1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe simplest way to host Society: Sunlit Valley is through a managed Minecraft Java panel that can install the modpack automatically. Self-hosting is also practical, but you must download the CurseForge SERVER-PACK for the exact release you intend to run; the client ZIP downloaded by a launcher is not a runnable server. The pack targets Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1. Plan on 6–8 GB of RAM for a small private group and at least 10 GB for a public server, recognizing that these are host recommendations rather than requirements published by the pack author.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
What you need before creating the server
Society: Sunlit Valley is a Forge 1.20.1 modpack. Every player must install the same modpack release on the client, while the server must use the matching server-pack release. CurseForge publishes separate server-pack archives, including releases identified as 3.1.1 and 3.4.2. The Files listings have inconsistent titles and dates: one listing is labelled SERVER-PACK 3.1.1, another is labelled 4.0.8, and a search result refers to a newer 4.1.5A main release associated with file 8082974. Treat those labels as release clues, not as proof of the current version. Open the pack’s Files tab immediately before downloading and record the exact file name and version that your players will use.

Use the official file pages as your starting point: CurseForge file 6783957 and CurseForge file 7275740. Download the item explicitly marked SERVER-PACK, not the regular client profile or launcher ZIP. The server archive contains the mod JARs, configuration files and a start script. A client download generally contains a manifest intended for a launcher and will not start a dedicated server.
FadeHost identifies Java 17 as the Java version for Minecraft 1.20.1. That is a third-party hosting recommendation; the CurseForge pages cited above do not state an official Java requirement from the pack author. Verify the Java runtime on the machine that will run the server with java -version before troubleshooting anything else.

| Item | What the available information establishes | How to handle uncertainty |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft and loader | Minecraft 1.20.1 on Forge | Install a Java 17 runtime according to the FadeHost guidance, then verify with java -version. |
| Server software | A CurseForge SERVER-PACK for the chosen release | Check the Files tab; do not infer the server version from a launcher profile name. |
| Network port | TCP 25565 | Forward that port only if players outside your home network must connect. |
| Memory | Host recommendations range from 5,000 MB to 10 GB or more | Use 6–8 GB for a small private group and 10 GB or more for a public server, then adjust from observed usage. |
| Storage | No verified pack-author minimum was found | Leave room for the world, backups, logs and generated chunks instead of relying on an unverified 15 GB figure. |
Managed hosting or self-hosting?
Managed hosting removes most of the operating-system and networking work. You create a Minecraft Java instance in a provider’s panel, search for the pack, select a release and click Install. The provider supplies the machine, process controls and usually some form of console; backup, support, billing and uptime policies vary by provider and plan. Self-hosting gives you direct control over files, Forge settings, Java arguments and backups, but you are responsible for the machine, firewall, router and recovery.
| Decision point | Managed panel | Self-hosted machine |
|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | Search for the pack, choose a release, install and start from the control panel. | Obtain the server-pack ZIP, install Java, extract files and run the supplied script. |
| Technical skill | Basic panel and Minecraft knowledge; the provider handles the operating system. | Comfort with Java, files, scripts, firewalls, router rules and backups. |
| Control | Control depends on what the panel exposes; file and configuration access may be limited. | Full access to mods, configs, scripts, Java options and the world directory. |
| Cost | A recurring hosting charge; the supplied information does not establish a universal price. | No hosting subscription, but you supply electricity, hardware, bandwidth and maintenance. |
| Uptime and recovery | The provider operates the machine; confirm its backup, restore and uptime terms. | You must keep the machine online and create and test your own backups. |
| Memory planning | Select a plan with enough allocated RAM; avoid assuming the smallest plan is sufficient. | Reserve RAM for the server without starving the operating system or other services. |
Choose managed hosting when your priority is getting friends online quickly or avoiding router administration. Choose self-hosting when you need complete control, already have a reliable machine and are willing to maintain it.
Route 1: install the pack with a managed host
One-click installers described by several Minecraft hosts follow the same sequence. Labels differ slightly, so treat the wording below as a panel-independent map rather than an exact promise about one provider’s interface.
- Create a Minecraft Java instance. In the provider dashboard, choose Minecraft Java Edition rather than a Bedrock-only service. Give the instance a recognizable name such as “Sunlit Valley” so it is not confused with another server.
- Open the modpack installer. Look for buttons or menus labelled Modpacks, Installer or One-click install. Search for
Society: Sunlit Valley. Some catalogs also expose the author nameChakyl, so use that as a secondary search term if the title does not appear. - Select the exact release. Do not blindly choose “latest” if your friends already have a client profile. Compare the panel’s release number with the CurseForge Files tab and make every player use that same number.
- Install and wait for completion. The panel should download the server files and create the instance. Do not press Start repeatedly while the installer is still unpacking; wait for its completion status or console message.
- Set an adequate memory allocation. For a small private group, begin in the 6–8 GB range. A public server should start at 10 GB or more. These figures come from host recommendations, not a performance guarantee; watch the console and panel memory graph after players begin exploring.
- Start the server once. Read the console for Forge loading errors, missing files or an explicit ready message. The first launch can take longer because the server creates directories and generates initial data.
- Pre-generate chunks before inviting a crowd. Game Host Bros recommends pre-generation so the server is not generating large numbers of new chunks while players explore. Use the pre-generation tool or procedure supported by your panel and pack version, and perform it during a quiet period.
- Give players the address shown by the panel. Players should install the same Forge 1.20.1 pack release in their launcher, then connect using the hostname and port supplied by the provider. If the provider uses a non-default port, use that value rather than assuming 25565.
Managed-host checks after installation
- Confirm that the panel identifies the server as Forge 1.20.1, not vanilla or a different loader.
- Open the file manager or console and verify that the installed release corresponds to the client release everyone will use.
- Locate the panel’s backup and restore controls before the world has valuable progress. Availability and retention differ by provider.
- Check whether the panel lets you edit server properties, configs and Java memory limits. If it does not, know how to request those changes from support.
- Record the server address, port and the exact pack release in your group’s instructions.
Route 2: self-host from the CurseForge server pack
Self-hosting is a file-and-networking task, not a matter of copying your client instance. Use this order so that version mistakes are caught before you expose the server to the internet.

