The practical sequence is: install Java, download and extract the matching server pack, launch ServerStart.bat or ServerStart.sh, accept the EULA, configure server.properties, open the server to your players, and establish backups before changing versions.

What you need before installing
Enhanced Vanilla is a Fabric modpack for Minecraft 1.18.2. The main 1.18.2 release identified by the project is server pack version 1.4.2b, dated September 11, 2022. The CurseForge project page recorded 1,765,174 downloads for the project metadata shown with that release. Your server and every player’s client must use the same pack release; a different patch or loader version can produce a mod-list or registry mismatch.
Java requirement
Install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime. Valhelsia’s documentation states that packs for Minecraft 1.17 and later, including Enhanced Vanilla, require Java 17. A newer or older Java installation can cause the server to close immediately or fail while loading mods, so verify the runtime that your launch script will actually find.

Leave enough physical memory for the operating system and other services. Giving Java every available gigabyte can make the machine less stable, even when the pack itself has sufficient heap.
Hardware and storage
- Use a 64-bit operating system and a current machine that can keep the Java process running continuously.
- Reserve free disk space for the world, player data, logs, backups and any pregenerated terrain. A 1,000-block radius can consume substantial storage depending on terrain and mod data.
- Use a wired or otherwise stable network connection when possible, especially for a home-hosted server.
Self-hosting or managed hosting?
Self-hosting avoids a recurring hosting bill, but you become responsible for Java, operating-system updates, backups, firewall rules, router forwarding, storage and uptime. A managed host handles much of that through a control panel, but you pay for the service and remain responsible for pack configuration, world backups and version decisions. Valhelsia’s server guide recommends managed hosting for an easy, reliable setup and separately states that at least 4 GB is recommended for five to seven players. Treat any provider’s pricing, region, promotion and affiliate terms as time-sensitive.

Choose self-hosting when you are comfortable administering Java and networking or want complete control. Choose managed hosting when avoiding router configuration and 24-hour home uptime is worth the recurring cost.
Install 64-bit Java 17
Windows
Install a 64-bit Java 17 distribution, then open a new Command Prompt or PowerShell window. The new shell matters because it refreshes the system path after installation.
Ubuntu or Debian
Valhelsia’s Linux instructions use:
sudo apt-get install openjdk-17-jreAfter installation, verify the version:
java --versionFedora, RHEL or CentOS
The documented command is:
su -c "yum install java-1.17.0-openjdk"Run java --version again. Confirm that it reports Java 17 and that the process is 64-bit. If multiple Java versions are installed, select Java 17 as the runtime used by the server script rather than relying on an unverified system default.
Download the correct server pack
- Open the official Valhelsia project page on CurseForge and select the Files tab.
- Locate the Additional Files entry for the Minecraft 1.18.2 Fabric server pack.
- Download version 1.4.2b, the project’s main 1.18.2 release.
- Create a dedicated server directory and extract the complete archive into it. Do not run the server from a temporary downloads folder.
Install the corresponding client pack on every player’s computer. Keep the server pack, client pack, Minecraft version and Fabric version aligned. Do not mix files from a different Enhanced Vanilla release into this directory unless the release instructions explicitly require it.

Start the server and accept the EULA
Windows
- Open the extracted server directory.
- Double-click
ServerStart.bat, or run it from a command prompt so you can read the log. - The first launch normally creates files and then stops because the Minecraft EULA has not been accepted.
- Open
eula.txt, read the EULA, and changeeula=falsetoeula=trueonly if you agree to it. - Run
ServerStart.batagain.
Linux or macOS
- Open a terminal in the server directory.
- Make the script executable if necessary, for example with
chmod +x ServerStart.sh. - Run
./ServerStart.sh. - After the first run creates
eula.txtand exits, edit the file and changeeula=falsetoeula=trueafter reading the EULA. - Launch
./ServerStart.shagain.
Keep the terminal or console available during initial setup. The log identifies Java errors, missing files and mod-loading failures more precisely than a window that simply disappears.
Set the memory allocation
Open ServerStart.bat on Windows or ServerStart.sh on Linux/macOS in a text editor. Near the top, find the ALLOCATED_RAM value and set it to the amount you intend to give the server. Start with 4 GB only when the machine and player count are modest; 5 GB is the documented recommendation for Enhanced Vanilla. Increase allocation only when the host has adequate unused memory.
Memory is not a substitute for CPU time or storage. Large view distances, many loaded chunks, chunk loaders and several players exploring in different directions can increase both memory pressure and tick time. If the process is killed by the operating system, inspect system memory as well as the value in the launch script.
Configure server.properties
After the second launch creates the normal server files, stop the server cleanly and open server.properties. Use a plain-text editor and preserve the file’s key=value format.
Core settings to review
- Server name: Set the message players should see in the multiplayer list.
- Difficulty: Select the difficulty appropriate for your group.
- Whitelist: Enable it for a private group, then add players from the server console or chat.
- View distance: Keep it conservative until performance is proven; higher values make the server load and retain more chunks.
- Server port: Leave the configured port unchanged unless you have a specific networking reason to alter it. Any changed port must also be reflected in firewall and router rules.
Allow flight for mod compatibility
Valhelsia’s guide advises changing allow-flight=false to allow-flight=true on modded servers to prevent problems with some mods. This setting does not grant creative flight to ordinary players; it prevents the server’s movement check from incorrectly kicking mod-assisted movement.
World and level type
Enhanced Vanilla’s documented level types use vanilla defaults. Leave the level type at its default unless you have a specific, compatible reason to change it. If you change a world-generation setting, stop the server and delete the existing world folder before the next launch. A server cannot retroactively apply many generation settings to chunks that already exist.

