The simplest way to host ARK: Survival Ascended for console and PC friends is to rent a managed server. Self-hosting is possible, but it requires a 64-bit Windows-capable machine, SteamCMD, SSD storage, broadband networking, firewall and router configuration, and ongoing maintenance. Choose managed hosting when you want a web control panel and reliable crossplay; choose self-hosting when you need control over the hardware, files and configuration.

Choose between managed hosting and self-hosting
Your first decision determines almost every later step. A managed host supplies the game server, network connection, control panel and usually automated restarts and updates. A self-hosted server runs on hardware you administer, so you are responsible for installation, security, backups, updates and connectivity.

Before buying a plan, check the provider’s current platform list, map restrictions, region choices, slot tiers, backup policy, mod workflow and cancellation terms. A plan that supports PC players may not automatically support Xbox or PlayStation crossplay, and a map shown in the catalog may be limited to a particular slot tier.
Route 1: rent a managed ARK server
Managed hosting is the practical choice for most groups that include console players. What to check before ordering
- Platform mix: Confirm that the plan supports every edition your group owns, not merely “PC.” Steam and Microsoft Store/Windows are separate platform values in server configuration.
- Crossplay control: Look for a setting that explicitly enables the required platforms. A server can support several platforms without allowing every combination by default.
- Map and slot pairing: Review whether your chosen map needs a higher slot tier. Nitrado’s current page states that some newer maps require 26 slots.
- Region: Select a data-center region near most players. Distance increases latency, while a region that is convenient for one player may be poor for the rest of the group.
- Administration: Confirm access to server name, passwords, player limit, map selection, restart controls, logs and configuration files.
- Backups and recovery: Find out how often automatic backups run, how long they are retained and whether you can download a copy.
- Mods: Check whether the manager supports the mods your group needs and whether console players can use them. Mods that depend on a particular platform or version can prevent players from joining.
- Update behavior: Determine whether updates are automatic, scheduled or manual, and whether you can delay an update until a mod is compatible.
Managed-host setup sequence
- Create the server: Select ARK: Survival Ascended, the platform or crossplay option, a region, a slot count and the map offered by that plan.
- Set identity and access: Enter a server name that friends can search for. Set an administrator password and, if appropriate, a separate join password. Do not reuse a personal account password.
- Choose crossplay: Enable only the platform values your players need. Nitrado’s documentation lists values including
PC,PS5,XSX,WINGDKandALL; the exact label in your panel may differ. - Select the map and gameplay settings: Apply the map, player limit, difficulty and other settings. Save the configuration before starting the server.
- Install mods deliberately: Add one mod at a time, restart, and test a connection before adding the next. Keep a written load order so you can identify the change that causes a failure.
- Start and verify: Start the instance, wait for the status to report online, then search from one intended platform. A successful search and join test is more useful than relying on a green control-panel icon.
- Document recovery: Record the server name, map, settings, mod order, backup location and the procedure for restoring an earlier save.
Route 2: self-host a dedicated server
The ARK Official Community Wiki’s dedicated-server documentation states that ASA requires Windows, or a Windows-like environment, and does not support Linux natively. In practice, plan for a 64-bit Windows-capable host. A virtual machine or compatibility layer may be possible, but it adds another support boundary and should be tested before you promise a group a permanent server.
Hardware and network planning
Steam lists the following client requirements for ASA: Windows 10 or 11, DirectX 12, broadband internet, 16 GB of RAM minimum, 32 GB recommended, and 180 GB of available storage with an SSD required. Those figures are not a guaranteed dedicated-server specification. A server’s needs rise with player count, map complexity, mods, save size and simulation activity.

- Use an SSD: The game files and world saves perform poorly on slow storage, and an SSD is explicitly required by the published client requirements.
- Leave headroom: Do not allocate all memory or storage to the server. Windows, updates, logs, backups and temporary files need room.
- Prefer wired networking: A wired connection avoids the interference and variable latency common on Wi-Fi.
- Check upstream bandwidth: Your internet plan must handle the server’s outbound traffic while leaving capacity for other household use.
- Keep the host available: Sleep, hibernation, reboots and power-saving settings can make the server disappear. Configure a controlled restart window instead.
Install SteamCMD and download the server
SteamCMD is Valve’s command-line tool for downloading and updating dedicated-server files. Create a dedicated directory on the SSD, install SteamCMD, and use ASA’s application ID 2430930 to obtain the files.

- Install SteamCMD in a directory with a short path and enough free space. Avoid placing server files inside a user profile that has restrictive permissions.
- Create a separate destination directory for the ASA server, such as
C:ASA-Server. - Run SteamCMD and set that destination as the install directory. A standard update command is:
steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir C:ASA-Server +app_update 2430930 validate +quit - Wait for SteamCMD to finish and confirm that it reports a successful update. If validation repeatedly redownloads files, investigate disk errors, permissions and available space rather than repeatedly starting the server.
- Keep the SteamCMD command in a text file or script. Running it again later is the normal way to apply server updates.
Server files are not the same thing as a playable client installation. Every player still needs ASA on a supported platform, and the server and clients must be on compatible versions.
Create a launch script and configuration
Use a Windows batch or PowerShell script to start the server consistently. The script should define the server name, map, player limit, passwords, mods and crossplay options through the current ASA launch parameters and configuration files. Keep the script outside the installation directory so an update cannot overwrite your local settings.
- Give the server a distinctive name that friends can search for.
- Set a join password if the server is private; use a separate administrator credential for administrative commands.
- Set a player limit that the hardware can sustain rather than simply using the largest available value.
- Specify the map and keep a copy of the configuration for each map if you rotate worlds.
- Record the mod identifiers and order. Removing or reordering a mod can change saved data, so take a backup first.
- Set the crossplay platform value deliberately. The documented values include
PC,PS5,XSX,WINGDKandALL.
Do not copy launch flags from an old ASE guide without checking that they apply to ASA. Parameters, executable names and configuration locations can change between game versions.