1. Select and download the correct archive
- Open the CurseForge files listing or the alternate file listing.
- Use the Files tab to identify the release your players will install.
- Choose the download whose name explicitly includes SERVER-PACK. Save the ZIP in a temporary download location and keep the release number in your notes.
- Do not substitute the client ZIP from a launcher. FadeHost notes that the client archive is a manifest for installing the game profile, whereas the server pack includes the server-side JARs, configs and start script.
2. Prepare Java and a dedicated folder
- Create a dedicated directory for this server, separate from other Minecraft worlds and modpacks. A dedicated folder makes backups and upgrades less error-prone.
- Install a Java 17 runtime suitable for your operating system, following the runtime distributor’s instructions.
- Open a terminal or command prompt in the server directory and run
java -version. Confirm that the reported major version is 17 before continuing. If another Java version is reported, correct the system PATH or call the Java 17 executable explicitly according to your operating system.
3. Extract and launch the server pack
- Extract the entire SERVER-PACK ZIP into the dedicated directory. Preserve its folder structure; do not move only a few JAR files.
- Inspect the extracted files for the supplied start script and any server-pack README. The exact launch command was not confirmed in the available documentation, so use the command and memory settings specified by that release’s own files rather than copying a command from a different version.
- Run the included start script from the server directory. If the script reports a missing Java executable, return to the Java 17 check and correct the path.
- Read the console output through the first complete startup. Stop and fix a reported missing mod, config or Java error before allowing players to connect.
The pack’s exact start command can change between releases, which is why a command copied from an older guide can fail even when the files are correct. The release’s own script and README are the authoritative instructions for that archive.
4. Set the memory deliberately
Host recommendations disagree: OuiHeberg lists 8 GB as a minimum, FadeHost recommends 6 GB and reports using about 6 GB with a group online, CreeperHost lists 5,000 MB as a minimum, and Game Host Bros recommends at least 10 GB for a public server. None of these figures is a pack-author specification, and publication years were not stated. Use them as planning ranges:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Use case | Practical starting allocation | Why it may need adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| Private server for a few friends | 6–8 GB | Exploration, automation, view distance and simultaneous players can increase usage. |
| Public or frequently populated server | 10 GB or more | More players generate more entities and chunks at once; monitor actual usage rather than relying on a fixed number. |
Do not allocate every gigabyte on the machine to Java. Leave enough memory for the operating system and any other services. If the server repeatedly reaches its allocation and logs out-of-memory errors, stop it cleanly, increase the allocation only if the machine has spare RAM, and test again.
5. Make the network reachable
- For players on the same home network, test with the host computer’s local address first. This isolates mod and server problems from router problems.
- For friends outside your network, create a router port-forwarding rule for TCP 25565, the port identified by FadeHost. Point the rule at the host computer’s local IP address.
- Allow the Java server process through the host operating system’s firewall when prompted, or create an inbound TCP rule for the same port.
- Keep the host computer’s local IP stable, using a DHCP reservation or an equivalent router setting, so the forwarding rule does not silently point to the wrong device after a reboot.
- Test from an external network, such as a phone hotspot. If local players can connect but outside players cannot, inspect the router rule, firewall and whether your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT.
Only forward the port when remote access is required. A private, same-network test does not need an internet-facing rule.

