The reliable way to host Society: Sunlit Cobblemon is to run the release-matched CurseForge server pack on Minecraft: Java Edition 1.20.1 with Forge. A managed Minecraft host is quickest because it supplies the machine, panel and public address; self-hosting gives you full control but makes you responsible for Java, files, networking, security, backups and maintenance.

What you are hosting

Society: Sunlit Cobblemon is a modpack for Minecraft: Java Edition. The guides covering the pack identify Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge as the required platform. The server and every connecting client must use the same pack release, not merely the same pack name. A different release can change mods, registries and configuration files, producing missing-mod, registry or handshake errors.

The ordinary launcher or client archive is not a dedicated server. For a self-hosted installation, download the CurseForge archive explicitly labeled SERVER-PACK for the release you selected. The server pack contains the files and startup material intended for a headless server; copying a client ZIP into a server directory is a common cause of failed starts.

Choose managed hosting or self-hosting

Both approaches run the same Forge 1.20.1 server software. The difference is who operates the computer and network around it.

Consideration Managed Minecraft host Self-hosted machine
Setup Usually an instance, modpack search and install button in a web panel. You download the server pack, install Java, extract files and run the supplied startup script.
Always-on availability The provider supplies a data-center machine intended to stay online. You must keep the computer powered, connected and available whenever friends want to play.
Network work The panel normally supplies a public address and handles the listening port. You reserve a stable local address, allow Java through the firewall and forward TCP 25565 on your router.
Control Convenient controls, but storage layout, operating system and some network policies are provider-defined. Direct access to scripts, files, operating-system settings, storage and network policy.
Backups and recovery May include scheduled backups and restore controls; check exactly what the plan retains. You design, schedule and test your own world and configuration backups.
Best fit Friends who want a joinable server quickly, an always-on world or minimal router administration. An operator who already maintains a Windows or Linux computer and wants complete technical control.

Choose managed hosting if your priority is getting a working address to your players with the fewest infrastructure tasks. Choose self-hosting if you are comfortable maintaining Java and the operating system, diagnosing firewall and router behavior, and restoring files when an update goes wrong.

Memory, CPU and storage planning

No official RAM requirement from the Society pack author is established in the available material. The figures below are third-party provider guidance, so treat them as planning points rather than guarantees. Modded-server demand changes with player count, exploration, chunk generation, entity activity and other mods in the pack.

Published figure Provider and year How to interpret it
5,000 MB minimum CreeperHost, 2026 A provider plan floor; not proof that every public workload will run well at that allocation.
6 GB recommended FadeHost, 2026 Guidance for a group playing online.
At least 6 GB; 8 GB recommended Mado Hosting, accessed October 15, 2026 Pack-specific hosting guidance for Society: Sunlit Cobblemon.
8 GB minimum OuiHeberg, 2026 A provider-stated minimum.
10 GB or more Game Host Bros, 2026 Presented as suitable for a public server.

A sensible starting plan is approximately 6–8 GB for a small private group and 10 GB or more for a public server. Allocate only what the physical machine can spare: Java, the operating system, the server process, disk caching and backups all need resources. Increasing the Java allocation cannot compensate for a weak CPU, a full disk or slow storage. Monitor memory, CPU and disk while players are exploring, because an idle server can look healthy immediately before a heavy burst of terrain generation.

Leave free disk space for the world, logs, crash reports, a second release directory and at least one usable backup. A rollback is much easier when the pre-update copy remains on the same machine or, preferably, on separate storage.

Managed-host installation

Panels differ in wording, but the pack-specific workflow is consistent. The following sequence avoids the most common version and allocation mistakes.

  1. Create a Minecraft Java instance. In the provider panel, create a new Minecraft Java server rather than a Bedrock instance or a generic application container.
  2. Open the modpack browser. Search for Society: Sunlit Cobblemon. Some panels list the same pack under the alternate name Society: Sunlit Valley; some also expose the creator name Chakyl. Check the pack description and game version before installing.
  3. Select one release and record it. Write down the exact release number shown by the panel. Use that same number when instructing every player. Do not let the server silently update while clients remain on the older release.
  4. Set memory before first start. Use the planning ranges above, then leave headroom for the host’s operating system and Java process. A private group can begin around 6–8 GB; public use generally deserves 10 GB or more.
  5. Install the pack. Let the panel download the server files. A pack-specific installer should configure Forge and Minecraft 1.20.1 automatically; verify those values in the instance details before starting.
  6. Accept the EULA if prompted. Read the Minecraft EULA and accept it only if you agree to its terms. The server will not complete normal startup until the required EULA setting is present.
  7. Start and watch the console. Wait for the console to report that the server is ready before anyone connects. A panel showing “running” while Forge is still loading is not the same as a joinable world.
  8. Restrict a private world. Enable the panel’s whitelist controls and add each player’s Minecraft username. Create or assign an operator account only to people who need administrative commands; do not give operator status to everyone by default.
  9. Share the supplied address. Give players the host-provided address and port exactly as displayed. They should connect only after the startup messages indicate readiness.

