You can run the free server application on your own Windows machine or rent managed V Rising server hosting. Choose self-hosting when you want control and can handle updates, backups and restarts; choose a managed service when you want those jobs handled for you.

What the official V Rising server requirements actually say
The current Stunlock Studios instructions for the PC 1.1.x dedicated server establish three firm facts:

- The dedicated-server application is currently available only for Windows.
- You can download it at no cost through Steam’s Tools section. SteamCMD users are given dedicated-server AppID
1829350. - The instructions do not state a minimum or recommended amount of RAM, a CPU requirement, or a tested player capacity.
That third point is the one most hardware guides get wrong. A number copied from the game’s system-requirements page is not automatically a server requirement. Stunlock’s current server documentation contains no dedicated-server sizing table, no workload benchmark by number of players, and no recommendation tied to world settings.

Stunlock’s repository separates current 1.1.x instructions from legacy 1.0.x and earlier documentation. Use the branch that matches the version you intend to operate; commands, paths and supported platforms can change between versions.
Server requirements versus game-client requirements
The V Rising client and the dedicated server are different workloads. The client renders the game on a player’s PC. The server simulates the world, accepts connections and saves state. Their specifications must therefore be kept separate.

Stunlock notes that client requirements may change. The conflicting client storage figures are another reason not to turn a client listing into a server specification. Check the live listing and leave room for saves, logs, updates and backups when planning a machine.
How much RAM does a V Rising server need?
There is no official answer in gigabytes. Stunlock has not published a dedicated-server minimum, recommendation or memory benchmark. The frequently quoted 12 GB figure is the client requirement from the May 7, 2024 system-requirements article and should not be presented as the amount a server needs.

A practical way to size memory
For a self-hosted server, treat RAM as an operating margin rather than a fixed V Rising number. The machine must hold Windows, the server process, your administration tools and any other services. Leave headroom so normal usage does not force Windows to page data to disk.
- Start with a clean Windows host and record memory use while it is idle.
- Launch the dedicated server with the world and settings you actually plan to use.
- Invite the largest group you expect, then observe committed memory and available RAM during exploration, combat, travel and a save.
- Repeat the observation after several hours and during the busiest period. A single quiet reading is not a capacity test.
- Add headroom for updates, logs, backups and other software. If available memory repeatedly approaches zero or paging becomes visible, move the server to a larger machine or reduce competing workloads.
This measurement-based approach is more defensible than claiming that 12 GB, 16 GB or any other number is an official server requirement. A small private world and a busy public world can produce very different results, and the official documentation does not publish a player-count-to-RAM formula.
What CPU do you need for a V Rising server?
Again, no dedicated-server CPU model or minimum clock speed is documented. The Intel Core i5-6600, Ryzen 5 1500X, i5-11600K and Ryzen 5 5600X named by Stunlock are client examples. They are not certification levels for a server host.

That is a practical category, not a Stunlock recommendation. Count the server’s actual load rather than the number printed on a processor badge.

