You can host a Rust dedicated server on your own Windows, Linux, or macOS PC with SteamCMD and Rust App ID 258550. Reserve at least 12 GB of free RAM and 15 GB of free disk space, preferably on an SSD or NVMe drive, then install the server, start it with a batch-mode command, and forward the game and query ports if friends will connect over the internet. You do not need a Steam account to install or run the server, but every player needs a Steam account that owns Rust to join.
What you need before you start
Facepunch’s current server guide supports dedicated-server installs on Windows, Linux, and macOS. The guide lists 12 GB of free RAM and 15 GB of free disk space as the starting requirements. Those figures are not a guaranteed player-capacity specification: a larger map, more players, plugins, and other services can increase memory, storage, CPU, and bandwidth requirements. Facepunch specifically says SSD or NVMe storage is highly preferred, and a 6,000-size map uses more memory and disk space than a smaller map.

| Requirement | What the official guidance establishes | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows, Linux, or macOS | The commands and executable names differ by platform; the workflow is the same: install with SteamCMD, configure, launch, test, and expose ports only when needed. |
| Free RAM | 12 GB | This is a baseline amount of free memory, not a promise that every map and population will run well. |
| Free disk space | 15 GB | Leave additional room for map data, logs, updates, backups, and plugins. |
| Storage type | SSD/NVMe highly preferred | Faster storage helps startup, world loading, saves, and update operations. |
| Steam account | Not required to install or run the server | A Steam account that owns Rust is required for anyone who wants to join and play. |
Do not infer a fixed player count from the 12 GB and 15 GB figures. Facepunch does not publish one universal CPU, GPU, bandwidth, or player-count benchmark in this guide. Keep the PC cool, avoid filling the system drive, and account for the game client if you intend to play on the same machine.

How the dedicated server works
A Rust dedicated server is a separate server process, not a private session hosted from the in-game menu. SteamCMD downloads and updates that process. You launch RustDedicated.exe in batch mode, which keeps the server running without opening the normal game interface. The command specifies the game port, map, seed, world size, player limit, name, description, identity, and optional RCON settings.

The server identity is important because it determines where the world and configuration are stored. If you launch with +server.identity "server1", Rust uses rust/server/server1/ for that instance. You can maintain separate identities for different worlds or test configurations without overwriting the main server.
For administration, you can use the server console directly or enable RCON, a remote console protocol. RCON is optional; if enabled, protect it with a strong password and expose it only when remote administration requires it.
Install Rust Dedicated Server with SteamCMD on Windows
The following example uses Windows because the executable and directory layout are explicit. Linux and macOS use the same Steam app ID and configuration concepts, but use their platform-specific SteamCMD package and launch executable.
1. Download SteamCMD
Download and unpack SteamCMD from Valve’s SteamCMD distribution. Put it in a folder you can manage, such as C:SteamCMD. SteamCMD is the installer and updater; it is not the Rust game client.
2. Create a dedicated server directory
Create a directory with enough free space for the server and its future updates. For example:
C:RustMyServer
A short path without spaces makes scripts easier to maintain. The account running SteamCMD and the server must have permission to read and write this directory.
3. Install or update App ID 258550
Run SteamCMD with an anonymous login and Rust’s dedicated-server app ID:

- 5-year limited warranty
SteamCMD.exe +force_install_dir C:RustMyServer +login anonymous +app_update 258550 +quit
The anonymous login is expected here. Facepunch states: “You do NOT need a Steam account to install and run a Rust server, but you will need a steam account with Rust to join and play.” Repeat the update command whenever you intentionally update the server before starting it.
4. Change to the server directory
Open a Command Prompt or PowerShell window in the directory containing the Rust server files. The exact location can vary with the SteamCMD installation, so confirm that RustDedicated.exe is present before launching.
5. Start the server in batch mode
This is a complete example based on Facepunch’s documented command:
RustDedicated.exe -batchmode +server.port 28015 +server.level "Procedural Map" +server.seed 1234 +server.worldsize 4000 +server.maxplayers 10 +server.hostname "Name of Server as Shown on the Client Server List" +server.description "Description shown on server connection window." +server.identity "server1" +rcon.port 28016 +rcon.password CHANGE_THIS +rcon.web 1 -logfile rustserverlog.txt
Replace the hostname, description, seed, world size, player limit, identity, and RCON password with your choices. Never leave a real server using the example password. The -logfile option writes startup and runtime messages to a file that is useful when diagnosing crashes or connection failures.
6. Wait for the readiness message
Startup can take several minutes, especially when generating a new procedural world. Wait for Server startup complete. before testing. Closing the console window stops the server, so use a controlled shutdown when possible rather than ending the process abruptly.
Move persistent settings into server.cfg
Command-line arguments are convenient for the first launch, but persistent settings belong in:
rust/server/server1/cfg/server.cfg
Rust reads this file at startup, and values in it take priority over matching command-line values. Put broad, nonessential settings there so your startup script stays readable. Inside server.cfg, write setting names and values without the leading + or - prefixes used on the launch command.