Forward ports and configure the firewall
A self-hosted server must be reachable from outside your home network. Forward the UDP game and query ports selected by your launch configuration from the router to the host’s fixed local IP address. Allow the server executable and SteamCMD-related traffic through Windows Firewall on the appropriate private network profile.
- Give the host a DHCP reservation or static local address so the forwarding rule does not point to a different machine after a reboot.
- Choose the game and query port values required by the current ASA documentation and your launch parameters. Do not assume a port from an older server guide is still correct.
- Create router forwarding rules for those UDP ports to the host’s local address. Avoid exposing unrelated administration ports to the internet.
- Create Windows Firewall inbound rules that allow the server executable on the selected ports. Leave outbound traffic restricted unless the server’s documentation requires otherwise.
- Restart the server and test from a device outside your home network, such as a friend’s connection or a mobile hotspot. Testing only from inside the LAN can produce a false positive.
If the server is visible locally but not remotely, check the host’s local address, the router’s WAN address, double-NAT or carrier-grade NAT, firewall profile and whether your internet provider blocks inbound connections. A managed host avoids these home-network issues.
Windows Server certificates and visibility
The community documentation notes that Windows Server certificate and TLS configuration can affect whether a dedicated server is visible. Keep the operating system’s certificates and revocation lists correctly configured and current. A server that starts successfully but never appears in the intended browser can have a trust or certificate problem rather than a gameplay setting problem.

Enable crossplay without locking out players
Crossplay is a server setting, not a guarantee that every client can connect. Each player needs a supported ASA edition, a compatible game version and any required downloadable content or mod state.

When diagnosing a missing server, first have one player search with filters cleared, then test each platform separately. A platform-specific filter, full server, password mismatch or incompatible mod can look like a crossplay failure.

Maps
Map availability is not universal. Managed plans can restrict newer maps to particular slot tiers; Nitrado’s current information gives a 26-slot requirement for some newer maps. On a self-hosted machine, changing maps changes memory, storage and save-management requirements. Stop the server and back up the current world before switching maps.

Mods
Mods add a second compatibility layer. A mod can require a specific game version, affect only certain platforms or fail after an update. Add mods incrementally, record the order, and keep a known-good configuration. If players cannot join after a mod change, remove the newest change first and restore the previous backup.
Slots
A slot count is a concurrency limit, not a performance guarantee. More simultaneous players, structures, creatures and automated systems increase simulation load. Start with the number of players you actually have and raise it only after observing memory use, CPU load, save times and connection stability.
Backups, updates and routine administration
ASA worlds are persistent data. Treat the save as valuable even if the server is only for friends.
- Back up before changes: Save a copy before a game update, map switch, mod installation, configuration change or major build event.
- Keep more than one generation: Rotate backups so a corrupted save does not overwrite your only good copy. Store at least one copy away from the server disk.
- Schedule maintenance: Announce restarts and updates in advance. A predictable window is less disruptive than an emergency reboot when the disk fills.
- Update in stages: Update the server, start it privately, check the log and join with one test account, then open it to the group.
- Monitor capacity: Watch free SSD space, RAM, CPU, server uptime and save duration. Logs that grow indefinitely can consume the disk.
- Secure administration: Use unique credentials, limit remote desktop or management access, and install Windows security updates.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
The server does not appear in the browser
- Confirm the process is running and has completed startup rather than merely opening a console window.
- Verify the map, server name and browser filters.
- Check that the query port is forwarded and allowed through the firewall.
- Test from outside the local network to rule out LAN-only visibility.
- On Windows Server, verify certificates and revocation lists as noted in the dedicated-server documentation.
Friends can see the server but cannot join
- Check the password and whether the server has reached its slot limit.
- Confirm every player is on the same ASA version.
- Remove or update the newest mod and test again.
- Verify that the selected crossplay value includes the player’s platform.
- Check whether a map or downloadable-content requirement differs between editions.
The server crashes or becomes unstable
- Reduce the player limit or remove recently added mods.
- Check available RAM and SSD space, then inspect Windows and server logs.
- Restore the most recent known-good save if corruption began after a configuration change.
- Run SteamCMD validation and restart from a clean, documented configuration.
Players experience high latency
- Move a managed server to a region closer to most players, or relocate the self-hosted machine.
- Use wired Ethernet for the host.
- Check that household uploads, cloud backups or downloads are not saturating upstream bandwidth.
- Compare results at different times to distinguish a local load problem from an internet-route problem.
Licensing and monetization checkpoint
The community dedicated-server documentation says that, unless you obtain a dedicated-server license from Nitrado, ASA dedicated servers are intended for personal, non-commercial hosting. It also states that monetary gains are restricted except for qualifying donations or amounts no greater than operating costs. If you plan to charge access, sell advantages, accept donations or run a public commercial service, read the current license and EULA before launching and recheck them whenever the terms change.
Which route should you use?
- Choose managed hosting if your group includes Xbox or PlayStation players, you need a web panel, or nobody wants to maintain Windows, port forwarding and backups.
- Choose self-hosting if you already control a suitable 64-bit Windows-capable machine, can maintain broadband connectivity and want direct access to files and settings.
- Start managed, migrate later if you need to play immediately but want to learn server administration. Export saves and document settings before migration; compatibility depends on the provider and current game version.
Whichever route you select, begin with one map, a modest player limit and no mods. Verify that every intended platform can join, make a backup, and only then add complexity.