Before inviting a large group, make a backup and perform a short test with one client. Walk a few hundred blocks, open inventories and inspect the console for repeated errors. This catches an incomplete installation before the world becomes valuable.

Self-hosting on your own Windows or Linux machine

Self-hosting is not just copying a world folder. You are operating a Forge server, a Java runtime and an internet-facing service. Keep each release in its own directory so a failed update can be reversed without reconstructing files.

1. Select and document the release

Decide which Society: Sunlit Cobblemon release the group will use. Record the pack release, Minecraft version and Forge version in a small text file alongside the server. Ask every player to install that exact release before troubleshooting anything else.

2. Download the correct server archive

From the release’s CurseForge files, choose the archive explicitly labeled SERVER-PACK. Do not download the ordinary client ZIP and do not assume that a similarly named file is interchangeable. If the release includes a README, keep it in the server directory; its startup instructions are authoritative for that release.

3. Extract into a dedicated directory

Create a new directory for the release, such as a versioned folder that is separate from your old server. Extract the archive there without merging it into another Forge installation. Separate directories preserve the old files for rollback and make it clear which pack is currently running.

4. Install the documented Java runtime

Hosting documentation cited for this pack identifies Java 17 for Minecraft 1.20.1. That is third-party hosting guidance, not an official pack-author requirement, so follow the release README if it specifies a different compatible runtime. Confirm which Java executable the startup script will use; a machine can have several Java versions installed, and the wrong one can cause an immediate launch failure.

5. Use the supplied startup script

Run the Windows or Linux startup script included with that server pack and follow its README. Do not paste a command copied from an unrelated Forge pack: arguments, libraries and first-run steps can differ. If the script creates files on its first run, stop and read any generated instructions before proceeding.

6. Accept the EULA and restart

If the first run creates an EULA file, read the Minecraft EULA and change the setting only if you agree to it. Start the script again and wait for a clean Forge startup. The first launch can take longer while libraries and configuration files are prepared.

7. Stop cleanly before making changes

Use the server console’s normal stop command or the panel equivalent. Never copy a live world, replace mods or edit server.properties while the process is writing files. A clean stop reduces the chance of a partially written region or configuration file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Prepare the local network

Give the server computer a stable local address, either with a router DHCP reservation or a carefully configured static address. Allow the Java runtime through the host operating system’s firewall. Forward TCP port 25565 on the router to that local address. If you change the computer’s local address later, the forwarding rule can silently point at the wrong machine.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

9. Test from outside the home network

Use a phone hotspot or another external connection to test the public address. A test from the same LAN can succeed through local routing even when internet forwarding is broken. If outside connections fail despite a correct firewall and forwarding rule, check whether the internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT; in that situation, the home router may not have a publicly reachable address and ordinary port forwarding will not work.

Router and firewall checklist

  • Reserve a stable local IP address for the server computer.
  • Create a router rule for TCP 25565 directed to that address. Do not forward the port to a different device.
  • Allow the Java executable used by the server through the operating-system firewall on private and, where appropriate, public profiles.
  • Confirm that the server is listening on the intended port in server.properties; do not change the port unless you also update the forwarding rule and the address shared with players.
  • Test from a network that is not your home LAN.
  • Investigate carrier-grade NAT if the router’s internet address does not match the address visible from outside and no forwarding test succeeds.

Only open the service you need. Keep remote administration protected, use strong account credentials and avoid exposing unrelated services from the same machine.

What players must install and how they connect

Every player should install Minecraft: Java Edition 1.20.1, Forge and the identical Society: Sunlit Cobblemon release selected for the server. The launcher profile should point to that Forge installation and pack files; mixing a newer or older release with the server is not a supported workaround.

  • Managed server: use the public address and port shown by the host panel.
  • Self-hosted player outside the LAN: use the home network’s public address and the forwarded port.
  • Player on the same LAN: use the server computer’s local address when appropriate; the public address may not work on routers without NAT loopback.

Wait until the server has completed startup before connecting. If a client reports missing mods, a registry mismatch or a handshake failure, first compare the pack release, Minecraft version and Forge version character for character on both sides.

Backups, updates and rollback

Modpack updates can alter blocks, items, registries or world-generation behavior. Treat an update as a change to the world, not as a harmless application patch.

  1. Announce a maintenance window and stop the server cleanly.
  2. Make a complete backup of the world, configuration, scripts and any server-specific files. Keep a copy away from the live directory.
  3. Keep the old release directory intact. Do not overwrite it with the new archive.
  4. Install the new SERVER-PACK in a separate directory and apply only the documented migration steps.
  5. Start the new release with no players connected. Check the console, load the world and inspect important areas.
  6. Connect one test client using the same release. Only then invite the rest of the group.

If the update damages the world or produces startup errors, stop the new server, restore the pre-update backup and return to the old directory. Confirm that all clients are back on the old release before resuming play. Keep the old files until the replacement has been proven during normal exploration.

