To host Play as Dragon: Comfort Edition with friends, first lock one exact pack release, then install the matching Minecraft version and Forge or NeoForge loader on the server. Every player must use that same Minecraft version, loader and pack file. The currently listed stable choice is Play as Dragon Comfort Edition-4.0 for Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge. A newer 5.0 beta targets Minecraft 26.1.2, while the older 13.06.2024 release targets Minecraft 1.19.2 on Forge.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
What Play as Dragon: Comfort Edition is
CurseForge describes the adventure and RPG/exploration pack this way: “Play as dragon, as bee, brain-stealer, desert claw, griffin and more! No hardcore for dragon fans.” It is a content pack rather than a vanilla server configuration, so a normal Minecraft server jar is not enough. The server must load the same mod files, libraries and configuration expected by the clients.

The current project should not be confused with the abandoned original Play as Dragon project. The original archive showed about 1.4 million downloads in CurseForge’s 2023 metadata, whereas the current Comfort Edition files page showed 56,074 total downloads when crawled in September 2026. Those figures refer to different project histories and are not a measure of server compatibility.
Choose one release before installing anything
Do not begin by downloading a random “latest” file. A modded server is a matched set: Minecraft version, loader, pack release and, where applicable, server-pack overrides. Select the release first and write its details down for every player.

| Pack release shown on the files page | Minecraft version | Loader | Status and upload date | Use case |

“Newest” does not mean “compatible with every client.” A 1.21.1 NeoForge client cannot join a 1.19.2 Forge server, and a beta 26.1.2 installation should not be mixed with the stable 1.21.1 files. If you change versions later, treat it as a migration: stop the server, back up the world and configuration, replace the complete pack set, and have every player update before reconnecting.
What you need before creating the server
A pinned client installation
Install the selected Comfort Edition file through CurseForge or another launcher that can install its required loader. Record the exact file name, Minecraft version and loader displayed by the launcher. Have at least one player launch the pack successfully in single-player first; this confirms that the chosen client profile is the one you intend to reproduce on the server.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A matching server loader
Install NeoForge for the selected NeoForge release, or Forge for the 1.19.2 Forge release. The loader is not interchangeable. Installing the right Minecraft version with the wrong loader still produces an incompatible server.
Server files or a server-ready export
Check the project’s files and documentation for a server pack or server-ready download. CurseForge’s hosted-server instructions are written for modpacks that provide a matching server pack. If no separate server package is offered, the client download may contain files that belong only on the client, so do not blindly copy every directory without checking the pack’s instructions.
A place to run it
You can run the server on a computer you control or deploy it with a managed host. The reviewed sources do not establish a universal RAM minimum or a required Java-runtime version for every Comfort Edition release. Verify the instructions attached to your selected file and watch the server console during startup rather than relying on a generic memory number.

Self-hosting: install the server step by step
1. Record the exact pack identity
- Open the official Play as Dragon: Comfort Edition project and select one file.
- Write down the release name, Minecraft version and loader exactly as displayed. For example:
Comfort Edition-4.0 / Minecraft 1.21.1 / NeoForge. - Download the corresponding client profile and, if listed, the matching server pack. Never substitute a similarly named file from the older project.
2. Create a clean server directory
Make a new folder dedicated to this server. Keeping it separate from vanilla worlds and other modpacks prevents an old mods, config or world directory from contaminating the installation. Use a short path that you can find easily when editing files or taking backups.
3. Install the matching Forge or NeoForge server
- Download the server installer for the exact Minecraft version and loader selected in step 1.
- Run the installer and choose the dedicated server directory.
- Confirm that the generated launcher files identify the same Minecraft and loader versions you recorded. If the installer offers a different version, cancel and obtain the matching one instead.
4. Start once, then accept the EULA where required
Run the generated server launcher once. This first run creates folders such as config, the world directory and server.properties, and it may stop while waiting for the Minecraft EULA. If an eula.txt file is created, read the license and set its acceptance value only if you agree to it. Start the server again until it reaches a normal running state, then stop it cleanly before installing or replacing pack files.
5. Apply the server pack and overrides
- Copy the matching server-pack contents into the server directory, preserving the directory structure supplied by the pack.
- Keep the pack’s configuration files and startup scripts unless its documentation explicitly says they are client-only.
- Remove client-only files only when the project marks them as unsupported on a dedicated server. Do not delete a mod merely because its name is unfamiliar.
Modrinth’s pack-format documentation describes server overrides as a way to separate server files from client files. That principle is useful even when the pack was obtained elsewhere: server-specific files should replace or supplement the base files exactly as the pack author specifies, not by manually guessing which mods look unnecessary.
6. Set the basic server properties
Open server.properties after the first successful generation and set the options your group needs, such as the world name, difficulty, game mode, player limit and whitelist. Keep the default server port unless you have a reason to change it. If friends will connect over the internet, note the address and port that your network or host exposes; do not publish your home IP more widely than necessary.
7. Start and read the console
Start the server with the same launcher you used for the test run. Let world generation finish and read the console from the first line. A healthy launch should proceed past mod discovery and registry setup to the normal “done” state for that loader. Stop immediately if the console reports missing dependencies, a wrong Minecraft version, duplicate mods or registry errors; those messages usually identify a mismatched file rather than a world problem.

