To host Avatar: The Next Generation with friends, build a dedicated Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge server from the pack’s exact 1.0.9.4 Reworked release, dated May 7, 2022. Every player must use that same pack release, Minecraft version, and Forge build. Download the release from its official CurseForge project, inspect Files → Additional Files for a server package, install the matching Forge server in a clean directory, accept the EULA, then configure memory and network access.

What is Avatar: The Next Generation, and which version should you host?
Avatar: The Next Generation is an Avatar-themed modpack by FiveNights2161. The project identifies Minecraft 1.12.2, the Forge mod loader, and release 1.0.9.4 Reworked, published May 7, 2022. CurseForge lists 12,511 total downloads for the project as recorded in 2022. A Modpack Index cross-check identifies Avatar Mod 2: Out of the Iceberg, Better Questing, and additional adventure, magic, and utility components.
Those details define the reproducible target. This is a legacy Forge pack, not a current Minecraft or NeoForge pack. Do not let a launcher silently create a newer profile and then copy that profile to the server. Write the target in your setup notes before downloading anything:

If the project later exposes another file, treat it as a separate release. A client on another release can appear to start normally but fail during the Forge handshake or disconnect with a missing-mod, wrong-version, or registry error.
Where are the official server files?
Start at the pack’s official CurseForge project rather than downloading a random repack. Open the project’s Files area, select 1.0.9.4 Reworked, and inspect Additional Files. CurseForge’s multiplayer guidance directs server operators to that area when a creator supplies a dedicated-server package.

A client profile and a dedicated-server archive are not automatically the same thing. Before starting the server, open the release contents and check whether they include a server script, a Forge server jar or installer, configuration files, mods, scripts, and any instructions from the pack author. If there is no server package, do not assume the client archive is complete: prepare a clean Forge server and copy only the files the release documentation identifies as server-side.
Keep the original archive untouched. Make a working copy in a dedicated folder so you can compare files later and restore a clean state if a mod, configuration edit, or failed upgrade breaks the installation.

What do you need before installing?
Host computer or managed server
For self-hosting, use a machine that can remain online while friends play, has enough memory for the pack and the operating system, and has upload bandwidth for every connected player. The exact memory amount is not specified for this release, so begin with the pack’s own startup script or launcher recommendation and adjust after watching the server log and operating-system memory use. Do not allocate all physical RAM to Java.
A managed host can remove the need to keep a home PC online, but it must support custom Forge installations and Minecraft 1.12.2. A generic “modded Minecraft” button is not proof that this particular legacy pack will work.
Software and access
- The matching Forge server installer for Minecraft 1.12.2.
- Java compatible with the host’s Forge 1.12.2 build and the provider’s instructions.
- Permission to create files, run Java, and edit firewall or router rules if hosting at home.
- The pack’s server archive, if the release supplies one.
- A backup location separate from the live server directory.
Information to record
Create a small text file containing the pack release, Minecraft version, Forge build, Java runtime version, server address, listening port, and the date of each change. When a player cannot join, these values let you distinguish a version mismatch from a network failure.
How do you install the server on a home PC?
- Create a clean directory. Make a folder used only for this server. Avoid installing into a client launcher directory, a downloads folder, or a world backup. A separate directory prevents client updates and server changes from overwriting one another.
- Install the matching Forge server. Run the Forge installer for Minecraft 1.12.2 and choose the server-install option pointing to the new directory. Use the Forge build required by the 1.0.9.4 Reworked release if the pack documentation specifies one. Do not substitute a modern Forge or NeoForge installer.
- Copy the pack’s server files. Extract the server package into the Forge directory, preserving its folder structure. If the package contains a start script, read it before editing. If it contains only a mod/config set, compare its contents with the release instructions rather than copying every client file blindly.
- Start once, then stop cleanly. Run the supplied script or the Forge server command. The first start normally creates the world, configuration files, logs, and
eula.txt. Wait until generation finishes, then stop the server from its console instead of closing the window. - Accept the EULA. Read the Minecraft EULA and, if you agree, change the EULA value in
eula.txttoeula=true. A server will not continue starting without that acceptance. NeoForged’s server documentation summarizes the requirement: “Since modpacks are a third-party launcher feature, one such launcher is required for installing a modpack on a server.” That documentation is for current server procedures, but the practical point applies here: a modpack still needs a separately prepared server installation and lawful EULA acceptance. - Set memory in the startup script. Add or adjust Java memory flags in the script supplied with the server. Use a conservative initial allocation that leaves RAM for the operating system, then increase only when logs or in-game performance show a need. Keep the values documented so a later restart uses the same settings.
- Start again and read the log. Confirm that Forge reaches its ready state without a fatal error. Open
logs/latest.logand note the first warning or exception, not merely the final “server stopped” line. Stop and fix startup errors before inviting players.
Which files are safe on a dedicated server?
Forge servers cannot load mods that exist only to render graphics, draw a client GUI, provide shaders, or integrate with a client-only input system. A dedicated server has no client renderer. Some launchers or server packages remove those files automatically; others do not.

