There are two practical ways to enable cheats on a 7 Days to Die server. Set BuildCreate to true in serverconfig.xml if every player should have Creative Mode. For an admin-only setup, leave that setting disabled, grant your account level-0 admin access with admin add <name or ID> 0 in the server console, then use the in-game F1 console commands dm and cm. Check the server’s game version before editing anything: V3.x changed the configuration layout, and older instructions may not match a current generated file.

Choose whether cheats are for everyone or only administrators
The correct method depends on the scope you want. Creative access for all players is a server configuration choice. Debug and creative tools for selected people require administrator permissions first, followed by commands entered from inside the game.

A server browser may label a server with Creative Mode enabled as “Modded.” One host guide makes that claim, but it has not been confirmed by an official source, so treat the label as possible rather than guaranteed.
Prepare the server before changing anything
- Identify the edition and version. These instructions target a PC dedicated server. Record the exact game/server build shown by your host or server launcher. V3.x moved numerous gameplay settings out of
serverconfig.xml, so a guide written for an older release can point to a property that is no longer generated or has changed behavior. - Stop the server cleanly. Use the host panel’s stop action or the server’s normal shutdown command. Editing a file while the process is writing it can discard your change.
- Back up the configuration. Copy
serverconfig.xmlto a separate location and keep the original filename available for rollback. Also record who currently has admin access if this is a shared server. - Open the configuration generated for this server. Do not assume that a file copied from another version has the same properties. Search for
BuildCreaterather than pasting an old block blindly. - Plan a restart. Configuration values are read when the server starts. After saving a valid XML file, start the server again and verify the result with a test account before inviting everyone back.
Older instructions often show a line similar to <property name='BuildCreate' value='false' /> with a comment describing cheat mode. That syntax is useful for recognizing the property, not proof that every current V3.x server still exposes it. If your current file does not contain BuildCreate, do not invent a replacement property; check the documentation for the exact server build or use the admin-only route.

Path A: enable Creative Mode for every player
Set BuildCreate to true
- With the server stopped, open its active
serverconfig.xml. - Find the existing
BuildCreateproperty. Change only its value fromfalsetotrue, preserving the surrounding XML. The resulting entry should look like<property name='BuildCreate' value='true' />. - Save the file as UTF-8 plain text under the same name. Do not add a second
BuildCreateentry; duplicate properties can make it unclear which value the server reads. - Start the server and wait until it reports that the world is ready. Have a player reconnect rather than testing from a stale session.
- Open the game’s Creative Menu with the normal in-game key described by your build. In the PC workflow documented by the wiki, the Creative Menu inventory is opened with
U.
Host documentation describes BuildCreate as a server-wide switch, with false as the default. It is therefore appropriate for a creative-building or testing world where every participant is trusted, not for a survival server whose economy or progression must remain intact.
When this route is the wrong choice
- Do not use it merely to give yourself building materials on a public or semi-public server: the switch applies to all players.
- Do not assume that setting it on the client changes a dedicated server. The server’s configuration is the controlling file in the host-guide procedure.
- Do not rely on an old property comment to establish current V3.x behavior. Confirm that the property exists in the file generated by the running version.
Path B: give cheats to administrators only
This route leaves the server in its normal non-creative state and grants special access to named administrators. It is the safer choice when most players should retain survival progression.
Find the correct player name or ID
Join the server with the account that should receive access, then use the server’s player-list commands. lp lists connected players and their IDs. The host/wiki command references also use lpi when a persistent identifier is needed. A name can be used while that player is online; an ID obtained from the player-information command can be used to target an offline player.
Grant level-0 admin access
- Open the server console provided by your host or dedicated-server process. This is the server command console, not merely the chat box.
- Run
admin add <name or ID> 0, replacing the bracketed text with the player’s exact name or identifier. Do not type the angle brackets. - Level
0is the full-admin level in this command scheme. A normal player’s default level is1000, so omitting the level or using a higher number does not grant the same access. - Confirm the assignment with
admin list. If the player was already in the world, have them reconnect if the permission is not recognized immediately.
Use the ID route for scheduled maintenance or an administrator who is not currently connected. A name-only assignment is tied to the online player lookup described by the command documentation.

