To host it successfully, use the matching CurseForge server files—version 3.6.0 is the latest release listed (February 25, 2019)—run the supplied Forge server, and allocate enough memory for the number of players and machines in your world. A small private server should start with roughly 4–5 GB allocated to Java; a public or heavily populated server generally needs 6–8 GB. The pack’s official Java requirement is not established in the available installation information, so verify it in the pack’s own notes before choosing a runtime.

Confirm that you have the right “Skyblock 3”
Several unrelated projects use “Skyblock” in their names. This guide covers Modern Skyblock 3: Departed, the Forge-based Minecraft 1.12.2 pack listed on CurseForge. Its listing reports more than 2 million downloads, but the download count is not a server requirement or a guarantee of current support.

Pick a pack release and matching server files
The server and every client must use the same Modern Skyblock 3 release. The CurseForge files listing identifies Modern Skyblock-3.6.0, released February 25, 2019, as the latest release listed for the pack. An older 3.0.0.5 server archive for Minecraft 1.12.2 is also available; that archive is 311 MB and was uploaded January 31, 2018.

| Pack release | Relationship to the current listing | Server-file detail | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.6.0 | Latest release listed by CurseForge (February 25, 2019) | Use the corresponding 1.12.2 server files | New installations unless a group deliberately needs another version |
| 3.0.0.5 | Older release | 311 MB server archive, uploaded January 31, 2018 | Only when an existing world or mod configuration depends on this exact release |
Download the server archive from the pack’s CurseForge Files page rather than assembling mods from individual downloads. A manually assembled set can differ in mod versions, configuration files or scripts even when the pack appears to launch.
How much RAM does a Modern Skyblock 3 server need?
Published recommendations vary considerably. The difference comes from player count, loaded chunks, automation and entity counts, not from a single universal minimum. The following figures preserve the conditions stated by each publisher:
| Source | Published figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| CurseForge listing | At least 6–8 GB | Shown in the listing summary; the year and additional test conditions were not stated |
| BisectHosting | 4 GB | Recommended to run smoothly; date and player-load conditions were not stated |
| StickyPiston | 4 GB minimum tested; 5 GB recommended | 5 GB recommendation is for hosting friends or a public server; date was not stated |
| Minecraft-Hosting.pro | 3 GB minimum | Actual need depends on entity count and player count; date was not stated |
| ScaleCube | 8 GB minimum recommended | Date and workload conditions were not stated |
For practical planning, allocate 4–5 GB to Java for a small private world and start at 6–8 GB for a public server or a group running substantial automation. These are starting allocations, not performance guarantees. Leave additional physical memory for the operating system, file cache and any monitoring or backup process. Increasing the Java heap cannot compensate for a slow CPU, a saturated disk or a world with too many active machines.
Self-hosting or managed hosting?
You can run the server on a computer you control or rent a managed Minecraft instance. Both approaches use the same pack files; the difference is who operates the machine and network.
| Consideration | Self-hosted machine | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | No separate game-server subscription, but you provide hardware, electricity and an internet connection. | Recurring hosting charge; the provider supplies the server hardware and data-center connection. |
| Setup effort | You install Java and Forge, configure the firewall and router, and maintain backups and updates. | Often includes a control panel, automated installation and support, reducing manual setup. |
| Control | Full control over Java, launch flags, files, mods, scripts and operating-system access. | Control depends on the plan; some panels restrict Java versions, custom jars or file access. |
| Availability | The server is reachable only while your machine and connection are online. Residential upload limits and changing IP addresses can matter. | Designed for continuous availability, with data-center networking and optional scheduled backups depending on the plan. |
| Scaling | You can add RAM or move to a faster machine, but you must perform the migration. | You can usually change RAM tiers from the panel, subject to the provider’s inventory and plan limits. |
ServerMiner lists Modern Skyblock 3: Departed hosting using pack version 3.6.0. StickyPiston, BisectHosting and ScaleCube also list the pack. Confirm the offered pack version, available RAM, Java controls, backup policy and whether custom server files are permitted before ordering; a one-click listing does not remove the need for version matching.
Prepare the host before installing
Use a dedicated server directory
Create a new directory such as modern-skyblock-3-server on a disk with several gigabytes of free space. Keep the server outside a synchronized cloud folder: synchronization conflicts can lock region files while Minecraft is writing them. Use an account with permission to create files, but avoid running the process as an operating-system administrator unless your platform requires it.

