Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallYou can host a persistent The Forest dedicated server with Valve’s separate Steam tool (app ID 556450), not by launching the ordinary game app (ID 242760). Install the tool on a Windows machine, let its first launch create Server.cfg, set the identity, save and gameplay options, then forward the configured ports to that machine. The procedure below follows the most detailed published guide, which was updated January 23, 2019 for game version v1.07; treat its defaults and command names as a baseline to verify in the build you download in 2026.
What you are installing
The dedicated server is distributed as its own Steam application. Steam app ID 556450 identifies the server tool, while The Forest game is app ID 242760. They are related but not interchangeable: installing the game alone does not give you the dedicated-server executable, and installing the tool does not provide a playable client for your guests.

Endnight introduced the tool in an April 2017 announcement as experimental and stressed that a valid configuration was required. A Steam Community “Dedicated Server Tutorial” supplied the detailed setup procedure and was last updated January 23, 2019, with the game version shown as v1.07. SteamDB’s record checked October 13, 2026 lists the tool as released, free to download and Windows-supported. Its public-branch build timestamp is January 21, 2019. A SteamDB record update in September 2026 does not mean that a new server binary was released, so do not assume the old tutorial has been freshly tested.
Choose a host machine before installing
The host must remain powered on and connected whenever you want the world to be available. A spare Windows PC is the clearest fit because the indexed tool lists Windows support. Keep the machine on the same local network as the router that will forward traffic, and give it a consistent local address so forwarding does not break after a reboot.

- Strategic 2-Player Trick-Taking: Master the art of winning just enough tricks without overcommitting, using clever card play and tactical decision-making to outmaneuver your opponent
- New Module Variations: Three game modules (special cards, goal cards, poison cards) offer endless strategic combinations, keeping gameplay fresh and exciting for repeated plays
- Premium Deluxe Components: Foil-stamped cards, all-new fairy-tale illustrations, and acrylic scoring tokens deliver a visually stunning and tactile experience that enhances every game
- Quick 30-Minute Gameplay: Perfect for busy couples seeking quality time together, delivering strategic depth and meaningful competition in a compact, elegant format
- Complete Game Package: Includes 33 base cards, nine special cards, 16 goal cards, three poison cards, two reference cards, 17 scoring tokens, and comprehensive rulebook
- Persistent storage: reserve space for the server installation, configuration and world saves. Back up the save and configuration directories before changing versions or moving hosts.
- Stable networking: wired Ethernet is preferable for a machine that will run continuously, but the essential requirement is a reliable route through your router.
- Administrative access: you need permission to install Steam software, create firewall rules and edit the router’s port-forwarding table.
- A separate game client: players still join with their normal copy of The Forest; the dedicated tool is the always-on server process.
Do not expose a server by guessing at ports or by forwarding traffic to a changing DHCP address. Record the host’s local address (for example, 192.168.1.50) and use that same address in the server configuration and router rule.
Install the dedicated-server tool
Graphical installation through Steam
- Open the Steam desktop client and sign in to the account that will download the server tool.
- Open Library, use the library filter that includes Tools, and locate The Forest Dedicated Server. Historical Endnight instructions identified the path as Steam Library → Tools.
- Select the tool and choose Install. Choose a drive that will remain mounted and available to the host account.
- After installation, open the tool’s installation folder from Steam’s properties menu. Keep this path available; you may need it when creating a shortcut or checking log files.
Steam’s labels can change. If the tool is not visible, clear the library’s game-only filter and search for app ID 556450. Confirm that the item is the dedicated server rather than the ordinary game.
Command-line installation with SteamCMD
The same tutorial documents a SteamCMD route for operators who do not want the Steam desktop client. Install SteamCMD from Valve’s current distribution, open a command prompt in its directory, and authenticate as required by SteamCMD. The historical procedure then downloads app 556450. Because that guide and the public server build date from 2019, do not assume every command or authentication step still succeeds unchanged in 2026; use the downloaded tool’s current files and SteamCMD’s own output to correct path or login prompts.

The account name above is an example token inside a command template, not a credential to publish. If SteamCMD reports that an app, branch or login option is invalid, stop and read the exact error rather than repeatedly running an obsolete command. The objective is a complete download of app 556450; the graphical Steam route is the simpler fallback.
Perform the first launch and find Server.cfg
The tutorial says the configuration file is generated automatically the first time the server starts. On Windows, it gives this path:
C:UsersUSERAppDataLocalLowSKSTheForestDedicatedServerdsServer.cfg
Replace USER with the Windows account that actually launches the server. If the file is not present, launch the dedicated server once, allow it to create its folders, stop it cleanly, and then inspect the path again. Windows may hide AppData, so enable hidden items in File Explorer or paste the path into the address bar.

