Run whitelist enable in the Hytale server console to restrict connections to approved players. Add people with the whitelist-management commands, confirm the state with whitelist status, and use a host’s control-panel toggle when your provider supplies one. For a large list or an external provisioning process, edit whitelist.json only after stopping the server and making a backup.

What a Hytale whitelist does
A whitelist changes a server from open access to an allow-list model: only identities recorded in the server’s whitelist may connect. It is useful for a private survival world, a community server that is not ready for a public launch, or a test instance where you need to control who can join.

Whitelisting is an access control, not a moderation system. It does not replace operator permissions, bans, backups, password hygiene, or server updates. A player who is allowed onto the server can still need separate in-game permissions, and a player removed from the list may still appear in an existing session until that connection ends.
The command names documented by current third-party Hytale guides are enable, disable, add, remove, list, status, and clear under the whitelist command. You can review the reported syntax at HytaleCommands’ whitelist reference and the broader command index at hytale.game’s command list. No official Hypixel Studios command manual was identified for this feature, so syntax and labels should be checked against the Hytale version and hosting panel you are actually running.

Choose where to manage the list

For a normal server with a handful of players, use the console or an operator command. Treat direct file editing as an administrative operation rather than the everyday way to invite someone.
Prepare before you enable the whitelist
- Get a reliable control path. Confirm that you can open the live console, use an operator account, or access the provider’s settings page. If the server is hosted for you, note where its file manager and restart controls are located.
- Make a recovery copy. Before any manual edit, download or copy the current whitelist file. A backup gives you a known-good list if a malformed edit prevents the server from reading it.
- Collect the right identity. The documented add and remove forms accept an online username or an offline UUID. Ask the player for the exact identity that the server recognises; do not assume a display name is the same as a UUID.
- Plan a test. Keep one approved account available and, if possible, have an unlisted account attempt to connect. This verifies the access boundary instead of relying only on a successful command response.
- Tell players what will change. When a previously public server becomes restricted, anyone not yet added will be refused. Publish a short notice and collect names before switching modes.
Enable the whitelist from the server console
The console procedure is the clearest way to see the command response and is independent of a particular host’s panel design.
- Open the Hytale server’s live console. On a hosted service this is usually labelled Console; on a self-managed installation it is the terminal process running the server.
- Run
whitelist statusand record the reported state. This gives you a baseline before changing access. - Enter
whitelist enableand submit it exactly as shown. Do not add a slash in a conventional server console. - Run
whitelist statusagain. The result should show that the whitelist is enabled. If it does not, keep the server public while you resolve the command or permission error. - Use
whitelist listto see whether the expected authorised entries are present. - Test access with an approved account and, if you can do so safely, an account that is not on the list. A failed test should be investigated before you invite the wider group.
Command changes made through the console are the normal management route. Because restart behaviour is not consistently documented across current guides, verify the state and a real connection rather than promising that every build applies a change in exactly the same way.
Enable it from a hosting control panel

- Open the server in your provider’s dashboard and go to its options, settings, or configuration page.
- Find the setting labelled Whitelist or an equivalent access-control switch.
- Turn the switch on and save or apply the page if the panel provides a separate save button.
- Open the live console, if available, and use
whitelist statusto confirm the resulting state. - Add at least one player through the panel’s player field or the console command before asking that player to connect.
Panel workflows are host-specific. If the switch is absent, disabled, or does not expose add/remove controls, use the console commands instead and follow the provider’s current documentation. Do not assume that a setting shown for one host exists on another.

Replace <username> with the player’s actual Hytale username. The angle-bracket text is a notation marker, not something to type literally. Submit the command in the console without a slash. In in-game chat, use the game’s command form, normally /whitelist add <username>, while logged in with the privileges required to run server commands.

whitelist add <offline-UUID>
This is the more dependable identity for bulk administration or a player who is not currently online, provided you have obtained the UUID from a trusted server record or account-management workflow. Copy it exactly, including every character and hyphen. Do not substitute a nickname that merely resembles the player’s account identity.
Verify the new entry
- Run
whitelist list. - Check that the username or UUID you just submitted appears in the result.
- Ask the player to connect while the whitelist is enabled.
- If the connection is refused, compare the identity in the list with the identity supplied to the command before changing anything else.
Guides from GGServers, Nodecraft, and ZAP-Hosting all describe the console-based enable and player-management workflow. Their pages are hosting guidance rather than an official game specification, so use the syntax that your running build accepts.

Remove a player without disabling the whitelist
Removal changes one entry while leaving the access-control mode enabled. Use the same identity type you used when adding the player:
whitelist remove <username>whitelist remove <offline-UUID>
After submitting the command, run whitelist list and confirm that the entry is gone. If the player is currently connected, removing the record does not necessarily terminate that already-established session; disconnect the player through the server’s normal moderation controls if immediate removal is required.

