To make charcoal in Minecraft, smelt any wooden log or stripped log in a furnace. Place the log in the furnace’s top input slot, add planks, sticks, a wooden tool, or another valid fuel to the bottom slot, wait for the smelt to finish, and take the charcoal from the output slot. The process takes 10 seconds per item in the cited beginner tutorial, and each charcoal can burn for 80 seconds—enough to smelt up to eight items.

What charcoal does in Minecraft
Charcoal is a renewable early-game fuel made from wood rather than mined from underground. It is especially useful when you have trees nearby but have not found coal yet. Because logs can be gathered repeatedly, a small forest can supply a continuing stream of furnace fuel.

Charcoal is not made in the crafting grid. It is produced by smelting a log in a furnace, and the furnace must have fuel in its separate fuel slot. The log is the item being processed; the starter fuel is consumed to provide the heat.
After you have one charcoal, you can use it to smelt more logs. That makes the first successful furnace cycle the important hurdle: once the initial charcoal is available, wood can feed a renewable production loop.

What you need before you start
- A wooden log: Any log can be smelted into charcoal. Stripped-log variants are accepted as well.
- A furnace: The log goes in the top input slot and fuel goes in the bottom slot.
- Starter fuel: Planks and sticks are convenient first choices. Wooden tools and other valid furnace fuels also work.
- An empty output slot: Leave room to collect the finished charcoal so the smelting cycle can complete normally.
You do not need to find coal for this recipe. If you can collect wood and operate a furnace, you can make charcoal before mining for any underground fuel.
How to make charcoal, step by step
- Collect a log. Chop down a tree and pick up one of its wooden logs. A stripped log also works if you have used an axe to strip the bark.
- Craft and place a furnace. Put the furnace somewhere accessible, ideally near your storage and the trees you are harvesting.
- Open the furnace. You will see an upper input slot, a lower fuel slot, and an output slot.
- Load the log. Place the regular or stripped log in the upper input slot.
- Add starter fuel. Put planks, sticks, a wooden tool, or another valid fuel in the lower slot. A furnace will not smelt the log if this slot is empty, even when the input item is correct.
- Wait for the smelt. The beginner tutorial cited for this process gives a time of 10 seconds for each item. The furnace’s progress indicator shows when the operation is complete.
- Collect the charcoal. Move the finished item from the output slot into your inventory. You can now use that charcoal as fuel for another batch or for other charcoal recipes.
Minecraft’s official instructional summary is short: chop down a tree, put the logs in a furnace, and wait a few moments. The separate fuel slot is the detail that most often explains why a first attempt appears not to work.

The cited Minecraft Wiki beginner tutorial lists 10 seconds per smelted item. That means the number of logs in the input queue determines the processing time, while the fuel item determines how long the furnace can continue burning.
| Batch | Smelting time at 10 seconds per item | Fuel planning |
|---|---|---|
| 1 log | 10 seconds | Use only enough starter fuel to cover the first operation when possible. |
| 4 logs | 40 seconds | A small starter load is enough; collect the output before adding more if your fuel is limited. |
| 8 logs | 80 seconds | One charcoal’s published burn time matches this eight-item batch. |
| More than 8 logs | Multiply the item count by 10 seconds | Add fuel in stages or use enough charcoal to cover the complete queue. |
One charcoal burns for 80 seconds and can smelt up to eight items. Matching the amount of fuel to the size of the batch reduces unused burn time: if only one or two items remain, adding a full long-burning fuel item may leave heat that cannot be used.
How to bootstrap a charcoal supply when you have no coal
Use wood for the first cycle
Before the first charcoal is ready, use a small amount of wood-based fuel. Planks and sticks are easy to obtain immediately after cutting a tree, and wooden tools that are no longer needed can also serve as furnace fuel. Put the starter fuel in the lower slot and at least one log in the upper slot.

Reserve the first charcoal for expansion
When the output appears, place that charcoal in the fuel slot with more logs in the input slot. A single charcoal can smelt up to eight items, so an eight-log batch uses its published burn time efficiently. Keep gathering logs while the furnace runs, but avoid filling more input than your available fuel can finish.

Run a measured loop
- Gather a batch of logs.
- Place the logs in the furnace input slot.
- Add one charcoal for up to eight queued items, or add the amount required for a larger batch.
- Collect the charcoal output and set aside the amount you want to use for the next cycle.
- Repeat while you have access to trees and a functioning furnace.
This approach keeps the furnace operating without requiring a coal vein. It also makes your fuel stock predictable: count the logs first, then match the number of charcoal pieces to the work you intend to smelt.
What charcoal is used for
Furnace fuel
Charcoal’s central use is powering furnaces. The published figure of 80 seconds per charcoal and up to eight smelted items makes it a practical renewable fuel for food, building materials, glass, stone, and other furnace jobs. The exact item being smelted does not change the charcoal’s stated burn duration; the useful planning question is how many items are in your queue.
Torches and soul torches
The official Minecraft guidance lists charcoal as an ingredient for torches and soul torches. These light sources are useful when exploring caves, marking paths, protecting a base, or lighting work areas before you have a large mined-coal supply.
Campfires
Charcoal is also listed for campfire crafting. Campfires provide a persistent fire source for practical and decorative builds, so a renewable charcoal supply can support early settlement projects.

