For one or a few persistent game servers, start with a self-managed virtual machine (usually an Amazon EC2 instance) or a lower-cost VPS. Choose Amazon GameLift Servers when you operate session-based multiplayer that needs managed fleets, matchmaking-oriented placement, and autoscaling. GameLift Anywhere fits a third case: you already control the hardware but want GameLift session accounting and integration. There is no universally cheapest option; concurrency, region, CPU and RAM needs, bandwidth, DDoS protection, and the amount of administration you will do determine the real cost.
Choose the AWS hosting model before you create anything
AWS offers several ways to run a dedicated server, and they solve different operational problems. Picking the wrong one can leave you paying for orchestration you do not need or maintaining infrastructure that a managed service would have handled.

| Option | Best fit | What you operate | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct Amazon EC2 | One or a few persistent servers; full OS and network control | The instance, operating system, game process, firewall, updates, backups, monitoring and scaling | Maximum flexibility, but all administration is yours |
| Amazon GameLift Servers managed hosting | Session-based multiplayer needing fleet management, placement and autoscaling | Builds, fleet configuration, capacity policy and game-server integration | Less low-level control and a billing model based on managed capacity and usage |
| Amazon GameLift Anywhere | Existing on-premises or colocated hardware with GameLift integration | Your hardware and server process; GameLift handles service-side session functions | You still own hardware operations while paying per session and connection time |
| Custom EC2, ECS or EKS architecture | Large-scale worlds, including MMOs that partition a world across services | The complete orchestration, networking and game architecture | Powerful but substantially more engineering work |
Hosting a persistent server directly on Amazon EC2
EC2 is a virtual machine, not a game-hosting product. You install and supervise the dedicated-server software just as you would on a physical Linux or Windows machine. That gives you control over kernel settings, storage, networking, mods and third-party tools, but AWS will not patch the OS, restart a crashed process, create a usable backup policy or tune capacity unless you configure those systems.
1. Define the workload and region
Write down the game, expected average and peak players, whether the world is persistent, mod requirements, operating system, storage growth and the regions from which players connect. Select an AWS Region close to most players; latency can matter more than a small hourly-price difference. If you need several regions, treat each as a separate capacity and backup decision.

2. Create an instance with least privilege
- In the AWS console, open EC2 and choose Launch instance.
- Select the Linux distribution or Windows Server edition required by the game and its plugins.
- Choose an instance family with enough single-thread CPU performance, RAM and network capacity for the measured player count. Do not size solely by storage.
- Use an SSH key pair for Linux or a securely stored administrator password workflow for Windows. Do not expose remote administration to the whole internet.
- Attach encrypted persistent storage sized for the game, save files, logs, updates and at least one local recovery copy.
- Assign an IAM role only when the server needs AWS APIs, such as writing backups or metrics. Avoid embedding long-lived access keys in scripts.
3. Lock down the security group
A security group is the instance’s stateful network firewall. Add only the UDP and TCP ports documented by the game and its query, voice or administration features. Restrict SSH (port 22) or Remote Desktop (port 3389) to a trusted administrator address or a private access path rather than 0.0.0.0/0. Keep outbound rules as narrow as the game and update process permit, and document every rule so it can be removed when a mod is retired.
4. Install and isolate the server process
Connect through the approved administration path, update the operating system, create a non-root service account, and install the dedicated-server files in a separate directory. A typical Linux preparation looks like this:
Recommended Free Tools
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y
sudo adduser --system --home /srv/game --group gameserver
sudo mkdir -p /srv/game
sudo chown -R gameserver:gameserver /srv/game
Replace the package commands and paths with those supported by your distribution and game. Run the process as the service account, keep configuration and save data outside temporary directories, and use a supervisor such as systemd so the process starts after a reboot and restarts after a crash. Store secrets in protected files or a secrets service, not in a public repository or command history.
5. Make saves and updates safe
Use the game’s console or shutdown mechanism for a clean save before applying an update. Schedule updates during a published maintenance window, keep a rollback copy of the previous server build, and test mods on a staging instance when the game supports that arrangement. A version mismatch between server, client and mods is a common cause of failed joins; record the exact build and mod set for every change.
6. Add backups, monitoring and alerts
- Backups: copy world data and configuration to separate storage on a schedule, retain multiple generations, and perform a test restore. A snapshot that has never been restored is not a verified backup.
- Monitoring: watch CPU, memory, disk fullness, network throughput, process health and instance reachability. Game-level metrics such as tick time or simulation delay reveal overload earlier than CPU percentage alone.
- Alerts: notify an operator when the process exits, storage crosses a threshold, backups fail or latency rises. Define who responds and how the server is placed in maintenance mode.
- Logs: rotate logs and preserve enough history to diagnose crashes without allowing them to consume the game volume.
7. Automate routine capacity changes
For a small persistent world, an automated schedule can stop the instance during periods when nobody plays, but stopping loses in-memory state and can interrupt players. For multiple servers, use an image or configuration-management process to recreate a known-good instance rather than making undocumented manual changes. Autoscaling is useful only when the game can move players or sessions safely; a single persistent world cannot be duplicated without game-level support.

