable from the public internet.
- Start the server and inspect its logs for binding or firewall errors, then test from a separate connection rather than assuming that a local join proves outside reachability.
There is no single forwarding recipe that works on every router, firewall or provider network. Treat the port numbers in Bohemia’s examples as examples, not as a guarantee that your network needs exactly those values.
Let players join
Nitrado’s PC connection guide, dated December 2022, describes joining through Steam favorites, direct launch and the DayZ launcher. Its launcher workflow may ask a player to install the mods or downloadable content required by a server. Because the interface can change, give players the server address, port, password and current mod collection, and confirm the steps against the launcher version they actually see.

Add mods without making updates unmanageable
Bohemia’s Linux example includes Steam Workshop downloads and launch arguments for loading mods. A modded server is an operating process, not a one-time checkbox: every added item creates another version, dependency and persistence concern.
Use a controlled mod workflow
- Write down the exact mod identifiers, load order and any required dependencies before changing the live server.
- Read each mod’s current installation and compatibility notes. Do not assume that two popular mods are compatible or that a game update leaves every mod working.
- Download or update mods during a maintenance window, then start the server with the intended launch arguments.
- Join as an administrator and test spawning, inventories, locations, persistence and any mod-specific features before reopening to players.
- Keep a recoverable copy of persistence data and the previous configuration before removing, replacing or substantially updating a mod.
The available documentation does not establish universal compatibility rules or a guaranteed safe update sequence for every mod set. When a mod author specifies a dependency or order, treat that instruction as part of your deployment plan.
Separate test and live changes
If the server has valuable characters or a public community, test a new game build or mod revision on a separate copy first. A test instance lets you detect startup failures and data changes without risking the live persistence directory. Keep its ports and storage paths distinct so the two instances cannot overwrite one another.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Protect persistence and shut down gracefully
DayZ writes player and world state to server storage. Bohemia recommends a graceful shutdown to avoid negative effects on player characters and server-storage saving. Do not treat killing the process, powering off the machine or closing a terminal as an ordinary maintenance method.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use a shutdown procedure
- Announce maintenance to connected players and give them time to move to a safe location.
- Use the server’s supported graceful-shutdown method rather than terminating the process abruptly.
- Wait for the process to exit and confirm in the logs that storage has been saved.
- Only then apply operating-system updates, replace files or reboot the host.
Back up what you can restore
Back up the persistence directory, configuration, profile/log settings and any mod manifest that you need to reconstruct the server. Keep at least one copy separate from the live disk, and periodically verify that an archive can actually be opened. The official material does not prescribe a universal backup interval; choose a cadence based on how often your world changes and how much progress your community can afford to lose. Always create an additional backup before a game update, mod removal, migration or configuration change that affects storage.

Troubleshoot the failures that stop most first launches
The server exits immediately
- Confirm that the executable is being started from the intended server directory.
- Check that the file named by
-config=...exists and is readable by the non-root server account. - Look for a syntax error or missing mandatory setting in the configuration.
- Verify that the selected mission, branch and mod arguments match the installed build.
- Read the profile and server logs before changing several variables at once.
The most important configuration mistake is omitting the -config option: the server cannot identify the file that contains mandatory settings.
The server runs but does not appear in the browser
- Confirm that
steamQueryPortis present in the configuration and that the query port is allowed through the host firewall. - Check router forwarding and make sure it targets the current local address.
- Verify that the server is not bound only to an inaccessible interface.
- Test direct connection separately from browser discovery; a visibility problem and a reachability problem are not always the same failure.
Players cannot connect from outside your home
- Recheck the public address, game port and password you gave them.
- Test from a different network, such as a mobile connection, because a local client can succeed even when NAT forwarding is wrong.
- Investigate carrier-grade NAT or inbound filtering by the internet provider.
- Check both operating-system and router firewall rules, and confirm that the server is listening on the port you selected.
A player is rejected for missing or mismatched mods
- Compare the server’s active mod list with the player’s installed versions and dependencies.
- Have the player use the launcher’s offered mod installation only after confirming that the server’s list is current.
- Remove or roll back the recently changed mod on a test copy first; do not delete live persistence data as a first reaction.
Characters or storage appear to have lost progress
- Stop making changes and preserve the current files so you do not overwrite evidence.
- Review the shutdown and update logs for an interrupted save or failed migration.
- Compare the live persistence directory with the most recent known-good backup.
- Restore only after the server is stopped gracefully and the current state has been archived.
Run the server as an ongoing service
A successful first join is the beginning of administration. Keep a short change record containing the server build, branch, configuration revision, mod list, port values and backup location. That record turns an unexplained outage into a reversible change.
- Before an update: announce downtime, shut down gracefully, back up persistence and record the current versions.
- After an update: start with the intended configuration, inspect logs, join as an administrator and test persistence before inviting everyone back.
- After a mod change: test dependencies, load order, joining and storage on a separate copy whenever the world matters.
- During normal operation: watch disk space, log growth, memory pressure and repeated errors instead of waiting for players to report a failure.
- For security: use a non-root account, restrict administrative credentials, keep the operating system updated and expose only the ports the server needs.
What the published evidence can—and cannot—tell you about capacity and price
The 6 GB RAM and 2.5 GB storage figures are official baseline requirements, not a benchmark for a specific number of players. No reliable universal capacity claim can be made without the map, population, server settings, mod set and host conditions. Start with the published baseline only for a lightly loaded test, then observe the real machine and expand resources when your measured workload requires it.

Self-hosting has costs that do not appear in the game-server download: a suitable computer, electricity, internet service, replacement hardware and your time. Managed hosting adds a recurring provider charge. The available evidence does not establish current prices, service-level guarantees or capacity for a particular plan, so compare those items using current provider terms rather than an old table or a generic “slots” claim.
Quick Recap
A practical launch checklist
- Choose PC self-hosting, managed PC hosting or console hosting based on platform and maintenance tolerance.
- For PC self-hosting, confirm Windows or Linux support and size the machine beyond the published baseline when your workload demands it.
- Install SteamCMD under a non-root account and use app ID
223350for stable or1042420for experimental. - Create the configuration file and include its exact filename in
-config=.... - Select a game port and query port, then align firewall, router and configuration settings.
- Launch with a profile directory so logs and related files have a known location.
- Test a clean server before adding mods; document every mod, dependency and load-order change.
- Back up persistence before updates, migrations and risky mod changes.
- Shut down gracefully and verify that storage has saved before maintenance or power-off.
- For console hosting, verify the current official partner, price, region and features because the cited official FAQ is from 2019.