Performance and chunk-generation practices

Exploration can be more demanding than a quiet base because new terrain must be generated, saved and delivered to several players. If the hosting panel or pack documentation supports chunk pre-generation, perform it during a maintenance window before inviting players to explore widely. Game Host Bros is cited by the pack guides as recommending pre-generation to avoid expensive terrain work during live play.

  • Watch CPU, memory, disk activity and the server console while players travel, not only while the server is idle.
  • Pre-generate a planned area rather than attempting an unlimited world-size job.
  • Keep backups before large generation runs; a full disk or interrupted process can affect the world.
  • Increase memory only when monitoring shows memory pressure and the machine has unused physical RAM. More allocation does not fix CPU saturation, storage latency or network problems.
  • Use a whitelist for a private group so unexpected players cannot create additional load.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The server will not start

  • Verify that the files came from the release-specific SERVER-PACK, not the client archive.
  • Confirm Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge are the versions required by that release.
  • Check the Java runtime. Hosting guidance commonly identifies Java 17 for this pack, but the release README takes precedence.
  • Make sure the startup script is being run from its own directory and that the machine has enough available memory and disk space.
  • Read the first meaningful error in the console rather than repeatedly restarting. Change one variable at a time so you know which correction worked.

An OutOfMemoryError appears

Measure usage during the activity that triggers the error. For a small private server, begin in the 6–8 GB range; a public server may need 10 GB or more according to provider guidance. Increase the allocation only within the machine’s physical limits and leave room for the operating system, Java overhead and backups. If the error remains, investigate a runaway process, disk exhaustion or a mod-specific crash instead of allocating all system RAM to Java.

Players cannot connect

  • Confirm the server console reached its ready state.
  • Compare the address and port with the value shown by the managed panel or the self-hosted router rule.
  • Check that Java is allowed through the firewall and that TCP 25565 forwards to the correct local address.
  • Test from an external network. A successful same-LAN test does not prove internet access.
  • Check for carrier-grade NAT when forwarding appears correct but the service is unreachable from outside.
  • Verify that each client uses the identical pack release, Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge.

An update breaks the world

Stop the server, restore the pre-update backup and run the previously working release from its preserved directory. Put every client back on that release. Do not keep experimenting on the only copy of the world; make a fresh backup before testing another migration.

Lag occurs when players explore

Observe resources during exploration and chunk generation. Pre-generate chunks during a maintenance window when supported, reduce the size of the initial exploration area and verify that the disk is not full or saturated. If the machine is short on CPU or storage performance, adding RAM alone will not remove the bottleneck.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to evaluate a managed host

If you choose a provider, compare operational details rather than a headline slot count. Confirm each item before paying or migrating an existing world.

Question to verify Why it matters
Is the exact Society: Sunlit Cobblemon or Society: Sunlit Valley release available? A generic Forge installer may leave you assembling files manually and increases version-mismatch risk.
Does the panel configure Forge and Minecraft 1.20.1? The pack depends on that compatibility combination.
How much RAM is allocated, and can it be upgraded? Player count and exploration can outgrow an initial 6–8 GB allocation.
What backup schedule, retention and restore controls are included? A backup that cannot be restored or is overwritten too quickly is not a dependable rollback plan.
Is there a one-click modpack installer with a visible release number? Clear version selection helps keep clients and server synchronized.
How are the public address and port supplied? Players need a stable endpoint, and you should know whether a port change is possible.
Where is the machine located and how responsive is support? Geographic distance affects latency; responsive support matters when a modpack update fails.
What is the total recurring cost? Memory upgrades, extra storage and backup add-ons can change the real monthly price.

Published provider recommendations are not an official performance guarantee. Before committing a public community, start with a test world, watch resource use under representative exploration and verify that backups can be downloaded and restored.

A practical launch checklist

  • Server and clients agree on the same Society release.
  • Minecraft Java Edition is 1.20.1 and Forge is installed.
  • A release-specific CurseForge SERVER-PACK is being used for self-hosting.
  • Java matches the release documentation, with Java 17 commonly identified by hosting guidance for 1.20.1.
  • Memory is planned at approximately 6–8 GB for a small private group or 10 GB or more for public use, with system headroom.
  • The EULA has been read and accepted where required.
  • The server has completed startup and a clean test connection works.
  • A private server has a whitelist and limited operator access.
  • Self-hosted servers have a stable local address, firewall permission and TCP 25565 forwarding.
  • An external-network connection test has succeeded.
  • A tested backup exists before the first major exploration session or update.

Choosing the right setup

For most groups that simply want to play, a managed Minecraft Java instance with the exact Society: Sunlit Cobblemon release is the shortest path: install through the panel, allocate adequate memory, wait for the Forge console to finish and share the supplied address. Self-hosting is the better fit when you already administer a suitable Windows or Linux machine and value direct control over files, scripts, storage and network policy. Whichever route you choose, release matching, a release-specific server pack, conservative memory planning, external connectivity testing and recoverable backups determine whether the server remains playable after the first update or burst of exploration.
