The safest way to set up an All of Fabric 5 (AOF5) server is to match every component to the modpack’s exact Minecraft version, then choose either one-click hosting or a manual Fabric installation. A hosted server removes most installation work. A self-hosted server gives you control over files, mods and configuration, but you must install the correct Fabric loader, use a compatible Java release, place the mod files correctly and accept Minecraft’s EULA.

AOF5’s target version must be checked on its current modpack page before you install anything. Some listings identify an AOF5 build for Minecraft 1.18.1, while Fabric’s current installer can offer much newer Minecraft releases; those versions are not interchangeable.

Your first decision is whether a provider will install the pack for you or whether you will operate the server yourself.

When hosted installation makes sense
Several Minecraft hosts describe an AOF5 selector that installs the modpack as part of server creation. The usual flow is to create a Minecraft server, activate the Fabric launcher or modpack installer, search for All of Fabric, select the matching release and allow the panel to deploy it. The exact labels differ between providers, so verify the selected Minecraft version before starting the installation.

After deployment, start the server once and inspect the console. A successful first start should generate the world and configuration files. Give players the server address only after the console remains online without a repeating crash loop.
When self-hosting makes sense
Self-hosting is preferable when you need to edit individual configuration files, add or remove compatible mods, control backups or run the server on your own hardware. It also makes version mistakes easier to diagnose because you can see the installer output and complete server directory.

Confirm AOF5’s Minecraft version before downloading anything
Do not select the latest Minecraft release simply because it is offered by the Fabric installer. AOF5 listings have been identified as a Minecraft 1.18.1 or 1.18 pack, but the currently maintained listing must be treated as authoritative. The official CurseForge or Modrinth page was not verified for this setup, so the target version remains a point you must check yourself immediately before installation.
- Open the modpack’s current project page and record the Minecraft version shown for the release you intend to run.
- Check whether the download is a complete server pack or only a client instance. A client profile may not contain the files needed for a dedicated server.
- Ensure every player installs the same AOF5 release, Minecraft version and Fabric loader family.
- Do not mix an AOF5 build for 1.18.1 with a Fabric server launched for a later release. Mods compiled for another Minecraft version normally fail during loading.
Write the chosen Minecraft version in your server notes. It is the reference for the Fabric installer, Java selection and troubleshooting.
Java requirements and Fabric installer
Fabric’s installation guidance recommends Java 21 for Minecraft 1.20.5 and later. The server installer also reports the Java version expected by the Minecraft version you select. For Minecraft 26.1 and newer, the installer output states that Java 25 is required. Use the installer’s message for your chosen release rather than assuming that the Java version used by another AOF5 guide is still correct.
Check Java before installation
- Open a terminal or command prompt on the machine that will run the server.
- Run
java -version. - Compare the reported major version with the requirement for the Minecraft version you recorded.
- If the version is wrong, install the required Java runtime and ensure the
javacommand resolves to that installation before running Fabric.
For a confirmed 1.18.x server, older Java guidance may apply; for 1.20.5 and later, Java 21 is the stated recommendation. Minecraft 26.1 and newer require the Java 25 note printed by the installer. These requirements are tied to Minecraft versions, not to the word “Fabric” alone.

Download the Fabric server installer from fabricmc.net/use/server. Select the exact Minecraft version required by AOF5, then run the installer in an empty server directory or use its documented server-install option. The launcher downloads the game and loader components on first run, so the server machine needs network access during initial setup.
Self-hosted setup: complete procedure
1. Prepare a dedicated directory
Create a new directory used only by this server. Keeping AOF5 separate from vanilla servers prevents old worlds, mods and configuration files from being loaded accidentally. Use a path you can back up and, on a hosted virtual machine, a location with enough free disk space for the world and mod files.
2. Download and extract the AOF5 server files
Download the server files for the exact AOF5 release from the modpack’s current project page. Extract the archive into the dedicated directory. If the archive contains a nested folder, place the actual server files where you intend to launch the server; otherwise you may later edit one directory while launching another.
Do not assume that a client-only download is sufficient. A server pack normally includes the mod jars and supporting files intended for dedicated-server use. If the release provides separate client and server downloads, choose the server package.
3. Install the matching Fabric server
- Open the Fabric server installer page at fabricmc.net/use/server.
- Choose the Minecraft version listed by AOF5, not the newest version shown by default.
- Choose the loader and installer versions offered for that Minecraft release unless the modpack documentation specifies another compatible loader.
- Point the installer at the directory containing the extracted server files, or run it there according to the installer’s instructions.
- Read the installer output. It identifies the Java version expected by the selected Minecraft release and may download game and loader files on first launch.
A September 28, 2026 snapshot of the Fabric page showed Minecraft 26.3 with Fabric Loader 0.19.5 and installer 1.1.2 as “latest” at that time. Those numbers are volatile and are not a recommendation for AOF5; select the versions that match the pack instead.
4. Put the mod jars in the correct folder
Locate the AOF5 mod jars and place them in the server directory’s mods/ folder. Do not put them in an unrelated client profile or leave them inside the downloaded archive. Keep the pack’s required dependencies together and avoid adding extra mods until the unmodified pack starts successfully.

