For a reliable Project Ozone 3 server, use the pack’s 3.4.11F server files, run Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge with Java 8, and give the machine at least the pack’s official 6 GB RAM floor. A small private group should normally plan 6–8 GB for the server process; five to 10 players may need roughly 8–10 GB, leaving additional memory for the operating system. Self-hosting gives maximum control, while managed Minecraft hosting removes most Java, firewall and networking work.

What you are hosting

Project Ozone is a family of modpacks. This guide is for Project Ozone 3: A New Way Forward, not Project Ozone 2. Project Ozone 3 runs on Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge. Its client and server must use the same pack release and configuration; a vanilla Minecraft server or a different Project Ozone version will not accept the correct clients.

The CurseForge pack listing says: “PO3 needs at least 6Gb of ram (at most 8Gb) to load any less and the pack might crash.” That is the official listing guidance, not a guarantee that every multiplayer world will stay below 8 GB. A world with more players, chunk loading, automation and dimensions can need more memory.

Hardware and software requirements

Java 8 is the compatibility target

Install a 64-bit Java 8 runtime (Java 1.8) for the server. Forge for Minecraft 1.12.2 is commonly configured around Java 8, and newer Java releases are a frequent cause of 1.12.2 Forge launch failures. The GameTeam setup guide specifically suggests Java 8u321 or a similar Java 8 build; treat that build number as a compatibility recommendation from one guide rather than a universal requirement.

If the machine also runs newer Java applications, do not change the system-wide default just for this server. Point the Project Ozone start script at the full path of the Java 8 executable. Verify the executable used by the script, not merely the Java version shown in a different terminal.

How much RAM to allocate

Guidance Figure How to interpret it
CurseForge Project Ozone 3 listing At least 6 GB; at most 8 GB stated Use 6 GB as the official floor. Less can cause crashes.
GameTeam guide About 6 GB for 2–3 players A reasonable starting point for a small private server.
GameTeam guide About 8–10 GB for 5–10 players Allow more heap as players, chunks and machines increase.
BisectHosting listing 4 GB recommended Likely optimistic compared with the official 6 GB floor; treat it as a provider-specific estimate.
StickyPiston listing 4 GB minimum; 5 GB or more for public use Also below the official floor for a comfortable PO3 installation.

These are allocation figures, not total physical memory. The operating system, Java overhead, file cache and other services need headroom. On a self-hosted machine, install more physical RAM than the heap you assign; for example, an 8 GB heap should not be placed on a computer with only 8 GB total memory. Increase the heap only after checking actual usage and stability.

CPU and storage

A GameTeam setup guide emphasizes strong single-core performance (3.5 GHz or higher) over simply counting cores and calls SSD storage essential. That is a guide-level recommendation rather than a published benchmark, but it matches the practical behavior of heavily ticked modded worlds: one overloaded server thread can cause lag even when other cores are idle. Put the server files, world and backups on an SSD, and avoid running intensive unrelated workloads on the same machine.

Self-hosting or managed hosting?

Both approaches run the same pack files. The difference is who handles the machine and network.

Decision factor Self-hosted computer or VPS Managed Minecraft host
Setup effort You install Java, upload files, configure the service, firewall and router. Usually a one-click modpack installation with a control panel.
Control Full control over files, Java path, launch flags, backups and update timing. Control depends on the provider’s panel and allowed versions.
Networking You open the firewall and forward the Minecraft port from your router. The provider normally supplies a public address and handles the host network.
RAM ceiling Limited by the machine you own or rent; upgrades are your responsibility. Limited by the selected plan and any provider node limits.
Cost Uses an existing computer or a separate VPS; electricity or rental cost is yours. Recurring hosting charge; no current prices were published.
Maintenance You perform Java, pack, Forge, backup and security updates. The host may automate backups and updates, but you still control pack compatibility.
Uptime Depends on your power, internet connection and maintenance. Usually benefits from datacenter connectivity, subject to the provider’s service terms.

Choose self-hosting when you need file-level control or already have a suitable always-on machine. Choose managed hosting when router access, Linux administration or Java troubleshooting would be the main obstacles. Managed providers advertise Project Ozone 3 one-click or modpack installations, but confirm the exact pack release and available RAM before ordering.

