To host a public Squad server in 2026, install the separate dedicated-server tool through SteamCMD with App ID 403240, configure the server files, allow the required UDP traffic through every firewall and router layer, and test a connection from outside the host network. A process that starts successfully is not automatically reachable or listed in the main browser. The October 8, 2026 setup guidance was verified against Squad 10.6 Hotfix 2, released October 2, 2026; check the files installed by your current build before copying any port or launch example.
Choose a host that can accept inbound connections
There are two practical models: run the server on a machine you control, or rent a dedicated game-server machine or virtual server. The right choice depends less on the installer than on whether the host can receive unsolicited traffic, sustain the desired player load, and be administered safely.

Self-hosting requirements
- A Windows or Linux machine that can remain online for the matches you schedule.
- Control of the operating-system firewall and, if applicable, the router or cloud-provider firewall.
- A stable upstream connection with an address players can reach.
- Enough sustained CPU performance, memory, storage, and network capacity for your player cap, maps, and mods.
- A plan for updates, backups, monitoring, and recovery when the process or machine fails.
Carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT) is a common blocker. If your internet provider places your connection behind CGNAT, unsolicited inbound IPv4 traffic may never reach your router. You may need a provider-supported public address or another supported mapping arrangement. Port forwarding on your own router cannot solve a routing problem that occurs upstream.
When rented hosting is simpler
Rented hosting is useful when you lack a public inbound path, suitable hardware, or time for operating-system maintenance. Before ordering, confirm that the service gives you the access you need to the operating system or control panel, the CPU performance available under sustained load, memory and storage headroom, region, DDoS and firewall controls, backups, mod support, support response, and the licensing arrangement required for your intended listing category. A provider’s advertised memory figure is not an official Squad requirement, and no single plan is guaranteed to fit every layer or mod set.

Install the Squad dedicated server with SteamCMD
The dedicated server is a separate Steam tool, not the ordinary game client. Its Steam application ID is 403240. SteamCMD can install it anonymously, so you do not need to use a personal Steam account for the download.
Windows installation
- Download and extract SteamCMD from Valve’s current distribution.
- Create a dedicated directory such as
C:/SquadServer. Keep the server files separate from SteamCMD itself and from any personal game installation. - Open Command Prompt or PowerShell and run SteamCMD with the installation directory, anonymous login, and the dedicated-server app ID:
steamcmd +force_install_dir C:/SquadServer +login anonymous +app_update 403240 +quit
Use a directory on a volume with sufficient free space and permissions for the account that will run the service. If Windows Defender Firewall prompts for access, do not approve broad access automatically; create rules for the ports and protocols you actually configure.

- Install SteamCMD using your distribution’s supported package method, or extract the current SteamCMD package into a directory you administer.
- Create a server directory such as
/opt/squad-serverand ensure the service account can write to it. - Run the anonymous installation command:
steamcmd +force_install_dir /opt/squad-server +login anonymous +app_update 403240 +quit
Run the process under a dedicated, non-root service account. This limits the damage a compromised plugin, script, or service process could cause.
Updating and validating files
Stop the server before updating its files. The routine update command is:
steamcmd +force_install_dir /opt/squad-server +login anonymous +app_update 403240 +quit
Change the installation path to your actual directory on Windows or Linux. Validation is a repair tool, not a mandatory part of every routine update. If files are corrupted or the server begins crashing in an unusual way, run:
steamcmd +force_install_dir /opt/squad-server +login anonymous +app_update 403240 validate +quit
After an update, review your launch script and configuration files rather than assuming every older option remains appropriate for the current build.
Set launch parameters and initial configuration
The October 2026 guide uses the following values in its examples: game port 7787 UDP, query port 27165 UDP, beacon port 15000, a fixed maximum of 80 players, and RANDOM=NONE. These are example parameters, not a universal optimum. Treat them as a starting point and verify the current build, provider panel, and installed configuration before opening ports.
| Setting | Example value | What it controls | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game port | 7787 UDP | Gameplay traffic | Listed as a default in the October 2026 guide; confirm your deployment. |
| Query port | 27165 UDP | Server-query and discovery traffic | Listed as a default in the October 2026 guide; browser behavior depends on the current build and network path. |
| Beacon port | 15000 | Beacon traffic in the example launch | An example launch value; do not open it unless your current launch and provider configuration use it. |
| Player cap | 80 | Maximum simultaneous players | A launch example, not a performance guarantee. |
| Map randomness | RANDOM=NONE |
Disables random selection in the example | Replace it with the rotation behavior your community wants. |
Start with a repeatable launch script
Keep the launch command in a script or service definition so restarts use the same settings. A representative example is:

