To host a Vault Hunters 3rd Edition server, download the dedicated Vault-Hunters-3rd-Edition-3.21.7-server-files.zip, run it with Minecraft 1.18.2 and Forge, allocate memory deliberately, and have every player install the matching Vault Hunters Third Edition-3.21.7.zip client pack. You can run the server on a home computer, VPS, or dedicated machine, use Docker, or choose a managed host. The correct server archive and matching client version matter more than any other setup decision.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
What you need before hosting
Vault Hunters Third Edition is a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.18.2. Its central gameplay takes place in procedurally generated Vaults containing unique gear, mobs, currency, bosses, 25 artifacts, and a final challenge. Multiplayer is built around running Vaults together and sharing research and unlocks.

- Server pack: Vault-Hunters-3rd-Edition-3.21.7-server-files.zip, released July 30, 2026.
- Client pack: Vault Hunters Third Edition-3.21.7.zip, released July 28, 2026.
- Minecraft: Java Edition 1.18.2.
- Mod loader: Forge.
- Memory reference: the official player instructions specify 8192 MB for the modpack; the documented Docker deployment uses 8G initial and 16G maximum server memory.
- Storage: enough free disk space for the extracted server, generated chunks, logs, backups, and future updates. The project does not publish a universal capacity figure, so leave substantial headroom rather than sizing only for the initial ZIP.
CPU speed, storage performance, player count, exploration distance, and the number of loaded chunks all affect real requirements. The published memory numbers are starting points, not a guarantee for every world or group.
Choose a hosting model
Your first decision is whether you want convenience or complete control. A managed host supplies a public endpoint and a control panel, while self-hosting makes you responsible for the operating system, network, updates, backups, and uptime.
#1 Best Overall
| Consideration | Managed host | Self-hosted or Docker |
|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | Usually guided or automated; confirm current Vault Hunters 3rd Edition support. | Download, extract, configure, accept the EULA, and launch the supplied files. |
| Control | Limited to the provider panel and plan limits. | Full control of files, JVM settings, worlds, mods, and configuration. |
| Maintenance | The provider may automate modpack installation and updates; confirm exactly what is included. | You perform updates, backups, troubleshooting, and security maintenance. |
| Networking | The provider supplies a public endpoint; region and latency still matter. | You handle firewall rules, router forwarding, DNS, and availability. |
| Cost | Recurring subscription; current price, memory, locations, slots, and backup terms vary. | Existing hardware and electricity or VPS charges; costs depend on your equipment and usage. |
| Recovery | Depends on the provider’s backup and restore tools. | You own the backups; the Docker project supplies a backup script. |
Managed hosting
The official project page identifies BisectHosting as its verified server-hosting partner and says the partner offers automated modpack installation and updates. Before paying, verify that the provider currently supports Vault Hunters Third Edition 3.21.7, offers a region close to your players, includes enough memory, and explains its backup, restore, player-slot, and cancellation policies. Those commercial details are not specified by the project page and should not be assumed.
Modrinth’s hosting overview describes Minecraft Java hosting with integrated mod and modpack installation. It can be a comparison candidate, but Vault Hunters 3rd Edition availability must be confirmed in the provider’s current panel before purchase.
Self-hosting at home or on a server
Home hosting is sensible when you already have a machine that can stay on, a reliable connection, and control over the router. A VPS or dedicated machine avoids exposing a home network and can provide better uptime, but you must still size its CPU, RAM, disk, and bandwidth for your group. The official pack page does not prescribe a provider or a universal server specification.
Self-hosting gives you direct access to the world, JVM flags, backups, and configuration. The trade-off is operational work: updates can break a world if done carelessly, and a power failure or lost disk is your responsibility.
Download the correct server files
- Open the Vault Hunters Third Edition project on CurseForge.
- Select the Minecraft 1.18.2 files and locate the current Third Edition release.
- Download
Vault-Hunters-3rd-Edition-3.21.7-server-files.zip, released July 30, 2026. - Have players download the matching
Vault Hunters Third Edition-3.21.7.zipclient file, released July 28, 2026. - Store the ZIP files somewhere safe so you can reproduce the installation or roll back after an update.
