To host a Minecraft server for friends in 2026, first match the group’s edition and game version, then choose between running the official Java or Bedrock server software yourself, using Minecraft Realms, or playing over a local network. The official server downloads are free, but self-hosting still requires a suitable computer, a reliable connection, configuration work and ongoing administration.
Java and Bedrock use different server packages and are not interchangeable. Java players join Java-hosted games; Bedrock players need a Bedrock-hosted game. Follow the edition-specific instructions below, test locally before opening outside access, and keep a private server address private.

1. Confirm the edition before downloading anything
Ask every player which edition they use and which device they play on. Minecraft Java Edition and Minecraft Bedrock Edition use separate server software and multiplayer services. A Java client cannot simply join a Bedrock server, and a Bedrock client cannot join a Java server unless a separate compatibility solution is involved; that type of cross-play setup is outside the official paths covered here.

|---|---|
| Edition | Everyone is using Java Edition or everyone is using Bedrock Edition for the hosted world. |
| Game version | Clients and the server are on compatible versions. A version mismatch can block a connection even when the edition is correct. |
| Platforms | List the computers, consoles and mobile devices in the group. Console players may need their platform’s multiplayer subscription. |
| Player location | People on the same home network can use LAN play; people elsewhere need an internet-reachable host or an official hosted service. |
Do this check before downloading a server. It prevents the common mistake of installing Java software for a Bedrock group, or configuring a Bedrock server when the players own Java Edition.

2. Choose a hosting route
There is no single best method. The right choice depends on whether you value control, simplicity, cost predictability or the ability to avoid router configuration.
| Route | Best for | What you provide or manage | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-host at home | A technically comfortable host who can leave a computer running | Server software, computer, storage, internet connection, firewall and possibly router settings | You are responsible for updates, access control, backups and troubleshooting. Java hardware sizing is not specified by the cited official pages. |
| Minecraft Realms | A small private group that wants a managed world | A current Realms subscription and the correct edition plan | It is a private convenience service rather than a general-purpose large server. Minecraft’s cited Java description says up to 10 players and automatic backups; check current plan terms and pricing. |
| Third-party game hosting | Players who want managed infrastructure or features beyond a basic home server | A provider account and a plan whose edition, location, storage, backups and player limits fit the group | Performance, support, mod policy and prices vary. Verify every provider claim directly before paying. |
| LAN play | Players physically connected to the same local network | A world opened to LAN or a local server | It normally does not make the world available to friends on another network. |
Self-hosting at home
Home hosting gives you the most direct control over the world files and settings. It is a good fit when one player can keep the host computer powered on during play and is willing to handle a Java runtime or Bedrock executable, configuration files, firewall prompts and backups. The official Java guidance warns that changing home-network settings can be involved, so this route is not entirely plug-and-play.
Realms
Realms is Minecraft’s official subscription hosting option. The cited Minecraft Help description presents a personal online server with automatic backups and up to 10 players at a time. It removes much of the computer and router administration required by self-hosting, but you still need to select the correct Java or Bedrock offering and keep clients compatible. Current plan names, player allowances and prices can change, so check the live Realms page when subscribing.
LAN play
LAN is the simplest option for a household, dormitory or event where everyone is on the same local network. In the game, open the world to LAN or start the local server according to the edition’s interface. Friends on the same network should see it or be able to enter the local address. Because the world is not being published to the wider internet, this route avoids the public-IP and port-forwarding steps used for remote friends.

