To host SkyFactory One, use the 1.16.5 Forge pack with Java 8, 11, or 14, never Java 16. Download the server files for the current pack release (1.0.7 was the latest listed release on June 15, 2024), allocate roughly 5–8 GB of RAM for a small server, and set topography-preset=void in server.properties before the first world is created. You can run the files on your own machine or select a game host that installs SkyFactory One from a control panel.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
Confirm that you have the right modpack
Several similarly named packs use different Minecraft and Java versions. This guide is specifically for SkyFactory One, not the original SkyFactory pack and not SkyFactory 5.

Choose between self-hosting and a managed server
Self-hosting on your own computer
Self-hosting gives you control over the files, Java runtime, backups and upgrades. It also means your computer must remain available whenever people want to play, and you are responsible for the operating system, firewall, network access and troubleshooting. This route is practical for a private group if the machine has sufficient memory and a reliable connection.
#1 Best Overall
Using a game-server provider
A managed provider supplies a control panel, persistent storage and a server process that can run while your personal computer is off. Several providers list SkyFactory One as a one-click modpack, including BisectHosting, ScalaCube, MTXServ, Apex and Stickypiston. The available material does not establish current prices, player limits or contractual terms for any of them, so compare those details directly on the provider’s current page.
| Consideration | Self-hosted | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| Installation control | Full control of Java, Forge and files | Panel controls the installation; advanced file access varies |
| Maintenance | You handle updates, backups and failures | Provider handles the machine and panel; you still manage the pack and world |
| Availability | Your computer must stay on and reachable | Designed to remain online independently of your computer |
| Cost information | No hosting fee, but your hardware and electricity are used | Prices and included resources were not established; verify before ordering |
| Best fit | A technically comfortable owner with a small private group | Players who want a simpler, persistent server |
Requirements for SkyFactory One
Minecraft and Forge
Use Minecraft 1.16.5 and the Forge loader supplied for SkyFactory One. A client running a different Minecraft version, loader or pack release will not be an equivalent installation. Everyone joining should install the same SkyFactory One release as the server.
Java
The pack listings state that Java 8, Java 11 and Java 14 are supported for clients and servers, while Java 16 is not supported. Java selection is the most common cause of a server that refuses to start, exits immediately or reports class-version errors. Check the runtime that the server process will actually use, not merely the Java version installed somewhere on the computer.
From a terminal or command prompt, run:
java -version
If the output shows Java 16, install a supported Java 8, 11 or 14 runtime and configure the launch script, service or hosting panel to use that executable. If several Java versions are installed, an administrator may need to select the supported one explicitly in the operating system or panel. Do not assume that a newer Java release is safer for this older pack.
Memory
CurseForge recommends at least 4 GB for a client. Server guidance in the available hosting material is approximately 5–8 GB, with additional memory sensible for a larger group or a public server. Treat these as planning figures rather than a guaranteed player capacity: actual use depends on the world, loaded chunks, automation and number of players.
- Reserve enough memory for the operating system and other applications; do not assign every gigabyte to Minecraft.
- Start near the lower end of the server range for a private test, then increase the allocation if the panel or launch logs show memory pressure.
- For a friends or public server, plan beyond the basic range when the machine allows it, because more simultaneous activity increases load.
Self-hosted installation: a safe sequence
1. Select and verify the pack release
- Open the current SkyFactory One listing on CurseForge and identify the newest release that provides server files. The release recorded here is 1.0.7, published June 15, 2024.
- Download the server package for that release rather than assembling a client installation by hand.
- Record the exact release number. Use that same number when installing clients and when diagnosing a connection or mod mismatch.
The available listing also shows server files for 1.0.5. Do not mix files from 1.0.5 and 1.0.7 unless the pack maintainer explicitly says they are interchangeable.
2. Prepare a clean server directory
Create a dedicated folder with write permission for the account that will run the server. Keep the downloaded archive and all generated files together. A clean directory makes it easier to identify which files belong to the selected release and reduces the chance of loading an older world or an old Forge installation accidentally.
3. Install the supported Java runtime
Install Java 8, 11 or 14, then confirm the command used by the server reports that version. If your operating system has multiple Java installations, configure the start script or service with the full path to the supported executable. Java 16 must not be used for either the client or the server.
4. Install Forge for Minecraft 1.16.5
Use the Forge installer and server files referenced by the current SkyFactory One listing. The exact installer prompts and file names can change, so follow the instructions on that official pack page instead of copying a command intended for another Minecraft release. Confirm that the resulting server uses Forge for 1.16.5 before proceeding.
Do not add unrelated mods while bringing the pack online. First establish a clean, matching installation; additional changes make it harder to tell whether a failure comes from Java, Forge, the pack or a third-party modification.
5. Configure the void world before first launch
Open server.properties in a text editor and add this setting:
Rank #3
- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
topography-preset=void
ATLauncher identifies this property as the setting that creates the SkyBlock world. Apply it before the first world is generated, save the file, and then start the server. A normal terrain world means the setting was absent, misspelled, edited after generation or applied to a different server directory.
An alternative setting sometimes suggested elsewhere is level-type=voidworld. The source and compatibility of that suggestion are not established here, so do not substitute it for the ATLauncher property when setting up SkyFactory One.
6. Allocate memory in the launch method you use
Set the server’s minimum and maximum memory in its start script, service definition or hosting panel. Use the 5–8 GB planning range for a small server, leaving operating-system headroom. If your machine cannot provide that amount while remaining responsive, reduce the number of other applications first or use a managed host with an appropriate plan rather than assigning all available memory blindly.
7. Start once and inspect the result
- Launch the server with the supported Java executable and the Forge 1.16.5 installation.
- Watch the console for a clean completion rather than closing the window as soon as files begin appearing.
- Confirm that the generated world is a void SkyBlock environment.
- Stop the server using its normal stop action before editing configuration or copying backups.
- Install the identical SkyFactory One release on a test client and connect before inviting other players.
Network and firewall configuration depends on your operating system, router and internet provider. Complete those platform-specific steps separately, and test access from outside the host machine; a server that works only for the local computer is not yet ready for friends.
Installing through a managed hosting panel
Panel-based modpack installation
Control-panel labels differ, but the documented Apex workflow illustrates the sequence:
Rank #4
- Now Minecraft lovers can play a special version of UNO!
- Same as Basic UNO but features Minecraft characters and includes special Creeper rule card. Draw this card and the other players have to draw three more cards from the pile!
- The goal is to get rid of all the cards in your hand.
- First player or team to 500 wins.
- When you're down to one card, don't forget to yell "UNO"!
- Open the panel’s Game File section.
- Search for SkyFactory One.
- Choose the required pack release under Change Version.
- Select Generate New World.
- Choose Restart Now to apply the installation and create the world.
Use the same release number on the server and every client. If the panel offers several SkyFactory entries, select SkyFactory One for Minecraft 1.16.5, not the original 1.7.10 pack or SkyFactory 5 for 1.20.1.
Verify Java and memory in the panel
Even when the panel installs the modpack automatically, check its Java selector and memory allocation. Choose Java 8, 11 or 14 and avoid Java 16. Allocate approximately 5–8 GB for a small server, increasing the allocation only when the machine or plan has adequate headroom and actual workload requires it.

