The reliable way to run Create is to align four things before installing anything: the Minecraft version, the mod loader, the Create build, and the Java version. For a new server on Minecraft 1.21 or newer, NeoForge is usually the starting point. Create 6.0 officially targets Minecraft 1.20.1 and 1.21.1 on Forge and NeoForge; Fabric uses a separately maintained Create port and requires Fabric API.

Install the server in an empty directory, accept the EULA, place the matching Create file in mods, start once, and read the console before adding more mods. Every player must install the same loader and matching Create build on their client.

Choose the Minecraft version and loader first

A loader is the platform that starts and manages mods. The loader must match the mod file: a Forge build will not load on Fabric, and a Fabric build will not load on Forge. Quilt is compatible with Fabric mods in many cases, but it is not a Forge-compatible replacement.

NeoForge is the normal choice for a new 1.21-era server. It targets Minecraft 1.20.2 and later, while legacy Forge remains relevant for older packs. NeoForge is not a drop-in replacement for Forge after 1.20.1, so do not move a Forge pack to NeoForge without checking every mod.

Loader When to choose it Create compatibility described by current releases Important dependency
NeoForge New servers on Minecraft 1.21 and later; also supported by some 1.20.2+ packs Create 6.0 builds for Minecraft 1.20.1 and 1.21.1 are available on NeoForge No separate Flywheel download for Create 6.0
Forge Older modpacks and packs that explicitly require Forge Create 6.0 builds exist for Minecraft 1.20.1 and 1.21.1 on Forge No separate Flywheel download for Create 6.0
Fabric A pack whose other mods are Fabric-only, or a Fabric-specific Create setup A separately maintained Create port; verify the exact Minecraft version and build Fabric API must be installed with Create
Quilt Only when the complete pack is confirmed to run on Quilt Not Forge-compatible; the Create build must explicitly support the selected environment Check the pack author’s loader requirements

Do not select a loader because its name appears in a tutorial. Open the download page for each required mod and record the exact Minecraft version, loader, and file name. A 1.20.1 Forge server, a 1.20.1 NeoForge server, and a 1.21.1 NeoForge server are different installations even when the mod is called Create 6.0.

Create 6.0 version details

Current Create 6.0 release information identifies Minecraft 1.20.1 and 1.21.1 as supported targets on Forge and NeoForge. Example file names reported for those targets include Create 6.0.10 for Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge and a latest 1.20.1 build identified as 6.0.8 for Forge and NeoForge. These build numbers can change; use the file page for the exact Minecraft version rather than assuming that the newest numbered Create file is correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Create release names do not encode the Minecraft version consistently. Treat “6.0.x” as the Create release line, not as a Minecraft version. A file must match all three labels: Minecraft version, loader, and Create build.

Check Java, memory, and hosting requirements

Java version

Java requirements follow Minecraft and the selected loader:

  • Minecraft 1.20.5 and later generally requires Java 21.
  • Minecraft 1.17 through 1.20.4 generally uses Java 17.
  • Legacy packs may require Java 8.
  • NeoForge no longer supports Java 17 for Minecraft 1.21 and later.

Guides do not agree on every boundary, so the authoritative instruction for your installation is the Create build or modpack page. Check the Java executable before installing. Run java -version; the major version in the output must satisfy the selected Minecraft and loader combination. Installing a second Java version is often safer than changing the one used by other applications.

Memory

A bare NeoForge server needs about 2 GB of RAM as a starting point. Create adds rendering-related and world-processing work, and each additional mod increases the requirement. The figure is not a guaranteed capacity: world size, player count, chunk loading and the rest of the pack determine the real demand. Leave memory for the operating system instead of assigning every available gigabyte to Java.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

One Fabric setup example starts with a 4 GB minimum heap and a 6 GB maximum heap:

java -Xms4G -Xmx6G -jar fabric-server-launch.jar nogui

Use values appropriate to the machine and the pack. If the host offers only a fixed memory limit, choose a smaller pack or fewer concurrent players rather than forcing Java to exceed that limit.

Choose a host

You can run the server on a home computer, a virtual private server, a dedicated machine, or a panel host. A self-managed machine gives you full control over Java, files and backups. A panel host is simpler when it provides a Versions or Startup menu where you can select the loader and Minecraft version. Confirm that the host allows custom mods and gives you access to the mods directory.

Prepare a self-managed NeoForge or Forge server

The following process applies to a new installation in an empty server directory. Keep the server directory separate from your client’s game directory so that client-only files are not copied accidentally.

