It is a single collection containing Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Nintendo’s UK listing gives the digital Switch release date as November 11, 2021. A physical edition followed on December 7, 2021, but Nintendo says that cartridge requires an internet download.
No official native Switch release for a separate title such as Grand Theft Auto V is established by the official availability information covered here. That is a narrow statement about the releases identified by Nintendo and Rockstar, not a claim that every GTA platform listing worldwide has been catalogued.

The Grand Theft Auto games included on Switch
The Switch product is not three separately listed eShop purchases. Nintendo identifies the release as Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, an updated collection of three earlier games. Buying that collection gives you access to all three titles in the package:
| Game | Included in the Switch collection? | How it is obtained |
|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto III | Yes | Part of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition |
| Grand Theft Auto: Vice City | Yes | Part of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition |
| Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas | Yes | Part of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition |
Rockstar’s announcement describes the package as comprising those three titles, while Nintendo presents it as an updated collection rather than independent Switch versions. In practical terms, the Switch purchase to look for is the trilogy listing, not three individual game pages.
#1 Best Overall
- Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile. Grand Theft Auto returns with Tommy Vercetti’s tale of betrayal and revenge in a neon-soaked tropical town full of excess and brimming with possibilities.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl ‘CJ’ Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption. Now, it's the early 90s. CJ’s got to go home - his mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart, and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster.
When the Switch version was released
Digital release
Nintendo’s UK product page specifies November 11, 2021, as the Switch release date. Rockstar’s announcement also says the collection was available through the Nintendo eShop. Storefront presentation, pricing and availability can vary by country, so use the listing in the Nintendo Account region where you intend to buy.
Physical release
Rockstar announced a physical Switch edition for December 7, 2021. A box and cartridge do not mean that every file is on the cartridge: Nintendo’s listing explicitly warns that an internet download is required for the physical version. Plan for a download before expecting to launch the complete collection.
What the physical edition requires
The download requirement is the most important practical difference between the physical and digital formats. It affects setup, storage planning and whether you can finish installation at a location with no internet connection.

- Confirm the regional product. Check the package or retailer listing for the Nintendo Switch edition of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. Regional stock and packaging can differ.
- Connect the Switch to the internet. Use a reliable Wi-Fi connection before inserting the cartridge. Nintendo’s warning means the cartridge is not entirely self-contained.
- Insert the cartridge and follow the system prompt. The console should identify the game and direct you to download the required data.
- Allow the download to complete. Keep the console powered and connected until installation finishes. If the connection drops, resume the download from the console’s software-management screen.
- Keep the cartridge available. The physical copy is still the way you launch the cartridge edition after installation; downloading data does not turn it into a cartridge-free digital license.
Nintendo’s product page does not state the download size in the information used here. Check the live regional listing and the Switch’s available storage before purchase rather than assuming the cartridge contains the complete game.

How to get the digital version
The digital route avoids a cartridge, but it still depends on the current Nintendo eShop listing for your region and sufficient console or microSD storage.
- Open Nintendo eShop on the Switch.
- Select the Nintendo Account profile that will own the purchase.
- Search for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.
- Verify that the result is the Switch collection containing Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City and San Andreas.
- Review the region-specific price, age information and storage details shown on the product page.
- Complete the purchase, then start the download from the confirmation screen or the HOME menu.
Because storefront catalogs and prices can change, the listing displayed to your Nintendo Account is the authoritative check for your market. The official sources establish the Switch release, but they do not guarantee that a product is continuously in stock or displayed identically in every country.
What “The Definitive Edition” changes
Nintendo describes the collection as an updated version of the three original games. Its product-page description lists several categories of enhancement:
- Updated lighting and environments.
- High-resolution textures.
- Increased draw distances.
- Controls and targeting styled after Grand Theft Auto V.
Those are Nintendo’s product descriptions, not independent performance measurements. They explain the intended presentation and control updates, but they do not establish a particular frame rate, resolution in every mode, battery life, loading time or image-quality result. Treat any technical claim beyond the listed features as something that needs separate, verifiable evidence.

