For a persistent Project Zomboid world, install the free Dedicated Server tool, launch it as a separate process, configure the generated files in your Zomboid user folder, forward the required UDP ports, and keep every player on a compatible build. In-game hosting is quicker for an occasional session, but a dedicated server can remain online while its operator is away.

This guide covers Windows, Linux and headless machines, including Build 42 version selection, Java memory settings, router and firewall rules, configuration paths, mods, backups, updates and the failure modes that most often prevent players from connecting.

Choose the hosting model before installing anything

Your first decision determines who must keep a computer running and who is responsible for maintenance.

Option Best fit What you give up
In-game Host A small group playing together for a short session, particularly on a LAN. The world stops when the host closes the game or crashes. The host’s game client also shares CPU, memory and network capacity with the server.
Self-managed dedicated server A group that wants the world available while the host is away, or wants full control over files, mods and operating-system settings. You manage updates, Java heap size, firewall and router rules, configuration, backups, mods and uptime.
Managed game-server provider Players who want persistence without maintaining a machine or changing a home router. There is a recurring charge and the provider may limit resources, backups, locations, support or mod workflows. Compare current terms rather than assuming one plan fits every group.

For a long-running community, a dedicated process is usually the practical middle ground: it separates the world from an individual player’s desktop while preserving control over the installation.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Match the game build first

Build compatibility is a hard requirement. Current 2026 setup guides report Build 42.21 Stable as of 28 September 2026. Build 41 remains available through the legacy41 branch, and Build 41 saves do not load in Build 42. Because branches can change with a patch, check the live branch label in Steam or SteamCMD immediately before installation and again before an update.

  • Choose one branch for the server and all clients.
  • Do not open a Build 42 save with a Build 41 server, or the reverse.
  • Record the selected branch and build number so every player can verify it before joining.
  • Make a complete backup before changing branches; treat a branch change as a migration, not a harmless toggle.

Requirements and preparation

Machine and operating system

You can run the server on a Windows desktop, a Linux machine or a headless Linux host. A separate machine is not mandatory, but the server must have enough memory for Java, the operating system and any other services sharing the host. A headless host still needs a way to transfer files, edit text configuration and restart the process.

Steam’s published system requirements describe the game client, not a universal dedicated-server size. They should not be treated as a sizing formula for a modded server or a particular player count.

Information to gather

  • The branch and build you intend to run.
  • The host machine’s available memory after the operating system and other services are accounted for.
  • The machine’s local address and the router’s public address if people will connect from outside your LAN.
  • A secure administrator password and, separately, any player join password.
  • A backup destination, such as an external SSD for server backups, if the world is important.

Install the dedicated-server files

Windows or another desktop with Steam

  1. Open Steam and select Library.
  2. Enable the Tools filter or search for Project Zomboid Dedicated Server.
  3. Install the tool on the drive where you want the server files. The game client and server tool can be on the same computer, but they do not need to share a folder.
  4. Select the intended branch in the tool’s properties if you are deliberately running Build 41. Otherwise use the current stable branch and verify the displayed build.

Do not use Steam’s ordinary Play or Launch button for the dedicated process. The supplied server script sets the required arguments and creates the initial configuration.

Headless Linux or an automated machine with SteamCMD

  1. Install SteamCMD using your distribution’s supported package or Valve’s current installation method.
  2. Start SteamCMD and sign in anonymously with login anonymous.
  3. Install or validate the dedicated-server app with app_update 380870 validate.
  4. Use the branch selection supported by your SteamCMD build when you intentionally need legacy41; otherwise leave the installation on the current stable branch.
  5. Exit SteamCMD, note the installation directory and run the supplied Linux start script from that directory.

The app ID 380870 identifies the dedicated-server tool. Validation is useful after an interrupted download or an update, but it does not convert a save between incompatible game branches.

Launch once, then set Java memory deliberately

Use the supplied start scripts

On Windows, run StartServer64.bat. On Linux, run start-server.sh. The first successful start generates server files and prompts for an initial administrator password. Stop the process cleanly after this first run before editing files or copying the world.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Find the heap settings

The server’s Java heap is controlled by -Xms (initial heap) and -Xmx (maximum heap). The cited 2026 Windows observation found a shipped script containing -Xms16g -Xmx16g. That is an observation of a default script, not a recommended minimum and not a promise that every server needs 16 GB.

On Windows, inspect the -Xms and -Xmx values in StartServer64.bat. On Linux, the Java options are referenced in ProjectZomboid64.json. Set both values to amounts the machine can sustain while leaving headroom for Java’s non-heap memory, the operating system and other services. A host with less physical memory should not blindly retain a 16 GB request.

A safe tuning process

  1. Stop the server and make a backup of the Zomboid folder.
  2. Measure available physical memory with the server stopped, then reserve space for the operating system and any database, web panel or other service on the machine.
  3. Lower or raise -Xms and -Xmx in small, deliberate steps. Keep the values within the host’s real capacity; do not use swap as a substitute for RAM.
  4. Start the server and watch its console and log output while several players perform normal activities.
  5. If the process is killed, the operating system reports out-of-memory conditions, or the host begins swapping, lower the heap or move other services. If Java reports heap exhaustion while physical memory remains available, increase the maximum cautiously and retest.

