To host SkyFactory 2.5, run the official FTB Presents SkyFactory 2.5 server files for Minecraft 1.7.10 under the Forge loader. You can either rent a server with a one-click SkyFactory installation, or download the exact server archive from the official CurseForge project and run it on your own machine. Whichever route you choose, the server and every player’s client must use the same pack build and mod files.

What you are installing

SkyFactory 2.5 is the FTB Presents SkyFactory 2.5 modpack for Minecraft 1.7.10. It uses Forge rather than the vanilla server. That means a normal Minecraft server jar is not sufficient: the server needs the pack’s mods, configuration files and the Forge server files that belong to the selected pack release.

The newest file listed for the pack is 2.5.9, dated December 10, 2021. Its changelog says the server files were updated to address a security vulnerability. If every player can use that release, it is the sensible starting point. Older builds can still be used when a particular world or client depends on one, but the version must be deliberate and identical on both sides.

Pick the exact file before you begin

CurseForge names the downloadable archives by version. An example is FTBPresentsSkyfactory25-2.5.6-1.7.10.zip. Do not select a file merely because its name contains “SkyFactory 2.5.” Open the official file list, note the complete version number, and download the server archive for that release. Keep the archive name in your notes so you can reproduce the installation later.

Choose hosted or self-hosted

The two methods produce the same kind of server, but they place different responsibilities on you.

Consideration Hosted server Self-hosted server
Initial setup Usually a one-click pack installer, followed by configuration in a web panel. Download, extract, install or verify Forge, accept the EULA and start the server yourself.
Hardware and uptime The provider supplies the machine and normally keeps it online. Your computer, power, operating system and internet connection are responsible for uptime.
Control Convenient controls, but JVM flags and the underlying operating system may be restricted. Full control of Java, Forge, memory, files, backups and operating-system scheduling.
Cost A recurring hosting charge; the amount depends on provider, location, RAM and billing term. No hosting subscription, but you supply hardware, bandwidth and administration.
Best fit Groups that want the quickest route and do not want to expose a home network. Administrators who need version pinning, custom scripts or complete control.

When hosted hosting is the better choice

Use a hosted server when you want friends to connect while your own PC is off, or when router configuration and operating-system maintenance are not desirable. A provider’s one-click catalog may already contain SkyFactory 2.5. Confirm the catalog’s exact pack version before ordering; “SkyFactory” by itself is not enough because other SkyFactory releases use different files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When self-hosting is the better choice

Self-hosting is practical when the machine can remain online, you can administer Java and Forge, and you want direct access to the world folder and server logs. It is also the clearest option for testing an exact historical build. Plan for backups and network configuration before inviting other players.

Hosted setup: install SkyFactory 2.5 from a control panel

  1. Choose a plan with sufficient memory. One provider page recommends 2 GB of RAM for SkyFactory 2.5. Treat that as a starting recommendation from that provider, not a universal minimum. The correct amount depends on view distance, automation, chunk loading, number of players and other settings.
  2. Select the Minecraft and modpack installation tool. In the panel, open the modpack or one-click installer, search for FTB Presents SkyFactory 2.5, and verify the displayed Minecraft version and pack release. If the panel offers only a different SkyFactory edition, do not install it as a substitute.
  3. Pin the release. Select 2.5.9 when it is available and compatible with your group. If you intentionally use another release, write down its full number and require every player to install that same build.
  4. Set the server name and access controls. Give the instance a recognizable name, set an administrator password if the panel provides one, and enable a whitelist before sharing the address publicly.
  5. Start the installation and first boot. The panel should download the pack and create the server files. A first launch can take noticeably longer than later restarts while files and the world are created. A 3–7 minute estimate appears in a guide for SkyFactory 4, not in SkyFactory 2.5 documentation, so do not treat it as a 2.5 promise.
  6. Read the console. Wait for the panel to report that the server has finished starting. If it stops with a Java, Forge or missing-file error, keep the console output; it identifies the failed stage.
  7. Configure memory and Java options only if the panel permits it. Increase memory in measured steps rather than allocating all host RAM. Leave enough memory for the operating system and the panel’s services. The exact Java version for this pack is not confirmed by the available documentation, so follow the Forge build’s stated compatibility rather than copying a version from another SkyFactory guide.
  8. Connect locally first. Use the panel’s console or connection details to join with a client running the identical pack version. Test movement, inventory and world saving before inviting others.
  9. Create a backup. Use the panel’s backup function, or download a copy of the world and configuration directories. Make a backup before changing the pack version, reinstalling Forge or installing additional mods.