Is Grand Theft Auto V on Nintendo Switch?
The official Switch availability identified here is the trilogy collection. The sources do not establish an official native Switch release for a separate game such as Grand Theft Auto V. Therefore, do not interpret the trilogy listing as including Grand Theft Auto V, and do not buy it expecting that title.
This exclusion is deliberately narrow. Nintendo’s product listing and Rockstar’s announcement confirm the contents of this Switch collection; they are not presented as an exhaustive catalog of every GTA appearance on every platform, streaming service or future product. If a different GTA title appears in a local store search, verify that it is a Nintendo Switch product from an official listing rather than assuming compatibility from the series name.
One purchase or three?
For Switch, the official release identified by Nintendo is one collection. The three games are components of that package, not three separately listed Switch releases in the information available here.

Choosing physical or digital
| Consideration | Physical Switch edition | Digital Switch edition |
|---|---|---|
| Release timing announced by Rockstar | December 7, 2021 | Available through Nintendo eShop; Nintendo’s UK page dates the Switch release to November 11, 2021 |
| Internet needed for initial setup | Yes. Nintendo says an internet download is required | Yes, to download the collection |
| Cartridge included | Yes, but it is not entirely self-contained | No |
| Regional availability | Depends on local retail stock and edition | Depends on the Nintendo Account’s regional eShop |
| Best fit | Players who want a physical copy and can complete a download | Players who prefer direct access from the HOME menu and have adequate storage |
The physical edition is not automatically the offline option because of Nintendo’s download notice. Choose it for the format, ownership and sharing preferences that matter to you, not on the assumption that every game file is on the cartridge.
How to verify a listing before buying
Use this checklist when a search result, second-hand listing or regional store page is unclear:
- The platform is explicitly identified as Nintendo Switch.
- The product name is Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.
- The description names Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
- A physical listing acknowledges Nintendo’s internet-download requirement.
- The seller or storefront identifies the region and edition.
- You have checked current stock, price and storage information in your own market.
If one of these checks fails, pause before paying. A title-only listing can be incomplete, platform-specific or mislabeled.

Nintendo’s warning is explicit: the physical version requires an internet download. Arrange the connection first and leave enough storage for the installation data shown by your console or regional product page.

Searching for separate Switch pages
The official Switch product is the trilogy. Search for the collection’s full name rather than expecting independent Switch listings for each component.
Confusing the included games
Confirm all three names in the product description. The collection contains Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City and San Andreas; the presence of one title in a search snippet does not by itself describe the whole package.
Using a different region’s information
Nintendo’s cited release date is from its UK product listing. Prices, stock, packaging and storefront visibility may differ elsewhere. Check your local Nintendo listing before treating any date or offer as applicable to you.

Treating feature descriptions as benchmark results
Updated lighting, textures, draw distances and Grand Theft Auto V-styled controls are product-page claims. They should not be read as guarantees about performance in every play mode or hardware condition.
What the official information confirms—and what it does not
The available official information confirms four useful facts: the Switch product is the trilogy collection; the collection includes the three named games; Nintendo lists November 11, 2021 for the Switch release in the UK; and Rockstar announced a physical edition for December 7, 2021. Nintendo also confirms that physical owners must download data over the internet.
It does not provide a current stock guarantee for every retailer, a universal regional price, a download-size figure, or independent performance testing. It also does not establish a native Switch release for other separate GTA titles. Keeping those boundaries clear prevents a correct answer about the trilogy from becoming an unsupported claim about the entire franchise.
Bottom line
To play Grand Theft Auto on Nintendo Switch, look for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. It is the official Switch collection containing Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. You can buy it digitally through the Nintendo eShop or find the physical edition announced for December 7, 2021, but the physical version still requires an internet download. Check your regional listing for current availability, price and storage details, and do not assume that the package includes Grand Theft Auto V or any other separate GTA title.
