A PS5 cannot run the persistent dedicated-server process for ARK: Survival Ascended. It is the client you play on. To keep a private world online when nobody is playing, rent an ASA server from a host that explicitly supports PlayStation 5, or run the dedicated server on a separate, suitably configured PC. You can also join an official server without renting anything, but you give up private passwords and control over rates and settings.
ASA supports crossplay between PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam and Epic) when the server permits those platforms. The practical setup is therefore: choose where the server will run, select the platform list and map, configure access and rules, then have PS5 players find it through Join Game.

What “hosting on PS5” actually means
There are two different ideas often called hosting:

- Running a dedicated server: a separate process stays online independently of any player. Friends can join while you are away, and the server keeps its world, settings and administrative controls.
The PS5 version is a player client, not a supported place to install and leave the ASA dedicated-server process running. Turning on a menu option cannot convert the console into a persistent host. For a private group, a rented server is normally the least technical route; self-hosting requires another computer and ongoing administration.

Before paying a provider, confirm all of the following for the ASA build you intend to play: PlayStation 5 support, the region in which the server will be located, available player-slot counts, map availability, backup behavior, mod support, restart policy and the current price. Provider features and prices change, so a figure from an older guide should not be treated as a current quote.

For a long-running world, prioritize automated backups, restore access and a clear maintenance policy over a slightly cheaper plan. Confirm whether changing maps or increasing slots later requires a new order or can be done in the existing panel.
How crossplay works on PS5
Nitrado’s hosting documentation, published March 18, 2024, states that cross-platform play is available between PC (Steam and Epic), Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, and that a hosting provider can create crossplay-enabled servers. That is a statement about the game and the provider’s service, not a guarantee that every server has every platform enabled.
Crossplay is controlled by the server’s platform selection. A PlayStation-only server excludes PC and Xbox. A PlayStation-and-Xbox configuration allows those consoles while excluding PC. To include everyone, select PS5, Xbox Series X|S and the supported PC platforms. All players still need compatible game versions, and any installed mod must be usable by every participating platform.

Limiting the list can be useful for a private community. It reduces accidental joins from platforms your group does not use and narrows the mod-compatibility problem. Change the list only during a planned maintenance window, then restart and test the server before everyone logs in.

Set up a private rented server
The exact names and location of controls can change after ASA patches or provider-panel updates. The sequence below describes the settings you should find rather than promising a permanent button label.
- Pick a provider that explicitly lists ASA and PlayStation 5. Do not assume a provider that hosts another ARK edition also supports ASA console crossplay. Check region, slots, map, backups, mod policy, restart behavior and the current recurring price before ordering.
- Create or activate the ASA instance. Select the game edition as ARK: Survival Ascended, not Survival Evolved or another ARK product. Wait for the panel to finish provisioning before changing settings.
- Open the platform or crossplay settings. Select PS5. Add Xbox and the supported PC platforms only if members of your group will use them. A platform left out of this list normally cannot connect, even with the correct password.
- Choose the map. Select a map offered for your ASA build and confirm that the map is available in the selected region and server type. Map catalogs can change as Wildcard releases new content.
- Set the server identity and access. Enter a distinctive server name that friends can search for. Set a password for a private group and share it only with intended players. If the panel offers separate administrator credentials, keep those different from the player password.
- Set the player limit and gameplay rules. Choose the number of simultaneous players your plan permits. Configure PvE or PvP, harvesting and experience rates, taming and breeding rates, difficulty and other exposed ASA settings according to your group’s expectations. Record non-default values so you can restore them after a reset.
- Enable crossplay and save. Nitrado says most official and custom servers have crossplay enabled by default, but a private server still needs its platform and crossplay settings checked. Treat the panel’s saved values as authoritative for your instance.
- Install only compatible mods. Add a mod through the provider’s ASA mod interface when available, and verify that it supports PS5, Xbox and PC if your server includes those platforms. Installing a PC-only mod can stop console players from joining.
- Start or restart the server. Configuration changes commonly require a restart. Wait until the panel reports that the instance is running before searching from the console.
- Test one PS5 connection. On the console, open ASA, choose Join Game, select the appropriate unofficial or custom-server filters, and search the exact server name. Enter the password. Confirm that the map loads and that your intended rates and rules are active before inviting the whole group.
What to record for your group
- Exact server name and region.
- Map and whether the server is PvE or PvP.
- Password and a separate administrator contact.
- Platform list (PS5 only, consoles together, or full crossplay).
- Installed mod names and their required versions.
- Restart or maintenance schedule and the provider’s backup/restore procedure.
Joining from a PS5
- Update ASA to the same current version as the server.
- From the main menu, select Join Game.
- Use the server-browser filters for unofficial or custom servers, rather than searching only the official list.
- Search the exact name, paying attention to spaces, punctuation and duplicate names.
- Confirm the map, region and player count shown in the result.
- Enter the password and connect.
If the server does not appear immediately, wait for its restart to finish, refresh the browser and verify that you are using the correct filter. A newly changed name or platform list may not appear until the instance has restarted and the browser has refreshed.
Mods: the crossplay constraint most groups miss
Studio Wildcard describes ASA’s in-game Mod-bowser as a way to download player-created maps, creatures, items and game modes. Nitrado’s PlayStation release coverage reported more than 250 crossplay mods at launch in November 2023; that was a launch-period count, not a current catalog total.
Mod availability is not uniform. Nitrado notes that PC platforms generally support mods more broadly, while console versions can have limitations. For a mixed PS5, Xbox and PC server:
- Check the mod’s current platform support before installing it.
- Prefer mods explicitly marked as cross-platform or console-compatible.
- Have each console player download the mod through the in-game browser when prompted.
- Keep the server’s mod list and load order documented.
- Remove or update a mod if one platform can no longer download it or connect after an update.
A mod that works on PC alone is not a harmless addition to a mixed server; it can make console clients fail to join. Test a mod with one PS5 client before announcing a large mod pack.