Fire charges
The official list also includes fire charges among charcoal’s uses. If you are preparing fire-based items, charcoal lets you rely on gathered wood instead of waiting to find coal underground.
These uses give charcoal value beyond simply keeping one furnace running. Decide how much to reserve for lighting and crafting before spending your entire supply on a large smelting queue.
Charcoal, coal, and other wood fuels
Charcoal and coal serve similar furnace roles, but they come from different resource loops. Coal requires mining, while charcoal requires trees, a furnace, and an initial fuel item. Wood fuels are available immediately but may be better saved for construction or tools once charcoal production is established.
| Comparison point | Charcoal | Coal | Planks, sticks, and wooden tools |
|---|---|---|---|
| How you obtain it | Smelt a log or stripped log in a furnace. | Obtained by mining coal; a burn figure is not specified in the cited material. | Crafted or collected from wood and usable as starter furnace fuel. |
| Renewability | Renewable wherever trees can be grown or gathered. | Depends on available coal ore; the cited material does not establish a renewable supply. | Renewable through continued wood gathering. |
| Setup effort | Requires a furnace, a log, and starter fuel. | Requires access to coal ore and mining equipment or a found deposit. | Available before charcoal, but must be gathered or crafted for each early batch. |
| Published burn capacity | 80 seconds, up to eight smelted items per charcoal. | Not stated in the cited references for this guide. | Varies by fuel item; no single figure applies to all wood fuels. |
| Best early-game role | Long-term fuel and light-item ingredient when trees are easier to reach than coal. | Convenient mined fuel when a coal supply is already available. | Starter fuel for the first charcoal cycle. |
Do not treat charcoal as automatically the most efficient wood-based fuel in every edition. The cited beginner tutorial notes that Bedrock Edition slabs can be more efficient than converting wood into charcoal in some situations. Edition-specific fuel comparisons therefore depend on the item, the amount of wood available, and the work you need the furnace to perform.

The core recipe is the same furnace process in both major editions: put a log or stripped log in the input slot and fuel in the fuel slot. The caution concerns efficiency, not the charcoal recipe itself. Fuel-value comparisons can differ between Java and Bedrock Edition, and the beginner tutorial specifically calls out Bedrock slabs as a possible more-efficient use of wood than converting every log into charcoal.

If you are optimizing a large operation, compare the fuel item available in your edition rather than assuming that a charcoal loop always produces the lowest wood cost. For ordinary early-game play, charcoal remains useful because it is simple, renewable, and supports the listed furnace and fire-related recipes.

The log is in the wrong slot
The log must be in the upper input slot. If it is in the lower slot, the furnace treats it as a possible fuel item rather than the item to be processed. Move it to the top position.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The fuel slot is empty
A furnace needs an input item and a separate fuel item. Add planks, sticks, a wooden tool, or another valid fuel to the lower slot. Seeing a log in the input slot alone is not enough to begin smelting.
You used an unsupported wood item
The charcoal input is a log or stripped log. If you are holding planks, stairs, slabs, doors, or another crafted wood block, use a valid furnace input instead. Keep those items for construction or place an actual log in the top slot.
The output slot is blocked
Remove finished charcoal before starting another operation if the output slot is full. A furnace needs somewhere to place the result.

You expected instant output
Each item takes 10 seconds according to the cited beginner tutorial. Check the furnace progress indicator and allow the cycle to finish before moving the input or fuel.
Your fuel ran out partway through a batch
Count the logs you intend to process and compare that number with your available burn time. One charcoal covers up to eight items under the published figure. For a larger queue, add additional fuel before the furnace stops so the remaining logs continue processing.
You are optimizing Bedrock wood use
If your goal is maximum efficiency rather than simply obtaining charcoal, consider the Bedrock Edition slab note. A charcoal recipe that is convenient for an emergency fuel supply may not be the most economical way to spend every log in a long-running operation.
Scaling from one furnace to a reliable supply
Keep a dedicated log reserve
Separate logs intended for charcoal from logs needed for building, tools, and other crafting. This prevents a large construction project from consuming the input needed to keep your fuel loop alive.
Plan batches around eight items
The 80-second burn time of one charcoal aligns with eight items at 10 seconds each. When your queue is close to eight logs, that is a straightforward batch size. Smaller batches are fine when you are short on logs or need a quick result; larger batches require additional charcoal.
Use multiple furnaces only when you can feed them
Additional furnaces increase simultaneous throughput, but each one needs its own input and fuel. Build more only when your wood gathering and starter-fuel supply can keep every furnace active. Otherwise, one well-supplied furnace is easier to monitor and wastes less attention.
Store charcoal by purpose
- Processing reserve: Charcoal held back for future furnace batches.
- Lighting reserve: Charcoal intended for torches and soul torches.
- Crafting reserve: Charcoal saved for campfires and fire charges.
Separate stacks make it less likely that a long smelting session consumes the material you planned to use for lighting or other recipes.
Practical checklist
- Have at least one regular or stripped log.
- Place a furnace where you can reach it.
- Put the log in the top input slot.
- Put planks, sticks, a wooden tool, or another valid fuel in the bottom slot.
- Wait for the 10-second smelting cycle per item.
- Collect the charcoal from the output slot.
- Use one charcoal for up to eight smelted items when matching the published burn figure.
- Keep separate reserves for furnace work, lighting, campfires, and fire charges.
- Check your edition before assuming a particular wood fuel is the most efficient option.
Key answer
When coal is unavailable, chop a tree, place a log or stripped log in a furnace, add starter fuel below it, and wait for the smelt. The resulting charcoal is renewable, supports furnace work and several fire-related recipes, and can sustain additional log batches without requiring a mined coal supply.
