To make one regular golden apple, use a crafting table with 1 apple in the center slot and 8 gold ingots in every surrounding slot. The result is one golden apple. This is a shaped 3×3 recipe, so the placement matters.

How to craft a golden apple step by step
- Get an apple. You need one ordinary apple, not a golden apple or another food item.
- Get eight gold ingots. The recipe consumes eight ingots for every golden apple.
- Open a crafting table. A 2×2 inventory crafting grid is not large enough; this recipe requires the table’s 3×3 grid.
- Fill the outside eight cells. Put one gold ingot in the top-left, top-center, top-right, middle-left, middle-right, bottom-left and bottom-center cells, plus the bottom-right cell.
- Put the apple in the center. The middle cell must contain the apple.
- Take the result. Move the single golden apple from the output slot into your inventory.
Crafting-grid layout and common placement mistakes
The recipe is shaped rather than shapeless. In other words, the game checks the arrangement, not merely whether the ingredients are somewhere in the grid. The apple belongs in the center, while gold forms a complete ring around it.
If the output does not appear
- Check that all eight gold positions are filled; leaving out even one ingot prevents the recipe.
- Confirm that the center item is an ordinary apple.
- Replace nuggets or blocks with gold ingots. They are different item types and are not substitutes in the current standard recipe.
- Use a crafting table rather than the 2×2 personal crafting grid.
- Make sure you are not trying to use an enchanted golden apple as the center ingredient. The recipe starts with a normal apple.
What a regular golden apple does
A regular golden apple is a food item with temporary defensive and healing effects. Minecraft’s official recipe article describes the effects as Absorption I and Regeneration II.
Recommended Free Tools
Microsoft’s Bedrock vanilla item definition records nutrition 4, a regeneration effect with amplifier 1 for 5 seconds, and an absorption effect with amplifier 0 for 120 seconds. Those values are from the Bedrock definition; effect names, durations and behavior can vary by edition or version, so check the rules of the version you are playing when exact timing matters.

You can eat a golden apple even when your hunger bar is full. That makes it useful as an emergency item rather than something you must wait to consume until ordinary hunger is low. Its cost is substantial: every apple requires eight gold ingots.
When to use one
Emergency survival
Keep a golden apple in your hotbar before a dangerous fight, exploration trip or other situation where ordinary food may not be enough. Eating it supplies the listed temporary effects and can give you a recovery window while you retreat or continue fighting.
Planned high-risk encounters
Because the recipe consumes eight ingots, reserve crafted apples for situations where the extra protection and regeneration are worth more than saving the gold for tools, armor, powered rails or other projects. A golden apple is an expensive consumable, not a replacement for carrying normal food.

The ability to eat one at full hunger means you can activate its effects before damage becomes immediately fatal. Do not assume you must first empty part of the hunger bar.
Regular and enchanted golden apples are different items
The recipe above creates only the regular golden apple. It does not create an enchanted golden apple, and adding more gold or changing the arrangement will not upgrade it.
| Feature | Regular golden apple | Enchanted golden apple |
|---|---|---|
| How obtained | Crafted with 1 apple and 8 gold ingots | Found as rare structure loot rather than made with the regular ingot recipe |
| Resource cost | Eight gold ingots and one apple per item | No standard crafting cost established by the cited recipe references |
| Effects | Absorption I and Regeneration II are described for the regular item; Bedrock’s item definition lists the corresponding effect parameters | Its effect set and strength differ from the regular item and depend on the edition or version |
The husbandry reference identifies enchanted apples as rare finds in places such as ominous vaults and ancient cities. Treat them as loot to discover, not as the output of the eight-ingot recipe.

Other ways to obtain a regular golden apple
Golden apples can also appear in structure chests. Chest generation is rare and unreliable, so it is not a dependable way to obtain a particular number of apples. Crafting is predictable whenever you have an apple and eight gold ingots.
The regular golden apple is renewable in ordinary survival play: apples and gold can both be replenished through the game’s normal resource systems. That makes repeated crafting possible, although the gold requirement still makes each item costly.

For several apples
Multiply both ingredients by the number of apples you want. For example, two golden apples require two apples and sixteen gold ingots; three require three apples and twenty-four ingots. The same center-and-ring pattern is used for every craft.

Before spending your ingots, decide whether the apple is for immediate survival, a planned dangerous expedition or storage as an emergency reserve. The hunger-management guidance characterizes the item as expensive specifically because of its eight-ingot cost.
Edition and version notes
The 1-apple-plus-8-ingot recipe is the current standard recipe described by the cited Minecraft references. Exact effect readouts can differ between Java and Bedrock and between game versions. If you need precise duration or amplifier information, use the item behavior for your edition; the Bedrock definition accessed on October 15, 2026 lists regeneration for 5 seconds and absorption for 120 seconds with the amplifier values noted above.
Do not transfer Bedrock’s numeric item-definition fields directly to another edition without checking that edition’s documentation. The recipe itself and the distinction between regular and enchanted apples are separate from those effect-parameter differences.