Install a compatible Java runtime
The available pack information does not name an official Java version. Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge installations commonly depend on an older Java runtime, but treating Java 8 as an official Modern Skyblock 3 requirement would be unverified. Read the current pack description, server archive notes and the Forge installer’s messages, then select the runtime those instructions specify. Check the executable that will actually launch the server with:
java -version
If multiple Java versions are installed, use the full path to the intended executable in the launch script. A server can appear to have Java installed while the script still resolves a different version from the system path.
Plan networking
- For a LAN-only game, players can connect using the host computer’s private address.
- For internet players, allow the Minecraft server port (normally TCP 25565) through the operating-system firewall and forward that port from the router to the server’s private address.
- Assign the server a stable local address, or create a DHCP reservation, so a router rule does not break after a reboot.
- Do not publish the server’s administrative console or remote shell to the internet. Use a VPN or a provider’s secured panel for administration.
Install the Forge server from the pack files
- Choose one release. Download the Modern Skyblock 3 server archive matching the client release you intend to use. For a new installation, that is normally 3.6.0.
- Extract the archive. Unpack it directly into the dedicated server directory. Preserve the included
mods, config, scripts and libraries; do not merge them with another modpack. - Run the supplied Forge file. CurseForge’s listing says the server is created by running the
forge.jarsupplied with the server files. From a terminal opened in the server directory, run:
java -jar forge.jar nogui
If your archive contains a Forge installer rather than a ready-to-run forge.jar, run the installer’s server mode instead:
java -jar forge-installer.jar --installServer
The exact filename can differ. Use the filename present in your chosen archive; do not rename a Forge jar merely to match an example command. The installer creates the libraries and launch files required by the 1.12.2 server.
- Check the generated files. You should see a Forge server jar or launch script, a
librariesdirectory and the pack’smodsandconfigdirectories. If Forge reports missing libraries, rerun the installer with a working internet connection and write permission to the directory. - Start it once. Launch the server without changing gameplay settings. The first run may take longer while Forge builds caches and creates the world directory.
- Accept the EULA. Stop the process when it reports that the Minecraft EULA must be accepted. Open
eula.txt, change onlyeula=falsetoeula=trueafter reading the agreement, save the file and start the server again. - Wait for the ready message. Do not connect while Forge is still loading mods. The console should finish startup and provide a prompt accepting commands.
Create a reliable launch script
A script prevents accidental low-memory launches and makes restarts repeatable. Adjust the heap values to the allocation selected in the RAM section, and replace the jar name if your archive uses another one.

Linux or macOS
#!/usr/bin/env bash
cd "$(dirname "$0")"
exec java -Xms4G -Xmx5G -jar forge.jar nogui
Save it as start.sh, then make it executable with chmod +x start.sh. Keep -Xms at or below -Xmx; the maximum heap is the value that counts against the host’s available memory.
Windows
@echo off
cd /d "%~dp0"
java -Xms4G -Xmx5G -jar forge.jar nogui
pause
Save it as start.bat. The final pause keeps the window open so you can read an error after an unexpected exit. On a managed host, enter equivalent memory and jar settings in the provider’s startup panel instead of uploading a local script if the panel controls those values.
Make the first world safe to operate
Set the basic server properties
After the first successful boot, stop the server by entering stop in the console. Edit server.properties while the server is offline. Set a clear motd, choose a non-conflicting server-port if you are running multiple servers, and decide whether the server should use a whitelist. Skyblock worlds are usually cooperative, so a whitelist is a useful first line of access control.
Do not edit configuration files while the server is running. Forge mods may rewrite them during shutdown, and simultaneous edits can be lost.
Grant administration carefully
Start the server and use the console to grant operator access with op PlayerName. Use operator privileges only for trusted administrators. For ordinary players, prefer mod-specific permissions or commands that do not grant unrestricted server control. Remove access with deop PlayerName when a moderator no longer needs it.

Back up before inviting players
- Stop the server cleanly before copying the world,
config,modsandserver.propertiesdirectories. - Keep at least one backup away from the server machine. A second disk in the same computer does not protect against theft, disk failure or ransomware.
- Use dated backup folders so you can identify the last known-good state after a bad mod change.
- Test a restore on a separate directory. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
Connect the client and verify the installation
Every player should install the same Modern Skyblock 3 release, Minecraft 1.12.2 and the matching Forge loader. On the local network, connect to the host’s private address. From the internet, connect to the public address and forwarded port. A player should not copy only the server’s mods folder into an unrelated instance and expect it to work; the pack’s configurations and loader version matter as well.
Test with one player before opening the server to a group. Join the world, create a small island, place a few early machines and reconnect. This catches missing dependencies, incorrect permissions and firewall mistakes before several players generate chunks simultaneously.

