To host Tensura Neo Otherworld, use Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge, Java 21, and the server pack that matches your chosen modpack release. The CurseForge files page currently lists server_pack_1.21.zip alongside release 1.1.2a, uploaded October 4, 2026. Install the archive in its own directory, run its supplied launch script, accept the EULA, configure access controls, and give the machine enough memory for the number of players and mods you will run.

For a small private server, plan around the published 6–8 GB guidance for heavier modded packs; a specialist Tensura deployment lists 10 GB. Those figures are hosting recommendations rather than an official developer minimum. Version pinning, Java selection, firewall setup, whitelisting, and recoverable backups determine whether the server remains playable after the first launch.

What you need before hosting

Tensura Neo Otherworld is a Java Edition adventure modpack built for Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge. A server is not compatible with a different Minecraft version, a Forge installation, or a client using another pack release. Decide on one exact release before downloading anything and record that release in your setup notes.

Hardware and account checklist

  • A computer or hosted instance with a modern CPU, fast storage, and a stable network connection.
  • Java 21 installed and available to the account that launches the server.
  • Enough memory for the operating system, Java process, world, and other applications. Do not assign every available gigabyte to Minecraft.
  • Permission to open the server port on the machine and, for home hosting, on the router.
  • A separate location for backups. A second folder on the same disk is not protection against disk failure.
  • A Minecraft Java Edition account for each player. The modpack itself does not turn a Bedrock installation into a NeoForge client.

Choose and preserve one pack release

  1. Open the Tensura Neo Otherworld files page on CurseForge and identify the release you intend to run. At the time covered here, the page listed 1.1.2a and server_pack_1.21.zip.
  2. Download the client archive and the matching server pack. If a release offers separate server files, do not substitute a similarly named archive from another release.
  3. Create a dedicated directory such as TensuraNeoOtherworld-1.1.2a-server. Keep the directory separate from other Minecraft servers and from your client instance.
  4. Copy the untouched server ZIP to a backup location. Record the pack release, download date, Java version, NeoForge build shown by the pack, allocated memory, and any configuration changes.
  5. Extract the server archive into the dedicated directory. Preserve the supplied folder structure and launch files; moving individual mods or libraries into unrelated directories makes later troubleshooting harder.

Do not update individual mods simply because a newer file appears on a mod page. A curated pack can depend on specific mod versions, configuration files, and scripts. Treat the archive as one tested unit and upgrade only after making a new backup and confirming that clients can use the same release.

Install Java 21 and confirm the runtime

The setup reference for this pack identifies Java 21. Installing another Java version is a common cause of launch failures even when the mod files are correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install a 64-bit Java 21 runtime on the host. Use the operating system’s normal package or installer process and make sure the server account can execute it.
  2. Open a terminal or command prompt and run java -version. The output should identify a Java 21 runtime. If it reports an older major version, fix the system path or use the full path to Java 21.
  3. Open the supplied NeoForge/start script in a text editor. Check that its Java command resolves to Java 21 rather than an older installation selected by the operating system.
  4. Run the script from the server directory, not from a shortcut whose working directory points elsewhere. Relative paths in modded server scripts depend on the current directory.

If the script already includes memory flags, change those flags rather than replacing the entire command. Retain the pack’s loader and library arguments exactly as supplied.

First launch and EULA acceptance

  1. Run the supplied start script once. The first run normally creates configuration files, libraries, logs, and a world directory before stopping because the EULA has not been accepted.
  2. Open the generated eula.txt in the server directory. Read the agreement, then change the acceptance setting to eula=true only if you agree to it.
  3. Run the same script again and watch the console until NeoForge reports that the server has finished starting or is ready for commands.
  4. Stop the server from its console with the normal stop command. Do not close the terminal or kill the process while the world is saving unless it is completely unresponsive.
  5. Start it again and confirm that the same world, configuration, and mod list load. This second clean launch is a useful checkpoint before exposing the server to other players.

Configure the server before inviting anyone

Edit server.properties while the server is stopped, then restart it so every change is loaded. Make one group of changes at a time and keep a copy of the file with your backup.

Server identity and gameplay

  • motd: Set a recognizable name so players can distinguish this world from other servers in their list.
  • difficulty: Choose the intended difficulty before players begin. Changing it later can affect progression and expectations.
  • view-distance: Start conservatively and raise it only after checking tick time and memory use with your normal player count. A high value increases the area the server must keep active.