Prepare the server before downloading files

  1. Decide the player count and memory budget. Use the official 6 GB floor for a small test, plan around 6–8 GB for a small group, and consider 8–10 GB for five to 10 players. Reserve memory for the operating system.
  2. Use a clean server directory. Create a dedicated folder on an SSD. Do not place it inside a client installation or mix it with another modpack.
  3. Install 64-bit Java 8. Record the absolute path to its executable so the start script can select it explicitly.
  4. Check permissions. The account running the server needs read and write access to the directory, world, logs and backups. On Linux, avoid running the server as root.
  5. Plan an address. Players on the same home network can use the host’s local address. Internet players need your public address, a router forward and a firewall rule.

Download the correct Project Ozone 3 server files

Open the Project Ozone 3 listing on CurseForge and download the entry named 3.4.11F Server Files. TechBloat describes 3.4.11F as the last release in its 2026 guide. Keep the downloaded archive intact until you have verified its contents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GameTeam advises using version 3.4.6 or newer because older releases had expert-mode bugs. The 3.4.11F package therefore meets that minimum. Do not copy only selected mods from your client. Do not use Project Ozone 2 files, an older PO3 archive or a client-only export.

Match every player to the server release

Every player should install the same Project Ozone 3 release, Minecraft 1.12.2 and Forge profile expected by the server files. A client that differs by pack version can disconnect with missing-mod, registry or network errors. Keep a note of the exact release in your server’s welcome message so new players do not guess.

Install and start a self-hosted server

1. Extract and inspect the package

Extract the server archive into the dedicated directory. Look for the supplied launch script, Forge files, configuration folders and documentation. Preserve the directory structure. If your operating system blocks a downloaded script, remove the downloaded-file security block using the operating system’s file properties rather than editing files at random.

2. Set the Java executable and heap

Edit the supplied start script and set its Java command to the absolute Java 8 executable path. Set the heap flags according to your plan, for example -Xms6G -Xmx6G for a six-gigabyte starting allocation or -Xms8G -Xmx8G on a machine reserved for a larger group. The exact script syntax varies by package and operating system; keep the existing Forge arguments and change only the Java path and memory flags unless the package documentation says otherwise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

-Xmx is the maximum heap. -Xms is the initial heap. Setting both to the same value can avoid resizing pauses, but it also reserves that memory immediately. Never set -Xmx equal to all physical RAM. If the process is killed by the operating system, reduce the heap or add physical memory before troubleshooting mods.

3. Start once and accept the EULA

  1. Run the supplied start script from the server directory with Java 8 selected.
  2. Allow the first launch to create the EULA and configuration files, then stop the process cleanly from the console.
  3. Open eula.txt, read the Mojang EULA, and change eula=false to eula=true only if you agree to it.
  4. Start the script again and wait for the console to report that the server is ready. The first launch can take several minutes while Forge and mods build caches.

Do not close the terminal or kill the process while the world is being generated. Use the server console’s stop command for normal shutdown so chunks and region files are saved.

4. Configure the world and server properties

Stop the server before editing server.properties. Set a unique motd, choose the difficulty and whitelist policy, and verify server-port. The default Minecraft Java port is 25565, but the value in server.properties is authoritative. If you change it, use the new number in the firewall and router.

For a Garden of Glass world, the GameTeam steps guide recommends changing level-type and generator-settings in server.properties. The exact generator string is pack- and configuration-sensitive, so copy the values supplied with the 3.4.11F instructions rather than inventing a value. Make this choice before the first permanent world is generated; changing it later does not convert an existing world.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set online-mode=true unless you have a specific, lawful reason to run otherwise. Keep the whitelist enabled while testing, and grant operator status only to trusted administrators.

5. Test locally before inviting anyone

  1. Start the server and wait for the ready message.
  2. From the host computer, connect using localhost or the local address and the configured port.
  3. Join with a client using the matching Project Ozone 3 release.
  4. Travel between dimensions, place machines and watch the console for repeated errors.
  5. Stop cleanly, restart, and confirm that the world and player data persist.

Testing locally separates pack problems from router problems. If the host cannot connect locally, port forwarding will not fix the underlying Forge, Java or file mismatch.

Open the port for outside players

Port 25565 is Minecraft Java’s default, not a Project Ozone-specific guarantee. First check server-port in server.properties. Create an inbound firewall rule for that TCP port on the host’s local IP. Then create a router port-forward rule that sends the same external port to the host’s local IP and the configured server port.