There is no well-supported universal RAM number for every mod list and player load. Number of players, map activity, enabled mods and the rest of the machine’s workload all affect the result.

Open the network path without exposing more than necessary

Default ports

Purpose Typical value Protocol and qualification
Main game connection 16261 UDP; the default server port in current setup guides.
Additional player connection 16262 UDP; forward and permit it alongside 16261 for an Internet-connected server.
Steam networking path 8766 UDP may be relevant depending on the networking path. Do not open it automatically for every installation; confirm the active configuration and connection method first.

Router forwarding

  1. Give the server machine a stable local address, either with a reserved DHCP lease or a static address configured according to your network’s rules.
  2. Create UDP forwarding rules for 16261 and 16262 from the router to that local address.
  3. If the server configuration uses a different port, forward the actual configured pair instead of the defaults.
  4. Test from outside your home network, such as a friend’s connection or a mobile hotspot. A test from the same LAN can succeed even when Internet forwarding is wrong.

Host firewall

Allow the server executable or the selected UDP ports through the operating system firewall. Apply the rule to the network profile you actually use and avoid disabling the firewall wholesale. If you run several instances, assign each instance a distinct port pair and document which pair belongs to which world.

Some Internet providers place customers behind carrier-grade NAT. In that situation, router forwarding may not be enough because inbound traffic never reaches your router. Ask the provider about a public address or use a hosting arrangement that supplies inbound connectivity rather than repeatedly opening random ports.

Locate and configure the generated server files

Important paths

Operating system Server configuration directory What it contains
Windows C:Users<name>ZomboidServer Generated server INI files, sandbox settings and related configuration for the running user.
Linux ~/Zomboid/Server The equivalent generated configuration under the account that launches the server.

The multiplayer world is stored under the corresponding Zomboid saves area, not simply beside the installed server binaries. If a service account launches the process, its home directory determines which Zomboid folder is used. Running the script as a different account can therefore appear to “lose” a configuration or save when it has actually created a second user folder.

Core settings

  • The server INI controls visibility, access, passwords and other multiplayer options.
  • Sandbox settings define world rules such as progression and survival parameters.
  • Public-listing fields determine whether the server advertises itself and what information players see.
  • Remote-console settings are separate from the password players enter to join. Keep administrative credentials private and do not paste them into a public listing.

Stop the server before editing. Keep a copy of the original generated files, change one group of settings at a time and start the process again to confirm that the file parses correctly. If a change prevents startup, restore the last known-good copy rather than deleting the world.

Private versus public access

For a private group, leave public-listing fields unset as appropriate and distribute the address, port and join password through a trusted channel. For a public server, fill in the listing fields and publish only the information players need. Never publish the administrator password, remote-console credentials or a full backup path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add mods with both identifiers

Modded servers require two different kinds of identifiers:

  • WorkshopItems contains the Steam Workshop item IDs.
  • Mods contains the mods’ internal loading IDs.

They are not interchangeable. Put the Workshop IDs in the Workshop list and the internal IDs in the mod list, matching the spelling supplied by each mod. Restart the server after changing either list and have every player install the same compatible versions. A server can appear to start while silently failing to load a mod if one of the two lists is incomplete.

Introduce mods one at a time on a test copy of the world. Keep a written list of the order, IDs and versions. Removing a mod that added items or map data can permanently affect a save, so do not experiment on the only copy of a long-running world.

Set player capacity realistically

Current configuration guides identify 32 players as the default configured limit. Project Zomboid Wiki coverage for Build 42.20.3/42.20.4 describes 254 players as a technical handling ceiling, not a performance guarantee. At high populations, map streaming, simulation load and synchronization can degrade badly even if the server accepts the connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Figure How to interpret it
32 The default player limit reported in 2026 server-configuration guides; change it only after testing the machine and network.
254 A reported technical ceiling for specific Build 42.20.3/42.20.4 coverage, not a recommended or guaranteed playable population.

Start with the number your group actually needs. Increase it only after observing CPU, memory, network traffic, map streaming and desynchronization during a busy session. A lower limit that remains responsive is preferable to advertising a theoretical maximum.

Test the server before inviting everyone

  1. Start the server with no mods or only the essential set.
  2. Confirm that the console reaches a ready state without repeated errors.
  3. Join from the host’s LAN using the local address and configured port.
  4. Join from outside the LAN using the public address. If this fails while the LAN test works, inspect forwarding, firewall and carrier-grade NAT rather than changing world settings.
  5. Have two or three players move through different map areas, fight, loot containers and sleep or log out. Watch for memory pressure, crashes and desynchronization.
  6. Stop the server cleanly, restart it and verify that the world, settings and player progress persist.
  7. Only then add the full mod list or raise the player limit.