Use a staged mod rollout
Install one mod at a time, restart the instance, and let a PS5 player connect before adding the next. This makes the offending change identifiable if a patch breaks compatibility. Keep a copy of the previous mod list and load order. When a mod is updated, schedule the change, tell players that their first launch may require a download, and keep a backup from before the update.
Self-hosting on a separate PC
Self-hosting is possible as a dedicated-server project, but it is not a PS5 setting. The separate machine must run the ASA server software, remain powered and connected, and be administered independently of the console used to play.
Plan the infrastructure
- CPU and memory capacity: the server must handle the map simulation and the number of players you expect. The ARK Official Community Wiki provides current server-operation guidance; requirements can change with builds and maps.
- Storage: reserve space for the server files, saved worlds, logs, updates and backup copies. Mods and additional maps increase the footprint.
- Network exposure: players outside your home need a reachable service. Firewall and router configuration, address changes and security are your responsibility.
- Power and reliability: configure the machine to restart after maintenance or a crash, and ensure the host can remain online when you are not playing.
- Licensing and account requirements: follow the current ASA dedicated-server documentation and the terms for the platform and build you use. Do not copy an old command line or port recipe without checking that documentation.
Administration you must provide
- Apply game and server updates in a controlled window.
- Back up saved worlds before updates, mod changes and configuration resets.
- Protect administrator credentials and restrict operating-system access.
- Monitor disk space, crashes and unexpected restarts.
- Maintain a rollback plan when a patch or mod breaks the world.
Self-hosting can deliver the greatest control, but it also makes you the provider. If your group does not already maintain a suitable PC and network, a rented ASA instance usually involves less setup and fewer failure points.

Using an official server instead
Official servers are the no-rental option. Studio Wildcard announced that new official servers would launch with bonus rates for a period so players could catch up. Nitrado’s PlayStation-release coverage also described official PlayStation ASA servers and custom crossplay choices, including PlayStation-and-Xbox-only configurations.
Choose an official server when your group accepts the published rules, rates, map availability and maintenance schedule. Choose a private server when you need a password, custom rates, a controlled mod list, a fixed group of players or administrative tools. Official availability and temporary events can change, so check the in-game list rather than relying on an old server name.
Cost and commitment
A rented server is a recurring service rather than a one-time purchase. The amount depends on the provider, region, map, player-slot count, billing term, backup options and any extras. Because plans change, compare the current checkout total and renewal terms instead of relying on a price quoted in an older guide. Check whether taxes, setup fees, storage, mod tools or additional slots are separate charges.

Self-hosting may avoid a monthly hosting invoice, but it is not free in practice. You supply the PC, electricity, storage, internet service and your own time for updates, monitoring and recovery. An official server has no private-hosting charge, but you pay with reduced control: no private password, no guaranteed settings and no promise that a particular map or event remains available.
Troubleshooting connection and setup problems
The PS5 cannot find the server
- Confirm the server is running, not still restarting or updating.
- Use the unofficial/custom filter and search the exact name.
- Check that PS5 is included in the server’s platform list.
- Refresh the browser after a name, map or crossplay change.
- Verify that the console and server are on compatible ASA versions.
PC or Xbox friends can join, but PS5 players cannot
- Recheck that PS5 was selected rather than only PC or Xbox.
- Disable any mod that lacks console support and test again.
- Confirm that the server is configured for crossplay, not a platform-restricted mode.
- Restart after saving platform or mod changes.
Players are rejected after a mod update
- Compare the server’s mod list with the client’s downloaded list.
- Have affected players close and relaunch ASA so the mod browser can update.
- Roll back or remove the changed mod if one supported platform cannot install it.
- Restore a pre-update backup if the world or save became unstable.
The password works for one player but not another
- Share the exact password, including capitalization.
- Make sure the player is entering the password for the intended server, not a similarly named result.
- Reset the password in the panel, save, restart if required and distribute the new value privately.
The server appears, but settings look wrong
- Confirm that the intended map and PvE/PvP mode were saved before the restart.
- Check that rates were changed in the active configuration, not in a template or unused profile.
- Test a simple harvest or experience action and compare it with your written settings.
- If the world was reset, stop making changes and contact the provider or restore the last known-good backup.
Before inviting the whole group
- Connect successfully from one PS5.
- If crossplay is planned, test one Xbox and one PC client.
- Confirm the selected map and basic rates in a fresh session.
- Test every planned mod on each participating platform.
- Verify that a backup exists and that you know how to restore it.
- Write down the provider’s support and maintenance process, or your own self-host recovery steps.
The dependable answer is straightforward: use the PS5 to play, not to run the dedicated process. Rent a PlayStation-compatible ASA server when you want a private, persistent world with the least administration; run the server on another PC when you need maximum control and are prepared to maintain the infrastructure; or join an official server when private configuration is unnecessary.

Can every ASA mod be used by PS5 players?