Removing an entry is different from disabling the whitelist. Use removal when the server should remain private for everyone else. Use whitelist disable only when you intentionally want the server to accept public connections again.

Manual editing is appropriate when you must import many authorised identities, keep the list under version control, or synchronise it with another roster. It is not the safest choice for adding one person.
Find the file
The exact path was not confirmed consistently in available guides. Look in your host’s file manager or list the directories in the server installation rather than assuming a universal location. The file-and-folder overview at hytale.game’s file-structure guide can help you understand the layout, but your host may place the world and configuration files in a container-specific directory.

Stop, back up, and edit
- Stop the Hytale server cleanly from the control panel or its normal console shutdown procedure.
- Copy
whitelist.jsonto a dated backup location. Keep the original filename and a second copy outside the live server directory. - Open the file in a plain-text editor that does not add rich-text formatting.
- Preserve its top-level structure: current guides describe it as a JSON array containing the authorised players’ UUID strings. Keep every UUID in quotes, separate entries with commas, and do not add comments or trailing commas.
- Save the file and validate that it is well-formed JSON before putting it back into service. A JSON-aware editor can catch missing quotes, brackets, or commas.
- Start the server again.
- Run
whitelist statusandwhitelist listfrom the console, then test an approved account.
Do not edit the live file while the server is running. A running process can rewrite the file and overwrite your manual changes. Stop first, make the backup, edit, and restart; this is the safe sequence described in host documentation such as xGamingServer’s whitelist guide and holy.gg’s guide.
What to do if the edit is rejected
- Stop the server again and restore the last known-good backup.
- Check for a missing opening or closing bracket, an unquoted UUID, a missing comma between entries, or a comment inserted by the editor.
- Start the server and confirm that
whitelist listloads normally. - Reapply changes in small batches so that one malformed entry does not obscure the cause.

Troubleshoot “Hytale whitelist command not working”
The server says the command is unknown
- Confirm that you are at the Hytale server console, not a system shell, chat message, or a host’s general command box.
- Use the exact command hierarchy:
whitelistfollowed by a supported subcommand such asenable,status, orlist. - Remove the leading slash in the server console. Use the slash only in an in-game command input if that interface requires it.
- Check your Hytale build and host documentation. The currently available syntax comes from third-party guides, and no official Hypixel Studios reference was identified.
- Verify that the account running the in-game command has operator rights. If you have console access, repeat the operation there to separate a permissions problem from a syntax problem.
The command succeeds, but the player still cannot join
- Run
whitelist statusto ensure the protection mode is actually enabled or disabled as intended. - Run
whitelist listand compare the stored identity with the username or UUID used in the add command. - Remove and re-add the entry using the correct identity type if the list contains a typo.
- Ask the player to reconnect after the change. An already-established connection is not a reliable test of the current allow-list.
- If the list is correct but the connection is still refused, capture the exact console message and consult the host’s current Hytale support documentation.
The player was added, then disappeared from the list
This is a common symptom of editing the file while the server was running or of another process restoring an older configuration. Stop the server, restore the backup, make the change while it is stopped, and restart. Confirm the result with whitelist list rather than trusting the file timestamp alone.
You cannot locate whitelist.json
There is no confirmed universal path in the available material. Use the provider’s file manager search, inspect the server directory listing, or ask the host where configuration files are mounted. Do not create a second file in a guessed directory: the running server may ignore it.
The server unexpectedly became public
Run whitelist status immediately. If it reports disabled, run whitelist enable, verify the result, and review console or panel audit logs for who changed the setting. If the status is enabled but unlisted accounts can still join, capture the server version, connection path, and exact logs for the host; do not assume that an operator-bypass rule exists, because that behaviour was not confirmed in the available documentation.
Operating a whitelist safely
- Keep a change record. Note the date, identity added or removed, and the administrator who made the change. This makes accidental removals easier to reverse.
- Use least privilege. Give console or operator access only to people who need to administer the roster.
- Review the list periodically. Remove former members and temporary testers instead of leaving old access indefinitely.
- Back up before bulk work. A small JSON file is easy to copy, and the backup is more valuable than trying to reconstruct a lost roster from memory.
- Test after every mode change. Check status, inspect the list, and perform one approved-account connection test before announcing that the server is ready.
- Keep the access boundary separate from moderation. A whitelist controls who may enter; bans, roles, and in-game permissions still need their own administration.

The host pages are practical references, not a substitute for release-specific official documentation. If a future Hytale update changes a subcommand, panel label, UUID format, or file layout, trust the command help and documentation shipped for that version and keep a backup before experimenting.