Back up the world before every risky change

Copy the complete Zomboid user folder, including configuration and world saves. A backup of only the installation directory will not protect the generated server settings or multiplayer world.

  1. Announce a maintenance window and stop the server normally so files are flushed.
  2. Copy the Zomboid folder to a separate destination. An external SSD can hold a convenient offline copy, but it is optional and is not a server requirement.
  3. Label the copy with the date, build, branch and mod list.
  4. Keep more than one historical copy so a corrupted or incompatible update does not overwrite your only recovery point.
  5. Periodically restore a copy to a separate test location and start it there. A backup that has never been tested is only an assumption.

For migration, install the same compatible build on the destination, stop the old process, copy the Zomboid folder into the account that will run the new process, check paths and permissions, then start the destination server. Keep the original untouched until players have confirmed that the migrated world works.

Update without losing the save

  1. Tell players when the server will be offline.
  2. Stop the process cleanly and make a dated copy of the complete Zomboid folder.
  3. Record the current branch, build, configuration and mod versions.
  4. Update the server files through Steam’s tool or SteamCMD. Use validation if the download was interrupted.
  5. Check that clients are on the same compatible build. Do not expect a Build 41 save to load in Build 42.
  6. Start the server with the supplied script and inspect the console for errors before allowing players back in.
  7. Test the world with an administrator account, then announce the server as available.

If an update causes a problem, stop immediately, preserve the affected files for diagnosis and restore the pre-update backup. Do not repeatedly start and overwrite a world while trying random settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes

The process will not start

  • Confirm that you used StartServer64.bat or start-server.sh, not Steam’s normal game launch button.
  • Check that the selected branch and installed files match the intended build.
  • Undo the most recent configuration or mod change from a known-good backup.
  • Inspect the console and logs for Java errors, missing files, malformed settings or permission failures.
  • Verify that the account running the process can read the installation and write to its Zomboid user folder.

Players on the LAN can join, but Internet players cannot

  • Recheck UDP forwarding for 16261 and 16262 and confirm the destination address has not changed.
  • Confirm matching UDP firewall rules on the host.
  • Test from a genuinely external network.
  • Determine whether the Internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound traffic.
  • Check whether the configured port differs from the one you forwarded. Only investigate UDP 8766 when the active Steam networking path calls for it.

Players receive a version or connection mismatch

  • Compare the branch and build shown by the server and each client.
  • Make sure nobody is still on legacy41 while the server is on Build 42, or vice versa.
  • After changing branches, use a save created for that branch rather than assuming the old world is portable.
  • For a modded server, compare both Workshop item IDs and internal mod IDs, then have players update or remove stale copies.

The server runs out of memory or becomes unstable

  • Inspect actual memory use before changing Java limits.
  • Reduce the player limit or remove recently added mods for a controlled test.
  • Lower -Xms and -Xmx if the operating system is swapping or terminating Java.
  • Increase the maximum only when the host has unused physical memory and logs indicate heap pressure.
  • Remember that a large heap does not fix CPU saturation, network problems or a broken mod.

The world or settings appear to have disappeared

  • Check which operating-system account launched the server; each account can have a different Zomboid folder.
  • Look in the user’s Zomboid Server and saves directories rather than only the installation directory.
  • Stop the process before copying or editing files so an active process does not overwrite your changes.
  • Restore the dated backup if files are missing or corrupted.

Security and maintenance checklist

  • Use a long administrator password and keep it separate from the player join password.
  • Expose only the required UDP ports and keep the host operating system patched.
  • Do not publish remote-console credentials or backup locations.
  • Run the server under a dedicated, least-privileged account when the operating system supports it.
  • Keep a dated backup before updates, branch changes, major configuration edits and mod removal.
  • Review logs after restarts and after adding unfamiliar mods.
  • Document the build, ports, memory settings, configuration location and backup location so another trusted operator can recover the server.

When managed hosting is the better choice

Renting a managed instance can remove router configuration, hardware maintenance and some update work. It does not remove the need to choose a compatible branch, configure mods, protect credentials or maintain independent backups. Before committing to a provider, compare its current recurring price, CPU and memory allocation, location, backup controls, support response, player limits, file access and Workshop/mod handling. Those terms vary and were not established as a single universal offer.

If you already have a reliable machine and are comfortable editing files and firewall rules, self-management offers the most control. If the group values uninterrupted availability but nobody can maintain a host, a managed instance may justify its recurring cost.

A repeatable operating routine

  1. Record the branch and build.
  2. Stop the server cleanly at an announced time.
  3. Back up the complete Zomboid folder.
  4. Apply one change: an update, configuration adjustment or mod change.
  5. Start with the supplied script and read the console.
  6. Test a local connection, then an external connection when applicable.
  7. Invite the full group only after the world loads and progress persists across a restart.

Following that sequence keeps version, network, memory and save-file problems separate. It also gives you a known-good restore point whenever a patch or mod changes server behavior.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