Rust server ports: which ones matter
Rust uses separate ports for gameplay, server-browser queries, and administration. The protocol matters as much as the number.
| Purpose | Setting/example | Protocol | When to open or forward it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game connection | server.port, 28015 in the example |
UDP | Required for players to connect to the server. |
| Server query/browser visibility | server.queryport |
UDP | Required for reliable server-browser visibility and must be reachable alongside the game port. |
| RCON administration | rcon.port, 28016 in the example |
TCP | Only when you need remote console administration; restrict exposure and use a strong password. |
| Rust+ | Configured Rust+ service port | TCP | Only if you use Rust+ features and have configured the corresponding service. |
server.port defaults to 28015 in the documented example. If you do not set server.queryport, it defaults to one above the greater of server.port or rcon.port. The game and query ports must both be open and must not be identical. Because the default calculation depends on your other ports, check the startup output and your actual configuration rather than assuming the query port.
When troubleshooting, make the game port work first. Add the query port, RCON, and Rust+ connectivity one at a time so a failure has a clear cause.
Connect from the same PC
You do not need router forwarding for a host and players who are all on the same local network. To test from the hosting computer itself:
- Start the dedicated server and wait for
Server startup complete. - Open the Rust game client.
- Press
F1to open Rust’s console. - Enter
connect localhost:28015, replacing 28015 with your chosenserver.port. - Press Enter and wait for the connection.
This test separates server configuration problems from router and public-internet problems. If localhost fails, inspect the server console, identity path, port value, and firewall before changing router settings.

Can you play and host on the same computer?
Yes. The dedicated server and the Rust client can run on the same PC, provided the machine has enough headroom for both. The official 12 GB free-RAM figure applies to the server baseline and does not guarantee smooth gameplay while the client, operating system, voice software, and other applications are also running. A large map or busy server can make same-PC play less comfortable than hosting on a second machine.
Make the server reachable over the internet
For friends outside your home network, the server PC needs a stable private LAN address and your router must forward the required ports to that address. A private address such as 192.168.x.x, 172.16.x.x through 172.31.x.x, or 10.x.x.x is not a public internet address. Remote players need your public IP address plus the forwarded game port.
1. Give the host a stable LAN address
Use your router’s DHCP reservation feature or a carefully configured static address so the server PC does not receive a different private IP after a reboot. Port-forwarding rules tied to an old address silently stop working when the host changes addresses.
2. Allow the server through the PC firewall
Create inbound rules for the actual Rust game and query ports using UDP. If you enable RCON or Rust+, create TCP rules only for the ports you use. The router rule and the operating-system firewall rule must agree on both port number and protocol.
3. Create router forwarding rules
Forward the game port and query port from the router’s public interface to the host’s stable LAN address. Facepunch recommends avoiding a router’s broad “both” or “all” protocol choice when a specific UDP or TCP rule is available. Forward RCON only when remote administration requires it, and do not expose it indiscriminately.
4. Test in stages
- Test
connect localhost:28015on the host. - Test another computer on the same LAN using the host’s private address and game port.
- Test from outside the home network using the public IP and forwarded game port.
- After gameplay works, verify browser visibility through the query port.
- Only then test RCON or Rust+ if you enabled them.
Some routers do not support testing a public address from inside the same network. If an outside friend can connect while the host cannot use the public address, test with localhost or the host’s private address instead of changing a working forward.

Give yourself administrative access
Use the server console or RCON for administration. Facepunch documents the ownerid and moderatorid commands for granting rights. After granting a role, reconnect so the client receives the updated permissions. Keep RCON credentials separate from player passwords, use a strong unique password, and disable or un-forward RCON when you do not need remote administration.

RCON is useful for restarting a server, changing settings, checking status, and moderating without sitting at the host PC. It also creates another network service to secure. A server that is playable through UDP does not need its RCON TCP port exposed to the entire internet.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plugins and modded servers
Oxide/uMod plugins are optional. If you use them, install a package compatible with the current Rust server build and refresh plugin files after server updates. A plugin that worked before an update can stop working when the game changes, so keep backups and read the plugin’s compatibility notes before replacing files.
Be careful with automated startup scripts. Running SteamCMD in a script that updates the server can restore or overwrite plugin files with a vanilla installation, depending on the order of operations. Plan the sequence explicitly: stop the server, back up the identity and plugin data, update the server, verify the mod framework, refresh compatible plugins, and then start the server.

