To host an Enigmatica 2 server, download the pack’s separate server files from CurseForge, install 64-bit Java 8, extract the files into a new folder, set the memory value in the settings file, and launch the supplied startup script. On the first run, accept the Minecraft EULA, then allow TCP port 25565 through the computer’s firewall and forward that port from your router if players will connect from outside your home.

Enigmatica 2 is a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.12.2, so it needs the older Java 8 runtime rather than the newer Java versions commonly used by current Minecraft releases. The procedure below is for the standard Enigmatica 2 pack, not Enigmatica 2: Expert or another extended edition.

What you need before installing
Prepare the host machine before downloading anything. A little planning prevents the most common first-start failures: the wrong Java version, an incomplete client download, insufficient memory, and a server directory that is being synchronized by cloud software.
- A 64-bit Windows or Linux computer: The machine must remain powered on while people are playing. A home server can work, but sleep mode, laptop lid actions, reboots and internet outages will disconnect everyone.
- 64-bit Java 8: Enigmatica 2 uses the Forge 1.12.2 generation. Install Java 8 and verify that the command reports version 1.8 before launching the pack.
- Free memory: The supplied settings file starts with
MAX_RAM=4G. For a small group, starting around 6 GB is a practical adjustment, provided the operating system and other applications still have room. Community recommendations are not an official performance guarantee: one guide lists 7 GB for Enigmatica 2 and 6.5 GB for the Expert pack (CreateTogether recommended settings). - Storage: Leave space for the world, backups, logs and temporary installer files. Keep the server in a normal local folder, not a cloud-synchronized directory.
- Network access: Players on your home network can usually connect using the host’s local address. Players elsewhere require an inbound firewall rule and router port forwarding for TCP 25565.
Do not put the installation in OneDrive or another continuously synchronized folder. The Enigmatica documentation warns that synchronization can lock files while the installer is running and leave the setup stuck (server-installation guide).

Download the correct Enigmatica 2 files
Use the server package, not the client pack
Open the Enigmatica 2 project page on CurseForge and choose its server download. The client modpack that you install in a launcher is not a substitute for the dedicated-server archive: it lacks the server startup layout and installation scripts.
Build numbers change over time. Use the current release shown on the project page instead of copying an old number from a tutorial. The same caution applies to testing builds; every player should use the same pack release and Forge-compatible files as the server.

Create a folder dedicated to this server, such as C:MinecraftEnigmatica2 on Windows or /srv/enigmatica2 on Linux, and extract the entire server archive there. Do not nest the files several levels deep inside another archive folder, and do not mix them with a previous Enigmatica installation. A clean directory makes it obvious which settings, world and mod files belong to this instance.
Install and verify Java 8
Install a 64-bit Java 8 distribution appropriate for your operating system. If the computer also has Java 17 or another version for a different game, the Enigmatica startup script may select the wrong executable. Check from a terminal or Command Prompt:
java -versionThe output should identify Java 1.8. If it reports a newer major version, install Java 8 or edit the startup configuration so it points to the Java 8 executable explicitly. The Enigmatica server-installation documentation calls for 64-bit Java 8 and notes that newer Java versions do not run Forge 1.12.2 correctly (EnigmaticaModpacks server installation guide).

On Linux, confirm that the account used to launch the server sees the same Java installation as your interactive shell. On Windows, avoid relying on a file association that opens a JAR with an unrelated Java version; use the supplied script, which is designed to start the pack in the expected way.
Set memory and startup options
Change MAX_RAM before the first launch
Open the settings file included in the server archive and find the MAX_RAM entry. It ships at 4G. For a lightly populated server, change it to a value your machine can sustain, for example:
MAX_RAM=6GDo not assign all physical memory to Java. Leave enough for Windows or Linux, the file cache, the installer and any voice chat, monitoring or backup tools. If the host has 8 GB total, assigning 6 GB can leave too little headroom; a machine with 16 GB or more gives you more flexibility.
Memory advice varies because player count, automation-heavy bases, exploration and chunk loading all change the workload. The pack’s default is 4 GB, while community guidance lists higher values; the CreateTogether table lists 7 GB for standard Enigmatica 2 and 6.5 GB for Expert (recommended settings wiki). Treat those figures as starting points rather than guaranteed requirements. Increase the allocation only when the host has free physical memory and logs or in-game behavior show that it is needed.
Leave JAVA_ARGS alone unless you understand the change
The same settings file contains JAVA_ARGS, including garbage-collection flags tuned for this Minecraft generation. Keep the supplied line for the first installation. Changing Java arguments without understanding their effect can make startup fail or produce worse pauses than the original settings.