Use the dedicated server archive from the project’s Minecraft 1.18 server-pack section. Do not copy an arbitrary client installation into a server directory: client-only files, missing launch components, or mismatched versions can prevent startup or produce connection and world errors.
Install a self-hosted server
1. Create a clean directory
Create a new directory solely for this server, such as a folder named for the release. Extract the server ZIP into it and preserve the archive’s directory structure. Do not merge files from another Third Edition release, an old world, or a separate modpack. Keeping each release in its own directory makes rollback easier.

2. Verify the runtime
The confirmed compatibility information is Forge on Minecraft 1.18.2. The captured official pages do not state a current Java runtime version for the 3.21.7 server pack. Inspect the included launch files and the current official setup guidance before installing Java, then use the runtime expected by that release. Avoid guessing a Java version from an unrelated modpack.
3. Run the supplied launcher once
Start the launch script or launcher included in the server archive. The exact filename can differ between server-pack releases. The first run normally creates configuration files and stops because the Minecraft EULA has not been accepted.

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
4. Accept the EULA
- Open the generated
eula.txt. - Read Mojang’s terms.
- If you agree, change the setting to
eula=true. - Save the file and start the supplied launcher again.
If the server still stops immediately, check that the file is in the server’s root directory, that the setting is spelled exactly, and that the account running the server can read it.
5. Configure server.properties
Stop the server before editing configuration. Set a recognizable server name and choose the gameplay and access policies appropriate to your group.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Difficulty: select the level your players expect.
- Gameplay flags: review commands, flight, PvP, and other flags rather than accepting defaults blindly.
- View and simulation distances: start conservatively if CPU or memory is tight, then increase them after observing performance.
- Whitelist: enable it for a private group and add each player’s account.
- Online mode: use the authentication policy appropriate to your environment; understand the security consequences before changing it.
Keep a copy of server.properties with your other configuration backups. A later update can replace or add settings, and a saved copy lets you compare changes without losing your intended values.
6. Set memory and launch options
Use the pack’s supplied launch script as the baseline instead of deleting its Forge arguments. The official player instructions call for an 8192 MB allocation. The documented Docker deployment defaults to INIT_MEMORY=8G and MAX_MEMORY=16G. Treat these as reference values: a small private world may behave differently from a heavily explored world with many simultaneous players.

- Now Minecraft lovers can play a special version of UNO!
- Same as Basic UNO but features Minecraft characters and includes special Creeper rule card. Draw this card and the other players have to draw three more cards from the pile!
- The goal is to get rid of all the cards in your hand.
- First player or team to 500 wins.
- When you're down to one card, don't forget to yell "UNO"!
Leave memory for the operating system and other services. Giving Java every available gigabyte can make the machine less stable, especially when the server is generating terrain or when backups run. Watch logs and system memory over several play sessions before changing values.
7. Make the server reachable
On a home network, the host firewall and router must permit Minecraft Java connections to the server. The exact steps depend on your operating system, router, ISP, and network design, and the canonical pack pages do not publish a current forwarding checklist. Consult the documentation for your specific firewall and router rather than copying a generic rule. Test from outside the home network, not only from the host computer, because local testing can hide forwarding or NAT problems.
8. Join with the identical client
Every player should install the same Third Edition release and Forge loader represented by the server pack. A client on another modpack version, Minecraft version, or loader build commonly receives a mod-list mismatch or fails during connection. Keep the exact release filenames in your group chat so nobody silently updates one component.
Run Vault Hunters with Docker
The ramity/vault-hunters project documents a reproducible container setup. Docker does not remove the need for matching files or backups; it packages the runtime and startup process so the installation is easier to repeat.
Best Value
- Install Docker and Docker Compose on the host.
- Clone or download the
ramity/vault-huntersproject. - Download the current dedicated server ZIP from CurseForge and extract its contents into the repository’s
datadirectory. - Optionally edit
./data/server.propertiesbefore the first launch. - Open
docker-compose.ymlif you need to changeINIT_MEMORYorMAX_MEMORY. The documented defaults are 8G and 16G. - From the repository root, run
docker compose up -d. - Watch startup with
docker logs vault_hunters -f. - Stop cleanly with
docker stop vault_hunters. The project states that the server saves automatically when the container is stopped.