Tune performance without hiding errors
Watch the right signals
Memory usage alone does not explain every slowdown. Watch the server console for repeated mod errors, observe CPU utilization and check disk space. A world that runs out of heap may log an out-of-memory error, while a server with adequate heap can still fall behind if one or more loaded chunks perform expensive automation.
Control loaded activity
- Ask players to avoid leaving large numbers of farms and machine networks permanently loaded when nobody is using them.
- Spread bases and automation thoughtfully; many active chunks increase both tick work and memory pressure.
- Remove abandoned item drops and entities through normal in-game or mod-supported tools rather than deleting world files by hand.
- Change one performance setting at a time, record the old value and test after a restart.
Do not copy optimization settings from a different Minecraft version or modpack without checking what the 1.12.2 mods expect. Aggressive entity limits or view-distance changes can alter gameplay and may mask a configuration error rather than solve it.

The server exits immediately
Read the first error in the console, not only the final “server stopped” line. Confirm that the launch script points to the intended Java executable, that the Forge jar belongs to Minecraft 1.12.2 and that the directory is writable. If the error names a missing library, rerun the Forge installation step with internet access.

Players see a mod-list or registry mismatch
This means the client and server do not have identical pack content. Compare the release number first, then replace the client instance with a fresh installation of that release. Do not “fix” the problem by removing a mod from only one side; many Forge mods must be present on both client and server, while a few are server-only.
Java reports an unsupported class version
The selected runtime is incompatible with one of the jars. Recheck the pack’s current notes and the Forge 1.12.2 requirements, then point the launch script explicitly at the supported Java executable. Changing the heap flags cannot resolve a class-version error.
The server reports out-of-memory errors
Stop the server, confirm that the host has enough physical memory left after the Java heap and operating system are accounted for, and then adjust the allocation within the private or public-server guidance above. Also inspect loaded chunks, entities and automation; simply assigning a larger heap can postpone, rather than remove, the underlying load.
Internet players cannot connect
First connect locally. If local access works, verify the server is listening on the expected port, the operating-system firewall allows it, the router forwards TCP traffic to the correct private address and the public address has not changed. Some internet providers use carrier-grade NAT, which prevents inbound forwarding; a managed host or a VPN-based network may be required in that situation.
The world behaves incorrectly after an update
Stop immediately and restore the last backup if blocks, machines or registries are missing. Never downgrade a world by repeatedly launching it with older mod files. Test the new pack release on a copy of the world first, and keep the original archive untouched until the copy has been verified.

Updating Modern Skyblock 3 safely
- Record the current pack release, Forge build, Java executable and launch settings.
- Stop the server cleanly and create a complete backup, including the world,
mods, config, scripts and properties files. - Install the target release in a separate test directory. Do not overwrite the working server yet.
- Start the test copy and review the console for missing mods, migrations or registry warnings.
- Join with a matching client and inspect the spawn area, player inventories, quests, machines and dimensions.
- Schedule a maintenance window, replace the production files, and retain the previous directory for rollback.
- Tell players the exact release and client steps before the server reopens.
Because the latest listed release dates from 2019, do not assume that a newer Minecraft or Forge version is compatible simply because it is available. Treat 3.6.0 and its associated 1.12.2 files as a pinned environment unless the pack maintainers document a supported migration.
A practical launch checklist
- Correct pack: Modern Skyblock 3: Departed, not another Skyblock project.
- One pinned release, normally 3.6.0 for a new server.
- Minecraft 1.12.2 and the matching Forge server files.
- Java version verified against the pack’s own notes rather than assumed.
- Enough physical memory for the selected Java allocation and the operating system.
- Server archive extracted without mixing files from another modpack.
- Forge installed or the supplied
forge.jarlaunched successfully. eula=trueset only after reading the EULA.- Firewall and router configured for the chosen port, if internet access is required.
- Whitelist, operator accounts and backups configured before public access.
- One-player connection test completed with an identical client pack.
Bottom line for choosing your setup
For a private group, a self-hosted machine with 4–5 GB allocated to Java is a sensible starting point when you are comfortable managing Forge, networking and backups. Choose a managed instance when uptime, a control panel or simpler networking matters more than operating-system control; verify that it offers Modern Skyblock 3 version 3.6.0, the RAM tier you need and the Java settings the pack accepts. In either case, success depends on using the exact 1.12.2 Forge files for one pinned pack release and keeping a tested backup before changing mods or worlds.