  1. Choose the exact target. Write down the Minecraft version, loader and Create file you intend to use. For a new 1.21 installation, that usually means NeoForge; for an older pack, use the loader named by the pack.
  2. Download the installer. Get the NeoForge installer for the exact Minecraft version from neoforged.net. For a Forge pack, obtain the matching Forge installer from the official Forge distribution page. Do not run an installer for a different Minecraft version and hope the mod will adapt.
  3. Open the server directory. Create a new folder and place the installer JAR there. Run it from that folder. For NeoForge, the server-mode command is:
java -jar neoforge-<version>-installer.jar --installServer

The installer creates the server files, generated run scripts and supporting libraries in the current directory. Modern Forge and NeoForge installations normally use those scripts rather than a single all-purpose server JAR. A Forge installer also has a server-install option; follow the installer’s displayed command for the selected Forge version.

  1. Accept the EULA. Start the generated server script once, or inspect the directory for eula.txt. Open that file, change eula=false to eula=true only after reading Mojang’s EULA, save it, and start again.
  2. Set heap options in the intended file. Modern NeoForge and Forge setups generate user_jvm_args.txt. Put heap flags such as -Xms and -Xmx there instead of editing a generated script. This keeps memory settings when the installer regenerates or updates the run scripts.
  3. Create the mod directory. If the installer did not create it, make a folder named exactly mods beside the run script.
  4. Install Create. Download the Create JAR that matches the selected Minecraft version and loader from Modrinth or CurseForge, then place only that JAR in mods. Create 6.0 includes Flywheel on Forge and NeoForge, so a separate Flywheel download is not needed for those current builds. Older Create releases for Forge 1.18.2 and earlier may require Flywheel separately.
  5. Start the server. Run the generated NeoForge or Forge script from the server directory. Keep the console open and wait for the normal “server started” condition before connecting.

What about Registrate?

Registrate appears in Create developer documentation as a dependency used when building against Create. The available release information does not establish that every player must install a separate Registrate JAR. Do not add a random file because a dependency list mentions it; check the exact Create release notes or the error message from your selected build. If the loader reports a missing dependency, use the version and loader named in that error.

Install Create on a Fabric server

Fabric is a separate route, not a conversion layer for Forge mods. Use it only when the Create Fabric port and the rest of the pack support your exact Minecraft version.

  1. Install the Fabric server launcher. Download the launcher for the selected Minecraft and Fabric versions from fabricmc.net, and install it into a clean server directory.
  2. Start once and accept the EULA. Let the launcher generate its files, edit eula.txt to accept the EULA, and stop the server cleanly.
  3. Install Fabric API first. Download Fabric API from Modrinth or CurseForge and put its JAR in mods before adding Create. Fabric API is a required companion for the Fabric Create build.
  4. Add the Fabric Create build. Download the Create port for the same Minecraft version and place it in mods. Do not use the Forge or NeoForge JAR.
  5. Set memory and launch. A guide example uses:
java -Xms4G -Xmx6G -jar fabric-server-launch.jar nogui

Adjust the heap to the machine’s available RAM, then watch the console for dependency, version or Java errors.

Use a panel host

Panel interfaces differ, but the sequence is usually the same:

  1. Open the server’s Versions, Startup or equivalent installation tab.
  2. Select NeoForge, Forge or Fabric, then select the Minecraft version.
  3. Reinstall or apply the selected software when the panel asks for confirmation.
  4. Watch the installation console. Stop and correct the version if the panel installs a different loader than the mods require.
  5. Open the file manager and place Create, plus Fabric API for Fabric, in mods.
  6. Start the server and inspect the console before inviting players.

Some panels provide a Modpacks tab with one-click installations. That option is useful only when the pack explicitly includes the Minecraft version, loader and Create build you want. One-click installation does not remove the need to install matching client files.

Install the matching client files

A modded server does not make an unmodded client compatible. Each player should install:

  • the same Minecraft version as the server;
  • the same loader and loader family;
  • the same Create build;
  • Fabric API when the server uses Fabric; and
  • any additional mods that the server requires on the client.

Download files from Modrinth or CurseForge and verify the loader and Minecraft-version labels on every file. A player using Forge cannot join a NeoForge server simply because both installations contain Create. Likewise, a Fabric client needs the Fabric Create port, not the Forge or NeoForge build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a first launch, install only the loader, Create and required dependencies. Connect once, create or load a test world, and verify that Create items appear and can be used. Add optional content one mod at a time so that the first failing addition is identifiable.