  1. Give the host a stable local address using a DHCP reservation or a static configuration.
  2. Permit the configured TCP port through the operating system firewall.
  3. Forward that port on the router to the host’s local address.
  4. Have a player outside your home network test the public address. Testing from inside the same network can fail on routers without NAT loopback support.
  5. If it still fails, check that the server is running, the router rule points to the current local IP, and your internet provider is not using carrier-grade NAT.

Never publish your home address in a public chat. Share only the game address and port, and restrict access with a whitelist.

Managed-host setup

A managed host normally provides a control panel rather than a shell. Select Project Ozone 3, verify that the available image is 3.4.11F or another release you intentionally want, and choose a plan that meets the 6 GB official floor. A plan advertised with 4 GB may launch in light testing but is below the pack listing’s stated minimum.

  1. Create the server instance and select the Project Ozone 3 installation offered by the panel.
  2. Check the panel’s Java setting. It must provide Java 8 for Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge.
  3. Set the memory allocation without consuming the entire plan’s system memory.
  4. Start once, accept the EULA in the file manager or console, and restart.
  5. Set the world, whitelist, operator permissions and server-port from the panel.
  6. Use the address and port supplied by the host. Do not assume 25565 if the panel assigns a different port.

One-click installation reduces technical work but does not remove compatibility checks. Before moving an existing world, stop both servers, copy the complete world directory and matching configuration, and keep an untouched backup in case the host’s Forge build differs.

Backups, updates and safe maintenance

Back up the right files

Stop the server before making a full backup, or use a backup method that guarantees a consistent snapshot. Include the world directory, server.properties, whitelist and operator files, scripts, configuration folders, and any custom settings. Keep at least one copy away from the server machine. Test restoration on a separate directory; a backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.

Update deliberately

Read the current CurseForge listing before updating because server-file versions, Java advice and memory behavior can change. Make a dated backup, record the old release, and test the new files on a copy of the world first. Never overwrite a working server while it is running. Require every client to update to the same pack release before reconnecting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use graceful shutdowns

Send the console’s stop command, wait for the save to complete, and then update or reboot the machine. Forced termination risks corrupting region, player and mod data, especially during chunk generation or automation activity.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause Action
Forge fails before the server reaches the ready message Wrong Java major version or an incompatible Java 8 build Confirm the script uses 64-bit Java 8. Try the Java 8 build recommended by your pack documentation, then inspect the first error in the log.
The process exits or the machine swaps heavily Heap is too large for physical RAM, or the pack is below its memory needs Leave operating-system headroom, use at least the official 6 GB floor, and add physical RAM or reduce other workloads.
Players report missing mods or registry errors Client and server releases do not match Install the same Project Ozone 3 release and Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge on every client; do not mix PO2 and PO3 files.
Local connection works but internet players cannot join Firewall, router forwarding, changing local IP or carrier-grade NAT Check server-port, reserve the host’s local IP, permit the port, verify the forward and test from an external network.
World generates with the wrong terrain Generator settings were changed after world creation or contain an invalid value Stop the server, verify level-type and generator-settings, and create a new test world before replacing a valued save.
Severe tick lag despite free total CPU Single-thread workload, chunk loading or automation spikes Move to a faster single-core CPU, reduce simultaneous chunk loaders, inspect overloaded dimensions and keep the world on SSD storage.
Server starts but crashes while loading a world Corrupt save, incomplete update or incompatible configuration Restore the last known-good backup, compare configuration changes, and test the update on a copy rather than the only live world.

A practical launch checklist

  • Project Ozone 3, not Project Ozone 2, is selected.
  • Server files are 3.4.11F, or at least 3.4.6 when an older release is deliberately required.
  • Every client uses the same pack release, Minecraft 1.12.2 and Forge profile.
  • Java 8 is installed and explicitly selected by the start script or host panel.
  • The server has at least 6 GB available for the pack, plus operating-system headroom.
  • The heap flags match the machine’s physical memory.
  • The EULA is accepted and the server has completed one clean start and stop.
  • server-port, firewall and router forwarding agree; 25565 is used only when that setting remains unchanged.
  • Whitelist and operator permissions are configured before public access.
  • A tested backup exists before the first major build or version update.