Common failures and how to fix them
The server closes immediately
- Confirm that you launched from the directory containing
RustDedicated.exe. - Check the console and
rustserverlog.txtfor the first error, not only the final shutdown line. - Verify that the identity directory is writable and that the command contains a valid map and numeric seed/world size.
- Run SteamCMD’s update command again if files are missing or an update was interrupted.
Localhost cannot connect
- Wait for
Server startup complete.; world generation can take several minutes. - Use the exact value of
server.port, not an assumed default if you changed it. - Check that another application is not already using the selected port.
- Review the Windows firewall rule for the Rust executable and UDP game port.
LAN players connect, but internet players cannot
- Confirm the host’s private address has not changed.
- Check that the router forwards UDP game and query ports to the correct machine.
- Check the host firewall separately from the router; both layers must permit traffic.
- Give remote players the public IP, not a
192.168.x.x,172.16–31.x.x, or10.x.x.xaddress. - Ask an outside player to test; a local public-IP test may fail on routers without hairpin NAT even when the forward is correct.
The server is not visible in the browser
- Verify that the query port is configured and different from the game port.
- Forward the query port as UDP, not TCP.
- Check the startup output for the effective query-port value when you left
server.queryportunset. - Use a direct connection test to distinguish browser visibility from basic gameplay connectivity.
RCON does not work
- Confirm the client is using the configured TCP
rcon.portand the exact password. - Check the TCP firewall and router rule independently of UDP game rules.
- Do not assume that a working game connection proves RCON is reachable.
- If remote RCON is not essential, remove the forward and administer from the server console.
A plugin broke after an update
- Stop the server and restore the last known-good plugin backup.
- Check whether the plugin supports the new Rust build and mod framework version.
- Update or remove incompatible plugins before inviting players back.
- Review startup scripts so a SteamCMD update does not silently replace your modded files.
Operating the server safely
Keep a repeatable update and backup routine. Before an update, stop the server cleanly and copy the identity directory, especially the world data, configuration, logs, and plugin files. Update with SteamCMD, start the server, and watch for the startup-complete message before announcing it is available.
Use a distinct server identity for experiments so a test map cannot overwrite the live world. Record the seed, world size, ports, identity, and plugin versions in a private administration note. Limit RCON exposure, use unique credentials, and avoid forwarding ports that the server does not use.
Watch memory and disk usage as the population or map size grows. The official 12 GB RAM and 15 GB disk figures are starting guidance, while actual requirements vary with map size, population, plugins, and configuration. If the machine also runs the game client, leave additional headroom instead of treating the baseline as a target to consume completely.
Self-hosting versus renting a managed server
Running the server on your PC gives you direct control, but it also makes your home connection and hardware part of the service. A managed host shifts much of that operational work elsewhere. The right choice depends on whether control or convenience matters more.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Consideration | Host on your own PC | Rent a managed server |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Uses existing hardware, but you may need more RAM, SSD/NVMe storage, or a router upgrade. | Usually has a recurring fee; hardware is supplied by the provider. |
| Files and plugins | Full access to server files, identities, plugins, logs, and wipe timing. | Access depends on the provider’s control panel, file tools, and policies. |
| Networking | You handle a stable LAN address, firewall rules, public IP, and port forwarding. | The provider normally supplies a reachable endpoint, reducing home-router work. |
| Uptime | The gaming PC, power, internet connection, and operating system must remain available. | The provider operates the machine, although outages and maintenance still depend on its service. |
| Scaling | Player growth may require a hardware upgrade and more bandwidth headroom. | You may be able to change a plan or machine without replacing your PC. |
| Privacy and control | World files stay on hardware you control, and you choose update timing. | You trade some physical control for simpler administration. |
Self-hosting is a good fit for a small group that wants control and is comfortable maintaining a PC and router. Renting is more attractive when the host does not want to keep a gaming computer online, cannot configure inbound connections, or expects a population that will outgrow the home machine. If you would rather skip the router work, Godlike.Host offers Rust server hosting with free DDoS protection, up to three free backups a day with restore, and a Pterodactyl-based panel with a task scheduler; see the current plans.
Launch checklist
- Reserve at least 12 GB of free RAM and 15 GB of free disk space; prefer SSD or NVMe storage.
- Install or update Rust App ID 258550 through SteamCMD.
- Choose and record the server identity, map, seed, world size, player limit, hostname, and description.
- Start
RustDedicated.exewith-batchmodeand wait forServer startup complete. - Move persistent values into
rust/server/<server.identity>/cfg/server.cfgwithout+or-prefixes. - Test locally with Rust’s F1 console and
connect localhost:<server.port>. - For internet play, reserve a stable LAN address and forward the UDP game and query ports.
- Open TCP RCON or Rust+ ports only when those services are enabled and needed.
- Back up the identity directory before updates and verify plugin compatibility afterward.
Once the local connection works, the server is listening on the intended ports, and the outside connection test succeeds, your PC is hosting a functioning Rust dedicated server. Continue treating map size, player population, plugins, and same-PC gameplay as resource variables rather than relying on a single universal hardware promise.