3. Prepare the host computer and network
Before installing server software, make a short checklist:
- Confirm the edition, client versions and expected number of players.
- Choose a computer that can remain available while people play. The official Bedrock page publishes minimum requirements; those figures should not be treated as a Java recommendation or a guarantee for a large world.
- Create a dedicated folder for the server and its world files rather than scattering files through Downloads.
- Use a stable network connection. A wired connection can make the host less dependent on wireless signal quality.
- Decide whether players are local only or whether trusted friends must connect from outside the home.
- Plan where world backups will be stored before anyone builds something important.
- Have the current official download page available because supported versions and packages can change.
The official server software itself is free to download for both Java and Bedrock. Free software does not cover the cost of a computer, electricity, storage, internet service or a paid hosting subscription.
4. Set up a Java Edition server
Use this path when the group plays Java Edition. Download the Java server package from Minecraft’s official server-download page, not an unrelated installer. The download is a server JAR file.
- Install a compatible Java runtime. The server JAR needs a Java runtime that supports the server version you downloaded. If the launcher starts but the server window immediately closes, verify that Java is installed and that the command line can find it.
- Create a server folder. Put the downloaded JAR in a simple folder such as
MinecraftServer. Avoid moving the JAR while it is running because its generated world and configuration files are created beside it. - Run the JAR once. Open a terminal or command prompt in that folder and run
java -jar server.jar nogui, replacingserver.jarwith the actual filename. The first launch creates files such as the world folder andeula.txt. If the filename contains spaces, use the exact filename in your command or rename it to a simple name. - Review the EULA. Open
eula.txt, read the linked license terms and change the setting toeula=trueonly if you agree. The server will not complete startup while the agreement remains false. - Start the server again. Run the same command. Wait for the console to report that the server is ready before attempting to connect. Keep the console open while the world is active.
- Adjust server properties. Use
server.propertiesto set the world name, game mode, difficulty, maximum players, message of the day and other available options. Change one setting at a time and restart when the server requires it. - Limit access. Enable the whitelist when the world is private, then add player names from the server console with commands such as
whitelist add PlayerName. Grant operator privileges only to people who genuinely need administrative commands. - Test on the host computer. Connect with the Java client using the local address shown by your operating system, or use
localhostwhen connecting from the same machine. A successful local connection proves that the server and Java runtime are working before network troubleshooting begins. - Test from another device on the same network. Use the host computer’s local network address. If this fails, inspect the operating system firewall and confirm that the server is listening on the expected port.
Java connection addresses and port 25565
The Java guide uses port 25565 in its example connection address. If you leave the server on that port, remote players normally enter the host’s public address; if you change the port, the address includes the new port, for example address:port. The exact address depends on your router, firewall and internet service.

Do not publish a home public IP in a public server list or social post. Minecraft’s Java guidance explicitly warns that exposing it publicly creates a security risk to the home network and recommends sharing it only with people you trust. A private whitelist is useful, but it does not make careless public disclosure safe.
5. Set up a Bedrock Dedicated Server
Choose this route when the group uses Bedrock Edition and needs a persistent server rather than a single-player world opened temporarily. Download the Bedrock Dedicated Server package from Minecraft, extract it into its own folder and run the executable supplied for the host operating system.
Published Bedrock requirements
Minecraft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server page lists the following requirements. They are the page’s published baseline, not a promise that every world size, simulation distance or player load will perform well at the minimum:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Category | Published requirement |
|---|---|
| Windows | Windows 10 version 10.0.15063 or later, or Windows Server 2016 or later |
| Linux | Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later |
| Processor | Intel Core i3-3210 or AMD A8-7600 APU equivalent |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM |
| Available storage | 180 MB to 1 GB |
| Network | Broadband connection |
These figures apply to the Bedrock page that publishes them. Do not use them as a Java Edition specification, and do not assume that the smallest listed storage figure leaves room for a growing world, backups or logs.

