Hamachi does not run Vintage Story for you. The host must keep either a multiplayer world or the bundled dedicated-server process running. For a persistent 24/7 world, use the dedicated server; for a quick private session, a listen world is simpler. If Hamachi is inconvenient or your group needs independent uptime, UPnP, manual forwarding, a tunnel such as playit, or managed hosting may be a better fit.

What Hamachi does—and what it does not do
Vintage Story normally accepts multiplayer connections on port 42420. Reaching that port from the public internet usually means configuring your router and operating-system firewall. Hamachi avoids the router part by placing participating computers on a private virtual network that behaves like a local network for the players who joined it.
That distinction matters: Hamachi is only the network path. It does not create a world, launch the game, save the map, or keep a server alive after the host disconnects. One computer still has to run Vintage Story’s multiplayer host or the dedicated-server executable.

- Listen world: the host opens a world from the game. It is available only while that game session remains open.
- Dedicated server: a separate server process loads the world and can remain online while nobody is playing at the host’s game client.
- Hamachi: the virtual-LAN connection that lets friends reach the host without a conventional public port-forwarding rule.
The official Vintage Story self-hosting guidance describes Hamachi as software that offers an easy setup for this VPN-style method. It does not guarantee that every firewall, router, or internet service will pass Hamachi traffic, so treat it as a practical workaround rather than a universal fix.
Requirements before you begin
Prepare the following before inviting anyone:
- A Windows, macOS, or Linux computer capable of running Vintage Story as the host.
- The same Vintage Story version on the host and every client. A community multiplayer guide listed stable version 1.22.7 on August 20, 2026, but version numbers change; check the current release before installation.
- The same Hamachi client generation installed on every participant.
- A private Hamachi network name and password that you will share only with intended players.
- The host’s Hamachi IPv4 address, which friends will enter in Vintage Story’s direct-connect dialog.
- Permission to allow Hamachi and Vintage Story through the host operating system’s firewall.
For a dedicated server, also decide where the server’s world and configuration data will live. On Windows, the official guidance recommends using a separate data path for the dedicated server so its settings do not interfere with ordinary single-player data.

- Install Hamachi everywhere. Have the host and each friend install the same client generation. Mixing generations can produce different menus or connection behavior, so standardizing first makes troubleshooting easier.
- Create one private network on the host. Choose a network identifier and password that are difficult for outsiders to guess. Do not post either value publicly.
- Have each friend join that network. Every participant should appear as connected in Hamachi before anyone starts testing Vintage Story.
- Record the host’s Hamachi IPv4 address. This is the address clients should use for direct connection. Do not substitute the host’s ordinary home-LAN address unless everyone is actually on that same physical LAN.
- Check reachability. Use Hamachi’s own connection indicators or its local connectivity test. If a friend cannot reach the host at the virtual-network level, launching Vintage Story will not solve the problem; fix Hamachi or firewall permissions first.
Keep the network membership limited to people you trust. Anyone who can join the Hamachi network may have virtual access to services the host exposes on that interface, not just the game server.
Host a world from the Vintage Story game
This is the fastest route for an occasional session. It is suitable when the host is already playing and does not need the world to remain online independently.
- Start Vintage Story on the host and load the world you want to share.
- Use the game’s multiplayer option to open that world to LAN or internet access, following the labels shown by your current Vintage Story version.
- Leave the game session running. Closing the world, exiting to the main menu, or quitting the game ends the listen server.
- Give friends the host’s Hamachi IPv4 address and the port 42420.
- Have each friend open Vintage Story’s direct-connect dialog, enter the address and port, and connect.
Direct connection is the dependable instruction when automatic discovery does not list the world. Discovery mechanisms may not pass cleanly across a virtual adapter, while entering the address explicitly tells the client where to connect.

When this method is the right choice
- You are playing with a small, trusted group for a defined session.
- The host wants to play in the same world rather than administer a separate process.
- It is acceptable for everyone to be disconnected when the host closes the game.
When it is the wrong choice
Do not describe a listen world as a 24/7 server. It cannot remain available after the host’s game session ends. If players need to log in while the host is away, use the dedicated-server path instead.
Run the bundled dedicated server
The dedicated server is the better Hamachi target for a persistent world, mods, scheduled restarts, or a host who does not want to keep the full game client open. It is still hosted on your computer; Hamachi only supplies the private route to it.
- Install the dedicated-server files for the same Vintage Story version as the clients. A client and server on different versions can reject connections or behave unpredictably.
- Choose a separate server data location on Windows. Keeping server settings and worlds apart from single-player data prevents configuration changes for one mode from affecting the other.
- Launch the bundled dedicated-server executable. Complete its initial setup and select or create the world you want it to load.
- Configure the server’s listening port. The default is 42420. Keep that value if you want to give friends the standard connection instructions.
- Allow the process through the operating-system firewall. The firewall rule must cover the interface Hamachi uses, not only your physical Ethernet or Wi-Fi adapter.
- Leave the server process running. Players can connect independently of the host’s game client, but shutting down the process, the computer, or the Hamachi connection makes the world unavailable.
On Linux, the official dedicated-server documentation covers installation, running the server as a service, and firewall configuration. Use those service and firewall instructions for your distribution rather than copying rules intended for a different operating system.
Dedicated-server administration basics
Decide who is allowed to administer the world before inviting players. Keep backups of the server data, especially before changing versions or installing mods. A dedicated process gives you uptime and separation from the game client, but it also adds administration: updates, restarts, logs, firewall rules, and backup checks become your responsibility.
How friends connect
- Each friend starts Hamachi and confirms that the host appears online in the shared private network.
- Each friend starts the matching Vintage Story version.
- In Vintage Story, open the direct-connect dialog rather than relying on server discovery.
- Enter the host’s Hamachi IPv4 address and port 42420.
- Connect while the host’s listen world or dedicated-server process is running.
Do not give friends the host’s public IP address for this Hamachi setup unless you have deliberately configured a separate public connection. The Hamachi address is the endpoint intended for this virtual network.