- Balanced 2-Player Experience: Expertly designed trick-taking mechanics ensure neither player gains unfair advantage, rewarding strategic thinking and creating intense memorable moments every game
The guide supports two configuration methods: command-line parameters and entries in Server.cfg. When both specify the same setting, command-line parameters override the file value. That precedence is useful for testing, but it can also make an apparently correct file seem ineffective. Keep a written record of the shortcut or batch command you use so you know which values are overriding the file.
Set identity, player access and world behavior
Open the generated file in a text editor while the server is stopped. The exact key names and defaults should be checked against the file created by your installed build; the following are the settings covered by the 2019 tutorial.
| Setting | What it controls | Documented baseline and cautions |
|---|---|---|
| Server name | The name players see when browsing or joining. | Choose a distinctive name and avoid impersonating another community. |
| Maximum players | How many clients the server accepts. | The tutorial lists a default maximum of 8. Treat that as a guide-era default, not a current independent capacity test. |
| Password and administrator password | Restricts entry and separates routine joining from administrative access. | Use long, different values. Never post either password in a public server listing. |
| Difficulty | Selects the world’s difficulty mode. | Set it before creating a new world if you want a predictable starting rule set. |
| New or continued game | Chooses whether the process initializes a new world or resumes an existing one. | Use the continuation option only when the corresponding save exists. |
| Save slot | Selects the numbered world slot. | The tutorial documents slots 1 through 5. Confirm the available values in your generated file. |
| Autosave interval | How often the world writes progress automatically. | Choose a practical interval and still make independent backups before maintenance. |
| Logging | Controls diagnostic and event output. | Enable useful logs while diagnosing joins or crashes, then review file growth. |
| VAC and game modes | Additional security or mode behavior exposed by the configuration. | Use the keys and spelling present in the generated file; do not copy an unverified key from a different version. |
Save a copy of Server.cfg before experimenting. A backup lets you compare a working configuration with a later change and makes migration to another machine less risky.
An illustrative launch command
The tutorial gives a launch string containing options for the local address, three ports, name, player count, difficulty, initialization type and save slot. This example shows the shape with ordinary test values; verify the executable name and option spelling in the files you installed before relying on it:
TheForestDedicatedServer.exe -serverip 192.168.1.50 -serversteamport 8766 -servergameport 27015 -serverqueryport 27016 -servername "Forest Cabin" -serverplayers 8 -difficulty Normal -inittype Continue -slot 1
Values supplied this way take precedence over matching entries in Server.cfg. If you edit the file but the server still starts with the old name or slot, remove the conflicting command-line option or update it deliberately. Do not copy the example’s local address unless it is the address assigned to your host.
Configure the Steam server account token
The tutorial describes creating a Steam game-server account ID for app 242760 through Steam’s Game Server Account Management and placing the resulting login token in the serverSteamAccount configuration entry or its matching launch parameter. The token is account data: keep it private, restrict access to the configuration file and revoke or replace it if you disclose it.

Do not paste a real token into a forum post, support ticket or example command. A safe local placeholder inside a private file can look like serverSteamAccount=PASTE_TOKEN_HERE until you replace it. The archived community Docker project specifically warns against sharing the token and notes that omitting token or configuration data can affect intended save behavior. Treat that warning as a reason to verify your own save path and login state, not as proof of a current server bug.
Open the documented ports for players outside your home
The 2019 guide identifies three default communication ports:
| Purpose | Guide-era default | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Steam communication | 8766 |
Configure the server and forward the port to the host. |
| Game communication | 27015 |
Configure the server and forward the port to the host. |
| Query communication | 27016 |
Configure the server and forward the port to the host. |
The guide instructs opening all three for both TCP and UDP in the router and the host firewall when people will connect across networks. These are documented defaults, not a guarantee that every downloaded build uses them. Read the generated configuration or startup log first; if you change a port, use the same value in the server, firewall and router.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Assign or reserve a stable local address for the Windows host, such as
192.168.1.50. - Set the server’s
serverIPto that local-network address when a router is involved, as the tutorial directs. - Create router forwarding rules for the configured Steam, game and query ports, selecting both TCP and UDP and targeting the host’s local address.
- Create corresponding inbound Windows Firewall rules for the server executable or for those TCP/UDP ports.
- Start the server and confirm that it binds to the intended address and ports in its log.
- Give remote players your public address and the server’s configured join information, not the private
192.168.x.xaddress.
Players on the same home network may be able to connect using the local address, while players elsewhere need the network’s public address. If remote joins fail, check that the router forwards to the correct machine, that the host firewall permits both protocols, and that your internet connection permits inbound traffic. Some internet providers place customers behind carrier-grade NAT; in that case, ordinary home port forwarding cannot receive unsolicited connections and you will need a reachable network or a managed host.
Test locally before inviting remote players
Start with one client on the same network as the server. This isolates configuration errors from router and internet issues. Check the server list or direct-join method provided by the game, use the local address where appropriate, and confirm that the world loads into the intended slot and mode.
- Verify the displayed server name and password behavior.
- Confirm that a test player can connect, move, save and reconnect.
- Stop the server cleanly and restart it to confirm that a continued game resumes rather than creating a new world.
- Inspect the log for bind failures, rejected connections or a port already in use.
Only after the local test succeeds should you test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot. Testing from inside the same LAN can be misleading on routers that do not support NAT loopback.