Bedrock installation steps
- Download the current package. Select the Bedrock Dedicated Server archive for the supported Windows or Linux environment you plan to use.
- Extract the archive. Keep the executable, configuration files and generated world data together in a dedicated folder. Do not run it directly from a temporary archive viewer.
- Launch the supplied executable. On Windows this is the package’s Windows executable; on Linux, run the Linux server binary from a terminal. If the operating system blocks execution, check file permissions and the system’s security prompt rather than downloading a replacement binary.
- Read the generated files. The first launch creates or updates configuration and world files. Use the settings provided by the package to select the world, game mode, difficulty, player limit and access rules.
- Allow the program through the firewall when prompted. Permit only the network profiles and ports required for your intended use. A blanket rule for every network is unnecessary for a private server.
- Connect locally first. Join from a Bedrock client on the same computer or network. Resolve local launch or configuration errors before attempting internet access.
- Enable remote access only after local testing. Configure the router and firewall for the port used by the current Bedrock package, then have one trusted friend test from outside the home.
Because Bedrock package details can change, use the configuration files and notes included with the current download rather than copying settings from an old tutorial.
6. Make the server reachable outside your home
Remote friends need a path from the internet to the host. Minecraft’s setup guidance notes that network and firewall configuration may be necessary. The exact steps differ by router, operating system, internet provider and edition, so treat a generic port-forwarding recipe as a checklist rather than a guarantee.
- Give the host a stable local address. Use a DHCP reservation in the router or a carefully configured local address so a reboot does not send the forwarding rule to another device.
- Allow the server through the host firewall. Create the narrowest rule that covers the server program and intended network. Confirm that the rule applies to the active network profile.
- Forward only the required server port. Java’s official example uses port 25565. Bedrock uses the port specified by its current package and configuration. Do not forward unrelated services.
- Test from outside the home. Have a trusted friend connect using the current public address and port, or test through a separate mobile connection. Testing from inside the same network can give misleading results because some routers do not support loopback.
- Remove the exposure when finished. If the server is temporary, disable the forwarding rule and firewall exception when the session ends.
Some internet services place customers behind carrier-grade NAT, which can prevent normal inbound forwarding. If the router has no usable public address or outside tests never reach the host despite correct local settings, ask the internet provider whether inbound connections are supported. Do not publish the home address while investigating.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches7. Operate the world safely
Backups
For a self-hosted world, you are responsible for preserving the data. Stop the server cleanly before copying the world folder, or follow the current software’s documented save procedure so files are not copied mid-write. Keep at least one backup separate from the host computer and periodically test that a copy can be restored. The cited Realms description includes automatic backups; do not assume that protection exists on a self-hosted installation.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Updates
Read the current release notes before updating. Back up the world, stop the server, replace or update the server software as directed, then test with a copy of the world if practical. Every player must move to a compatible client version; updating only the host can strand players on older clients.
Permissions
Use a whitelist for a private group, keep operator privileges scarce and remove players who no longer need access. Never paste administrative commands from an unknown source into the console without understanding what they change.
Availability
A home server is available only while the host computer, server process, power and internet connection are available. Configure the computer not to sleep during sessions, but keep normal operating-system updates and physical ventilation in mind. If the host cannot stay online, Realms or managed hosting may be a better fit. Godlike.Host hosts Minecraft Java, Bedrock and modded servers in a Pterodactyl-based panel with up to three free backups a day, and it offers a free 2 GB Minecraft server (20 slots) for trying the panel; that server must be extended every 3 hours, has limited panel features and one location. In our 13 Oct 2026 test, a Paper Java server on a 16 GB plan in Amsterdam reached “Done” on first start in 6.25 s.
8. Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The server window closes immediately | Missing or incompatible Java runtime, incorrect command or an unaccepted EULA | Run the command in a terminal so the error remains visible, confirm the Java version required by the server, check the JAR filename and review eula.txt. |
| Players see an incompatible-version message | Client and server versions differ | Record the exact server version and have every player use a compatible client before changing network settings. |
| The host can join but a friend cannot | Firewall, forwarding, public-address or ISP issue | Test another device on the same LAN, verify the local address and firewall, then test the forwarded port from outside. Check for carrier-grade NAT. |
| Friends on the same network cannot see the world | LAN discovery or local firewall problem | Confirm everyone is on the same network, use the host’s local address, allow the game or server through the local firewall and avoid guest-network isolation. |
| Players connect but experience lag | Host workload, connection capacity, wireless instability or too many simultaneous players | Reduce demanding world settings, close competing applications, use a stable connection and compare performance with fewer players. The Bedrock minimum figures are not a performance guarantee. |
| The world reverts or disappears after a failure | No recent usable backup or a copy made while files were being written | Stop the server cleanly before backups and maintain more than one dated copy on separate storage. |
9. Understand the cost
| Route | Known cost position | Costs that may still apply |
|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted Java or Bedrock | Official server software is free to download. | Computer or upgrades, electricity, storage, internet service and your time for maintenance. |
| Realms | Subscription service; current price and plan terms must be checked on Minecraft. | The recurring subscription and any platform-specific multiplayer requirement. |
| Third-party host | Provider and plan dependent; no universal price or performance claim applies. | Monthly hosting, extra storage, backups, mod support and higher player limits. |
| LAN | No separate server subscription is required for a local session. | The existing devices, network and any platform multiplayer requirement. |
10. Pick the simplest route that meets the group’s needs
- Choose LAN when everyone is in the same place and the world does not need to remain available online.
- Choose Realms when a small private group wants an official managed world, automatic backups as described by Minecraft Help and minimal server administration.
- Self-host Java when every player uses Java Edition and the host wants control over files and settings, accepts Java-runtime and network work and can keep a computer online.
- Self-host Bedrock when every player uses Bedrock Edition and the host meets the published Windows or Linux requirements, while understanding that minimum hardware is not a workload guarantee.
- Consider managed third-party hosting only after verifying edition support, compatible versions, player limits, backup restoration, mod or add-on policy, server location, support response and current price.
11. A safe first-session checklist
- Write down each player’s edition, platform and game version.
- Select LAN, Realms or self-hosting before downloading software.
- Download the official Java JAR or Bedrock package for the matching edition.
- Complete one local connection test.
- Set a whitelist and grant only necessary operator access.
- Create and verify a world backup before inviting the full group.
- If remote access is required, configure the firewall and the minimum router forwarding rule, then test with one trusted friend.
- Share connection details privately, never in a public post containing your home public IP.
- Record the server version and update procedure so the next maintenance session is repeatable.
Following that order separates edition problems from software problems, and software problems from network problems. It also lets you enjoy a private world without exposing a home network unnecessarily.