If the archive already contains a mods/ directory, merge its contents into the server’s directory rather than creating a second nested path such as mods/mods/. A server that starts without loading the pack is often pointed at the wrong directory or missing the jars entirely.
5. Start once and accept the EULA
Launch the Fabric server using the startup script or command created by the installer. A common launcher filename is fabric-server-launch.jar; use the exact filename shown in your directory. The first run normally stops after creating initial files, including eula.txt.

- Open
eula.txtin a text editor. - Change
eula=falsetoeula=true. - Save the file without changing its name or extension.
- Start the server again.
The server will not come online until the EULA is set to true. Accepting it is an administrative prerequisite, not a modpack setting.
6. Let the world finish generating
The first successful start can take considerably longer than later starts because the server creates the world and initializes mod data. Watch the console for a ready message and make sure it does not end with an exception. Only then connect with a client running the same AOF5 release.
Legacy launch-file names
Some hosting panels use a custom Java filename rather than the default Fabric name. A Shockbyte guide describes these older conventions:

These names are panel-specific and may change. Verify the current host’s startup documentation and the installer output before renaming anything. On a self-hosted machine, keep the filename expected by the generated launch script unless you deliberately update that script too.

How much RAM does AOF5 need?
No independent benchmark establishing AOF5’s exact memory requirement was identified. Published figures are hosting-company estimates, so treat them as starting points rather than guarantees.

For a group server, budget at least 8 GB and then adjust from observed usage. Allocate memory to the Java process without starving the operating system and other services. Player count, world size, exploration, chunk generation and additional mods can all change the amount needed.
Adjust RAM from evidence
- Begin with the amount your host or machine can reliably provide; do not treat a vendor minimum as a performance guarantee.
- Watch memory usage while several players explore new terrain and while the server is saving.
- If the process repeatedly reaches its limit, increase the allocation only when the machine has unused physical memory.
- If the server remains responsive with substantial headroom, adding more RAM alone is unlikely to improve performance.
Performance settings for a new world
A 2026 setup guide suggests setting view distance to 10 and pre-generating the world with Chunky. View distance controls how many chunks the server keeps active around players; lowering it can reduce workload, while pre-generation moves terrain creation out of peak play time.
Set view distance
After the first start creates server.properties, open it and set the view-distance value to 10 as a practical starting point. Restart the server after saving the file. Change it only after testing the effect with your actual player count and hardware.
Pre-generate terrain with Chunky
Install a Chunky version compatible with the exact Minecraft and Fabric versions used by AOF5. Define a world border or generation area, start the pre-generation process from the server console or the mod’s documented command interface, and wait for completion before inviting players to explore widely. Remove or update Chunky only after confirming that the world remains loadable; never install an arbitrary version built for another Minecraft release.

- Give every player the same AOF5 release, Minecraft version and Fabric loader-compatible client profile.
- Have players install the pack through the same distribution source used for the server release.
- Share the server address only after the console reports a completed startup.
- Ask a player to connect while monitoring the console so missing mods or rejected versions can be identified immediately.
A client that has a different mod list can disconnect with a missing-mod, incompatible-version or registry error even when the server itself is healthy.

Troubleshooting AOF5 startup failures
“EULA not accepted” or the server exits immediately
Open eula.txt in the directory from which the server is actually launching. Set eula=true, save it, and restart. If the file keeps reverting, you may be editing a different directory, the panel may be recreating files, or the account may not have permission to write there.

Java version error
Run java -version and compare it with the requirement printed by the Fabric installer. Java 21 is recommended for Minecraft 1.20.5 and later; Minecraft 26.1 and newer require the Java 25 version noted by the installer. Correct the system path or the host panel’s Java selector, then launch again.
Mod resolution or loader errors
- Confirm that the server’s Minecraft version exactly matches AOF5’s release.
- Confirm that every jar in
mods/belongs to that version and to Fabric, not Forge or another loader. - Remove manually added mods and test the unmodified pack.
- Check that the jars are directly inside
mods/, not in a nested archive directory.
The server starts, but vanilla content appears
This usually indicates that Fabric launched from a directory without the AOF5 jars. Stop the server, inspect the working directory shown by the panel or launch script, and place the pack’s mods in that directory’s mods/ folder.
Players cannot join because of version mismatch
Compare the client and server Minecraft versions, AOF5 release identifiers and loader versions. Do not “fix” the error by updating only the server to the latest Minecraft release; update both sides to a modpack release that explicitly supports that version.
Lag during exploration
Check whether the server is generating large amounts of new terrain. Use the suggested view distance of 10, pre-generate the intended play area with a compatible Chunky release, and observe memory and CPU usage before changing several settings at once.