SquadGameServer.exe Port=7787 QueryPort=27165 beaconport=15000 FIXEDMAXPLAYERS=80 RANDOM=NONE
The executable name and wrapper differ between installations, so use the executable present in your server directory. Do not paste this line unchanged into a production deployment until you have checked current build documentation and the generated files.
Configure the server files
The principal configuration directory is SquadGame/ServerConfig/. The installation material identifies these important files:
Server.cfgfor server identity and core server settings.Admins.cfgfor administrator permissions.Rcon.cfgfor remote-console settings.- Rotation and related administration files for map and layer selection.
Set a recognizable server name, choose a deliberate rotation, and define administrator access before inviting the public. Make one change at a time, restart when the setting requires it, and preserve a known-good copy so you can roll back a bad edit.
Open only the traffic the server needs
Every network layer must agree: the operating-system firewall, the router or cloud firewall, and any provider security group. Allow UDP on the ports used by your current configuration. The guide’s defaults are 7787 for game traffic and 27165 for query traffic; its example launch also uses beacon port 15000.
Windows firewall example
Create narrowly scoped inbound rules for the configured UDP ports, using your chosen rule names and restricting source networks where practical. The exact PowerShell syntax can vary with your policy, but the rule should identify UDP rather than opening all traffic to the executable. If you change a port later, change the firewall rule at the same time.
Linux firewall example
With a firewall such as UFW, allow only the configured UDP ports, for example:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
sudo ufw allow 7787/udp
sudo ufw allow 27165/udp
sudo ufw allow 15000/udp
Only retain the beacon rule if your current launch requires it. Cloud security groups and hosting dashboards can still block traffic after UFW permits it, so inspect both layers.
Router forwarding and CGNAT
If the machine sits behind a home router, forward the configured UDP ports to its fixed private address. Reserve that address so the forwarding target does not change after a reboot. If your provider uses CGNAT, ask whether it can supply a public address or supported inbound mapping; otherwise, move the service to a host with a reachable address.
Verify browser visibility and external joining
Start the server and watch its log for configuration errors, bind failures, or repeated crashes. Then check the browser category appropriate to your licensing status. A successful local launch proves only that the process started; it does not prove that internet players can discover or join it.

- [Overclocking] Intel XMP 2.0 and AMD Ryzen
- Confirm the process is listening on the configured local ports.
- Check the host firewall, router forwarding, and provider firewall for the same UDP values.
- Look in the expected browser category and verify that the server name, player count, map, and version are current.
- Attempt a join from a different network, such as a mobile hotspot or another household connection. A second device on the same LAN does not test the internet path.
- Record which layer failed before changing another setting.
Keep the external test in your release checklist whenever you change ports, provider, public address, major game version, or network equipment.

You can run an unlicensed server, but the sources distinguish where it appears. Unlicensed servers are listed under Custom Servers; a license is required for placement in the primary Server Browser. The current guide also says licensed servers must remain public and describes infrastructure-related constraints.
Because eligibility rules can change, check the current licensing process from Offworld before making a purchase or architecture decision that depends on primary-browser placement. Do not assume that installing the dedicated tool, keeping the server public, or choosing a particular host automatically satisfies those rules.
Size the hardware from workload, not a single number
There is no authoritative hardware statistic in the available material that can serve as a universal minimum. Sustained per-core CPU performance is the first constraint to examine, followed by memory, network stability, storage, player count, map layers, and mods. Measure during realistic matches rather than during an empty-server startup.
CPU
Squad server performance is sensitive to sustained single-core or per-core performance. A processor with many slower cores is not automatically better than one with fewer faster cores. Watch CPU behavior during full matches and busy layer transitions, not only average utilization across all cores.