Protect an existing world
Some panels provide a “fully reinstall” action. MTXServ’s documented warning is that a full reinstall wipes server data. Use that action only for a genuinely fresh server or after making a verified backup. For an existing world, prefer the panel’s normal version-change or restart controls and read its data-retention warning before confirming.
First-launch checklist
- The server and clients all show SkyFactory One, Minecraft 1.16.5 and Forge.
- The server process is using Java 8, 11 or 14, not Java 16.
- The selected pack release is identical on every installation; 1.0.7 is the latest release recorded here.
topography-preset=voidwas saved in the active server’sserver.propertiesbefore world generation.- The server has roughly 5–8 GB allocated for a small group, with memory left for the operating system.
- The first world loads as a void SkyBlock world rather than ordinary terrain.
- A test client can connect before the server is shared more widely.
- A backup plan exists before upgrades, reinstallations or major configuration changes.
Troubleshooting common failures
The server exits immediately or reports a Java/class-version error
Check java -version and the Java path used by the actual launch command or panel. Replace Java 16 with Java 8, 11 or 14, then restart. Installing a supported runtime without changing the server’s selected executable does not fix the problem.
The world is not a void SkyBlock
Stop the server, open the server.properties in the directory that the active process uses, and verify the exact line topography-preset=void. The property must be present before generation. If a world was already created with the wrong settings, changing the property alone may not alter that existing world; preserve any data you need and use the host’s documented new-world or regeneration procedure.
Best Value
Players receive a mod or version mismatch
Compare the Minecraft version, Forge loader and SkyFactory One release on the client and server. A client built for the original SkyFactory pack or SkyFactory 5 is not compatible with SkyFactory One. Do not resolve a mismatch by mixing individual files from different releases.

Check the memory allocation and leave headroom for the operating system. The 4 GB figure published for clients is not a server capacity guarantee; server guidance is approximately 5–8 GB, with more appropriate for a larger group. Stop unnecessary applications, test with fewer simultaneous players and increase the allocation only within the machine or hosting plan’s limits.
A reinstall removed the world
Some panel “fully reinstall” actions erase all server data. Treat the world as recoverable only if you have a separate backup. On MTXServ, the available guidance specifically warns that full reinstall wipes data, so use it only on a fresh server or after confirming that the backup can be restored.
The server works locally but friends cannot join
The pack installation is only one part of connectivity. Check the host machine’s firewall, router or provider networking controls and the address supplied to players. Test from a different network, then inspect the server console for connection attempts. Exact network settings vary by environment and should be taken from your operating system or provider’s current documentation.
Keeping the server maintainable
Document the working combination
Write down the SkyFactory One release, Minecraft version, Forge version, Java version, memory allocation and the fact that topography-preset=void was used. This short record prevents accidental drift when the server is moved to another machine or recreated after a failure.
Change one variable at a time
When troubleshooting, do not upgrade the pack, switch Java and add mods simultaneously. Start from the known-good combination, change one item, restart, and record the result. This is especially important for an older 1.16.5 pack whose Java support excludes Java 16.
Back up before upgrades or resets
Stop the server cleanly, copy the world and configuration files to storage outside the active server directory, and verify that the backup can be read. A backup made immediately before a version change or world regeneration gives you a recovery point if the panel’s operation is destructive.
Which route should you use?
- Choose self-hosting if you can install and select a supported Java version, reserve about 5–8 GB of memory, manage networking and keep the machine available.
- Choose a managed host if you want a persistent server and a panel that can install SkyFactory One, while accepting recurring provider costs and provider-specific limits.
- Delay inviting players until a clean client has joined the exact server release and the generated world is confirmed to be void SkyBlock.
The reliable baseline is straightforward: SkyFactory One on Minecraft 1.16.5 with Forge, Java 8/11/14, the matching server files, adequate memory and topography-preset=void set before world creation. Keeping those five pieces aligned prevents most setup failures.
