What Farm and Far server hosting involves
Farm and Far is listed on CurseForge for Minecraft 1.20.1 with the Forge mod loader. Its progression keeps a vanilla-like feel while adding farming and cooking systems. The creator’s description on Modpack Index lists 129 mods, so a server needs substantially more memory and setup care than an unmodded 1.20.1 world.
The pack is described as multiplayer-friendly for one to six players. CurseForge’s latest listed pack file was dated July 28, 2026 when checked. Treat that date as a version reference, not a promise that every future release will remain compatible.

The 8 GB and 12 GB figures are hosting guidance published by Game Host Bros. They describe the Java heap, not the entire machine: the operating system, file cache and any control panel also need memory. CurseForge’s desktop guidance (6 GB on a 16 GB computer, or 8 GB on a 24–32 GB computer) is for running the client and should not be treated as a server allocation.
Download the matching server pack
Use Additional Files, not the ordinary client download
- Open Farm and Far’s CurseForge project page and select the Files tab.
- Find Farm-and-Far-v1.3.1-Server-Pack.zip in the additional files for the Minecraft 1.20.1/Forge release you intend to run.
- Check the file name and Minecraft version against the version your players will install. Do not assume the newest client file can use an older server archive.
- Download the archive to the host. Keep an untouched copy so you can restore the original files if an update or configuration change fails.
The server archive is listed at approximately 403 MB. Because it is a purpose-built server pack, you do not need to remove client-only mods by hand. If the matching additional file is unavailable, stop and resolve the version mismatch rather than improvising with a different pack release.
Make a clean server directory
Create a dedicated directory such as FarmAndFarServer on a local SSD or on the data volume supplied by your host. Avoid running the server directly from Downloads, a synchronized cloud folder or a directory shared with another Minecraft instance. A separate folder makes backups, upgrades and rollbacks predictable.

Install Java 17 and verify the runtime
Point the server at a Java 17 binary even if another Java version is installed for a different application. Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge expects Java 17. A Forge forum report documents Unsupported class file major version 66 with a newer JDK 22; switching the launch command to Java 17 resolved that error.
Check the active version
Open a terminal (Linux) or Command Prompt (Windows) and run:
java -versionThe output should identify version 17. If it reports 21, 22 or another release, either call the Java 17 executable by its full path in the launch script or set JAVA_HOME to the Java 17 installation before starting the server. You do not need to uninstall other Java versions; only the runtime used by this server must be correct.

Why not assume Java 21?
Guides disagree about Java requirements for later Minecraft releases: some move to Java 21 at 1.20.5 and later, while others describe Java 17 across 1.17–1.20.x. That disagreement concerns newer versions. Farm and Far’s documented target is 1.20.1, so use Java 17 unless the pack’s own release notes explicitly change the requirement.
Install and start the server on Windows
- Extract the server ZIP into the dedicated directory. Do not nest the files under an extra folder if the archive already contains the intended root.
- Inspect the extracted files for Forge’s installer or launch files. Typical Forge server output includes a Windows batch file named
run.bat. - If the pack provides a Forge installer rather than a ready launch layout, run the installer and choose Install server, pointing it at this directory. Let it finish before launching.
- Double-click
run.bat, or open Command Prompt in the server directory and run it there so errors remain visible. - On the first launch, Forge creates libraries and configuration files and may stop because the EULA has not been accepted. Wait for the process to finish writing files.
- Open
eula.txt, read the Minecraft EULA, change onlyeula=falsetoeula=trueif you agree, save the file, and runrun.batagain.
The first successful start can take longer than later starts while the world and mod data are generated. Do not close the window during active generation unless the log clearly reports a fatal error.
Install and start the server on Linux
- Upload or copy the ZIP to the server and extract it into the dedicated directory.
- Confirm that Java 17 is available with
java -version. If several Java installations exist, use the Java 17 path explicitly. - Look for Forge’s Linux launch script, commonly
run.sh. Grant execute permission if necessary:
chmod +x run.sh- Start it from the server directory:
./run.sh- When the first run stops for the EULA, edit
eula.txt, changeeula=falsetoeula=trueonly if you accept the terms, save, and run./run.shagain. - For a remote machine, run the process inside a service manager or terminal multiplexer so it is not killed when your SSH session closes. Keep the server directory and logs writable by the account that runs Minecraft.
If the archive contains a pack-specific script with a different name, use that script instead of creating a replacement. The Forge-generated script carries the correct library and classpath details for that installation.