Whitelist administration
With the whitelist enabled, add the administrator first so you do not lock yourself out:
/whitelist add YourPlayerNameReplace YourPlayerName with the exact Minecraft account name. Add the rest of the group after they have installed the matching client pack.
Make a home server reachable
- Give the server a fixed local address or a dependable DHCP reservation so router rules do not point to a different machine later.
- Allow the Java server process and its configured Minecraft port through the operating system firewall.
- Forward that same port from the router to the server’s local address.
- Provide players with the public address and port, unless your network supplies a separate hostname.
- Test from outside the home network. A connection that works only from the host machine does not prove that forwarding is correct.
The Valhelsia guide assumes familiarity with standard vanilla server networking. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, inbound forwarding may not work without a provider-side option or a different hosting arrangement. Never expose unrelated administration panels or file shares when opening a game port.
Pregenerate terrain with Chunky
The Enhanced Vanilla server pack includes Chunky Pregenerator. Pregeneration creates terrain before players reach it, reducing the large generation spikes that commonly occur when several players explore fresh areas at once. It also consumes CPU time and storage, so select a radius that your machine can finish and retain.
From the server console or an authorized operator account, Valhelsia’s example is:
/chunky radius 1000
/chunky startThis targets a 1,000-block radius around the origin. The command is an example, not a required size. A smaller radius is sensible for a short-term world or a machine with limited disk space; a larger radius increases preparation time and storage requirements. Run pregeneration when players are offline or during a maintenance window, monitor the console, and ensure the server has enough free disk space before starting.

Give players the right client setup
- Install Minecraft 1.18.2, the Fabric loader expected by the pack, and the same Enhanced Vanilla release as the server.
- Do not add or remove mods casually. Even a seemingly harmless client-only change can make troubleshooting harder; a required server mod mismatch will prevent login.
- Share the server address, configured port and any whitelist name requirements separately from the pack files.
- Ask players to fully close other Minecraft instances before launching the pack if the launcher reports a file or version lock.
Backups and safe updates
Back up before changing the pack, loader, configuration or world. At minimum, retain a complete copy of the world folder and the server directory’s intentional configuration and script changes. Store a backup somewhere other than the live server machine when possible, and periodically test that it can be opened.
Documented folder-replacement update process
- Read the new release changelog first. Release-specific warnings take precedence over this general procedure.
- Stop the running server and confirm that the Java process has exited.
- Make a complete backup of the server directory, especially the world and custom configuration.
- When present, remove the old
config,defaultconfigs,libraries,openloader,mods,kubejsandscriptsfolders. - Remove the old loader jar as directed by the update instructions.
- Copy the new server-pack contents into the server directory.
- Restore intentional custom changes, such as your launch-script memory value, whitelist and selected server properties. Do not blindly copy obsolete mod configuration into a new release.
- Launch the updated server and watch the log for migration messages, missing dependencies or world errors before allowing players to connect.
Never overwrite a working world without a restorable backup. If the new release fails, stop it, preserve the error log, restore the backup and investigate the changelog before trying again.

The server closes immediately
Run java --version in the same environment used to launch the server and confirm 64-bit Java 17. Wrong Java is identified by Valhelsia as a common cause. Also launch from a terminal so you can read the first error, check that the archive was fully extracted, and confirm that the script is being run from the server directory.
Out-of-memory errors or slow world creation
Move the allocation toward the documented 5 GB recommendation if the host has sufficient physical memory. Check how many players are online, how many chunks are loaded, whether chunk loaders are active and whether terrain is being generated continuously. Lowering view distance and pregenerating a manageable area can reduce sudden workload, but do not increase Java heap until the operating system still has room.

- Confirm that the server process has reached its ready state and is listening on the configured port.
- Check the operating-system firewall and router forwarding destination.
- Verify that players are using the public address when connecting from outside the home network.
- Confirm the address and port have not changed.
- Check that every client uses the same Minecraft, Fabric and Enhanced Vanilla versions.
Mod or registry mismatch
Compare the exact release installed on the server with every player’s client. Reinstall the official client pack rather than copying random mods into it. If the server was updated, make sure the update replaced the required libraries and loader files as instructed.
New world settings do not appear
Stop the server, back up the current world, delete the existing world folder and start again. World-generation settings affect newly generated chunks; retaining the old folder means the server continues using the previous world data.

Lag begins after an update
Check whether the release has a known compatibility warning, move to the latest compatible Enhanced Vanilla release, verify the memory allocation and inspect the server log for repeated errors. Consider pregenerating terrain and the performance tools recommended in Valhelsia’s guide after confirming that the pack version itself is supported.

Common questions
Can I run Enhanced Vanilla on Java 8 or Java 11?
No. Valhelsia documents Java 17 for Minecraft 1.17-and-later packs, which includes Enhanced Vanilla 1.18.2. Verify the active runtime with java --version.
Is 4 GB enough?
It is the documented minimum and is described as suitable for smooth operation with five to seven players under the guide’s assumptions. Five GB is the official recommendation, and heavier exploration, chunk loaders or higher settings can require more.
Do I need to pregenerate the whole world?
No. Choose a radius that matches your group’s likely travel area and the machine’s storage and CPU budget. The documented 1,000-block example is a starting point, not a universal requirement.
Why did changing a world option do nothing?
Existing chunks retain their generated data. Apply the setting to a new world by stopping the server, backing up, deleting the current world folder and launching again.