Port and firewall details
The official dedicated-server guide states that Vintage Story uses port 42420 by default. For modern versions, its guidance calls for forwarding both TCP and UDP when exposing a server through a router. The operating-system firewall needs matching rules for the same protocols.

Hamachi connections generally do not require you to create a conventional router port-forwarding rule for every friend. Nevertheless, a firewall can still block the Hamachi adapter or the Vintage Story process. If direct connection fails, verify the firewall before changing unrelated router settings.
Can UPnP open the server automatically?
Vintage Story’s “Open to Internet” route may ask the router to create a port mapping through UPnP. The official self-hosting guidance estimates about a 60% chance of instant success for that route. The result depends on the router, its UPnP setting, the network topology, and the internet service.
UPnP is useful for a quick trial when it works, but it is not a guarantee and it does not provide dedicated-server persistence by itself. If the mapping fails, move to one of the deliberate alternatives rather than repeatedly reopening the same listen world.

Choose Hamachi when
- Your group is small and trusted.
- Everyone is willing to install and run the overlay client.
- You cannot or do not want to alter the router.
- The host can remain online for the sessions you plan to play.
Choose manual forwarding when
You control the router, understand firewall changes, and want friends to connect without installing a virtual-LAN client. Forward TCP and UDP 42420 for modern dedicated-server versions, then allow the same traffic through the host firewall. A carrier-grade NAT or restrictive provider may prevent this even when your local router is configured correctly.

Choose a tunnel when
A tunnel can provide an externally reachable endpoint when inbound connections are blocked by CGNAT or an ISP policy. It introduces another service to configure and keep available, so confirm that its current Vintage Story support matches your server version before committing a world to it.
Choose managed hosting when
Use a managed host when nobody in the group wants to maintain a computer, network rules, backups, and restarts. Evaluate practical terms rather than assuming every provider offers the same service: check the server location, backup policy, mod support, resource limits, cancellation terms, and how you can retrieve your world data.

Troubleshooting a Hamachi Vintage Story server
The friend cannot see the host in the server list
Skip discovery and use direct connection with the host’s Hamachi IPv4 address and port 42420. Discovery is not required for a working connection.
The Hamachi network shows the host as offline
Both computers must be signed in to Hamachi and joined to the same private network. Check that the host’s Hamachi client is running, then test virtual-network reachability before opening Vintage Story.
Hamachi works, but Vintage Story times out
- Confirm that the listen world or dedicated-server process is actually running.
- Confirm that the client and server versions match.
- Check that the host firewall allows Vintage Story on the Hamachi interface.
- Confirm that the client is using the host’s Hamachi IPv4 address, not an old address copied from a previous setup.
- For a dedicated server, verify that it is listening on port 42420 and that its configuration was not changed to another port.
Only some players can connect
Compare the affected player’s Hamachi status with a player who can connect. A single blocked firewall, stale client, or failed Hamachi membership can affect one computer while the rest of the group works normally. Have the affected player rejoin the same private network and retest virtual connectivity.

The server works locally but not from outside the home
This usually indicates an exposure-path problem rather than a Vintage Story world problem. For direct internet hosting, verify router forwarding and matching firewall rules for TCP and UDP 42420. If the ISP uses CGNAT or blocks inbound traffic, use Hamachi, a supported tunnel, or managed hosting instead.
The world disappears when the host leaves
That is expected for a listen world. Start the bundled dedicated server and connect to that process if the world must remain available while the host is not playing.
Version, mods, and update discipline
Keep the server and every client on the same Vintage Story release. The 1.22.7 stable-version reference dated August 20, 2026 is a time-specific community report, not a permanent version guarantee; verify the current release whenever you install or update.
Apply updates deliberately. Back up the world first, update the dedicated server and clients as a coordinated change, and test the world before inviting the full group. Mods can add another compatibility requirement, so document the mod set and versions for every player instead of troubleshooting an unrecorded mixture.
Security and reliability checklist
- Use a private Hamachi network and share its identifier and password only with intended players.
- Do not publish the Hamachi credentials in a public chat, forum post, or stream description.
- Allow only the required Vintage Story port and protocols through the firewall.
- Keep the host operating system, Hamachi client, and Vintage Story installation updated.
- Back up dedicated-server world data before version changes, mod changes, or major configuration edits.
- Tell players whether the world is a listen session or a dedicated server so they know when it will be available.
- Plan for the host computer and network connection to remain powered and connected for the entire play window.
Recommended setup for most small groups
For an occasional private session, install Hamachi on every computer, create one private network, open the world to LAN or internet from the host’s game, and use direct connection to the host’s Hamachi IPv4 address on port 42420. This avoids router work while keeping the setup understandable.
For a world that should survive the host closing the game, install the bundled dedicated server, isolate its data path, allow TCP and UDP 42420 through the operating-system firewall, and keep the server process running. If the group grows, needs round-the-clock access, or cannot keep a host online, reassess a tunnel or managed host instead of stretching a listen world beyond what it can do.