CPU checks that matter in operation
- Watch total utilization and per-core utilization while players are active. A low overall percentage can hide one saturated core.
- Check for sustained frequency drops caused by heat or power limits; a nominal clock speed is not a guarantee under load.
- Look for simulation or tick delays, delayed responses and save stalls during the busiest moments.
- On a shared host, confirm how much CPU time is actually allocated to your instance instead of assuming the provider’s advertised processor model is dedicated to you.
Do not describe the example launch value -maxUsers 60 as proof that a particular CPU can support 60 players. It is a configuration example, not a benchmark. The same applies to -fps 30: it demonstrates a setting, not a tested hardware target.
Windows and version prerequisites
The current PC dedicated-server application is documented as Windows-only. If you are planning a Linux machine, container or another platform, do not treat an unofficial workaround as a supported requirement; verify compatibility against the current 1.1.x instructions before committing to that design.
The server is distributed through Steam’s Tools section. SteamCMD users should use the dedicated-server AppID 1829350, not the client AppID. Keep the server on the current documentation branch for the version you intend to run.
How to set up a self-hosted server
- Prepare a Windows host. Use a machine that can remain online and has a stable network connection. Reserve disk space for the installation, world saves, logs, updates and backups; the client storage figures do not define server storage.
- Install the dedicated-server tool. In Steam, open Library, enable the Tools filter and install the V Rising dedicated-server application. With SteamCMD, install AppID
1829350. - Locate the configuration files. The installation supplies
ServerHostSettings.jsonandServerGameSettings.json. Use the documented settings path for local overrides instead of editing a default that may be replaced during an update. - Separate data when necessary. Use
-persistentDataPathto move server data. Stunlock says this is required when multiple servers share one host so that each instance keeps separate settings and saves. - Set network and gameplay options. The example launch script shows options for ports, save count and save interval, user cap, FPS and persistent data. Choose values for your community; none of the example values is a hardware guarantee.
- Open and verify the required network access. Apply the ports from your configuration to the Windows firewall and router or hosting network, then test from outside the local network.
- Test before inviting everyone. Connect with a small group, create and reload a save, stop and restart the process, and confirm that the world and settings return correctly.
Self-hosting or managed V Rising server hosting?
Both approaches run the same kind of dedicated world, but they transfer different responsibilities to you.

What managed hosting includes
Stunlock’s hosting help page names PocketHost as a service where readers can rent and manage a server. The listed controls include viewing status, changing basic settings, reading logs, editing configuration files, restarting and updating, and adding permissions for other users. Those details describe the available management functions; they do not establish comparative performance, uptime, pricing or a guaranteed hardware allocation.

Questions to ask any host before paying
- How much RAM is allocated to the instance, and is it guaranteed or shared?
- What CPU allocation is provided: dedicated cores, a percentage of a core, or a shared plan?
- Where are the machine and game server located, and can the location be changed?
- How are world saves backed up, how long are backups retained, and can you download them?
- Who performs game updates, and can you choose the maintenance window?
- What happens when your world exceeds the plan’s storage or resource limit?
- Can you export the configuration and save files if you cancel?
Maintenance, backups and reliability
Self-hosting is not finished when the first player connects. Stunlock recommends updating after software changes and restarting periodically, with a daily restart during a low-population period recommended. Some hosting services update only after a restart, so a server that is left running indefinitely may not be on the version you expect.

Keep a backup routine separate from the live save. Before an update or configuration change, stop the server cleanly, copy the world data and record the version. Test restoring a copy on a separate path; a backup that has never been restored is only an assumption. If several instances run on one Windows machine, give each one its own persistent data path and backup set.

Troubleshooting common requirement mistakes
The server will not start
Confirm that you installed the dedicated-server tool rather than the game client, that the Windows installation is current, and that your launch path points to the intended settings and persistent-data directories. Review the server log for a malformed JSON file or a port already in use.
Players cannot connect
Check the configured ports, Windows Firewall rules and router forwarding. Test from an external connection instead of relying on a local connection, which can succeed even when internet access is blocked.
Memory usage keeps growing or Windows starts paging
Record usage over a full active session, close unrelated services, and compare the result with available physical memory. If the host cannot maintain headroom, move the server to a larger machine or a plan with a confirmed allocation. Do not “solve” the issue by relabeling the 12 GB client figure as an official server target.

Players experience lag despite low total CPU use
Inspect per-core utilization, clock throttling, disk activity during saves and contention from other processes. On rented hosting, ask the provider whether the instance is oversubscribed and what CPU share is guaranteed.
Bottom line for choosing hardware or hosting
For V Rising 1.1.x on PC, the only clear platform requirement in the current dedicated-server instructions is Windows availability. Stunlock does not publish server RAM or CPU requirements, so there is no authoritative “12 GB server,” processor model or 60-player hardware answer. Use the 12 GB and named CPU values only when discussing the game client.
If you already own a Windows machine, measure memory, per-core CPU use, save behavior and network performance with your expected group. If you want predictable administration rather than hardware ownership, rent a managed server and obtain its real CPU, RAM, backup, location and upgrade terms before purchase. In either case, keep the 1.1.x documentation current, separate each server’s data path, update regularly and schedule restarts.