Hosted-server checks before you publish the address

  • The panel identifies the instance as FTB Presents SkyFactory 2.5, not another SkyFactory edition.
  • The server release number matches the clients’ release number.
  • The console reaches a ready state without repeating Forge or mod errors.
  • Whitelist and operator permissions are configured deliberately.
  • A restorable backup exists and you know how to download it.

Self-hosted setup: run the official server files

1. Prepare a dedicated server directory

Create a new directory used only for this instance, such as a folder named SkyFactory25-Server. Avoid placing it in a personal documents folder that is automatically synchronized or cleaned. The directory will contain the world, logs, configuration, libraries and launch files, so do not mix it with another Minecraft installation.

Make sure the account running the server can read and write the directory. On a separate machine, arrange remote access before you begin so you are not forced to administer the server through an insecure public service.

  • PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).

2. Download the official archive

Open the official CurseForge page for FTB Presents SkyFactory 2.5 and use its file list. Select the server file for the exact release you want, preferably 2.5.9 if your clients can use it. Do not substitute a third-party “server pack,” a client-only download or an archive from an unverified mirror. Preserve the downloaded zip until the server has been tested; it is useful for rebuilding the instance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Extract without flattening the archive

Extract the zip into the dedicated directory. Check that the expected folders, configuration files and launch scripts are present directly in that directory rather than hidden inside an extra nested folder. If the archive includes a readme, read it before running anything; it may specify the Forge installer, Java compatibility, memory settings or a platform-specific launch script.

4. Install or verify the specified Forge build

SkyFactory 2.5 requires Forge, but the exact Forge build for 2.5.9 is not confirmed by the available documentation. Use the build named by the archive’s readme, installer or launch files. If the server archive already contains Forge libraries and a working launch script, do not replace them with a newer, guessed build. Forge builds are not interchangeable simply because they target Minecraft 1.7.10.

If the package supplies a Forge installer, run that installer in the server directory with its server-install option, then keep the generated libraries and server files together. If it supplies a script, use the script first; it normally references the correct jar and class path. Do not copy a launch command from a SkyFactory 4 tutorial, because that is a different pack and version.

5. Accept the Minecraft EULA

The first server launch normally creates an eula.txt file and stops until the EULA is accepted. Open that file, read the linked agreement, change the acceptance setting only if you agree, save it, and restart. Do not delete the file to bypass the check.

  • COMMUNITY PLAY — Connect with players on community servers, or subscribe to Realms Plus (sold separately) to play with up to 10 friends on a private server.

6. Start the server with the supplied launcher

Run the archive’s Windows batch file, shell script or documented Forge server command from the server directory. Starting it from that directory matters because relative paths are used for libraries, configs and the world. Keep the console visible during the first boot. The process should create a world and eventually report that the server is ready for connections.

If no script is supplied, identify the Forge server jar and follow the archive’s instructions for launching it without a graphical interface. Do not invent a jar filename or Forge build: a command that points at the wrong file will fail even when the rest of the installation is correct.

7. Stop cleanly and restart

Enter stop in the server console when shutting down. A clean stop flushes world data and closes files; killing the process or powering off the machine can corrupt the world. After the first successful boot, stop and start the instance once more to confirm that it can load the saved world.

Make the server reachable

Connecting from the same machine

Test with the local address shown by your operating system or with the local connection option supplied by your launcher. This isolates pack and Forge problems from router problems. If the local client cannot join, fix the installation and version mismatch before changing firewall settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connecting on the same home network

Use the host computer’s private IPv4 address. Permit the Java process through the operating system firewall when prompted, or create a rule for the server process and its listening port. Give the host computer a reserved local address so the connection details do not change after a router restart.

Connecting from the internet

  1. Determine the listening port in server.properties. Minecraft commonly uses port 25565, but use the value actually configured on your server.
  2. Allow that port through the host firewall for the appropriate protocol.
  3. Forward the same port on the router to the host computer’s reserved private address.
  4. Give players the public address and port, never the private address used inside your home.
  5. Test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot. Testing only from inside the same network can produce misleading results because some routers do not support loopback connections.

Do not expose the server administration console or remote desktop directly to the internet. Use a whitelist, strong account credentials and regular backups. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary port forwarding may not work; a hosted server or a private networking solution may then be simpler.