When Amazon GameLift Servers is the better AWS choice
GameLift managed hosting is designed for fleets of game-server processes that host discrete sessions. AWS provisions and manages fleets built from EC2 instances or managed containers, while your integration requests a server placement and receives connection details. You select a Region, instance family and size, operating system and capacity strategy, including On-Demand or Spot where supported.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
GameLift can remove much of the instance patching, process supervision, fleet health and placement work required by raw EC2. It does not remove the need to build a compatible server, integrate the client and backend, choose sensible capacity limits or monitor the player experience. Validate your game’s session lifecycle and deployment model before committing to a fleet design.
Managed-fleet cost drivers
- Region and the selected instance family and size.
- Operating-system licensing where applicable.
- On-Demand versus Spot capacity and the interruption tolerance of your sessions.
- How many instances are running at minimum, target and peak capacity.
- Session duration, placement efficiency and unused headroom.
AWS states that network bandwidth in and out is free for eligible generation-6-and-later GameLift instance types, including On-Demand and Spot, with no commitment required. Confirm eligibility for the exact instance and Region in the current AWS pricing documentation before modeling your bill.
When GameLift is not the right abstraction
A persistent sandbox or survival world that runs continuously may not map cleanly to short-lived sessions. For a very large MMO that partitions one world across thousands of players, AWS says custom solutions on EC2, ECS or EKS are typically better than GameLift. That architecture gives your team responsibility for partition ownership, cross-service state, routing, deployments and failure recovery.
Using GameLift Anywhere with hardware you control
GameLift Anywhere registers server processes running on hardware you supply, such as an on-premises machine or colocated server. You retain responsibility for the operating system, hardware capacity, connectivity, patching and physical or provider-level failures while using GameLift features for session placement and accounting.

The published 12-month free tier allows 3,000 placed sessions and 500,000 server-process connection minutes per month. The example rates are $0.0012 per placed game session and $0.000011 per server-process connection minute. These allowances and rates are usage terms, not a promise that your complete hardware, transit or colocation bill will be free; check the current service terms and calculate both the GameLift and infrastructure portions.
What AWS can cost at scale
AWS publishes an illustrative competitive-shooter scenario rather than a universal quote. It models 50,000 peak concurrent users, 10 players per session, eight sessions per instance and c6a.4xlarge On-Demand capacity. The modeled monthly total is $111,566.81. A stated Spot mix lowers that example to $88,124 per month, described by AWS as a 21% saving. The figures depend on the scenario’s concurrency, session layout, instance type, Region, operating system, utilization and Spot assumptions; they should not be extrapolated to a different game.
For your own estimate, calculate at least average and peak capacity separately. Include idle minimum fleet size, storage, snapshots, data transfer that is not covered by a service-specific allowance, logs, monitoring, build pipelines, support and engineering time. Compare the resulting monthly total with the cost of a VPS and with the value of the operational work you would otherwise perform yourself.
Cheaper alternatives to AWS game hosting
DigitalOcean Droplets
Droplets are Linux virtual machines with published hourly and monthly plans. They can be a straightforward choice for a small persistent community server when you are comfortable administering Linux. Compare the plan’s CPU behavior, RAM, disk, backup pricing, firewall, monitoring, transfer allowance, Region and available DDoS controls rather than selecting by advertised monthly price alone. You still install the game, apply patches, supervise the process and test restores.
OVHcloud VPS or dedicated servers
OVHcloud presents price/performance as a central game-server decision and offers both VPS allocations and dedicated hardware. A VPS isolates your allocation from other accounts, while a dedicated server gives you the full machine and its maintenance obligations. Check the current plan’s CPU generation, memory, storage, transfer policy, Region, support scope and gaming-specific protection; these details and prices change over time.