Make the client and server match
Forge servers reject clients when their mod lists, versions or configuration expectations differ. Give every player the same release identifier you recorded from the CurseForge Files tab. A player who installed a newer main profile can still be incompatible with a server running an older SERVER-PACK, even if both profiles are called Society: Sunlit Valley.
- Compare the pack version, Minecraft version and Forge loader shown by the launcher and server files.
- Do not add or remove individual mods casually. A “quick” client-side change can create a missing-mod or mismatched-version error for everyone.
- When changing releases, stop the server, make a complete world backup, install the new server pack in a separate directory or controlled upgrade path, and have players update their clients before reconnecting.
- Keep the old server directory until the new release has started successfully and the world has been tested.
Troubleshooting common failures
The client ZIP will not start as a server
This is the most common setup error. Delete the assumption that the launcher download is a server distribution. Return to the CurseForge Files tab and download the archive labelled SERVER-PACK for the chosen release. Extract its included script and server files, then launch from that directory.
Java errors appear immediately
Run java -version in the same environment used by the start script. If it does not report Java 17, install or select Java 17 and correct the script’s executable path. A panel install may hide the runtime choice; in that case, select Java 17 in the panel’s runtime setting or ask the provider which runtime the instance uses.
The server starts but players get a mod mismatch
Record the exact server-pack release and compare it with each player’s launcher profile. Check Forge 1.20.1 on both sides. Reinstalling the same client profile is safer than manually copying a few JARs, because the pack’s configuration files also matter.

The server runs out of memory
Check whether usage reaches the allocated limit during exploration or when several players join. A small private group generally fits the 6–8 GB planning range; public operation should begin at 10 GB or more. Increase the allocation only when the physical machine has capacity, and reduce simultaneous chunk generation by pre-generating the intended play area.
Local connections work but remote connections fail
Verify that the router forwards TCP 25565 to the correct local IP, that the operating-system firewall permits Java, and that the external test uses the public address. A changing local IP or carrier-grade NAT can invalidate an otherwise correct rule.
Exploration causes severe lag
New terrain generation is workload-intensive. Pre-generate chunks before inviting many players, as recommended by Game Host Bros, and avoid testing performance while the server is simultaneously creating a large unexplored area.
The Files tab shows confusing releases
Do not rely on a search snippet or a listing title alone. The available listings mention SERVER-PACK 3.1.1, 4.0.8 and a search result for 4.1.5A, with conflicting date details. Open the current Files tab, select one release deliberately, and have both the server operator and players use that same file.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Operating the server safely
Backups
Managed panels may expose scheduled backups, but retention and restore limits are provider-specific. On a self-hosted machine, copy the world and relevant configuration files to storage outside the live server directory on a schedule that matches how much progress your group can afford to lose. Test a restore on a separate copy; a backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
Updates
Before updating the pack, stop the server cleanly and preserve the previous server directory. Keep the old release number, current world backup and a note of any configuration changes. Have players update their clients only after the new server has passed a startup and connection test.

Quick Recap
A launch checklist
- Selected a specific Society: Sunlit Valley release from the current CurseForge Files tab.
- Downloaded the matching SERVER-PACK, not the client launcher ZIP.
- Confirmed Forge 1.20.1 and verified Java 17 with
java -version. - Allocated approximately 6–8 GB for a small private group or 10 GB or more for public use, with operating-system headroom.
- Extracted the complete archive and used its own start script and README.
- Tested a local connection before changing router settings.
- Forwarded TCP 25565 only when remote players are required and allowed Java through the firewall.
- Pre-generated chunks before a large exploration session.
- Recorded the release number, server address and port for players.