8. Back up before inviting anyone
Stop the server and copy the world, config, mods and relevant launcher or script files to a separate backup location. Make another backup before every pack update. A backup made while the server is still writing chunks may be incomplete, so stop it cleanly first.
How friends join
Make clients identical
Give every player the exact release name, Minecraft version and loader. Ask them to install the same file through CurseForge or a compatible launcher, rather than assembling individual mods by hand. The client and server must agree on mod versions, required dependencies and configuration expectations.
Use a whitelist and test one connection
- Enable the server whitelist and add each player’s Minecraft name.
- Start the server and have one player connect first.
- Test spawning, changing dimensions and saving the world before inviting the full group.
If the first player receives a “mod list mismatch,” “incompatible version,” or similar disconnect, compare the recorded release, Minecraft version and loader before changing the world. Do not solve a client mismatch by deleting random server mods.
Address and network exposure
Players on the same local network can normally use the host computer’s local address. Internet players need the externally reachable address and an allowed port, whether supplied by your router or a hosting panel. Self-hosting requires you to handle firewall rules, port forwarding and changing home-network addresses; a managed host generally provides a connection address without asking you to expose a personal machine.

- If a server pack is listed: use the one that matches the exact release and loader, then follow its folder layout.
- If only a client pack is listed: install the loader separately, inspect the project instructions for dedicated-server exclusions, and remove only files explicitly identified as client-only.
- If the instructions are unclear: do not guess. Test the cleanest documented arrangement, keep the console output, and avoid opening the server to friends until it starts without dependency or registry errors.
Managed hosting instead of a home computer
A managed host trades some control for an administration panel, persistent hardware and support. CurseForge documents a hosted deployment flow that avoids manual port forwarding when the modpack and host are compatible. The Shockbyte panel is described as providing console access, file management, restarts and backups; Tebex is identified as the merchant of record for that service. Modrinth Hosting integrates modpack installation and supports Forge, NeoForge, Fabric and Quilt. StickyPiston advertises a dedicated Play As Dragon hosting service with updates, testing and fixes.
Availability, supported pack versions, pricing and referral terms can change. Before paying, select the exact Comfort Edition release in the host’s installer or ask support to confirm it in writing.

Installing the pack on a managed host
- Choose a host that lists the exact Minecraft version and Forge or NeoForge loader for your pinned release.
- Use the panel’s modpack installer if it offers Play as Dragon: Comfort Edition. Select the release number, not merely the project name.
- If the pack is not in the installer, upload the matching server pack through the panel or SFTP, preserving its folder structure.
- Confirm the startup profile points to the correct loader and Minecraft version.
- Start once, read the console for missing dependencies or registry errors, and stop for correction if anything fails.
- Set properties, enable a whitelist, create a backup and test with one player before sharing the address.
A host’s one-click installer is not permission to mix files. If the panel installs a different loader or an older pack release than your clients, remove that installation and deploy the pinned set instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting the first launch
The server stops with a missing dependency
Compare the server pack with the selected client release. A dependency can be absent because the wrong server archive was copied, because a client-only export was used, or because files from two releases were combined. Restore the clean backup, copy the matching server pack again and restart while watching the first error rather than the final cascade of failures.
Registry or mod-loading errors appear
Registry errors commonly indicate a Minecraft-version or loader mismatch, duplicate jars or an incomplete update. Verify the release table entry, remove duplicate copies and ensure every required file came from the same pack version. Do not carry an old config directory into a new major release unless the pack instructions explicitly support it.
The client is rejected for an incompatible mod list
Have the player open the launcher profile and compare its pack file, Minecraft version and loader with the server record. A visually similar profile can still point to 1.19.2 Forge instead of 1.21.1 NeoForge. Reinstalling the exact profile is safer than manually adding or deleting mods.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
The server starts but players time out
Separate software compatibility from networking. Test a local connection first. For self-hosting, check the operating-system firewall, router port forwarding and the address being given to players. For a managed host, confirm the panel’s assigned address and port and check whether the server is actually running. Keep the server stopped while changing network rules only if the host’s instructions require it.
An update breaks the existing world
Stop the server, restore the pre-update backup and return clients to the previous release. Only then test the new pack on a copy of the world. Keep old and new server directories separate so a rollback does not overwrite the files you may need to recover.
A safe update and rollback routine
- Announce a maintenance window and stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the world, configuration, current pack files and launcher settings to a dated backup.
- Read the new release notes and confirm its Minecraft version and loader before downloading.
- Install the new server pack in a separate directory or after preserving the old directory intact.
- Start without players, inspect the console and test a copy of the world.
- Only after the test succeeds, update every client to the same release and reopen the whitelist.
- If errors or world damage appear, stop, restore the dated backup and return clients to the previous profile.
This process matters especially when moving between the stable 1.21.1 NeoForge line, the 26.1.2 NeoForge beta and the legacy 1.19.2 Forge line. They are separate compatibility targets, not interchangeable patch updates.
Recommended choice for most groups
For a new server, pin Play as Dragon Comfort Edition-4.0 on Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge, because it is the listed stable line. Choose the 26.1.2 NeoForge beta only when all players knowingly want beta software and the host confirms support. Use the 1.19.2 Forge release when an existing world or mod collection requires that legacy environment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOnce the release is selected, the practical rule is simple: install its matching server loader, apply the documented server files, test a clean launch, back up the world and give friends the identical client profile. Whether the machine is at home or in a managed panel, version discipline prevents most failed joins and startup errors.