Authentication and access

  • online-mode: Keep the authentication policy appropriate for your account setup. Changing it without understanding the identity implications can create duplicate names and weaken access control.
  • Whitelist: Enable the whitelist for a private group before sharing the address. From the server console, the standard commands are whitelist on and whitelist add PlayerName; use the exact in-game names that should be allowed.
  • Give operator privileges only to people who need administrative commands. Test the whitelist with a permitted account and an unlisted account before launch.

Do not publish the address until the whitelist, authentication policy, and operator list are deliberate choices rather than defaults left over from testing.

How much RAM does Tensura Neo Otherworld need?

Published guidance is not an official pack requirement. FadeHost describes 4 GB as a general floor and 6–8 GB for heavier modded packs. Hostd lists a Tensura deployment with 10 GB. Use these figures as planning points, then monitor the actual server under the player count and view distance you expect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Allocation How to interpret it Use case
4 GB General floor cited by FadeHost, not a guaranteed Tensura minimum Only a cautious starting point for a very small test world; leave additional memory for the operating system
6–8 GB FadeHost guidance for heavier modded packs Reasonable planning range for a small private group, subject to CPU, storage, world size, and player activity
10 GB Hostd’s published Tensura deployment recommendation More headroom for a busier or heavier instance; still a vendor example rather than a developer specification

Set a sensible minimum and maximum in the supplied launch script. For example, a host with adequate physical memory might use flags equivalent to -Xms6G -Xmx8G; the exact syntax and existing arguments in your pack script take priority. Never allocate all host memory to Java, because the operating system and file cache also need room.

Signs that memory or CPU is insufficient

  • The process stops with an out-of-memory message or the operating system kills it.
  • Chunks appear slowly, players rubber-band, or the console reports long pauses during exploration.
  • Performance is acceptable with one player but degrades sharply when several players generate new terrain.

Lower view distance, stop unrelated applications, use faster storage, or move to a host with more CPU and memory headroom before blindly increasing the Java maximum. More allocated RAM cannot repair a CPU bottleneck or a network problem.

Open the network safely

  1. Identify the port configured in server.properties and allow that port through the host operating system’s firewall.
  2. If the server is at home, forward the same port from the router to the machine’s local address. Reserve that local address so the forwarding rule does not break after a reboot.
  3. Keep the server process bound to the intended network interface and do not expose unrelated administration services.
  4. Test from a separate client account and, ideally, a different internet connection. A test from the same machine can succeed even when router forwarding is wrong.
  5. Share the address only with whitelisted players. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound connections, a managed host or an appropriate private networking solution may be necessary.

Managed hosts handle the public network layer for you, but you still need to understand the address, port, backup policy, and access controls they provide.

Install the client correctly

  1. Install Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.1 and the NeoForge profile required by the selected Tensura release.
  2. Import the matching client archive from the same release used by the server. The release number, Minecraft version, loader family, and mod files must agree.
  3. Launch the client once locally so its configuration and libraries are generated, then connect using the server address.
  4. Remove client-only shader, HUD, replay, or optimization mods from the server directory. A mod that is valid on a client can still prevent a dedicated server from loading.

If the client reports missing mods or mismatched versions, compare its installed profile with the server’s recorded archive rather than downloading random replacements. For a controlled group, distribute the exact client archive and a short version manifest.

Backups, upgrades, and rollback

Back up the right files

  • Stop the server cleanly before making a full world backup.
  • Copy the world directory, server.properties, whitelist and operator files, pack archive, launch script, and any changed configuration files.
  • Keep at least one copy on a different physical or cloud location. Test opening a backup or restoring it to a temporary directory; an untested copy is only a hope.
  • Use dated folders that include the pack release, such as 2026-10-15-before-upgrade-1.1.2a.

Upgrade without losing the working instance

  1. Announce a maintenance window and stop the current server cleanly.
  2. Make a complete backup and preserve the old server directory unchanged.
  3. Download the new client and matching server pack release. Do not overwrite the old archive.
  4. Install the new pack in a new directory, then copy only the configuration changes you understand.
  5. Start the new instance with a test copy of the world first. Check the console, player connection, and essential progression before switching the public address.
  6. If the new release fails, stop it and restore the previous directory and backup rather than mixing files between releases.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting

Self-hosting gives you direct control over files, upgrades, ports, backups, and the machine itself. It also makes you responsible for Java, firewall rules, router configuration, operating-system updates, storage failures, and recovery.