Back up saves and migrate safely
The dedicated server’s persistence is valuable only if the save directory survives a crash or host replacement. Before changing configuration, moving the installation or switching between self-hosting and a provider, stop the server and copy the entire directory under AppDataLocalLowSKSTheForestDedicatedServerds, including the save data and Server.cfg. Store at least one copy outside the live machine.
- Announce a maintenance stop so players leave the world normally.
- Stop the server process and wait for it to close.
- Copy the
dsdirectory to dated backup storage. - Record the active save slot, initialization mode, ports and server name.
- After migration, restore the files, check permissions and start with the same continuation and slot settings.
- Join with a test account before reopening the server to everyone.
Never overwrite the only known-good backup with a newly generated empty configuration. Keep the token out of shared backup archives unless the archive is encrypted and access-controlled.

The tool is missing from Steam
Clear any “Games only” library filter, search the Tools category and look for app ID 556450. If you used SteamCMD, check its install directory and the command output for a failed login or incomplete download. The server tool is separate from app 242760.
The server starts but players cannot see or join it
Confirm the process is listening on the configured ports, then compare those values with the router and firewall rules. Ensure forwarding targets the host’s current local address and that both TCP and UDP rules exist. A remote test must use the public address; the local address belongs only inside the home network.
Changes in Server.cfg seem ignored
Look for a shortcut, batch file or service definition that passes the same setting on the command line. The tutorial states that command-line parameters override matching file values. Remove the duplicate option or change it intentionally, then restart the server.

A historical command does not work
The detailed procedure is dated January 2019 and marked v1.07. Compare the downloaded build’s generated configuration and startup output with the old command, correcting option names only when the installed files support them. Do not infer a new build from SteamDB’s September 2026 record update; its listed public-branch build timestamp remains January 21, 2019.
Linux and Docker: possible, but not an established current native option
An archived community project documents running the Windows server through Docker and Wine, including container port mappings and token handling. Its repository was archived March 19, 2026, while SteamDB lists Windows support for app 556450. Those facts do not establish a currently maintained native Linux server.
If you operate Linux, treat the container project as an archived reference rather than a supported 2026 product. Expect to adapt its image, paths and launch scripts, test save persistence and map every configured port yourself. A Windows host, virtual machine or managed service is less experimental when you need predictable maintenance and support.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting
A managed game-server host can remove router configuration and the need to leave a personal PC running, but it does not automatically solve compatibility or save migration. The available material does not establish current United States providers, prices, plan limits or affiliate terms, so evaluate any company using its live documentation rather than an old directory listing.
| Decision factor | Self-hosted Windows machine | Managed server |
|---|---|---|
| Machine maintenance | You install updates, monitor crashes, maintain storage and keep the host powered. | The provider maintains the underlying machine; you still manage the game configuration. |
| Networking | You set the local address, firewall and router forwarding, and must have a reachable public connection. | The provider normally supplies a reachable endpoint, subject to its network design. |
| Uptime | Depends on your electricity, internet service and operating-system restarts. | Usually designed for continuous operation, but the actual guarantee and maintenance windows are provider-specific. |
| Control | Direct access to files, logs, ports, backups and launch arguments. | Control depends on the panel, file access and supported settings offered by the provider. |
| Latency | Players connect to your home location; nearby players may benefit, while distant players may not. | You can often select a data-center region, but verify the available locations and network quality. |
| Support | You diagnose the server, router and operating system yourself. | Support may cover the platform, but game-specific troubleshooting and save recovery policies vary. |
| Cost | No current rental price is required, but you bear electricity, hardware and internet costs. | Compare the provider’s current recurring price, player limits, storage, backups and cancellation terms. |
Choose self-hosting when you want full file and network control and can maintain a Windows machine. Choose managed hosting when router access, carrier-grade NAT, uptime or routine administration is the problem you most want removed. In either case, confirm that the service supports app 556450, allows access to your save files and explains how backups and migration work.
If you would rather skip router forwarding and carrier-grade NAT, Godlike.Host offers The Forest server hosting with a Pterodactyl-based game panel, up to three free backups a day with restore, free DDoS protection, SFTP/FTP file access and 10 data-center locations to choose from; see the current plans for details.
Maintenance checklist
- Keep a dated backup of the
dsdirectory before changing the server or host. - Document the active save slot, initialization mode, server name and configured ports.
- Review the startup log after every update or configuration change.
- Keep router and firewall rules aligned with the values in the installed configuration.
- Protect the Steam server account token and replace it if exposed.
- Restart after a game or server update and test a local join before announcing availability.
- Remember that historical Endnight announcements requested operators to restart and update after patches; those advisories were tied to their 2017–2018 releases, not a blanket 2026 policy.
What to verify before calling the server ready
You are ready to invite players when the installed tool starts without bind errors, the generated configuration contains the intended identity and save settings, a local client can join and reconnect to the same world, and a remote test reaches the host through the configured public address. If any one of those checks fails, fix it before adding more players; a successful local launch alone does not prove that internet access or persistence is working.
