To host a Satisfactory multiplayer world, install the dedicated-server software on a Windows or Linux machine, start it, and make it reachable through the host firewall and—if players connect over the internet—your router. The important 2026 caveat is versioning: Coffee Stain’s official announcement index lists Satisfactory 1.2 as released on June 2, 2026, and fixes for 1.2.4.0 dated August 11, 2026, but the port details available here are from the 1.1 documentation. Treat those figures as a starting point to verify against the server build you install, not confirmed 1.2 requirements.
Choose how you will run the server
There are two practical routes: run the dedicated server on a computer you control, or rent a managed game server. Self-hosting avoids a separate hosting subscription and gives you direct control over the machine and its files, but you take responsibility for installation, updates, backups, firewall rules, router configuration, and keeping the machine available. A managed host can reduce the networking and operating-system work, but it adds a recurring cost and may offer less direct control over files or configuration. Confirm that any provider supports the Satisfactory version your group uses before paying; no provider or current 1.2 plan is established here.

The steps below focus on self-hosting because they apply whether the machine is at home or elsewhere. A managed host will have its own installation and access instructions. Check version and machine compatibility first
Before opening ports or following an older setup guide, identify the actual dedicated-server build you are installing. The official Satisfactory announcement index lists the 1.2 release and the 1.2.4.0 fixes. That makes 1.2 the relevant major-version context for a new 2026 setup, but it does not make every older instruction current automatically.

The Satisfactory Wiki dedicated-server page describes Windows 10/11 and Server editions, and Linux distributions such as Debian or Ubuntu, as possible platforms. It is community-maintained guidance, and the available page information does not establish current 1.2 certification. Treat these as candidate systems and check the current server documentation or the software’s own requirements before committing a machine. The same page’s guidance does not list ARM support, so choose a 64-bit x86-64 machine rather than assuming an ARM board or cloud instance will work.
For capacity, the wiki gives a rough community baseline of a recent x86-64 CPU and 8 GB of RAM; it suggests 16 GB for larger saves or more than four players. These are not guaranteed 1.2 minimum or recommended specifications. CPU single-thread performance, player count, and save size affect the load, so a small world with a few players and a heavily developed save should not be assumed to need the same resources. If the machine also runs the game client or other services, account for those workloads separately.
- Use a machine that can remain powered on and connected for the times your group expects to play.
- Check the current server build’s operating-system and resource guidance before installation.
- Keep the save files somewhere you can back up; a server that starts successfully is not a substitute for a recovery plan.
Install the dedicated-server software
The dedicated server is distributed through the Steam client, SteamCMD, and the Epic Games Store, according to the dedicated-server installation guide. The server binary’s storefront does not have to match the client storefront: Steam and Epic PC players can connect to the same dedicated server. For a SteamCMD installation, the server application ID identified by the wiki is 1690800.

Install through a graphical storefront
If you prefer not to use a command line, find and install the dedicated-server software using the Steam client or Epic Games Store on the machine that will host it. Verify that you selected the server software rather than the regular game client, and check that the installed build is compatible with the clients in your group. Exact storefront labels and current 1.2 installation screens can change, so follow the current client interface rather than relying on an old screenshot.
Install with SteamCMD
On Linux, the wiki gives this SteamCMD example:

Choose the directory where you want the server files to live, and make sure the account running SteamCMD can write to it. The command logs in anonymously, installs or updates application 1690800, validates the installed files, then exits. Validation checks the installation; it does not configure the server, open network ports, or prove that the installed version’s network settings match an older guide. The cited example is Linux-specific; use the installation method and path syntax appropriate to your host operating system.
Start it and complete current in-game setup
Once installation completes, launch the dedicated server using the current instructions for that build and wait for it to finish starting before testing a connection. The server-management workflow can involve in-game steps, but the available documentation does not establish a complete 1.2 claim-and-configure sequence, including current menu names or password prompts. Do not rely on a guessed menu path or password setting: consult current official instructions for the exact build and follow its server-manager workflow. Keep the server’s console or logs available while setting it up, because they can help distinguish a startup failure from a network-access problem.

Make the server reachable from outside your network
A server that runs on the host machine is not automatically reachable by friends on the internet. The host firewall must permit the required traffic, and a router using network address translation (NAT) generally needs to forward traffic from an outside port to the correct machine on the local network. Assign the server machine a stable local address or reserve one in the router so a forwarding rule does not later point at a different device.
There is a version-specific limitation to the commonly quoted Satisfactory port instructions. Coffee Stain Studios’ June 2025 Satisfactory 1.1 port-forwarding announcement describes the regular game port, 7777, as using both TCP and UDP. It says reliable messaging uses TCP, with 8888 as the default starting port for a single server. The announcement also describes searching from 8888 across a configurable allocation range of up to 512 ports. These figures describe 1.1; the available documentation does not confirm the corresponding 1.2 port requirements or allocation behavior. Check current 1.2 documentation before creating firewall or router rules, and do not assume that opening a single fixed port is sufficient.