Install the matching client

Every player must install the same Minecraft base version, SkyFactory 2.5 release, Forge-compatible mod list and configuration set as the server. The launcher brand is not the deciding factor: what matters is that the files and versions match. This principle is stated in a guide for SkyFactory 4 rather than specifically for 2.5, so treat it as an operational rule and verify the 2.5 files carefully.

  1. Choose the exact server release recorded during setup.
  2. Install the corresponding client profile for Minecraft 1.7.10.
  3. Launch once to allow the profile to create its directories, then close it.
  4. Install the official client pack for the same release; do not mix files from another SkyFactory edition.
  5. Join only after the server console is ready.

A mismatch commonly appears as a missing-mod message, a registry error, a rejected Forge handshake or a crash while loading the world. Compare the complete release number first; “2.5” without the final digit is not precise enough.

Memory, performance and world growth

SkyFactory worlds can become more demanding as players automate resources, load multiple dimensions and keep machines running. The available provider guidance recommends 2 GB of RAM, but it does not establish a universal minimum for every group or play style. Start with the amount your host or machine can safely provide, then watch server logs, garbage-collection pauses and tick-time warnings while the group builds.

  • Leave operating-system memory available instead of assigning every gigabyte to Java.
  • Keep view and simulation distances reasonable for the number of concurrent players.
  • Remove abandoned chunk loaders and machines that are no longer needed.
  • Restart on a schedule only after saving and backing up; scheduled restarts do not repair a fundamentally mismatched or corrupted installation.
  • Measure after a real play session rather than judging performance from an empty island.

Do not copy a Java memory flag or runtime version from a newer SkyFactory guide. The pack targets Minecraft 1.7.10, and the correct Java compatibility depends on the exact Forge build and operating system. Use the archive’s own instructions and change one setting at a time.

Backups, updates and administration

Back up before every risky change

Stop the server cleanly, copy the world directory and retain the server configuration and mod list. Store at least one copy outside the live server machine. Before reinstalling Forge, changing the pack release or adding a mod, verify that the backup can be opened or restored in a separate directory.

Keep a version record

Record the pack release, Minecraft version, Forge build, Java runtime, memory allocation and any added mods. This turns a future troubleshooting session into a comparison instead of guesswork. The exact Forge and Java values for SkyFactory 2.5 are not established by the available source material, so your own record is especially important.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Updating the pack

Do not overwrite a working instance in place. Stop the server, make a complete backup, install the target release in a separate directory, and test the copy with the backup world. Only switch the live address after the new instance starts without errors and players can connect. If the world depends on an older build, keep that build available for rollback.

Manage permissions

Use a whitelist for a private group, grant operator status only to people who need administrative commands, and remove former players promptly. Treat downloaded mods and scripts as executable software: obtain them from a trusted source and keep the server directory access limited to administrators.

Troubleshooting checklist

Symptom Likely cause Action
Server stops immediately after launch EULA not accepted, incorrect Forge installation or incompatible Java runtime. Read the first error in the console, check eula.txt, confirm the archive’s Forge and Java requirements, and use the supplied launcher.
“Missing mods” or handshake failure Client and server releases or mod lists differ. Compare the complete pack filename and version, then reinstall the client from the matching release.
Players cannot connect, but local testing works Firewall, port forwarding, changing private address or carrier-grade NAT. Test from another network, verify the configured port, reserve the host address and check the router and firewall rules.
World loads but becomes increasingly laggy Growing automation, chunk loaders, memory pressure or excessive view distance. Inspect logs and tick-time warnings, reduce loaded areas, remove unused machines and adjust memory conservatively.
World is missing after a reinstall The new instance points at a different directory or the old world was not copied. Stop the server, identify the correct world folder, restore from backup and confirm the world setting before restarting.
First boot appears frozen Large initial file generation or a startup error that has not been noticed in the console. Watch CPU, disk and console output. Allow time for generation, but stop and investigate if the log repeats an error or the process exits.

Final pre-launch checklist

  • You selected an official server archive and recorded its full release number.
  • The server is FTB Presents SkyFactory 2.5 for Minecraft 1.7.10, not another SkyFactory edition.
  • Forge came from the pack’s documented build or supplied files; no version was guessed.
  • The Java runtime follows the Forge and archive documentation; its version was not assumed from another guide.
  • The EULA is accepted, the server starts cleanly and the world saves after a stop-and-restart test.
  • Clients use the identical pack release and can connect locally.
  • Firewall, router forwarding and whitelist settings have been tested from the intended network.
  • A restorable backup exists before other players join.