Remove access when the job is finished
Run admin remove <name> from the server console to revoke the named administrator. Check admin list afterward. Removing an account from the list is preferable to leaving level-0 access on a shared or public server indefinitely.
Enable the tools in the game
- Reconnect with the account that now has administrator permission.
- Press
F1to open the in-game console. - Enter
dmand press Enter. This toggles the Debug Menu. - Press
Escto view the debug controls. The documented functions include God Mode, Fly Mode, time controls and speed sliders, along with utility actions such as setting a position or recalculating light. - Return to the F1 console and enter
cmto toggle the Creative Menu. PressUto open the inventory containing every item in the documented PC workflow.
A community wiki note says that entering dm can also enable the Creative Menu and related functions. Because that combined behavior is version-sensitive, use cm explicitly when you need the item inventory and test both toggles on the exact server build you operate.

dm: Debug Menu
dm toggles debugging features for an authorized player. The menu reached through Esc exposes God Mode and Fly Mode, time and speed sliders, and several world-testing tools. These controls affect more than construction: God Mode can remove ordinary survival danger, while time controls can alter the pace of a test session. Turn the mode off with the same command when you finish rather than assuming a reconnect will clear it.
cm: Creative Menu
cm toggles access to the Creative Menu. In the documented PC interface, U opens an inventory containing every item. This is the command to use when your purpose is spawning blocks, tools or other test items rather than flying or changing debug values.

Why an admin can have one tool but not the other
Debug and Creative access are separate toggles. A player may have administrator permission but still need to run dm or cm in the current session. Conversely, a Creative Menu option exposed to a client does not establish that the dedicated server has granted administrative rights.
The in-game Cheat Mode option and its limits
The community wiki describes a Cheat Mode setting in the game’s Advanced tab. That client-facing option controls access to the Creative Menu. The same wiki says the Debug Menu must be enabled with dm before God Mode is available.
This option should not be confused with the server property. The available documentation does not explain how the Advanced-tab setting interacts with BuildCreate on a dedicated server. Treat them as separate controls: use the server configuration for an all-player Creative setup, and use the server-console admin assignment plus F1 commands for administrator-only tools. If a client setting appears to do nothing, test from an account that has actually been granted server admin access.
Console platforms
The community wiki states that console versions have no cheats beyond Creative Menu access. The PC-specific F1 console, admin add workflow and server XML instructions should therefore not be presented as universal console instructions. On a console-hosted world, use only the Creative Menu access exposed by that platform and its current game menus; do not expect PC keyboard commands to work.

Version and configuration caveats
V3.x changed where settings live
A host guide reports that V3.x moved many gameplay settings out of serverconfig.xml. The exact current property list is not established here, and the presence of BuildCreate in every V3.x deployment has not been confirmed. Always compare the property in your own generated file with documentation for the same release.
Do not substitute an unverified SandboxCode setting
Search summaries have mentioned a SandboxCode value for difficulty, loot and experience in V3+, but that property is not confirmed by a cited source. It is not a replacement for BuildCreate, and it should not be added as a cheat switch.

Some hosting summaries say commands can be sent through a web panel or telnet using the password in serverconfig.xml. The details were not confirmed by an official source. Use the console interface your host explicitly documents, and do not expose a remote port or copy a password into a third-party tool based only on an unverified summary.
Troubleshooting
The Creative Menu is still unavailable after changing the XML
- Confirm that the server was stopped before editing and restarted afterward.
- Check that the active server instance is reading the file you changed; hosts sometimes maintain separate files for different worlds or instances.
- Verify that the XML contains one
BuildCreateentry and that its value is exactlytrue, with matching quotation marks and a self-closing tag. - If the property is missing in a V3.x file, stop editing by guesswork. Use the admin-only workflow or obtain version-specific documentation.
The admin command is rejected or the player receives no powers
- Run the command in the server console, not the in-game chat field.
- Check the spelling and capitalization of the player name, or use the persistent ID for an offline account.
- Include the final
0; level 0 is the full-admin assignment described by the command reference. - Run
admin listto verify the account, then reconnect and executedmorcmfrom F1.
dm works but God Mode or Fly Mode is not visible
Press Esc after entering dm; the debug controls are accessed through that menu rather than the item inventory. If the menu is still absent, verify that the account has server admin permission and that the command was accepted by the current build.

cm runs but the inventory is empty
Press U after toggling the Creative Menu. If the key does not open the inventory, check the game’s current key binding and confirm that cm was entered in the F1 console, not typed into normal chat.
An offline administrator cannot be added by name
That behavior is expected in the documented command workflow. Look up the persistent identifier with the player-information command and run admin add <ID> 0 instead of using a name that is not currently online.
Players report that cheats remain after you intended to disable them
If you used Path A, set BuildCreate back to false, restart the server and test with a non-admin account. If you used Path B, run admin remove <name> for each temporary administrator and confirm the result with admin list. A player who still has level-0 access can continue to toggle tools with F1 until that permission is revoked.