For a home-hosted server, apply the same verified port and protocol rules in both relevant places: the operating system’s firewall and the router’s port-forwarding configuration. Forward to the server computer’s local address, not to the public address or another device. If you host on a machine with a directly reachable public address, router forwarding may not apply, but the host firewall still matters. A managed host may configure network access differently.

When the outside port differs from the server’s port
Some routers or hosting arrangements map an external port to a different internal port. Coffee Stain’s 1.1 announcement warns that remapping can break connections if the server is not told which external reliable-messaging port or range clients should use. It describes the options -ExternalReliablePort= and ExternalPortRangeBegin for supplying that external-port information. These are 1.1 instructions: confirm the current 1.2 syntax and behavior before using them. The external mapping and the server’s advertised external port or range must agree; forwarding alone cannot correct a mismatch.
Test the connection before inviting everyone
Test from a device outside the host’s local network, or ask a friend on another connection to try. A test from the same Wi-Fi may not reveal whether the public route and router forwarding work. Use the current server address and connection procedure described by the game’s current server workflow; do not assume a particular 1.2 menu label or discovery method from older instructions.

- Verify that the server build and client builds are compatible. If the server just updated, make sure the clients are not still on an incompatible build.
- Check the current version’s port instructions, then verify the host firewall allows the required protocols and ports.
- For an internet-hosted home machine, check that the router forwards those ports to the server machine’s current local address.
- If external and internal port numbers differ, verify that the server is configured to advertise the external reliable-messaging port or range where the current version requires it.
- Try a connection from outside the local network and inspect the server logs at the same time. A startup error points to installation or configuration; a server that starts but cannot complete remote connections points toward version mismatch, firewall, forwarding, or external-port configuration.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
The server software will not install or start
Check that you installed the dedicated-server application, not only the game client; that the install directory exists and is writable; and that the machine’s operating system and CPU architecture are supported by the current build. For SteamCMD, rerun the installation command with validate if files may be incomplete. Validation repairs or checks the local installation, but it cannot fix an unsupported operating system or a version mismatch with players.

The server starts, but remote players cannot join
Confirm the required current-version ports and protocols rather than relying on 1.1 numbers as guaranteed 1.2 settings. Check the local firewall and router separately, verify the router targets the right host address, and inspect whether external port remapping is involved. A server can appear healthy locally while its advertised reliable-messaging port is unreachable or inconsistent with NAT mapping.
Some players can join and others cannot
First establish whether the affected players are using compatible PC builds and the same intended server connection method. Storefront mismatch alone should not prevent Steam and Epic PC clients from joining the same dedicated server. If the problem is limited to players outside the home network, revisit public reachability and NAT rules rather than changing server files at random.
The host network uses carrier-grade NAT or has no usable inbound route
Traditional port forwarding only helps when the router has an externally reachable address and can receive inbound traffic. If the internet provider places the connection behind another layer of NAT, a rule on the home router may not expose the server. In that case, ask the provider whether a public inbound address is available, use a suitable managed hosting option, or choose another network arrangement. Do not assume a successful local connection proves that friends on the internet can reach the server.

An always-on world needs basic maintenance as well as a successful first launch. Identify where the current server build stores its save data and configuration before making changes; the exact paths and manager workflow should be confirmed from current instructions rather than guessed. Back up the save before updating the server, changing configuration, or replacing files. Store at least one backup somewhere other than the server’s working directory so that a disk failure or mistaken file operation does not destroy both copies.
When Coffee Stain publishes a new build, update the dedicated server and coordinate with players so their clients can connect to a compatible version. After an update, confirm the server starts, check that the intended save is loaded, and retest access if the build’s networking requirements changed. Keep a note of the build number, save location, port rules, and any external-port mapping you configured; those details make later troubleshooting much faster.
Can Steam and Epic players join the same server?
Yes. The dedicated-server guide says the client storefront and the source of the server binary do not have to match, so Steam and Epic PC players can join the same dedicated server when their game versions are compatible. Console cross-platform support should not be taken as proof that console players can join dedicated servers: the cited server guide says dedicated servers are unavailable for console releases. The Steam store listing describes general cross-platform features, but that is a separate claim from dedicated-server availability on consoles.