Use the pack’s server instructions first
Compare the supplied server archive with a client profile only after reading the release instructions. Remove a file only when the pack author identifies it as client-only or the Forge log clearly reports that it cannot run on a dedicated server. There is no tested removal list established for this legacy release, so do not delete files based on a guessed mod name.
Symptoms of a client-only mod problem
- The server stops during startup with a message about a client-only class, renderer, or display environment.
- The log names a mod that attempts to access a Minecraft client package.
- The server starts, but a dedicated-server crash occurs as soon as a world loads.
Save a copy of the original server directory before each removal. Change one file or one clearly documented group at a time, start the server, and check latest.log. This makes it possible to restore the last known-good state.
How do friends connect to a home-hosted server?
- Choose the listening port. Keep the value in the server properties and startup notes. The pack documentation does not publish a pack-specific port; use the port configured by your server and host environment.
- Allow Java through the operating-system firewall. Create an inbound rule for the server’s listening port and the Java executable used by Forge. Apply the rule only to the network profiles you understand, and avoid disabling the firewall as a shortcut.
- Forward the port on the router. Map the chosen external port to the host PC’s local address. Reserve that local address in the router or configure a static local address so the forwarding rule does not become stale.
- Start the server and test locally. Join from the host PC using the local address. A successful local connection proves that Forge and the world are running; it does not prove that the router or internet path is configured.
- Test from outside the home network. Have a friend try the public address while the server is running, or use another connection that is not on the same Wi-Fi network. Some routers do not support loopback testing from inside the LAN.
- Share the public address only after the handshake works. Give friends the public address and port, not the host’s private address. Do not publish the address in a public forum.
The exact router menus and port values depend on your equipment and internet provider. The official pack sources do not provide a tested router recipe, so use the labels shown by your own router and firewall rather than copying a device-specific guide for another model.
How does a managed host change the setup?
A managed host can provide an always-on machine, a web console, scheduled restarts, and automated backups. You still need to supply the correct legacy files and verify that the provider permits them.

Questions to ask before paying
- Does the service support Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge, rather than only current loaders?
- Can you upload a custom server archive and replace the default Forge build?
- Can you pin the exact 1.0.9.4 Reworked files instead of selecting an automatically updated pack?
- Can you edit startup Java arguments and view the full server log?
- Are world, configuration, and script backups automatic, and how are they restored?
- Can you change the server port or use the provider’s assigned address without manual router forwarding?
Upload the server package through the provider’s file manager or transfer method, install the matching Forge version, set the Java and memory options, and start from the provider’s console. Read the first startup log exactly as you would on a home PC. A hosted plan is a convenience choice, not evidence that the provider supports this specific pack.

Why can’t my client join the server?
“Incompatible mod set” or missing-mod errors
Confirm that the client and server both use 1.0.9.4 Reworked, Minecraft 1.12.2, and the same Forge build. Reinstalling only the client rarely helps if the server was built from another release. Compare the mods, config, and scripts directories against the authoritative server package.
Forge handshake or registry errors
These commonly indicate version drift or a changed mod list. Record the first error in the client’s latest.log and the server’s logs/latest.log. Check for a different Forge build, a missing dependency, a duplicate jar, or a mod removed from one side only.

The server starts but crashes while loading
Look for client-only content, Java incompatibility, or a damaged configuration. Restore the last backup, then reapply one change at a time. Do not keep deleting jars until the error disappears; that can create a second, less obvious mismatch.
Local players can join, but friends cannot
The Forge installation is probably working, so test the network path: confirm the server is listening on the intended port, allow it through the firewall, verify router forwarding points to the current local address, and check whether the internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT. A public address cannot reach a private host when the provider does not offer inbound connections.
Players time out or disconnect after joining
Check host upload capacity, server tick or memory warnings, and whether the world is still generating chunks. Keep the client and server logs from the same attempt. A timeout with no server log entry points toward networking; a disconnect accompanied by a Forge exception points toward a mod or configuration problem.
How should you back up and update the server?
- Stop the server cleanly before copying files.
- Back up the world directory,
config,mods, scripts, server properties, and startup files. - Store at least one copy outside the live server machine or outside the managed host’s primary disk.
- Label each backup with the pack release, Forge build, Java version, and date.
- Test restoring a copy to a separate directory before trusting it after a failure.
Do not update the pack, Forge, Java, or individual mods while players are using the world. Freeze the working release first, then test any change on a copy. If the change fails, restore the complete matching set rather than mixing old world files with a new mod directory.
What should you check before inviting friends?
- The server reaches its ready state without fatal errors.
- The EULA file records your acceptance.
- Every client has Minecraft 1.12.2, Forge, and 1.0.9.4 Reworked.
- The server package, mods, configs, and scripts are backed up.
- The host has enough free memory and disk space for world growth.
- The listening port is allowed by the firewall and, for home hosting, forwarded by the router.
- A local connection succeeds, followed by a test from outside the home network.
- You have recorded the first error from both client and server logs for future troubleshooting.
Once those checks pass, distribute the connection address privately and keep the server release frozen. That combination—authoritative files, matching Forge versions, and controlled network access—is what makes this legacy pack dependable for a group playthrough.