Managed game-server hosts
Managed providers can offer one-click installation, control panels, support and bundled DDoS handling for supported games. Examples in the market include Shockbyte, ScalaCube and PingPerfect. Their hardware ceilings, locations, backup policies, trial terms, mod support and bandwidth definitions differ. The convenience premium can be worthwhile for a volunteer administrator, but confirm whether you can download a complete backup, move to another provider, install the mods you need and obtain help during an outage.
How to compare the total cost, not just the server sticker price
| Comparison | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Capacity | What are average and peak concurrent players, sessions per instance and required headroom? |
| CPU | Does the game depend on high single-thread performance, and is CPU contention possible on a shared VPS? |
| Memory and storage | How much RAM do the server, mods and operating system consume? How fast will saves, logs and backups grow? |
| Latency and location | Which Regions put most players within an acceptable round-trip time? |
| Bandwidth | Is transfer metered, capped or included? Are ingress, egress and game-service allowances treated differently? |
| Resilience | What DDoS protection, backup retention, restore process and replacement time are included? |
| Operations | Who patches the OS, responds to crashes, rotates credentials and handles incidents? |
| Scaling | Can capacity grow without moving a persistent world, and can Spot interruptions be tolerated? |
| Compatibility | Are the operating system, mods, plugins, console access and game updates supported? |
Common failure modes and fixes
Players cannot connect
Verify the server process is listening on the expected interface and port, then check the EC2 security group, the operating-system firewall and any provider firewall. Confirm that the advertised public address belongs to the current instance and that DNS has not cached an old address. Test from a network outside the server’s own subnet.
The server is reachable but lags
Inspect simulation or tick-time metrics, CPU single-core saturation, memory pressure, disk latency and packet loss. Reduce expensive mods or entity counts, move to a CPU-stronger instance, or place players closer to the chosen Region. Adding RAM will not fix a main-thread CPU bottleneck.
A restart loses the world
Check that save data is on persistent storage, the service account can write it, and shutdowns use the game’s clean-save command. Restore a copy to a separate test instance to prove that backups contain usable world data.
Updates break clients or mods
Pin the server build and mod versions, announce a maintenance window, keep the previous build available, and roll back if the client population cannot connect. Do not overwrite the only known-good installation during an update.

Spot capacity interrupts a live session
Use Spot only when the game can drain or replace a process safely. Keep critical baseline capacity On-Demand, configure interruption handling, and test player reconnection before increasing the Spot share.

A practical decision guide
- Choose direct EC2 when you run one or a few servers, have Linux or Windows administration skills and need control over the OS, files, networking or mods.
- Choose GameLift managed fleets when your multiplayer game uses discrete sessions and benefits from managed placement, fleet health and autoscaling.
- Choose GameLift Anywhere when you already control suitable hardware and want GameLift session integration without moving the server process to AWS-managed capacity.
- Choose a VPS when a modest persistent community server needs a predictable bill and simple deployment more than hyperscale orchestration.
- Choose a managed game host when one-click setup, provider support and bundled protection justify less infrastructure control and a markup.
Recalculate the choice whenever player geography, concurrency, game updates or reliability requirements change. A low hourly rate can become expensive when it requires more administration, while a managed service can be economical when it prevents incidents your team cannot staff.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run a Minecraft, Rust or Valheim server on AWS?
Yes. A dedicated server can run on a suitably sized EC2 Linux or Windows instance, provided the game’s operating system, CPU, RAM, storage and network requirements are met. You must install the server software, open its documented ports and operate updates, saves, backups and monitoring.
Is Amazon GameLift always cheaper than EC2?
No. GameLift adds managed fleet and session capabilities, while EC2 provides a virtual machine that you operate. The cheaper choice depends on utilization, session pattern, instance selection, Region, Spot tolerance and the value of the administration work you avoid.

There is no provider that is cheapest for every game. Compare CPU performance, RAM, storage, transfer, Region, backups, DDoS protection and support at your actual average and peak player counts; a low listed price can be offset by weak CPU performance or paid essentials.
Should a persistent world use GameLift managed hosting?
Only if its architecture fits GameLift’s session and fleet model. A continuously running world may be simpler on EC2 or a VPS, while a large partitioned MMO may need a custom EC2, ECS or EKS design.