Memory
RedSwitches’ 2026 planning guide uses 32 GB of RAM for an 80-player setup. That figure is a provider planning estimate, not an official Squad requirement. Your actual need changes with the operating system, other services, mods, logging, and the player cap. Leave headroom so the host does not swap under load.
Storage and network
Use storage with enough free space for the installation, updates, logs, backups, and temporary files. Network quality matters more than a headline download speed: stable upstream capacity, low loss, and predictable latency are essential. Select a region close to most players, while remembering that the server’s location cannot eliminate poor last-mile connections.
Set a cap through measurement
- Begin with a conservative player cap and an unmodified or lightly modified rotation.
- Run full-length matches on the layers your community actually uses.
- Record per-core CPU behavior, memory use, tick or simulation symptoms, crashes, and player reports.
- Add planned mods and repeat the test.
- Raise the cap only when the measured workload remains stable, and lower it if late-match performance degrades.
Self-hosting versus renting
| Decision factor | Machine you manage | Rented hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Full control of operating system, files, services, and network edge. | Depends on whether the provider supplies root or administrative access and what its panel permits. |
| Inbound connectivity | You must solve public addressing, router forwarding, and CGNAT. | The provider normally supplies a reachable network path, but verify the assigned address and firewall controls. |
| Maintenance | You handle patches, monitoring, backups, hardware failures, and recovery. | The provider may handle hardware and facility operations; you still manage Squad updates and configuration. |
| Performance | Depends on your processor’s sustained per-core speed and contention from other workloads. | Ask how CPU resources are allocated and whether neighboring workloads can affect performance. |
| Security | You design firewall rules, remote access, accounts, and update policy. | Review provider firewalls, DDoS provisions, account security, and emergency support. |
| Backups | You choose destinations, retention, and restore tests. | Confirm whether backups exist, how often they run, where they are stored, and whether you can download them. |
| Mods and files | Broad control, subject to your own storage and maintenance capacity. | Check upload methods, supported mod workflows, storage limits, and restrictions on custom files. |
| Licensing | You remain responsible for meeting the current listing rules. | Confirm that the provider’s infrastructure and address arrangement can satisfy the intended licensing category. |
| Recurring cost | Up-front hardware and continuing electricity, bandwidth, and replacement costs. | Predictable recurring payment, with plan limits and possible charges for extras. |
Choose self-hosting when control and existing hardware outweigh maintenance work. Choose rental when public reachability, facility reliability, or time savings matter more than low-level control. Neither option removes the need to test an external join.

Backups
Back up Server.cfg, Admins.cfg, Rcon.cfg, rotation files, launch scripts, and any provider-specific settings before edits or updates. Keep at least one copy away from the server machine and periodically restore it to confirm that the backup is usable.
Operational access
Use separate operating-system accounts for service operation and administration. Limit SSH or remote-desktop exposure, require strong authentication, apply operating-system security updates, and record who changed a configuration and when. A restart script should not embed secrets in a world-readable file.
Troubleshoot the problems players actually see
The process starts but the server is absent from the browser
- Check whether you are looking under Custom Servers or the primary browser category required by your license status.
- Verify the query port and game port in the launch command, configuration, host firewall, router, and provider firewall.
- Confirm that the server and client are on compatible versions and that required mods or layers are available.
- Check logs for bind errors, duplicate ports, crashes, or failed initialization.
- Test from outside the host network; local discovery can succeed even when internet routing is blocked.
Players see the server but cannot join
Compare the address and ports advertised by the server with the address actually forwarded to the host. Check whether the machine’s private address changed, whether the provider firewall differs from the operating-system firewall, and whether a CGNAT boundary is preventing return traffic. Try an external test from a second network and change one layer at a time.
The server disappears after an update
Stop the process, update App ID 403240, and inspect configuration files for changed or invalid options. Use validation when corruption or unexplained crashes suggest damaged files. Reapply only settings you have confirmed for the current build, then repeat the external browser and join tests.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePerformance falls when the server fills
Compare the timing of the slowdown with player count, layer changes, and mod activity. Examine per-core CPU load and memory pressure rather than relying only on total CPU percentage. Lower the player cap or remove the heaviest mod while you test; increasing the cap without workload evidence can make the problem worse.
RCON is being probed or abused
Rotate the password immediately, restrict the RCON port or access path, review administrator entries, and inspect logs for unauthorized attempts. A VPN or tightly scoped firewall rule is preferable to an RCON endpoint open to every internet address.
A repeatable maintenance routine
- Announce a maintenance window and stop the server cleanly.
- Back up configuration, permissions, rotation files, and launch scripts.
- Update the dedicated server with SteamCMD using App ID 403240.
- Use validation only when corruption or unusual crashes justify it.
- Review the current launch parameters and compare them with the installed build.
- Start privately, inspect logs, and verify the expected ports are listening.
- Perform an external browser and join test before reopening a public event.
- Record the version, changes, and rollback point for the next incident.
This process prevents a routine update from becoming an unexplained public outage and gives administrators a known recovery path.
Bottom line
Hosting Squad in 2026 is straightforward when treated as a networked service rather than a game executable: install App ID 403240, configure the files under SquadGame/ServerConfig/, expose only the UDP ports your current build uses, secure RCON, and verify a join from another network. Decide between self-hosting and rental based on inbound reachability, sustained per-core performance, maintenance time, backup control, and licensing eligibility. Use the 32 GB-for-80-player figure only as the RedSwitches 2026 planning estimate it is, then set your real player cap from measurements on your maps and mods.