Run the installer and start the server
- Windows: Double-click or run
ServerStartfrom the server directory. If Windows hides extensions, verify that you are launching the supplied script rather than opening a random JAR. - Linux: Run
ServerStartLinuxfrom a terminal in the server directory. Do not invoke the Linux script with plainshas a substitute for the documented launcher; use the supplied script and ensure it has execute permission if the archive did not preserve it. - Wait through the first installation: The initial launch downloads or assembles Forge and mod files and can take a long time. Keep the terminal window open and watch for an actual completion or server-ready message rather than assuming that a quiet period means it has finished.
- Stop cleanly: If the process asks for input, use the server console’s normal stop command rather than closing the window. A clean stop reduces the chance of a damaged world or incomplete configuration.
The pack’s SERVER_GUIDE.txt also recommends preparing the world before players arrive. World pregeneration can reduce the lag spikes caused by several players exploring new terrain simultaneously, but it can take substantial time and storage; perform it while the server is otherwise empty.
Accept the EULA and complete the first boot
The first run creates an EULA file and normally stops. Open eula.txt in the server folder, change the agreement line to:
eula=trueSave the file and start the same script again. The server should proceed to generate its configuration and world files. Never delete eula.txt to bypass this step; the required action is to record your acceptance in the file.
Allow the first successful boot to finish before changing many settings. Once the console reaches a ready state, stop it normally, make a backup, and then adjust gameplay or performance options one change at a time. This gives you a known-good installation to return to.
Open the firewall and router
Allow the host firewall
Create an inbound rule for TCP port 25565 in the host operating system’s firewall. The same port should be allowed for outbound traffic where your firewall policy requires separate rules. On Windows, this is done in Windows Defender Firewall’s advanced inbound and outbound rules; on Linux, add the equivalent TCP rule to the firewall system enabled on that machine.

Only open the port on the machine that actually runs the server. If the startup script is bound to a non-default port, use that configured port instead, but a fresh Enigmatica installation uses 25565 by default.
Forward the port for friends outside your home
- Give the server computer a stable address on your home network, preferably with a DHCP reservation in the router. A changing local address will eventually make an existing forwarding rule point at the wrong device.
- In the router’s port-forwarding page, create a rule for TCP 25565 from the internet to the server computer’s local IP address and TCP port 25565.
- Save the rule and restart the router only if its interface requires it. Avoid exposing additional administrative ports; Minecraft needs only the game port for normal connections.
- Have a friend test from a different network, such as a mobile hotspot. Testing from inside the same LAN can give misleading results on routers without NAT loopback.
Your public address can change when your internet provider reconnects. Give trusted players the current address through a private channel, and do not publish it alongside unrelated personal information. The GameTeam port-forwarding overview also identifies 25565 as the default Minecraft port (GameTeam guide).
Connect and verify the installation
Players on the same network
Use the host computer’s local IPv4 address in the multiplayer server entry. The player’s client must run the matching Enigmatica 2 release and Minecraft/Forge combination. A client from a different pack edition, an outdated build or a manually changed mod list can be rejected even when the network is working.

Players connecting over the internet
Use the router’s public address and the forwarded port. If the connection times out, check the failure path in order: confirm the server console is running, confirm it is listening on 25565, verify the operating-system firewall rule, verify that the router forwards to the correct local IP, and test whether your internet service uses carrier-grade NAT. A carrier-grade NAT setup may prevent unsolicited inbound connections even when the router rule is correct; in that case, ask the provider about a public IPv4 address or use a different hosting arrangement.
Confirm that the server is really ready
- The console remains open instead of exiting immediately.
- The world folder and configuration files have been created.
- The server reports a listening port and reaches its ready state.
- A local client can join before you troubleshoot remote access.
Keep the server healthy
Back up the right files
Stop the server before making a full backup. Copy the world folder, configuration, mods, schematics and scripts folders, along with the settings file and any custom files you added. Keep at least one backup away from the live server disk. A backup made while chunks are actively being written may be incomplete, so schedule backups during a maintenance window or use a tool that is designed for live-server snapshots.

Control lag methodically
Start with the memory value, not random Java flags. If the host is swapping, reduce other applications or move the server to a machine with more physical RAM. If Java has plenty of free memory but the server still stalls during exploration, pregenerate the intended play area and inspect heavily loaded machines, chunk loaders and redstone systems. More allocated RAM cannot fix a slow CPU, a saturated disk or a poor network route.
Plan restarts
Modded 1.12.2 servers benefit from planned restarts after backups and updates. Announce maintenance, stop the server cleanly, copy the backup, then launch the same startup script again. Do not kill the process repeatedly during world saves.
Update Enigmatica 2 without losing the world
Read the current release information on the CurseForge project page and check the Forge version at the top of the changelog before changing files. Updates can require every player to update their client as well.
- Stop the running server and make a complete backup of the world, configuration, mods, schematics and scripts folders.
- Keep the existing world folder and settings file in a safe location. Do not overwrite your only backup.
- Remove the old
config,mods,schematicsandscriptsdirectories from the live server directory, as the Enigmatica installation guide specifies for a fresh file set. - Download the new server package and extract it into an empty temporary folder. Do not extract an update over a half-running server.
- Copy the preserved world and settings file into the new server directory, review any changed settings, and run the new startup script once with no players connected.
- Watch the console for missing-mod, Forge-version or script errors. If the update fails, stop the process and restore the previous directory and backup rather than repeatedly launching a damaged world.
The documented update procedure is intentionally conservative: preserve the world and settings, replace generated pack content, and verify the Forge version before inviting players back.
Common problems and fixes

Self-hosting versus rented game-server hosting
A rented Minecraft host is an alternative when you do not want a home computer running continuously. Some providers offer Enigmatica 2 as a preinstalled selection, which removes most Java and port-forwarding work. Pricing, memory limits, backup policies and promotional terms vary, so check the current plan details before paying.