Managed services reduce the infrastructure work. Modrinth Hosting advertises integrated modpack installation and NeoForge support, describing the service as “Find a modpack. Now it’s a server.” Specialist pages from FadeHost and Hostd advertise preconfigured Tensura Neo Otherworld deployments. A one-click installer can save time, but it does not remove the need to verify the exact pack release or maintain independent backups.

Decision point Self-hosting Managed hosting
Setup effort You install Java, extract the pack, configure scripts, and manage networking Panel or provider may automate installation and public networking
Control Full access to files, scripts, ports, and upgrade timing Subject to panel permissions, provider policies, and supported loaders
Monthly cost Uses your existing hardware and electricity; costs vary by equipment and connection Recurring fee based on RAM, CPU, storage, region, and extras
Backups You choose retention and off-machine storage Check whether backups are automatic, how long they are retained, and whether restores cost extra
Performance Depends on your CPU, disk, and other workloads Depends on allocated RAM, CPU policy, contention, and geographic region
Network exposure You configure firewall and router forwarding Provider normally supplies an address and port, but you still configure access controls
Upgrades You can pin any compatible archive and roll back locally Convenient installers may limit versions or apply changes through a panel

Published example and what it does not prove

Hostd’s 2026 listing gives one example of 6 CPU cores, 60 GB NVMe storage, 10 GB RAM, and $27.99 per month. Treat that as a vendor-specific configuration and price at the time of listing, not as a universal requirement or a permanent rate. CPU model, single-thread performance, backup retention, location, and upgrade pricing can matter more than a headline core count.

Questions to ask before buying a server plan

  • Does the listing support Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge, and can it install the exact Tensura release you selected?
  • How much RAM is dedicated, and is the advertised amount a hard allocation or a burst limit?
  • What CPU model or performance policy applies to your instance?
  • How much NVMe or equivalent storage is included, and are backups stored separately?
  • How many backup copies are retained, for how many days, and can you download them?
  • Where is the data center, and what latency should players in your region expect?
  • Can you access a live console, upload the original server pack, edit configuration files, and roll back an update?
  • What are the network, DDoS, cancellation, renewal, and upgrade terms?
  • Will the provider state the supported pack release rather than merely saying “Tensura” or “modded Minecraft”?

Troubleshooting common launch and connection failures

The script exits immediately

Run java -version, confirm Java 21, and launch the script from the extracted server directory. Read the first error in the console or log instead of repeatedly restarting. A missing library, malformed configuration, or wrong working directory is often more useful evidence than the final shutdown line.

The EULA file keeps returning to false

Stop the process, edit the eula.txt generated by the server you are actually launching, save it as plain text, and verify that the script is not pointing to a second directory. Accept the EULA only if you agree to its terms.

Players see a mod or version mismatch

Compare Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge, the pack release, and the installed mod list on both sides. Remove extra client-only files from the server and reinstall the exact matching client archive if necessary.

Players cannot connect from outside the home network

Check the configured port, firewall rule, router forwarding target, and the machine’s current local address. Test from another network, because local connections can work even when inbound forwarding is blocked. If the connection uses carrier-grade NAT, ask your provider about inbound access or use a managed host.

The world lags during exploration

Check CPU load, Java memory use, disk activity, and the number of players generating new terrain. Reduce view distance before increasing memory, close unrelated processes, and move the instance to faster storage or a host with stronger single-thread performance if the CPU remains saturated.

The server crashes after an update

Stop using the modified directory, restore the pre-upgrade backup, and confirm that the client and server archives are the same release. Add changes one at a time in a disposable test copy so the offending mod or configuration can be identified without risking the live world.

Pre-launch checklist

  • Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge are recorded for the chosen release.
  • The client archive and server_pack_1.21.zip (or the server archive belonging to your pinned release) are preserved.
  • Java 21 is the runtime used by the launch script.
  • The EULA is accepted and the server reaches a ready state on a clean second launch.
  • server.properties has an intentional MOTD, difficulty, view distance, and authentication policy.
  • The whitelist contains every intended player, and unnecessary operator privileges are removed.
  • Firewall and router rules expose only the configured Minecraft port.
  • A player from a separate client account has completed a connection test.
  • Memory allocation leaves room for the operating system and has been observed under realistic load.
  • A dated, off-machine backup includes the world, configuration, launch files, and original pack archive.
  • The release number, Java version, loader build, memory flags, and configuration changes are documented for whoever will maintain the server.