The project also documents an optional ram-disk mode for faster I/O. A ram-disk is temporary and does not survive a reboot, so use it only after ordinary disk storage and tested backups work. Otherwise, a crash or restart can remove the live world even though the container configuration remains.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Backups and updates
Back up before every change
- Announce maintenance so players leave the world.
- Stop the server cleanly and wait for the save to complete.
- Copy the world directory,
server.properties, and other customized configuration to storage outside the live server directory. - Keep at least one rollback copy that predates the update.
- For the Docker deployment, review and use its
./scripts/backup.shscript, then verify that the resulting archive can actually be opened.
A backup is useful only if it can be restored. Periodically test a copy on a separate directory or machine, and do not keep every backup on the same disk as the live world.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUpdate without mixing releases
Download the new dedicated server pack, stop the old instance, and preserve the old files and backup before replacing anything. Compare configuration files and carry forward only the settings you understand. Do not overwrite a live world with files from a different release while the server is running. Have every player update to the same client release before reconnecting.
Troubleshoot common failures
The server exits immediately
- Confirm that the supplied launcher is being run from the extracted server directory.
- Check
eula.txtand seteula=trueonly after accepting the terms. - Use the Java runtime expected by the pack’s launch files or current setup guidance; the captured project pages do not state that version.
- Read the first error in the console rather than treating the final shutdown line as the cause.
Players receive a mod-list or Forge mismatch
- Verify Minecraft 1.18.2 on both sides.
- Verify Forge and the Third Edition release number.
- Make sure the client uses
Vault Hunters Third Edition-3.21.7.zipand the server usesVault-Hunters-3rd-Edition-3.21.7-server-files.zip, unless you have intentionally moved to a later matched release. - Remove old mod files from a client installation instead of layering the new pack over unrelated mods.
Friends cannot connect
- Confirm the server process is running and listening on the expected Minecraft port.
- Check the host firewall and router forwarding rules for the machine’s current local address.
- Test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot, to distinguish local routing from server configuration.
- If using a managed host, check its displayed endpoint, region status, and access controls.
Lag or memory exhaustion appears
- Check whether the host is swapping or running out of physical memory.
- Reduce view and simulation distances before adding more heap.
- Compare player count and active exploration with the server log timestamps.
- Increase memory only when the machine has headroom; the 8G/16G Docker values and 8192 MB client guidance are starting references, not performance guarantees.
An update damages the world
Stop the server, preserve the damaged directory for diagnosis, and restore the last known-good world and configuration backup. Do not repeatedly launch the damaged copy while experimenting, because additional saves can make rollback harder. Recheck that every client and server file belongs to the same release before trying again.
Which option is right for your group?
| Choose this approach | When it fits | Main responsibility |
|---|---|---|
| Managed hosting | You want a public endpoint, guided installation, and less operating-system work. | Verify pack support, memory, region, backups, slots, and current pricing before subscribing. |
| Home server | You have reliable hardware, upload bandwidth, router access, and can keep the machine online. | Firewall, forwarding, power resilience, backups, updates, and security. |
| VPS or dedicated machine | You need a separately hosted environment and are comfortable administering it. | Resource sizing, operating-system maintenance, network security, and recovery. |
| Docker | You want repeatable deployment, documented commands, and isolated server files. | Docker maintenance, persistent storage, backup verification, and avoiding unsafe ram-disk use. |
The current CurseForge project page displays 5.9 million total downloads in 2026. That is a platform download count, not a measurement of concurrent players or a promise of server performance.
Launch checklist
- Server and clients use Minecraft 1.18.2 and Forge.
- The dedicated 3.21.7 server ZIP is extracted into a clean directory.
eula=trueis set after reading the EULA.server.propertieshas the intended name, difficulty, distances, whitelist, and online-mode policy.- Memory is set with operating-system headroom.
- Players have the matching 3.21.7 client ZIP.
- External connectivity has been tested.
- A tested backup exists before inviting players or changing versions.
The Bottom Line
The safest path is simple: use the dedicated 3.21.7 server pack for Minecraft 1.18.2 and Forge, keep every client on the identical release, start around the documented 8 GB memory guidance, and back up before every update. Choose managed hosting for convenience or self-host/Docker for control, but in either case treat version matching, network access, and recoverable backups as non-negotiable.