First-start checks and basic operation

Read the console before troubleshooting the client

On the first successful start, the console should progress past dependency discovery and world preparation without a crash. Stop the server with its normal stop command rather than closing the terminal, then make a backup of the complete server directory. Include the world, mods, configuration files, EULA file and JVM argument file in that backup.

Keep a clean test world

Create machines and contraptions can load chunks, move items and generate substantial block updates. A small test world lets you confirm that the installation works before importing an existing save. Once the test works, stop the server, copy the save into the server’s world location according to the loader’s generated configuration, and keep the original untouched as a rollback.

Add performance helpers cautiously

FerriteCore is suggested by one setup guide as an early memory-saving addition, with the benefit becoming more noticeable as the mod list grows. Treat it as optional: confirm that its file supports your exact loader and Minecraft version, add it after the base Create installation works, and remove it if the console reports a compatibility problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot the common failures

Symptom Likely cause Action
“Mod requires a different loader” or a loader mismatch The JAR is for Forge, NeoForge, Fabric or Quilt instead of the server’s loader Remove the incompatible JAR and download the build whose loader label exactly matches the server.
Create is rejected for the Minecraft version The Create file targets another Minecraft release Check the file page and replace it with a build for the server’s exact version; do not infer compatibility from the 6.0 number.
Fabric reports a missing API or crashes during discovery Fabric API is absent, outdated or for another Minecraft version Install Fabric API first and match its Minecraft and loader labels to the server.
Java reports an unsupported class version or the server will not start The Java major version is wrong for the selected Minecraft or NeoForge release Run java -version, install the required Java major version, and configure the host or script to use that executable.
The server starts, then runs out of memory Heap is too small for Create, the world and the rest of the mod list Check the host’s memory limit, increase -Xmx only within available RAM, reduce optional mods or lower the number of simultaneous players.
A player gets a missing-mod or channel error The client’s loader, Create build or dependency set differs from the server Compare the server’s exact JAR names with the client installation and reinstall the matching files.
The server works before an additional mod is added but fails afterward The new mod is incompatible, missing a dependency or built for another loader/version Remove the newest JAR, confirm the base server works, then check that mod’s dependency and version requirements before trying again.

Updating without breaking the world

  1. Stop the server normally and make a complete backup, including the world and configuration folders.
  2. Read the target Create release notes and confirm its Minecraft and loader targets.
  3. Check whether the target Minecraft version requires a different Java major version.
  4. Update the server loader only when every required mod supports it. NeoForge and Forge are not interchangeable upgrade steps after 1.20.1.
  5. Replace the Create JAR with the file for the exact target combination. Do not leave two Create versions in mods.
  6. Update each client to the same combination before connecting.
  7. Start the server from the backup copy first if the world is valuable, and keep the previous installation available until the new one has been tested.

Pre-launch checklist

  • Minecraft version is written down and identical on server and clients.
  • Loader is selected deliberately: NeoForge, Forge, Fabric or a confirmed Quilt setup.
  • Create file’s Minecraft version and loader labels match exactly.
  • Java major version satisfies the selected Minecraft and loader release.
  • RAM allocation leaves capacity for the operating system and other services.
  • Fabric API is installed before the Fabric Create build when using Fabric.
  • No separate Flywheel file is present for a current Create 6.0 Forge or NeoForge installation unless the release documentation explicitly requires one.
  • The EULA is accepted and the generated run script starts without dependency errors.
  • A backup exists before importing a valuable world or adding a large mod list.
  • Players have matching client loader, Create and dependency files.

Frequently asked questions

Is NeoForge required for Create?

No. Create 6.0 has Forge and NeoForge targets for Minecraft 1.20.1 and 1.21.1, while Fabric has a separately maintained port. The correct choice is the loader required by your complete modpack.

Do I need Flywheel with Create 6.0?

Not on current Forge or NeoForge Create 6.0 builds because Flywheel is bundled. Older Create releases, including Forge builds for 1.18.2 and earlier, can have a separate Flywheel requirement.

Can Forge players join a NeoForge server?

Usually not. The client and server need the same loader family and matching mod files. Treat Forge and NeoForge as separate installations unless a specific pack documents cross-compatibility.

Why does the Create file number not match my Minecraft version?

Create’s release number and Minecraft’s version are separate labels. Select the file by its Minecraft and loader metadata, not by the largest Create number.