Set memory and JVM options safely
Make Xms and Xmx equal
Set the initial and maximum heap to the same value in the Forge launch script or its variables. For an 8 GB allocation, the relevant values should both represent 8 GB; for a 12 GB allocation, both should represent 12 GB. Keeping Xms equal to Xmx avoids repeated heap resizing during play.

Leave enough for the operating system, file cache, monitoring tools and any other services. On a small home computer, an 8 GB heap may require a machine with considerably more than 8 GB installed.
Choose 8 GB or 12 GB based on use
- Start at 8 GB for a lightly populated one-to-few-player world, then watch the server log and operating-system memory use.
- Use 12 GB or more when several players explore different areas, generate chunks frequently, or add sustained farming and automation activity.
- Do not increase RAM to cure every lag problem. A saturated main CPU core, slow storage, a runaway mod or excessive view distance can remain the bottleneck after adding memory.
A third-party VPS guide suggests allocating 70–75% of the machine’s RAM to the JVM. Treat that as a sizing heuristic rather than a Farm and Far requirement: calculate the heap only after reserving memory for the operating system and other workloads.

Configure the world before inviting players
Let the first world finish generating
Start once with no players connected and wait until the console reaches its normal “Done” state. Stop the server through the console’s normal shutdown command, then edit settings. Abruptly terminating the process during first generation risks a partial world or incomplete mod data.
Review server.properties
Open server.properties only after it has been created. Set the world name, difficulty, game mode, player limit and whitelist to match your group. If exploration causes long pauses, lower view-distance and, where available, the simulation-distance setting; fewer loaded chunks reduce CPU, memory and network work but also shorten what players can see and what farms can simulate.

That disables a safety mechanism, so use it only if you understand the recovery consequences and have reliable backups. Lowering view distance and pre-generating or exploring gradually is safer for most groups.
Protect access
- Enable a whitelist before sharing the address if the world is private.
- Use a strong administrator password and grant operator privileges only to people who need them.
- Allow the configured server port through the host firewall and router, if the server is behind one. Players must connect to the address and port configured in
server.properties. - Do not expose remote administration interfaces to the public internet without authentication and an access-control rule.
Install the client pack for every player
- Have each player install the same Farm and Far release selected for the server, targeting Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge.
- Check that the mod list and configuration files are from the same pack version. “Almost the same” is not sufficient: a changed mod, loader build or dependency can produce a missing-mod or registry-mismatch error.
- Launch the pack once locally so its files and configs are created before connecting.
- Connect using the host address and the configured port. If the server is on the same home network, use its local address; remote players need the reachable public address or hosting endpoint.
When a client reports missing mods, mismatched registries or an incompatible Forge version, compare the exact file version on both sides before changing Java or deleting world data.
Backups, updates and rollbacks
Back up before every meaningful change
Stop the server cleanly, then copy the entire server directory or at minimum the world, server.properties, mod configuration directories and any pack-specific data to a separate disk. Keep dated backup generations rather than overwriting a single copy. A backup made before a mod update is the fastest recovery from a broken registry, corrupted chunk or unwanted world-generation change.

- Read the target pack’s release notes and verify that a matching server archive exists.
- Back up the current installation and world.
- Download the corresponding server pack from the matching CurseForge additional file.
- Prepare a new directory and extract the new archive there instead of overwriting the live server.
- Copy only the data you intentionally want to retain, such as the world and reviewed configuration files. Do not blindly carry old mods or libraries into a new pack version.
- Start the new directory with Java 17, accept any new EULA prompt if applicable, and test with an administrator account before opening it to everyone.
- Keep the old directory until the new world loads, players can join, and farms and other critical areas work as expected.

A practical launch checklist
- Server pack is the matching Farm-and-Far server archive, not an unmodified client folder.
- Minecraft and Forge are 1.20.1 on both server and clients.
- Java 17 is the runtime actually invoked by the launch script.
- The machine has at least 8 GB available for the JVM, with 12 GB considered for busier play.
